“The present recruitment is for degree holders and will last for three weeks and after that, the selected ones will proceed for the written interview.

“Over aged people, tattooed persons, falsified results, statement of results over five years and people with some physical impediments will be disqualified from the exercise,” he said.

On the number of applicants shortlisted in Enugu, Amaraizu said that would be determined after the exercise.

“We have started and you can see that it is going on peacefully.

“The exercise is done in batches to avoid any form of rush or stampede.

“This command will screen the applicants thoroughly to ensure that the best get the Job,” he said.

One of the shortlisted candidates at the venue, Kingsley Kenechukwu, expressed joy for scaling through the first step of achieving his dream.

Kenechukwu said that he had been dreaming of becoming a policeman to defend and fight for his country.

“I am happy that the recruitment is transparent and peaceful,” he said.

Another applicant, Samson Okeke, told NAN that he was happy that the exercise was going on well but observed that more personnel were needed to expedite the process.

“The exercise is not moving fast as I expected and I wish more personnel would be deployed to accommodate more applicants,” Okeke said.

`The commission wishes to reiterate that the recruitment forms are free and filled online without any person to person contact.

  • Army discovers new Boko Haram recruitment strategy

Army discovers new Boko Haram recruitment strategy

The Army has said Boko Haram has devised a strategy of recruiting youths, especially in the Northeast.

Acting Director of Defence (Information) Brig.-Gen. Rabe Abubakar said in a statement that the Boko Haram terrorists gave loans to young entrepreneurs and artisans to induce and recruit them into the group.

The statement reads: “It has come to the knowledge of the Defence Headquarters that Boko Haram terrorists have devised another means of recruiting unsuspecting youths.   In this clandestine dispensation, Boko Haram insurgents have resorted to providing loans to young entrepreneurs and artisans in the Northeast to induce them for recruitment.

“The major targets of the unholy business engagement are youths in the Northeast, especially butchers, traders, tailors, beauticians and other vocational entrepreneurs, who can be easily enticed with such loans without paying attention to sundry inherent dangers associated with the acceptance of such goodies from this satanic group or unfamiliar source.  After such loans, the beneficiaries are given the option of either joining the group or risk being killed if they fail to pay the loan as and when due, whereas the payment has been surreptitiously programmed to fail by the benefactor, the Boko Haram.

“It is pertinent to state that having been effectively decimated and degraded, the remnant or surviving splinter groups of Boko Haram are desperate to recruit more people into their rank and file as a result of sustained onslaught against them by the troops. The Defence Headquarters advises the public, especially those in the Northeast, to constantly be wary and conscious of tactics of the desperate Boko Haram. They should be guided to avoid loan or financial assistance from non-conventional source, but from conventional financial institutions, such as banks, organised trade unions or institutionalised savings and loans establishments. Acting otherwise may lead to painful and untimely death from the blood-thirsty Boko Haram terrorists.”

  • NLC seeks transparency in police recruitment

NLC seeks transparency in police recruitment

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called for transparency in the police recruitment approved by the Federal Government. Ten thousand are to be recruited in the exercise.

NLC President Ayuba Wabba said the recruitment would also help reduce employment in the country.

“We appeal to the police authorities and other Nigerians in the position of authority to conduct this  exercise with all sense of responsibility, care, transparency, justice, equity and minimum discomfort or pain to the applicants.  There is hardly any family that does not have an army of applicants. This, however, should be no justification for subjecting this process to a selfish end or abuse,” he said.

He urged the government to ensure that other sectors become vibrant to employ workers.

In another development, the NLC has praised the National Assembly and President Muhammadu  Buhari for the “rigorous scrutiny” of the 2016 budget.

In a statement, Wabba hailed the National Assembly for exposing the imperfections in the budget and  President Buhari for his courage in exposing the padding of the budget by a cabal.

Wabba said it was within the power of President to withhold his assent until the National Assembly sends the details to him.

He said: “It is within the province of Mr President to do so as a matter of personal style or principle. More over, we have had a presidential precedent. But beyond all this, it is pertinent to note that, the right of due diligence which the National Assembly exercised to the hilt and led to the unearthing of discrepancies in the budget should similarly be extended to Mr President’’.

Recruitment of 10,000 policemen will address youth unemployment —Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that the recruitment of 10,000 policemen would address the challenge of youth unemployment in the country.

The President made the disclosure at a ceremonial parade to mark the 2016 Police Week in Abuja yesterday.

Buhari, who was represented by the Minister of Interior, Lt.-Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau (rtd), said the initiative would also address the manpower gap in the police.

He advised the management of the police force to put national interest in mind in the recruitment in line with the reform agenda of the Ministry of Interior.

“In carrying out this exercise, I expect the Nigeria Police to put national interest as the foremost,“ he said.

Buhari said that community policing had become more imperative considering the current security challenges in the country.

He said that it was in view of this that his administration had rested the internal security of the country on enhanced budget, addressing social factors among others.

The president said that government had funded the procurement of over 1,000 patrol vehicles and other logistics to strengthen operational capacity of the police.

He said that in order to address the challenge of highly organised crime, government had strengthened the technical intelligence capacity of the police.

“No nation thrives without security, and neither can a nation lay claim to security without an efficient police service.

“This administration shall continue to support initiatives that will guarantee the reform and modernisation of the Nigeria Police.

“I must clearly recognise that the nation expects so much from the police,“ he said.

He reassured Nigerians of government’s determination to bequeath a reformed, re-oriented, well trained, well equipped and highly motivated police.

Buhari said that the dream could only be attained with the support of the citizens.

Earlier, the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Solomon Arase, had said that with the support of the citizens, the police was determined to fight criminals who continued to threaten the peace and security of the nation.

He commended officers, who in spite of the challenges had continued to display loyalty and zeal to confront internal insurgency.

“We recognise the sacrifice of officers and men who sweat it out under the scorching sun, the drizzling rains and the cold nights to stay alert in order to ensure the safety and security of the people.

He said that the Police Week was aimed at restoring the lost glory of the Force.

Buhari also revealed that the Federal Government has funded the procurement of over 1,000 Patrol Vehicles and other logistics to strengthen the operational capacity of the Safer Highway Patrol Scheme and support the deployment of police personnel towards security stabilization and restoration of civil authority in the North East.

On the need for community input in policing, he said, “the need for a police system that is driven by community input in Nigeria has even become more imperative considering our current national security challenges in which Kidnapping, armed robbery, murder, transnational crimes, terrorism and other organized crimes have evolved to threaten our national values and developmental strides.”

Also speaking, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Solomon Arase vowed to redeem the image of the Nigeria Police Force and also deal with criminal elements who threaten the existence of the Force.

According to him, “We are determined to take the criminal battle to the footsteps of elements that continue to threaten our peace and security and remind the nation that with their support, the new police Force vows to defeat the threat of terror and other internal security threats.

“We are passing a clear message to the criminal community that the wind of change is now blowing through the Police, a cultural reorientation that is premised on adoption of international best policing practices is emerging, and a new Police Force that will display team spirit, loyalty, zeal, courage, civility and renewed commitment towards confronting criminal elements, hand-in-hand with the citizens is evolving.”

Arase who reassured the Federal Government of its commitment to restore its lost primacy also assured the citizens of its determination to live the true meaning of the common saying ‘Police is your friend’.

PSC warns against extortion as police begin recruitment of 10,000

The recruitment of 10,000 policemen by the Police Service Commission (PSC) will begin today.

President Muhammadu Buhari, last year, at the National Security Summit in Abuja directed the recruitment of 10,000 Nigerians into the force to address the shortfall in manpower.

Speaking on the recruitment yesterday, the PSC Chairman, Mike Okiro, warned its workers, who would be involved in the screening of candidates, to avoid any act that would compromise the integrity of the exercise.

He said any worker involved in any misconduct during the exercise would be sanctioned in line with the public service rules and may be prosecuted for sabotage.

The PSC chairman urged candidates to desist from indulging or inducing the commission’s workers as anyone caught would be arrested and prosecuted.

He spoke in a statement in Abuja yesterday by the commission’s Head of Press and Public Relation Unit, Ikechukwu Ani.

The statement reads: “Staff must live above board as the commission is ready to make a huge success of this presidential assignment in line with its resolution to discharge its duties within the ambit of the law, transparently, and according to laid down rules.

“The Nigeria Police Force deserves the best brains in the Nigerian society and the commission will ensure that only the best will be engaged as policemen, who will sustain the cherished tradition of the Force and help to maintain peace as well as securing life and property of Nigerians and non-Nigerians.”

He reiterated that there will be no short cut in the exercise as everything has been put in place to ensure that the integrity of the process is preserved at all stages of the exercise.

  • New recruitment guidelines for MDAs coming

A new policy on recruitments in Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) is in the offing, the Director-General, Bureau of Public Service Reforms (BPSR), Dr  Joe Abah, has said.

Speaking in Abuja, he said the agency would work with the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation to implement the policy, aimed at preventing MDAs from employing beyond their budget.

“We are, similarly, working with the office of the Head of Service to put a manpower budget defence, which means you cannot recruit unless you have the manpower provided for in your budget. So, people will have to come to the office of the head of service to defend their manpower budgets before they are allowed to recruit,” he explained.

According to Abah, the guidelines will help tackle improper recruitment in agencies, such as employment racketeering, bloated work force and ghost workers.

He said a committee had also been set up to look into the implementation of the Oronsaye Report.

The BPSR chief stated that the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) recently approved the re-constitution of the implementation committee that would start work later this month. “You will be aware that the Oronsaye Report includes a management and staff audit recruitment of some parastatals and agencies.

“The BPSR recently published a guide on how to properly manage agencies and parastatals. And that includes the performance improvement tool that agencies can use to make sure that their performance meet the needs of Nigerians going forward,’’ Abah added.

He said the implementation of the Oronsaye Report would address most of the issues faced in MDAs.

Police begin recruitment of 10,000 officers April 1

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has unveiled a portal for the recruitment of 10,000 officers as directed by President Muhammadu Buhari.

At the National Security Summit last year, Buhari ordered the Police to recruit more men to boost security.

The Commission Chairman, Mike Okiro, who unveiled the portal, said the portal would be opened to the public on April 1.

In a statement, yesterday, PSC’s Head of Press and Public Relations Ikechukwu Ani said the recruitment process online is free for intending officers.

Okiro said there had been no recruitment into the Police for over five years due to financial constraint.

He said thousands of policemen, who died in service, dismissed or retired, had not been replaced since the last five years, leaving the Force under-manned and overstretched.

Interested Nigerians have been asked to access the portal through the commission’s website www.psc.gov.ng or that of the Nigeria Police Force, www.npf.gov.ng.

On whether a fee would be paid for the forms, Okiro said: “We are not charging money; it is free, absolutely free and the portal has been structured in a way that there will be no short cut. So, everybody must go through due process”.

The statement added: “The commission will be recruiting candidates into the three entry points of the Nigeria Police Force which are Constable, Cadet Inspector and Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP). There will also be recruitment into the Specialist cadre.”
