  • Kowa recruits volunteers

The candidate of the Kowa Party, Mr. Thompson Osadolor, said he is campaigning with no fewer than 100,000 volunteers and 200 others recruited to propagate the party’s message of hope in the 18 local government areas and the 192 wards of Edo State.

Osadolor, who disclosed this in an interview with reporters in Benin City, the Edo State capital, yesterday added that the party is campaigning seriously for the September 10 governorship election, because neither the All Progressives Congress (APC) nor the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has a serious plan for the people.

The Kowa flag bearer said if he gets a chance to govern the state his policy trust would revolve round human capital development.

He said the volunteers who are fully equipped with the party’s manifesto would soon spread out across the nook and crannies of the state to start delivering the message.

Osadolor said he adopted the approach to ensure that the message gets to the people, so that they can make an informed choice.

He said: “Like I have said in every fora, the choice is no longer between the APC and the PDP, but other political parties, especially Kowa. Our message of hope is that we have come to rescue the people from the challenges of unemployment, qualitative and affordable education, food security though a robust agricultural development, youths and women empowerment among others.

“The present government has done its best in the area infrastructural development, but development goes beyond that. So many things, such as portable water and development of the tourism sector, have been left untouched. We hope to do more in the area of infrastructural development and focus on these areas that have been left idle for so long a time.

“It is my belief that the state will not only become a reference point in the area of good governance, but also the standard of living of the people would improve tremendously.”

Osadolor said the 200 recruits will be motivated by payment of honourarium, “because their jobs were quite different from that of the volunteers”.

He added: “For the avoidance of doubt, interested persons are expected to pick and fill the forms which will be available at the party’s campaign flag-off in Benin on Wednesday.

“Though their work terminates soon after the elections, but we hope to re-absorb them after winning the September 10 election.

“But, for now, their job is before and during the poll and their brief is different from that of the volunteers.”

Niger recruits 40 doctors, 70 nurses

Niger State government has recruited 70 nurses and 40 doctors, of which 10 are specialists, to increase manpower in the health sector.

It has also begun a clinical death review audit to query medical death cases and ensure that no death occurs due to negligence on the part of any health worker.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Mustapha Jibril, disclosed this during the launch of the Family Health Plus (FH+) project and the inauguration of the governor’s wife, Dr. Amina Sani Bello, as the ambassador of family planning and standard-bearer of FH+ project in the state.

He said the recruitment of the workers was aimed at revitalising the health sector and improving the health status and quality of life of the people.

Jibril, who said no death would go unaccounted for, added that the government has started a clinical and death review audit to query death cases.

According to him, punitive measures will be taken in the case of high negligence on the part of any health worker.

“Some clinical workers are facing the disciplinary committee due to their negligence. We are working to revitalise the private hospital board because most of these private hospitals keep people in their hospitals and refer them to general hospitals when they are about to die. We are working to ensure that no one dies out of negligence.”

The commissioner said the contraceptive prevalence of women in the state is the lowest in the Northcentral with seven per cent, noting that 11 per cent of the populace die from unwanted pregnancy and fake abortion, which is due to lack of child spacing that enables the women to recover from the challenges of previous child birth.

Immigration tragedy: Fed Govt gives jobs to 105

Activities in the Ministry of Interior were yesterday morning disrupted by protesting “dispersed recruits” of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS).

They said the protest followed the alleged refusal by the ministry to allow them resume after they had been trained and given letters of appointment.

The protesters were among 2,000 Nigerians recruited into the service last year by the President Goodluck Jonathan administration after the recruitment exercise, which followed the botched 2014 exercise.

They arrived the ministry at 9 am and demanded to see the Minister, Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazzau (retd).

Some security men drawn from the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) as well as personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) prevented any breach of the peace.

Although the minister was not in the office, the Permanent Secretary, Bassey Akpayung, had entered his office before the protesters besieged the premises.

The protesters said they had written to relevant committees of the National Assembly, who referred their case to Dambazau.

After speaking with security operatives, the protesters delegated Solomon Ojigbe and two others to represent them in talks with the permanent secretary.

“We were recruited, trained and dispersed. All we want is reinstatement”, some of their placards read.

The protesters said they were recruited under presidential order and wondered why they were suspended by the President Muhammadu Buhari administration.

Speaking with reporters, Ojigbe said many of his colleagues resigned from their jobs to take up the Immigration job offer.

“So many of us here resigned from our jobs. After the botched recruitment exercise in 2014, a presidential committee was set up to re-conduct the exercise and we went through a rigorous and transparent process.

“We went through the requisite training for the three months we were in camp and we were issued appointment letters and made to buy our service uniforms and other accoutrements,” he explained.

    105 candidates get automatic employment

The Federal Government has given automatic employment to 105 candidates and relatives of the botched 2014 Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) recruitment as compensation for those that died and sustained injuries during the exercise.

Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior Mr. Bassey Akpanyung made this known in a statement in Abuja.

The statement said after due verification, employment was given to  three family members of each deceased applicant from the aborted exercise, of which 15 families were identified, and a total of 45 family members selected.

It said that 60 others who were injured in the exercise were also given employment after verification by relevant government agencies.

“After verification, 15 families were identified, and a total of 45 family members selected from the deceased families.

“Similarly, approval was given for those who were injured in the same exercise to be employed.

“After due verification by relevant agencies of government, 60 of those affected were considered for appointment ,” it said.

The statement added that the  two categories of beneficiaries are now undergoing training at various camps of the NIS in compliance with the presidential directive.

It said that the recruitment conducted by the Special Presidential Committee constituted in the wake of the aborted exercise of March 2014 was being looked into.

The ministry advised those affected in the exercise to remain calm and observe decorum while the ministry resolves the matter.

  • Police consider psychiatric screening of recruits, officers

Police consider psychiatric screening of recruits, officers

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Solomon Arase, has said the Nigeria Police Force is considering conducting psychiatric test on recruits and serving officers.

Arase stated this at the Nigeria Police Force Health Policy Revalidation meeting in Abuja on Tuesday.

He said that the initiative became necessary following incidents of indiscriminate use of firearms by personnel of the force.

The IGP said that inadequate manpower had exposed officers to working for longer hours.

He said that the force was also considering establishing a Trauma Centre for its officers because of the nature of their job.

“The Police should be concerned about the mental health of officers, “ he said.

It would be recalled that Arase had advised Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) to always determine the mental awareness of officers before assigning firearms to them to curtail incidents of ‘accidental discharge`.

He said that inadequate health worker, poor funding, infrastructure deficit and management deficiencies had been some of the challenges inhibiting the force’s medical unit.

Arase noted that in order to tackle these challenges, it was expedient to develop a health policy for the force.

“The development of any policy document entails an inclusive approach with relevant stakeholders.

“You all have been invited here today to review the Draft Health Policy for the Nigeria Police Force,“he said.

On his part, the Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, promised the ministry’s assistance in the implementation of the policy.

“We will assist in the implementation, we will ensure it happens,“Adewole said.

He commended the police management for developing a health policy for its officers and their families.

In a remark, Dr Abdulmumini Ibrahim, Registrar, Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), said that the policy was long overdue.

He said that the council would help the police to build the capacity to handle the facility.

The Nigeria Police Medical Service was established in 1975 with the primary mandate of providing health care services to serving, retired, family members of the force and detainees.

  • Man O’ War recruits members

No fewer than 25 students have been recruited into the Man O’ War cadet at the University of Benin (UNIBEN). The recruitment was held for two days at a hill behind the institution’s Senior Staff Club known on the campus as ‘Mount Kilimanjaro’.

The exercise, which was coordinated by the club’s commandant, Emeka Nwaede, a 400-Level Medical Physiology student, lasted for six hours, with the recruits being taking through physical fitness, such as push-ups, rolling, high jumps, frog jump, endurance trek and mounting climbing.

This was followed by oral interview, where the recruits were assessed based on their intelligence quotient and academic records.

Emeka said: “The oral interview was basically to test the IQ of the students to know how broad their thinking capacity is. We also need to know their and academic performance, because we would not recruit students with poor academic records.”

While observing that there no casualty injury during the exercise, Emeka said some of the recruits, who developed fear for altitude adapted to the task.

“Having gone through this rigorous screening exercise, I officially welcome you to the club. You must be disciplined. Do not see the club as an outfit of intimidation against your fellow students. You must be good ambassadors. Anyone who defaults our rules will be penalized,” Emeka said.

A recruit, Chinedu Ejechi, a 200-Level Philosophy and Religion student, said he was happy about the success of the exercise. He promised to use his experience to help make the campus peaceful.

  • Army to fight Boko Haram with Civilian JTF recruits

Army to fight Boko Haram with Civilian JTF recruits

Troops deployed in bid to rescue minister’s relations

The Presidency is weighing options on how to increase the number of troops in the troubled Northeast.

A top military source, who spoke in confidence, said the depletion of troops nationwide, as a result of security challenges in at least 30 states, made the measure necessary.

He said it had become “urgent to beef up troops” in the Northeast.

The highly-placed source said: “From all indications, the Presidency may soon consider recruiting qualified, competent, courageous members of Civilian JTF into special security forces to be well-trained and equipped in the war on terror.

“Rather than arming the volunteer groups who are proving their worth and staking their lives to protect their communities with mere sticks and knives against Boko Haram terrorists, the system is considering proposals from security and military experts who believe recruitment of qualified youths may be the best option against creating militias that could be problems in future.

“Background checks, antecedents and past exploits and contributions of individual volunteers will be taken into consideration to avoid recruiting those with evil and criminal intents into the specialised forces.

“Other considerations include the fact that such local volunteers understand the terrain of such environment and politics of the insurgents.”

Another source said: “It has also been discovered  that if members of the CJTF are adequately trained and equipped, they could dare the terrorists in the held communities.

“They had in the past with bare hands arrested Boko Haram kingpins and handed them over to security personnel.

“A lot of members of the CJTF have been killed by terrorists because they are not armed and trained in counter-insurgency operations.”

In videos released by Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau, he had continued to warn CJTF against supporting the military. He had also shown the execution or slaughtering of captured CJTF members in his videos.

“Many have also called for the recruitment of courageous and qualified young Nigerians who are passionate to build career in the military rather than the jobless ones who join the military only to engage in acts of indiscipline, desertion and mutiny at a critical period of national life,” the source said.

The recruits are to be trained in the use of arms and basic ethics of rules of engagement, among others, before deployment.

Another source spokes of how troops had been depleted, no thanks to increasing security challenges nationwide. “It takes three to four years to train well-qualified troops. The nation cannot afford the luxury of waiting for some years to train troops while leaving security challenges unattended to,” the source said.

Troopswere yesterday deployed in the Adamawa State home town of Youth Development Minister Mr. Boni Haruna to rescue his trapped relations and others at the mercy of the Boko Haram.

The insurgents have in the last 24 hours seized the minister’s Kuburshosho hometown in Michika Local Government Area.

Besides vandalising the minister’s house, the rampaging insurgents also looted many homes and shops before setting them ablaze.

It was gathered that while some of the indigenes escaped, many got trapped.

Among those trapped are relatives of the minister who could not be located as at press time.

A source said: “Troops have been deployed in Kuburshosho to rescue the relatives of the Minister and other indigenes of the town.

“The troops were ordered to flush out the insurgents from the area and Garta, which was also overrun by the sect.

“So, the battle to liberate the minister’s town is ongoing.”

Responding to a question, the source added: “The sect made spirited efforts to capture Kamale but River Kamale which overflew its bank, naturally repelled them.”

More than 10,000 people from Michika Local Government Area are presently seeking refuge in Yola.
