    Commission recruits 170 persons with disability

    The Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC) has recruited 170 persons living with disability into the federal civil service this year.

    Its chairperson, Mrs Joan Ayo who spoke while receiving the new Head of Service of the Federation (HoSF), Mr. Danladi Kifasi to her office, said the disabled persons have been given appointments, adding that a place must be created for them to utilise their skills.

    Ayo said: “They have been given appointments; some of them regrettably cannot fit into the system. But we try to ensure that anyone given a job has something to do otherwise it will be frustrating to the commission and the affected person.”

    She assured Kifasi that the commission will continue to work harmoniously with HoSF to ensure that government’s policies are implemented successfully and that productivity is enhanced, stressing that only qualified candidates will be recruited into the civil service.

    Kifasi stressed the need for collaboration between his office and the Civil Service Commission, adding that civil service rules would soon be reviewed and that training would be given priority to boost the capacity of the workers.

    Lobi Stars utility player, Felix Osia, has backed the new players at the club to boost their quest for honours this term.

    No fewer than 12 players joined the club during the mid-season break and club gaffer, Evans Ogenyi, deployed six on the resumption of the second round against Heartland.

    Interestingly, former Nembe City midfielder, Joseph Essien, made a goalscoring debut on match day.

    “The new players come with maturity expected for the top flight. It’s a good move which will benefit the club and we are working hard,” he said to supersport.com.

    Osia has maintained a positive impact following his switch to Lobi this term.

    Another recruit from Nembe City, Samson Gbadebo, is expected to continue his partnership with Osia in central defence.

    INEC recruits 10,432

    About 10,432 adhoc staff have been recruited by the Independent National Electoral Commission for the conduct of the August 9 Osun State governorship election.

    Addressing reporters at a press conference at the INEC Secretariat along the Gbongan Road yesterday, the Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Mr. Olusegun Agbaje, disclosed that the adhoc staff, who are presiding officers, assistant presiding officers, supervisory presiding officers, local government collation officers and returning officers, were youth corps members drawn from Osun, Kwara, Oyo, Ondo and Kogi states.

    He assured people of early delivery of election materials to all the 3,379 voting points across the state.

    He reiterated the readiness of the INEC to conduct a free, fair and credible election, saying the exercise would meet the aspirations of all and sundry.

  • Army recruits 9,000 soldiers

    The Nigerian Army has begun the recruitment of 9,000 soldiers to strengthen its personnel to effectively tackle security challenges in the country.

    The Chief of Army Staff, Gen. Azubike Ihejirika, spoke yesterday on the exercise at the opening of a week-long military-civil society relations workshop in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

    The Army chief, who was represented by the Chief of Army Standards and Evaluation, Maj.-Gen. John Enwusiha, said the Army would collaborate with the civil society in the war against insurgency.

    He noted that an improved relation with the civil society would enable the Army to access ideas and useful information from civilians.

    According to him, it will also enable the civil society to understand the inner workings of the military.

    Ihejirika said: “…The Nigerian Army has begun massive recruitment of soldiers to cushion the effect of the current security challenges. I have begun the recruitment of 9,000 soldiers in our various training institutions. This is with a view to meeting the desired end in terms of personnel, equipment, morale and training.

    “Let me also seize this opportunity to inform you that the Nigerian Army has intensified its effort towards re-training of its personnel to meet up the Security Challenges.”

    The Director, Civil-Military Affairs of the Army, Maj.-Gen. Bola Koleoso, said the initiative provided another opportunity for the army and civilians to rub minds.

  • Fed Govt recruits 10,000 health workers

    As part of efforts to bridge the gap in the country’s health sector, the Federal Government has recruited, trained and deployed over 10,000 Primary Health Care workers nationwide.

    The workers, according to the Executive Director, National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Dr. Ado Muhammad, comprise midwives, nurses, community health workers and village health workers.

    Recently, the World Health Organisation (WHO) revealed that 36 countries in Africa are in need of 820,000 doctors, nurses and midwives.

    WHO also identified a minimum threshold of health workforce density of 2.3 physicians, nurses and midwives per 1000 population.

    Consequently, to bridge the gap, Federal Government said it was working with stakeholders to see how to reduce the time spent in training health workers.

    Speaking at the Second National Conference on Human Resources for Health in Abuja on Monday, WHO representatives in Nigeria, Dr. Rui Vaz, said the organisation identified a minimum threshold of health workforce density of 2.3 physicians, nurses and midwives per 1000 population.

    But yesterday, Dr. Muhammad said about 10,000 health workers have been deployed to over 2,000 health facilities spread in 459 local government areas nationwide under the health human resource intervention.

    He said this was part of the measures to bridge the human resource gap in the health sector.

    Dr. Ado made the disclosure when signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) focusing on reproductive health component of life saving commodities of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

    According to a statement issued by NPHCDA’s Assistant Director, Public Relation, Mr. Saadu Salahu, the agency boss disclosed that a new strategy known as conditional cash transfer; an innovation built into the SURE P MCH, which was designed to increase demand for PHC services, has been yielding impressive results.

    He noted with delight that the conditional cash transfer has more than tripled demands for PHC services in over 2,500 PHC facilities where the MSS and SURE P MCH are being implemented.

    He also stressed that President Goodluck Jonathan as Co-chair of the UN global initiative on commission for life saving commodities and chief advocate of Nigeria’s saving one million lives initiatives is committed to the attainment of Millennium Development Goals.

  • Jigawa recruits health inspectors

    The Jigawa State government has recruited 500 sanitation workers to enhance environmental health services in the state, Alhaji Isa Nasarawa, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Environment, has said.

    Nasarawa said this at the inauguration of a three-day capacity building training workshop organised by the Environmental Health Officers Registration Council of Nigeria (EHORECON), in Dutse.

    He said that the workers were recruited under the newly established State Environmental Protection Agency (JISEPA).

    He added that the state government had also set up Rural Water and Sanitation Desk Offices in the 27 local government areas of the state.

    He said the action would help to streamline campaign activities and enhance access to potable water at the grassroots.

    The secretary explained that the measure was part of a comprehensive framework adopted by the state to achieve sustainable growth in the environment, water and health sectors.

    He said that the state government had made adequate provisions in the 2013 budget to fast track the implementation of water, sanitation and environmental health programmes.

    “This is part of a giant programme to control desertification, erosion and environmental health issues,” he said.

    In his remarks, the Registrar of the council, Mr Augustine Ebisike, said the training was part of its continuing education programme designed to expose the participants to the modern environmental health techniques.

    Ebisike also called for adequate funding of environmental health services to reduce health challenges in the country.

    The registrar praised the state government for the recruitment of sanitation workers and initiating other environment protection programmes.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that more than 100 participants attended the workshop.
