REAL MADRID WIN 11TH CHAMPIONS LEAGUE TITLE

REAL Madrid are the kings of Europe for a record 11th time after they beat Atletico Madrid 5-3 on penalties in the San Siro, Milan.

In a penalty shoot-out where neither goalkeeper looked like saving any spot-kicks, Juanfran hit Atleti’s fourth penalty against the post to give Cristiano Ronaldo the opportunity to win the trophy for Los Blancos and the former Manchester United man blasted home past Jan Oblak.

Sergio Ramos’ close range finish – television replays showed the defender was offside – put Zinedine Zidane’s side ahead in a first half they dominated before Atletico striker Antoine Griezmann blasted a penalty off the crossbar after the restart.

Substitute Yannick Carrasco finally made Diego Simeone’s side’s second half dominance tell when he fired home from inside the six yard box.

However, Atletico failed to go for the jugular in extra time and will rue not making the most of their opponent’s poor display, a decent first 45 minutes aside.

This was a second heartbreak dished out by Los Blancos to their city rivals in the space of third years on European football’s grandest stage, Atletico having led the 2014 final courtesy of Diego Godin’s header until Sergio Ramos headed home an equaliser in the fourth minute of stoppage time, Real winning 4-1 after extra time.

As a spectacle the game left a lot to be desired, Atletico failing to impose their high tempo, rapid counter-attacking game for much of the game while Real, with Gareth Bale and Ronaldo in particular failing to shine on the night.

UEFA: Iheanacho eyes final berth with Man City

There is no doubt that the 4-2 loss to Southampton may have deflated the confidence of Manchester City, but Nigeria’s Kelechi Iheanacho believes if given chance he could inspire the team to the final of the UEFA Champions League.

Iheanacho’s brace could not save Man City from losing at St Mary’s on Sunday, but the former Golden Eaglets star is optimistic that they have the wherewithal to turn the table against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu on Monday.

“This game is not good preparation for us,” he said. “But we will keep it behind us, focus and train, and go to the Bernabeu and hope we qualify. Unfortunately for me, we lost so the goals didn’t mean anything but I will keep working hard to get some more. If I play, I need to work hard for the team and help them qualify for the final if we get the goals,” he told The Manchester Evening News.

He added: “I am in with a shot of being involved in Madrid, so I will keep working hard. Nothing is enough in football. I will keep working hard to convince the team that I need to be here. It doesn’t matter where you find yourself, you have to focus and concentrate and work for the team. When the ball falls to you, you have to put it in. It’s going to be a big challenge for us but we will keep our heads down and keep working hard to get there.”

Coach Manuel Pellegrini will ring changes after resting his top players for the trip to the south coast, but Iheanacho said: “It is a dream come true for me and I am happy if I go there. I hope we do well there and there is a great atmosphere. I haven’t been before, but I am happy to go there to get a win.”

  • Real, Atletico get two windows transfer ban

Real, Atletico get two windows transfer ban

World football’s governing body, FIFA,  on Thursday suspended  Real Madrid  and Atletico de Madrid  from registering players in the next two windows.

The Spanish sides were found to have broken the organisation’s rules in relation to international transfers of players under 18 years of age, Goal reports.

According to FIFA Disciplinary Committee, Atletico was fined €820,000, while the team city rivals will pay €330,000.

The two clubs will be permitted to sign and register players in the current transfer period, which closes at the end of January, but will then be unable to bring in new additions until the summer of 2017.

The two clubs were found to have violated several provisions concerning the international transfer and first registration of minor players as well as other relevant provisions with regard to the registration and participation of certain players in competitions.

Both clubs are to serve a transfer ban that prevents them from registering any players at national and international level for the next two complete and consecutive registration periods for breaching articles 5, 9, 19 and 19bis as well as annexes 2 and 3 of the Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players.

  • Barcelona waltz past Real Madrid in El Classico

Barcelona thrashed Real Madrid 4-0 in Saturday’s El Classico played in Santiago Bernabeu, with Uruguayan striker, Luis Suarez, netting a brace.

Real manager, Rafael Benitez, had vowed to attack the Liga leaders and he named Karim Benzema and James Rodriguez in his starting line-up, but it was Barca who took the lead when Suarez fired beyond Keylor Navas in the 11th minute, Goal reports.

Neymar made it 2-0 shortly before the break and a stunning goal from Andres Iniesta put the champions firmly in charge early in the second period before Suarez’s delicate finish made it four after Messi – who came on in the 55th minute – had fed Jordi Alba.

Madrid’s players never looked comfortable in Benitez’s deep-lying set-up and the front three were isolated throughout, though Claudio Bravo denied Cristiano Ronaldo superbly late on.

The result means Barcelona has moved six points clear of Madrid at the top of the table and piles further pressure on Benitez’s shoulders ahead of a crucial few weeks before the winter break.

  • Spanish La Liga kicks off

    Spanish La Liga kicks off

Barcelona starts the defence of its La Liga title on Sunday at Athletic Bilbao, the team who thrashed the European champions 5-1 on aggregate in the Spanish Super Cup.

The BBC reports that Luis Enrique’s squad appears weaker than last season’s Treble-winning selection, with Pedro and Xavi leaving.

Summer signings Arda Turan and Aleix Vidal cannot play until January because of a transfer ban.

Real Madrid begins its season under new boss Rafael Benitez with a match away to newly promoted Sporting Gijon.

Real officials sacked Carlo Ancelotti after finishing two points behind Barca and exiting in the Champions League semi-final last season.

Benitez’s major outfield signings have been right-back Danilo from Porto and midfielder Mateo Kovacic from Inter Milan.

  • Espanyol’s Casilla joins Real Madrid

    Espanyol’s Casilla joins Real Madrid

Espanyol has agreed a deal for goalkeeper Kiko Casilla to join Real Madrid, the Catalan club said on Friday.

The 28-year-old Spain international arrives following the departure of Real Madrid legend Iker Casillas to Porto and will provide competition for Keylor Navas and the inexperienced Fernando Pacheco in the first team, Reuters reported.

“Espanyol and Real Madrid have reached an agreement in the last few hours for the transfer of Kiko Casilla,” Reuters quoted the Catalan side as saying in a statement on its website.

The deal is reported to involve a payment of around six million euros ($6.54 million) by Real, who retained a 50 percent ownership of Casilla — a product of its youth academy — after he moved to Espanyol in 2007.

Casilla has made one appearance for Spain, in November last year when he came on as a second-half substitute in a 1-0 defeat to World champions Germany, but was not included in coach Vicente del Bosque’s latest squad.

  • UCL: Barcelona to play Bayern Munich in semi final

UCL: Barcelona to play Bayern Munich in semi final

    Real meets Juventus

Barcelona has been drawn against Pep Guardiola’s Bayern Munich in the Champions League semi-finals.

The other last-four tie sees Juventus – playing in its first semi-final since 2003 – facing Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid, the defending champions, the BBC reports.

The first legs will be played on 5 and 6 May, with the return matches a week later.

In the Europa League, holders Sevilla face Fiorentina, while Rafael Benitez’s Napoli will square up against Ukraine’s Dnipro.

Bayern boss Guardiola won 13 trophies as a manager – including the Champions League in 2009 and 2011 – during four years at Barcelona.

He has reached the Champions League semi-finals in each of his six seasons as a manager, four with Barca and now two with Bayern.

Ancelotti will also be reunited with one of his former clubs, with the Italian having managed the Turin side from 1999 to 2001.

The draw leaves open the possibility of a Barcelona v Real Madrid European Cup final, something which has never happened before. The arch-rivals are also battling it out for the Spanish league title this season.

Real Madrid reached the last four by defeating city rivals Atletico – in a repeat of last season’s final – thanks to Javier Hernandez’s late goal.

Bayern Munich thrashed Porto 6-1 at home to overturn a first-leg deficit and progress 7-4 on aggregate.

Things were more straightforward for Barcelona, who beat Paris St-Germain 5-1 overall, and Juventus, who beat Monaco 1-0 over two legs.

This season’s final will be played at Berlin’s Olympic Stadium on 6 June.

  • Athletic Bilbao stun Real Madrid

    Athletic Bilbao stun Real Madrid

REAL Madrid were beaten 1-0 by Athletic Bilbao at San Mames on Saturday meaning if Barcelona beat Rayo Vallecano Sunday lunchtime they will move to the top of La Liga.

Gareth Bale hit the post from 50 yards out but it was the closest Carlo Ancelotti’s team came as an Aritz Aduriz header in the first half was enough to give Athletic a famous victory that could seriously derail Real Madrid’s title charge.

They started brightly enough with Karim Benzema swapping passes with Marcelo and crossing for Ronaldo, only for Xabier Etxieta’s clearance to stop the ball reaching Madrid’s top scorer.

Athletic had been on a good run with two league wins and a cup semi-final victory and they were soon into their stride with forwards Iñaki Williams and Aduriz stretching a Madrid defence under-protected by a midfield still missing Luka Modric who will not be back until midweek in the Champions League.

When Athletic’s goal came it was that midfield weakness that created the opening. Mikel Rico had all the time and space he wanted to cross for Aduriz and the on-form centre-forward rose to head home his 18th goal of the season.

Isco should have got across to Rico more quickly.

Pepe might also be disappointed he was beaten so easily by Aduriz in the air, but the Athletic striker, who scored twice in midweek to put Athletic in the Cup Final, is on such good form that there is talk of a Spain call-up despite his 34 years. He hung for a moment in the air having got in front of the Real Madrid defender and powered his header past Iker Casillas.

Real looked disjointed all over the pitch.

Toni Kroos kicked-out at Andoni Iraola and was booked and Asier Illaramendi was yellow carded shortly afterwards for a foul on Iker Muniain. Athletic also had Aduriz and Etxeita booked but they were keeping their heads and their shape better than their rivals.

Madrid raised the tempo in the second half and Bale lead the assault on Athletic’s goal. When he tricked his way down the right and pulled the ball back from the byline it looked like producing the equalizer.

But before Ronaldo could sweep the ball home from three yards out Gorka Iraizoz got a hand to the cross to divert it to safety.

Real Madrid hooks Schalke 04, Chelsea meets PSG

Manchester City will play Barcelona in the Champions League last 16 for a second consecutive year.

Chelsea battles Paris St-Germain, and Arsenal squares up against Monaco in ties to be played in February and March, the BBC reports.

Champions Real Madrid will face Schalke, with last season’s beaten finalists Atletico Madrid taking on Bayer Leverkusen.

Bayern Munich plays Shakhtar Donetsk, Juventus faces Borussia Dortmund and Basel tackles Porto.

Manchester City narrowly qualified, needing a final-day win over Roma to progress, but finishing second to Bayern Munich in the group phase has seen the English champions come up against four-time European kings Barcelona.

In last season’s first knockout game, the Catalans defeated Manchester City 4-1 on aggregate.

Chelsea, who finished ahead of Schalke as group winners, will play Paris St-Germain for the second consecutive year, having beaten the French champions in dramatic circumstances in last year’s quarter-finals.

There is added interest in that game as Chelsea sold defender David Luiz to PSG for a reported £40m in the summer.

Arsenal, who finished below Borussia Dortmund in the group stage, comes up against a side handled by Gunners boss Arsene Wenger from 1987 to 1994.
