Man United overtake Madrid from Deloitte Football Money League

Real Madrid have fallen from the top of the Deloitte Football Money League for the first time since 2005 and have slipped below Manchester United and Barcelona.
The study – which has been running from 1996 – ranks football clubs in terms of their turnover and whilst United’s surge to the top is seen as significant, it is warned that they will fall again next year due to pound sterling’s fall against the euro.
At £515m, the Red Devils have become the first team to break the £500m turnover barrier in a year and is just shy of £50m than that generated by Barca, who pipped Madrid into second place by less than £100,000.
“You can’t really look past Manchester United returning to the top spot and it is because of their ability to make commercial deals that are way ahead of their peers,” the author Tim Bridge told PA Sport.
The only other Spanish side in the top 20 are Atletico Madrid, who rank 13th.

  • Real Madrid transfer ban reduced

    Real Madrid transfer ban reduced

The Court of Arbitration for Sport on Tuesday reduced Real Madrid’s two-window transfer ban to one.

Madrid, along with city rivals Atletico, were hit with bans in January 2016 after FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee found them to be in breach of regulations “relating to the international transfer and registration of players under the age of 18.”

Spanish champions Barcelona was hit with a similar sanction in 2014, Goal reports.

An appeal to FIFA failed in September, prompting Madrid to take its claim to CAS.

That punishment has now been halved with the club able to strengthen its squad when the window opens at the end of the current season.

However, Madrid will be inactive in January.

Despite CAS ruling partially in its favour, the club released a statement outlining its displeasure at the verdict and that initially delivered by FIFA.

The statement reads: “The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has today informed Real Madrid CF of its decision which partially upheld the appeal lodged by the club against the FIFA resolution which imposed a sanction forbidding the signing of players for two transfer windows, reducing said sanction to just one period, corresponding to the January 2017 transfer window.

“The decision highlights the injustice of the original ban imposed by FIFA, although the club regrets that the CAS lacked the courage to revoke the ruling entirely.”

In explaining its decision, a CAS statement reads: “The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has issued its decision in the arbitration between Real Madrid and FIFA.

“The Spanish club’s appeal was partially accepted. Therefore, the decision of the FIFA Appeals Board (FIFA) is cancelled and replaced by this CAS decision in which the following elements have been modified: Real Madrid is prohibited from registering new players, both nationally and internationally, during a full transfer period (initially two periods); Real Madrid must pay a fine of CHF240,000 (initially CHF 360,000) (£225,000, initially £337,000).”

The CAS statement added: “In summary, the sole arbitrator determined that certain offences alleged by FIFA could be confirmed, but not all.

“Given that the violations committed by Real Madrid were less serious and fewer than the FIFA judicial authorities had affirmed, the sole arbitrator found that the sanctions imposed on Real Madrid had to be reduced.”

Real Madrid hit World Club Cup final

European champions Real Madrid progressed to the 2016 FIFA Club World Cup final after defeating Mexico’s Club America 2-0 at the Yokohama International Stadium  in Japan on  Thursday.

Karim Benzema bagged a late first-half goal, while Cristiano Ronaldo sealed the victory with a second goal in second-half injury time, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

The Spanish La Liga leaders will meet Japanese champions Kashima Antlers in the showpiece event on Sunday.

Real Madrid, who won the trophy in 2014, dominated early exchanges between the two continental champions.

But the Mexicans created few anxious moments for the Spanish giants on the counter.

Oribe Peralta shot narrowly wide from just inside the area on 12 minutes, before Alex Ibarra valiantly won the ball and charged towards goal on 21 minutes.

But his effort from long range was held by Keylor Navas in goal for the Spanish giants.

Real Madrid mounted considerable pressure on the CONCACAF Champions League winners as the first half progressed.

Lucas Vazquez raced to the byline and delivered a cross from the right to Ronaldo but the Portugal forward’s downward header hit the post.

Toni Kroos followed up with an effort a minute later, with Munoz reacting quickly to deny him.

Benzema broke the deadlock on the stroke of half time after slotting in Germany international Kroos lovely through ball.

  • FIFA uphold Real, Atletico transfer ban

FIFA uphold Real, Atletico transfer ban

Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid will be unable to register new players for the next two transfer windows after their appeals to FIFA were rejected on Thursday.

The two clubs had been charged with breaching FIFA regulations relating to the protection and transfer of minors, Goal reports.

Following FIFA’s decision, the Spanish sides will suffer a similar fate to that of Barcelona, who had previously been found guilty of breaking the laws in 2014.

“The FIFA Appeal Committee has decided to reject the appeals lodged by Spanish clubs Atlético de Madrid and Real Madrid and to confirm in their entirety the decisions rendered by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee in the respective cases relating to the protection of minors,” Goal quoted the committee as saying in a statement.

“Both clubs are to serve a transfer ban that prevents them from registering any players at national and international level for the next two complete and consecutive registration periods for breaching articles 5, 9, 19 and 19bis as well as annexes 2 and 3 of the Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players (the “Regulations”).

“The transfer ban applies to each club as a whole – with the exception of the women’s, futsal and beach soccer teams – and does not prevent the release of players.

“Additionally, Atlético de Madrid and Real Madrid have been fined CHF 900,000 and CHF 360,000 respectively, while both clubs have been issued with a reprimand and a warning and given 90 days in which to regularise the situation of all minor players concerned.”

  • Real Madrid owed percentage of Higuain fee

Real Madrid owed percentage of Higuain fee

Gonzalo Higuain’s transfer to Juventus may have delighted fans in Turin, but the Real Madrid hierarchy also had a smile on their faces when the deal was announced as they will receive €2.25 million of the €90m fee.

Thanks to FIFA’s training compensation mechanism, Real Madrid are entitled to 2.5 percent of the transfer given that five percent of the fee must be distributed proportionally among the clubs to have trained the player between the ages of 12 and 23.

World football’s governing body outlines the breakdown of that reserved in Article 21 of its ‘Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players’ document.

Each club that owned a player between the ages of 12 and 15 receives 0.25 percent of the fee for each of those years, while 0.5 percent of the fee is given to a club for each season they trained the player between the ages of 16 and 23.

Since Los Blancos had the Argentine on their books between the ages of 19 and 23, they are due 2.5 percent of the Serie A record fee, which is €2.25m, the payment of which is the responsibility of Juventus.

“The club with which the player is registered is responsible for paying training compensation within 30 days of registration to every club with which the player has previously been registered and that has contributed to his training starting from the season of his 12th birthday,” states FIFA’s regulations.
