    Rector tasks students on discipline

    Two students of the Redeemer’s College of Technology and Management (RECTEM) Mowe, Ogun State, have been expelled  for a breach of the institution’s rules and regulations. The students were dismissed from the school for truancy and indiscipline.

    Rector of the College, Dr Stella Mofunanya who spoke at the 6th matriculation of the institution, said the college has zero tolerance for cultism, hooliganism, corruption and other forms of misconduct. No fewer than 303 students made up of National Diploma and Higher National Diploma programmes from four schools were matriculated on Tuesday.

    She urged the newly matriculated students to be disciplined and work according to the rules as the institution would not condone indiscipline nor lower its standards. She noted that as champions, it is very important they conclude the journey they are starting successfully and triumphantly.

    Mofunanya urged the students to resist the temptation to commit examination malpractices and fraud, adding that any student that enters the college must know that the school is a faith-based institution and therefore must abide by its  rules and regulations.  

    On meeting the requirements to run the HND Programme barely six years of the college existence,  Mofunanya said she is excited that the institution could make it this fast because there are many older higher institutions that have not got their full accreditation for such programmes. 

    “We are doing the right thing and our father in the Lord has been supportive. It is the effort of the mission and God’s grace,” she added.

    Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia has congratulated Rector of St. Thomas Aquinas Major Seminary, Makurdi, Rev.  Simeon Iber, on his 60th birthday.

    He hailed him for his commitment and dedication to spreading the word of God, acknowledging he was instrumental in assisting him during his years of study in United States.

    Speaking at the mass to mark the rector’s 36th priestly ordination, birthday, and book presentation, the governor said his administration would support farmers and increase food production.

    He noted that the Federal Government was putting measures in place to alleviate the hardship citizens are going through.

    Alia said governments have taken cognisance of the influx of herders in local governments, particularly Agatu, Apa, Logo, Gwer West, Guma, Makurdi, Kwande, and Ukum, saying meetings have been held and the result will soon manifest.

    A statement by his Principal Special Assistant on Print Media,  Donald Kumun, said  the governor said President Bola Tinubu and 36 governors have deliberated on ways of solving security challenges.

    He acknowledged that the state and the country were passing through challenging times, urging Nigerians  to remain resilient and keep praying for better days.

    Former governor and chief launcher, Senator Gabriel Suswam, extolled the rector’s virtues and called on the people to support literature and encourage the youth to concentrate on reading books. Bishop of Catholic Diocese of Lafia, Rev. David Ajang, recounted his relationship with the celebrator  and prayed God to grant him many years in  life.

    Abia Poly Rector hails Otti for regular subvention

    The acting rector, Abia State Polytechnic, Aba, Engr. Dr. Chidinma Ndukwe has thanked the governor of the state, Dr. Alex Otti for regularly releasing the institution’s monthly subvention since his assumption of office as the governor of the state.

    The acting rector, who was speaking at the institution’s monthly prayer meeting, also charged the staff to show more commitment to duties.

    She used the opportunity to inform the staff of the decision of the management to hold a compulsory general staff seminar for all categories of staff of the polytechnic coming up this month (February).

    The acting rector, who also informed the staff and students of the successful accreditation of the Engineering Department, expressed the hope that other departments would scale through their own accreditation coming up subsequently.

    According to the rector, the management in its commitment to ensure that the retired staff were not out in the new wind of change in the polytechnic and state, disclosed that they recently paid their retired staff their December pensions.

    Earlier in a sermon, Pastor Humphrey Okoroafor, speaking on the topic, Ushering In A New Dawn took his texts from Isaiah 43:18-19, 2nd Kings 7, Mathew 15:8, 9:16-17 and Luke 13:5b, urged staff to be change agents in their various offices to fit into the wind of change in the state and the polytechnic in particular.

    Rector to students: work hard, exhibit good conduct

    The Rector of TimeOn KAIROS Polytechnic, Lagos,  Prof. Olufemi Oludimu, has charged students to work hard, shun anti-social activities and be morally upright.

    He spoke at  the third matriculation/ first convocation and sixth open house events of the institution held on  the school’s premises in Lagos.

    Oludimu said the institution is a place for character building, adding  that when students focus on their studies they would be  successful.

    “I am charging you to abide by all the rules and regulations and be committed to your studies. I want you to attend lectures regularly because 70 percent of lecture attendance is required for you to qualify for exams. Also continuous assessment is a requirement for exams.

    “Cultism and examination malpractices are prohibited in this institution. Offenders will be summarily dismissed. Do not succumb to any pressure to join illegal or anti-social activities and groups.

    “In this polytechnic, we encourage students to dress properly and those who default will be sanctioned. You must duly earn our certificate through hard work. Our school is well-equipped with both physical and e-library to aid your learning.

    “Also note that you may be graduating from this noble institution with two certificates – your diploma academic certificate and entrepreneurial skill acquisition certificate,” he said.

    On her part, Dr Adebusola Okedele, the guest speaker, charged  new students to be focused and aspire for greater things.

    “I want to charge you to be focused on the primary reason you are here. Avoid bad friends because they will ruin your aspirations.

    “Mind your business and be ready to give your all to your studies. It is only through hard work, giving your time, and being dedicated to why you are here that you will achieve success. If you will make a distinction, it would start with your first assessment test here; so be serious with what you do,” she said.

    Meanwhile, at the convocation session, the founding President and Chief Executive Officer of the institution, Dr Titus Kolawole Oyeyemi tasked the graduates to make the best of their studies to impact the world.

    He said the graduation marked a new chapter in their lives, urging them  to face the outside world with calmness but with a mindset of a winner. He enjoined them to be good ambassadors of the school.

    “This day is marking a new beginning in your life. I want you to be dynamic, ambitious, and determined. I want you to develop strong characters and never be intimidated by anyone. Life is unpredictably challenging but as young men and women, you have to be daring. As young people, when life dares you, your response should be ‘I dare you too’.

    “As I often tell students at all levels, it is education that changes your name. But education is difficult and schooling is tedious. So many things can change your life but one thing that can change your life for the better is education”.

    “Think about it; it’s by education that you picked and added some appellate or accolades to your given names such as accountant, engineer, doctor, and even professor, to name a few. All these and many more are achieved by and through schooling, ” he said.

    Rector advocates technology to curb unemployment

    The Rector Federal Polytechnic Ayede, Oyo State, Dr. Taofeek Abdul-Hameed, has advocated use of technology to boost the nation’s economy, saying this would curb the menace of unemployment in Nigeria.

    He urged government at all levels to leverage on technology so as to solve unemployment which according to him has given birth to other national and societal challenges.

    Speaking while delivering the 29th convocation lecture of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin with the theme: “Technological Innovation: A Panacea to Emerging National Challenges”, Abdul-Hameed noted that high rate of violence across the nation is mostly caused by unemployed youth.

    He called on governments to channel the education system towards marketable skills like technology and vocational education with a view to advance it technologically.

    According to him : “Violence is rising in Nigeria due to young unemployment. Nigeria’s population topped 200 million in 2018. Over 50% of the population is young, aged between 15 and 34.

    “Unfortunately, the unemployment rate rises with the youth population. Indeed, 11.1 million young people were unemployed in 2012. This indicates extreme poverty in the region. This may encourage illegal activities.

    “Citizens must learn and employ the required skills for a nation to survive and prosper economically, the claim is that a country’s educational system should teach pupils marketable skills, such as technology, and vocational education, to advance technologically.

    “Technology and vocational education are essential in light of the country’s economic woes. Technology and vocational education help generate competent leaders in construction, electrical and electronics, mechanical/automobile, home economics, and agriculture as well as related industries.

    “The disciplines include every culture’s basic needs, including clothing, food, shelter and health.”

    He advised leaders to invest heavily in human capital development, noting that nations with strong intellectual resources enjoy the fastest economic development and scientific as well as technological advances.

    “Knowledge acquisition is vital to solving many social and environmental issues and has significant economic rewards.”

  • Rector to students: be studious

    The Acting Rector, Abia State Polytechnic, Aba, Prof Ezionye Eboh, has charged fresh and old students of the institution to work hard to excel in their academic pursuits.

    Eboh, who spoke at Pavilion of the institution during the 25th matriculation of the Aba-based school, assured the students of the management’s readiness to provide them with the necessary support for their academic success.

    The Rector also said efforts were being made by the management for academic activities to take off at the Osisioma permanent site of the institution from the 2019/2020 academic session.

    He said the management of the institution was working assiduously to ensure that all National and Higher National Diploma programmes of the institutions would scale the accreditation hurdle when the National the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) accreditation team visits between May and June.

    Expressing pain that the institution had not organised any convocation for decades, Eboh said the management of the institution had resolved to organise one in the second semester of the current session.

    The Rector who also informed the audience that the school was making effort to attract local and international collaboration, said the polytechnic had entered an agreement with the ICT University, Louisiana, USA which attracted donation of ICT equipment and other related materials worth thousands of US Dollars. Eboh also thanked the National Communication Commission (NCC) for providing the school with hundreds of laptops and tablets.

    He also said the polytechnic had provided free 24hour internet service which would help students with their assignments and research on campus.

    Eboh thanked the visitor of the school and Governor of the state, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu for his support.

    Some of the students told this reporter they would take their studies seriously, promising to abide by the rules and regulations guiding their conduct on campus.

  • College of Insurance will alleviate human capital challenge, says Rector

    The College of Insurance and Financial Management will continue to alleviate human capital challenges of the Nigerian insurance industry. Its Rector, Dr. Yeside Oyetayo, who made this known at this year’s Graduation Ceremony of the College on Km 40 Lagos Ibadan Expressway, Asese Ogun State, said the college was graduating four students in the Diploma in insurance programme, who have  weathered the academic storm and fulfilled the requirements for the award of the Diploma.

    She said though the number of graduands was small, it was an evidence of the fact that they have in no way compromised on the standards for which the college is known.

    She said the college has however, intensified efforts that the number of enrollments is increased in the next academic session to ensure that it has a larger number of students that will graduate next year.

    She said the vision of the school is to become the College of Insurance of choice in Africa, providing insurance training of global standards to meet the industry’s present and future requirements.

    She said the College will be offering an international certificate in Inclusive Insurance in support of the financial inclusion policy of the government in the new year. The courses, according to her, will be offered in collaboration with the Impact Insurance Facility of the International Labour Organisation (ILO).

    She admonished graduands not to forget the ideals inculcated in them while at the College, emphasising the need for hard work and good morals.

    Chairman, Governing Board, Mr Sakiru Oyefeso, on his part, said the construction of the College multi-purpose hall would commence in the first quarter of next year.

    He lauded the Governing Council of the Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria (CIIN) and the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) for their continuous support towards the overall development of the College.

  • Rector urges workers to check health status

    •’Exercise to keep fit’

    The Rector of the Lagos State Polytechnic, Mr. Samuel Sogunro, yesterday advised workers of the institution to always exercise in order to keep fit and remain healthy.

    The rector, who spoke during a walk tagged “Walk for Life”, also urged the workers to inculcate the habit of exercising and living a healthy life.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the exercise took place on the school premises before the beginning of work.

    Sogunro said many workers did not create time to exercise because of their busy schedule, thereby affecting their health.

    He said no progress could be achieved where “a worker usually goes on sick leave.”

    “There is need for employers and employees in institutions of higher learning and all stakeholders to exercise and check their health status regularly.

    “Walking is a great way to improve or maintain your overall health. Just 30 minutes’ walk every day can increase cardiovascular fitness, strengthen bones, reduce excess body fat and boost muscle power and endurance.

    “Unlike other forms of exercise, walking is free and doesn’t require any special equipment or training.

    “Physical activity does not have to be vigorous or done for a long period in order to improve your health,” the rector said.

     

     

  • Kogi Poly Rector resigns as deputy steps in

    The Rector of the Kogi State Polytechnic (KSP), Mr Isah Mohammed has finally resigned his appointment.

    This development was confirmed by the Public Relations Officer of the school, Luke Tijani in a press statement on Friday.

    “Mr Mohammed has officially handed over to his Deputy, Dr Attah Haruna. As I’m talking to you now, plans are already in place to appoint a substantive Rector by the visitor of the school. But for now, Dr Haruna will be on acting capacity before a substantive Rector is appointed.”

    The former Rector whose tenure expires on Friday, 7th September 2018, but seeking for a renewal of his tenure by the visitor of the Polytechnic did not also get the blessings of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic (ASUP) and Non-Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic (NASUP) which earlier in the past accused him of anti-labour activities in the institution.

    Under his watch, according to some students in the institution who begged for anonymity,students were forced to look for accommodation elsewhere in the town since the school could not provide any in the last two years.

    They alleged that the academic performance in the school had dropped drastically compared to several years ago.

    However, all efforts by this reporter to reach the former Rector proved abortive.

  • Kwara Aviation College gets Rector

    The Kwara State International College of Aviation has gotten a new Rector; he is Engr. Benedict Adeyileka, and he replaces Abdul Abdulkarim.

    Commissioner for Works and Transport Aro Yahaya, who introduced Adeyileka to reporters in Ilorin yesterday, said: “As the supervisory ministry for the college, we took the step to reposition the college for better productivity, performance and career growth.

    “It is also aimed at ensuring resourceful training for prospective pilots and aviation professionals. By the grace of God, he will show his professional calling and experience for better positioning of the college.”

    The commissioner reiterated that the certificate of the college is still intact, saying “I assure you all that the certificate for the college is still intact. But don’t forget that when there is an audit assignment some issues could crop up.”

    Adeyileka said: “We need to understand the difference between suspension and revocation of a certificate. To the best of my knowledge, there are issues which should be addressed in the college and we have started addressing that. We are planning to visit the NCAA today and have a discussion with them.

    “The issues are not things we need to lose sleep over. It is when we have a suspension that is not solvable that we will start to panic.”
