UCL: Declan Rice scores two free-kicks as Gunners smash Real Madrid

Declan Rice scored two excellent second-half free-kicks as Arsenal stunned Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals at Emirates Stadium to take a three-goal advantage into the second leg.

Mikel Arteta had asked the Arsenal fans to arrive early to create an impressive atmosphere inside the stadium, and the team responded by starting the game quickly with a number of dangerous crosses into the Madrid penalty area.

It took until the 20th minute for Madrid to have their first real chance, when Vinicius Jr curled an effort wide.

But Rice took control of the tie for Arsenal in the second half.

The Gunners were the better side all evening and took the lead in the 58th minute, when Rice curled the first of two excellent free-kicks round the Real Madrid wall into the corner of the net past Thibaut Courtois.

Rice scored his second of the night with a free-kick of equal quality 12 minutes later, bending another long-range effort into the top right-hand corner to leave Madrid stunned.

Mikel Merino then made sure it was a memorable night for Arsenal when he curled a shot into the bottom corner from inside the area just five minutes later.

Things only got worse for Madrid when Eduardo Camavinga was sent off in stoppage time for picking up a second yellow card.

Arsenal have not reached the semi-finals stage of the Champions League since the 2008-09 season, but they have given themselves a huge chance of progressing to the last four with this result.

UCL QF: Things to know as Arsenal welcomes Real Madrid

Arsenal is set to face one of the most daunting challenges of their season as they welcome Real Madrid to the Emirates for the UEFA Champions League Quarterfinals.

The Gunners have been in superb form under Mikel Arteta, boasting an exciting blend of youth and experience that has propelled them to the upper echelons of European football.

However, this clash with Madrid, a club with 15 Champions League titles and a storied history of success, presents a monumental test.

Arsenal fans will be hoping their team can replicate their league performances on the European stage, with key players like Bukayo Saka, Martin Ødegaard, and Gabriel Jesus expected to lead the charge against the reigning Spanish champions.

Real Madrid, under Carlo Ancelotti, enters the quarterfinals with a wealth of experience and an impressive pedigree in the competition.

With the likes of Jude Bellingham, Vinícius Júnior, Luka Modrić, and Toni Kroos leading the way, Madrid’s blend of seasoned winners and dynamic youth makes them one of the most dangerous teams in Europe.

Bellingham, in particular, has been a revelation since joining, adding creativity and crucial goals to the midfield.

Arsenal will need to be at their absolute best, both tactically and mentally, to get past the mighty Real Madrid and advance to the semifinals, in what promises to be a thrilling two-legged affair.

Here are a few things to know about the dreaded contest:

    1. This will be just the third meeting between Arsenal and Real Madrid in European competition, following their last 16 tie in the UEFA Champions League in 2005-06. Arsenal won 1-0 in the first leg away from home, before drawing 0-0 at Highbury in the second leg (1-0 on aggregate).

    2. Since the start of the 2017-18 campaign, Real Madrid have played 22 matches against English sides in the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League (W11 D5 L6). This is 10 more than any other team against sides from a specific nation in this period, after Liverpool and Manchester City’s 12 meetings each with Spanish teams.

    3. Real Madrid have beaten more different opponents than any other side in European Cup/UEFA Champions League history (111) – including seven different English sides – but Arsenal are not one of them (D1 L1). The only other English team to avoid defeat in their first three games against Real Madrid in the European Cup/Champions League are Liverpool.

    4. Real Madrid haven’t lost the first leg in any of their last eight knockout stage ties in the UEFA Champions League (W5 D3); their joint-longest run in the competition in first leg meetings, along with another eight-game run between April 2016 and February 2019.

Valencia stun Real Madrid with 95th-minute winner

Hugo Duro’s injury-time winner for Valencia stunned Real Madrid as the hosts lost ground in the La Liga title race.

With the clock showing 95 minutes, Rafa Mir put in a sublime cross, which Hugo Duro headed home from close range.

Mouctar Diakhaby had opened the scoring for Valencia when he rose highest to head home Andre Almeida’s cross.

It was a blow for Madrid who had passed up a big chance minutes earlier when Vinicius Jr’s penalty was easily saved by goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili after Cesar Tarrega was judged to have fouled Kylian Mbappe in the box.

Shortly after the break, Vinicius atoned for his penalty miss, sending an effort high into the roof of the net to equalise.

Mbappe stabbed an effort just wide but was unable to find the target in a frustrating afternoon for the French striker and his side.

Madrid have missed five penalties this season in all competitions (11 scored from 16), their highest tally of failures in a single campaign since at least 2013-14.

With Thibaut Courtois out with a muscle injury and Andriy Lunin suffering discomfort in his leg during the win over Leganes, 19-year-old Fran Gonzalez became the youngest goalkeeper to make their Madrid debut in La Liga since Iker Casillas did so aged 18 years 115 days in September 1999.

For Valencia, it is a momentous win and the first time they have been victorious at the Bernabeu since 2008.

  • Alvarez disallowed penalty, other robberies in football’s history

Alvarez disallowed penalty, other robberies in football’s history

Again, Real Madrid have come under scrutiny and desertion following the penalty incident at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano on Wednesday night seeing Julian Alvarez penalty chunked off by VAR for a controversial “double-kick” which seems to be an impediment to the home team.

The UEFA body has approved the decision of the VAR saying there was a double touch, however, in some quarters the incident proved to be one of the biggest robberies in football’s history.

Here are a list of football robberies you should know

    1. Robin van Persie’s red card vs Barcelona

Van Persie was shown a second yellow card at the Camp Nou for having a shot about a millisecond after the referee blew the whistle for offside. Arsenal were 3-2 ahead on aggregate at the time before they crashed out with 10 men.

    2. Thierry Henry’s handball vs Ireland

In a World Cup qualifier, Henry’s handball saw France triumph over Ireland and the Irish haven’t forgotten about it.

    3. Harry Maguire for £80m

Some Man United fans till today argue that Harry Maguire’s signing is considered a robbery following his performances with the club.

    4. Italy vs South Korea at the 2002 World Cup

Football fans around the globe have reasons to believe that Italy were robbed in the quarter finals of the 2002 World Cup against South Korea.

    5. Diego Maradona’s handball against England

1986 World Cup quarter-final between Argentina and England, Diego Maradona controversially scored the opening goal with a handball, later dubbed the “Hand of God,”which the referee missed, and Argentina went on to win 2-1.

    6. Frank Lampard’s ‘goal’ vs Germany in 2010 World Cup

Lampard’s infamous long-range ‘goal’ in England’s last-16 defeat against Germany was not given despite the ball bouncing over the line after hitting the underside of the bar.

Had the goal been given, England would have been level at 2-2 just before half-time but Capello’s side went on to lose 4-1 in Bloemfontein – a result the Italian feels may have been different if Lampard’s strike had stood.

    7. The game that ended Arsenal’s unbeaten run vs Man Utd

The “Battle of the Buffet” refers to Manchester United’s 2–0 win over Arsenal on 24 October 2004, ending Arsenal’s 49-match unbeaten run. Ruud van Nistelrooy scored a controversial penalty after Wayne Rooney was deemed to have been fouled, though Arsenal fans believed Rooney had dived.

    8. Chelsea vs Barcelona in 2009

The Chelsea vs Barcelona match in the 2009 UEFA Champions League semi-final second leg ended in controversy. Chelsea led through Michael Essien’s early goal but had several penalty appeals denied by referee Tom Henning Øvrebø. In stoppage time, Andrés Iniesta scored a crucial equalizer, giving Barcelona a 1–1 draw and advancing them to the final on away goals. Chelsea players and fans were furious over the refereeing decisions.

“IT’S A DISGRACE!” screamed Didier Drogba.

    9. Luis Suarez’s handball vs Ghana in the 2010 World Cup

In the 2010 World Cup quarterfinal between Uruguay and Ghana, Luis Suárez deliberately handled the ball on the goal line in extra time to prevent a winning goal. Suárez was sent off, but Asamoah Gyan missed the resulting penalty. Uruguay went on to win the match in a penalty shootout, denying Ghana a historic semifinal spot.

    10. Alvarez cancelled penalty kick

Some parties believe the 2025 UEFA Champions League Round of 16 match between Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid was another robbery, after Julián Álvarez’s penalty was controversially disallowed during the shootout. Álvarez slipped while taking the penalty, causing the ball to make contact with both his right and left foot before going into the net. According to the Laws of the Game, a penalty kick must be struck with a single touch; any double contact, even if accidental, results in the penalty being ruled out. After a VAR review confirmed the double touch, the goal was annulled. This decision proved pivotal as Real Madrid capitalized on the mistake, winning the shootout 4–2 and advancing to the quarterfinals.

Alvarez’s disallowed penalty, four other penalty rules you might not know about

Arsenal will take on reigning Champions League winners, Real Madrid, in the quarter-finals after a dramatic penalty shootout at the Metropolitano Stadium.

Atletico Madrid secured a 1-0 victory on the night, with Conor Gallagher’s early goal leveling the tie on aggregate.

With neither side able to find a winner in extra time, the match was decided by penalties, where Real Madrid triumphed 4-2.

Antonio Rüdiger converted the decisive spot-kick to seal Madrid’s place in the next round.

However, the shootout was not without controversy.

After Kylian Mbappé, Alexander Sørloth, and Jude Bellingham successfully converted their penalties, Julian Álvarez stepped up and appeared to score, making it 2-2. But just as Federico Valverde was about to take the next penalty, referee Szymon Marciniak halted play.

VAR intervened, informing the Polish official that Álvarez’s penalty had made contact with his standing foot after he struck the ball—a rare “double touch” infringement. As a result, the goal was disallowed, meaning Madrid retained their lead.

Shortly after, Rüdiger fired home to secure Real Madrid’s passage to the quarter-finals, where they will face Arsenal.

The decision left many fans confused, as the “double touch” rule is not widely known.

Here are five lesser-known penalty rules in football:

    1. Passing a Penalty

Contrary to popular belief, a penalty kick does not have to be shot directly at goal. The taker is allowed to pass the ball forward for a teammate to finish—provided it touches another player before they strike it again. Legends like Johan Cruyff and Lionel Messi have successfully pulled off this trick, though Arsenal duo Robert Pirès and Thierry Henry famously failed in their 2005 attempt.

    2. Encroachment by Attackers or Defenders

If a teammate of the penalty taker enters the box before the ball is kicked and a goal is scored, the penalty must be retaken. If the shot is saved or missed, an indirect free kick is awarded to the defending team. Conversely, if a defender encroaches and the penalty is missed or saved, the kick must be retaken.

    3. The “Double Touch” Rule

As seen in the Álvarez controversy, if a penalty taker accidentally makes contact with the ball twice before another player touches it—such as when it rebounds off their own foot—it results in an indirect free kick for the opposing team.

    4. Feinting During the Run-Up

Players are allowed to feint during their run-up to a penalty, but once they complete their run-up, any further hesitation is considered illegal. Stopping completely before striking the ball results in an indirect free kick and possibly a yellow card for unsporting behavior.

    5. Goalkeeper Movement Restrictions

When facing a penalty, goalkeepers must have at least part of one foot on, behind, or in line with the goal line at the moment the ball is struck. Moving off the line too early can result in a retake, and repeated infractions may lead to a yellow card.

  • Man City wary of weakened Real Madrid, says Guardiola

Man City wary of weakened Real Madrid, says Guardiola

Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola said his side were well aware of Real Madrid’s habit of producing their best in tough times, with a string of injuries having depleted the visitors’ defence ahead of  tonight’s Champions League playoff.

Real and City failed to advance automatically to the last 16 as one of the top eight sides in the Champions League table after they finished 11th  and 22nd , respectively, in the new league-phase format and have to play a two-legged playoff.

The clubs will clash for a fourth consecutive year, having met in four Champions League knockout ties since 2020.

In the first leg of the playoff tie at the Etihad on Tuesday, LaLiga leaders Real will be without key defenders Dani Carvajal, Antonio Rudiger, Eder Militao and David Alaba.

“I think both teams have had problems in terms of injuries during the season. Madrid handled it much better than us because they are still top of the league and fighting against Atletico Madrid,” Guardiola told reporters on Monday.

“That shows again the consistency they have. At the end they are a huge competitor. We know it.

“We have faced it many times with them and how in the tough moments they bring the best of them – we know it. Of course we have to make two good games to go through.”

Since the sides’ met last year, Real have strengthened an already formidable attack with the acquisition of Kylian Mbappe, who is supported by Rodrygo, Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Jr.

Guardiola said it would be impossible to shut out Real’s forwards, adding: “They are exceptional.

“How they combine, the runners, the ability one-against-one, how they keep the ball, all four are exceptional. Everybody knows it, so you have to reduce that involvement as much as possible, knowing that it’s going to happen, accept it.”

City have endured a testing time on the pitch this season and are languishing fifth in the Premier League, 15 points adrift of leaders Liverpool, with the prospect of a record-extending fifth successive title all but dashed already.

Defender Ruben Dias said the campaign has been his most challenging since joining City in 2020, but the Portuguese international stressed he was still optimistic about the club’s chances in the Champions League.

“I’m a firm believer that even in the most difficult scenario, most difficult beginning, you can still do something and achieve something beautiful in the end,” he told reporters.

“Right now, we are still in that position. Obviously we know how difficult our opposition is and how difficult our way will be to get there.

“But it’s a question of believing in what we have in the dressing room and we have loads of talent. We just have to use them in the right way. With the right belief, we are able to do anything.”

    Brazilian Marcelo retires aged 36

Brazil defender Marcelo has announced his retirement from football at the age of 36.

The left-back, one of the most decorated players in history, played 58 times for Brazil.

After coming through the ranks of Brazilian club Fluminense, Marcelo joined Real Madrid in 2007 at the age of 18.

He won 25 pieces of major silverware in 15 years at the Bernabeu, including five Champions League titles and six La Liga titles.

“At 18, Real Madrid knocked on my door and I arrived here. Now, I can proudly say that I am a true Madrileno,” Marcelo said in a video on his social media.

“Sixteen seasons, 25 titles, five Champions Leagues, one of the captains and so many magical nights at the Bernabeu. What a journey!

“My journey as a player ends here, but I still have so much to give to football. Thank you for everything.”

Marcelo was named club captain in 2021, becoming the first non-Spaniard to be given the armband at the club in 117 years.

He left Madrid at the end of the 2021-22 season to join Greek side Olympiacos, but terminated his deal just five months after joining.

Madrid top rich list with over 1 billion euros revenue

Real Madrid became the first soccer team to register one billion euros ($1.04 billion) in revenue in a single season in 2023-24, with the Spanish side topping the Deloitte Football Money League as the world’s highest revenue-generating club once again.

Real Madrid had overtaken Manchester City to return to the summit after they generated total revenue of 831 million euros in the 2022-23 season.

Three trophies in the 2023-24 campaign — including LaLiga and the Champions League — plus increased matchday revenue following the completion of renovation works at the Bernabeu Stadium ensured they stayed top of the list.

Deloitte said Real’s matchday revenue doubled to 248 million euros while a new sleeve sponsorship and increased merchandise sales produced commercial revenue of 482 million euros — a 19% increase.

The report also said that the top 20 revenue generating clubs in the world made a record 11.2 billion euros in the 2023-24 season thanks to record matchday, broadcast and commercial revenues.

Real’s revenue dwarfs that of even City, who remain in second place in the Money League with 838 million euros in revenue.

Although City beat their own revenue record and remain the highest revenue-generating club in the lucrative English Premier League, the gap between first and second (208 million euros) has never been bigger.

Paris St Germain (806 million euros), Manchester United (771 million) and Bayern Munich (765 million) round out the top five.

The need for European soccer was highlighted by Juventus’ fall from 11th  to 16th  after the Serie A side were excluded from European competition in 2023-24 over breaches of UEFA’s Club Licensing and Financial Fair Play rules.

On the other hand, clubs like Arsenal (717 million euros), Borussia Dortmund (514 million), Newcastle United (372 million) and Aston Villa (310 million) grew revenues by playing in various European competitions.

“While commercial revenue dominates the income of the top 10 Money League clubs, broadcast income remains crucial for teams in the second half of the rankings,” Tim Bridge, lead partner in the Deloitte Sports Business Group, said.

“As competitions expand and create more broadcast and matchday opportunities, these can further increase the earning potential for clubs.”

Thanks to their commercial revenue streams, Liverpool (715 million euros), Tottenham Hotspur (615 million) and Chelsea (546 million) still managed to stay in the top 10 despite reduced broadcast income after missing out on the Champions League.

Barcelona also saw a 63 million euros fall in matchday revenue after they were forced to play at the smaller Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys while the Camp Nou was being redeveloped.

But the Spanish club remain top of the list of women’s sides for a third straight year with 17.9 million euros in revenue, a 26% increase from the 2022-23 season.

Arsenal Women (17.9 million euros) are second, followed by Chelsea (13.4 million), Manchester United (10.7 million) and Real Madrid (10.5 million).
