  • Dress indecently risk expulsion, Rector tells students

Any student of the Polytechnic, Ibadan who is found guilty of violating the institution’s dress code  would either be suspended or totally expelled from the institution, the Rector Prof Olatunde Fawole has warned.

Fawole made this submission during the 2016/2017 matriculation for newly admitted National Diploma and Higher National Diploma students of the institution, held at the new Lecture theatre of the institution.

He noted that a Task Force has been inaugurated to enforce the dress code law

Fawole said of the 65,633 candidates that applied for both ND and HND courses in the institution, only 5,790 students were picked.

He said management has set a standard dress code that is available in the student’s handbook, hence any student found guilty of violating the rules would face the music.

Fawole said: “The Polytechnic Ibadan posses a unique image which we cherish dearly and that continues to rub on its products. This image has not come by chance but was earned through dint of hard work, dedication to duty and a strong sense of discipline among staff and students. To this end, the institution would not compromise its hard-earned impressive image for any damaging misconduct from any student.

“It is instructive to let you know that any student who flouts this dress code shall be warned at the first instance, while subsequent defiance could result in suspension for one or two semesters or outright expulsion, as the case may be.

“A task force has been inaugurated to conduct periodic search into lecture theatres, hostels, entrance gates etc to fish out any deviant student. Your morality must not be questionable as The Polytechnic Ibadan would not award its diploma certificate to any student that lacks moral. We believe that education without morals is null. And void.

Thereafter, he assured the students that all programmes in the institution have been accredited by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), as well as other relevant professional bodies.

  • Your success depends on your character, Rector tells freshers

The Rector of Benson Idahosa School of Basic and Applied Studies, Dr Mark Ighile, has told fresh students to be of good conducts.

Ighile spoke during the freshers’ matriculation held at the School of Postgraduate Studies Hall. The students were admitted for diploma in professional programmes being offered by the school.

The rector told them that their success depended on their attitude and frame of mind,  adding that only students with right frame of mind would excel. He urged the freshers to focus on their studies and have clear pictures of what they intended to achieve.

“Those who are focused will end up becoming subjects of focus,” he said.

Speaking on the theme: Winning the race before you, the rector advised the students to use the opportunity of their admission to strive for excellence. He said management would ensure strict compliance of the school regulations. He admonished the freshers to abide by the oath they took and show good behaviour.

According to him, the essence of the matriculation is to provide an opportunity to fresh students to learn the do’s and don’ts of the school.

Ighile assured parents of the school’s readiness to train their children with the state-of- the art facilities and modern knowledge.

While administering the oath on the students, Registrar, Mr Enoma Aruevbose, advised them to be obedient and shun unruly behaviour.

  • Rector warns students against participating in MMM, other Ponzi schemes

Matriculating students of the Federal Polytechnic, Bida have been warned against participating on Ponzi schemes, especially the MMM.
The Rector, Dr. Abubakar Dzukogi gave the warning during the 2016/2017 matriculation ceremony held at Bagudu Waziri auditorium in Bida.

” It is high time Nigerian students redefined their values. The much talked about participation in MMM and similar outfits, buying expensive handsets, dressing indecently and living unbridled lives should be put to a halt.

” We need to have a value system based on raising hope for our future and the nation,” Dzukogi said.

The Rector disclosed that 200 students were withdrawn for poor academic performance during the last academic session, while 15 others were rusticated due to examination malpractices, fighting and engaging in other social physical vices.

“We still remain strict as we try to maintain our standard. We have tried to maintain our standard over the years and we will not stop maintaining it. Any student found wanting will be sent home.”

The Rector added that the future of Nigeria depends largely on the ability of young people to cope with challenges in the pursuit of their goals and aspirations.

He urged the new students to take their studies serious and strive towards balancing their spiritual lives with academics for meaningful living advising them to shun any form of vices or anti-social activities such as cultism, examination malpractices and drug abuse.

“It should be noted that there will be zero tolerance for all forms of misconducts as offenders will be appropriately sanctioned.”
Three thousand and five hundred students matriculated for the 2016/2017 academic session out of which 1,500 were for National Diploma and 2,000 were for Higher National Diploma.

  • Rector begs striking workers to resume work

Acting Rector of the Federal Polytechnic Auchi, Dr. Jafaru Braimoh, has appealed to the striking workers of the polytechnic to return to work in the best interest of the institution.

All unions in the polytechnic including the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic (ASUP), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnics (SSANIP) and Non-Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (NASUP) had on February 6 embarked on an indefinite strike.

The unions embarked on the strike over failure of institution’s management to enroll staff of the institution on “CONTISS 15 Migration Salary Structure for Level 11 downward, non-payment of promotion arrears and alleged indebtedness of N1.8billion owed the unions.

Braimoh made the plea at a press briefing in Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area on the industrial crisis rocking the polytechnic.

  • Rector seeks police post in Bida Poly

Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, Bida in Niger State, Dr. Abubakar Dzukogi, has appealed to the police  to construct a police post in the institution to ensure the security of lives and property.

Dzukogi made the appeal when the Commissioner of Police, Zubairu Muazu, visited the institution.

The Rector said with the growing population of students on campus, which is about 15, 000, there was the need for the construction of a befitting police station for the school.

“Typically, like other institutions, we have cases like cultism. Once a while,  we have cases of burglaries taking place and cases of phone snatching. Our security unit has been up and doing but we cannot do this work alone without the assistance of the police,” he added.

Dzukogi said the management of the institution had already identified a suitable plot of land for the project.

“We have identified a land for the police station and our only appeal now is for the police to assist us in the construction of a new police station. Where we are managing now, considering our position in the state and considering the number of people we have, we deserve a more befitting police station,” he explained.

The rector called for deployment of more policemen in the institution to boost security.

“I would like to appeal to the commissioner of police to post more men to us because of the challenges we are facing,” he said.

Responding, Muazu assured the Rector that the force would treat his requests with despatch.

On Dzukogi’s first request, the Commissioner said:  “I assure the Rector that I will take it up with the inspector general of police (IGP).’’

On deployment of more policemen to the institution, Muazu lamented that the issue of manpower was a major problem confronting the force. He said the force had not had any recruitment for a very long time.

The Police chief assured the Rector of his support to the polytechnic.

  • Rector, ASUP trade tackles at Bida Poly

Rector, ASUP trade tackles at Bida Poly

The Federal Polytechnic, Bida, chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) is up in arms against the management of the institution over allegations of misappropriation and other malpractices.
The Rector, Abubakar Abdul Dzukogi, has called the union’s bluff, claiming its members were afraid of verification, report JUSTINA ASISHANA (Minna) and ADENIKE ADEYEMO (ND II, Mass Communication, Bida Poly).

The management of the Federal Polytechnic, Bida, in Niger State and the institution’s chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) are locked in a tussle over allegations of misappropriation of funds, suspension of some negotiated allowances as well as alleged underhand dealings.

Accusations and counter accusations have been flying between the two groups.

On the one hand, ASUP accused the Rector, Abubakar Abdul Dzukogi, of spending a huge amount of money on maintaining his car and sponsoring a faceless group.

The Union claimed Dzukogi changed the windscreen of his Peugeot car with N1 million, which they said trippled the price in the market.

Defending himself, Dzukogi said the windscreen did not cost that amount, adding that the allegation was baseless.

He challenged anyone with proof that he changed the windscreen with N1 million to come forward with it. He also said he had receipts for the repairs and the purchase of the vehicle which cost N11 million.

“The receipt is there; the windscreen and workmanship cost less than N100,0000.  The receipt for the purchase is available.  However, a committee has been set up to address the issue. I am a man of integrity. I have held various positions before becoming the Rector. I will never do anything to soil my name,” he said.

Dzukogi said the whole outcry started when the management ordered that all workers should submit their original credentials for verification.  He claimed that the allegations were part of the antics of ASUP to disrupt the verification process because most of them were unqualified and feared the exercise may affect them.

“The union leadership has not been comfortable with the ongoing verification exercise by the management to ascertain the qualifications of staff. The management has motivated members of staff but everyone must work for his salary,” he said.

However, ASUP Chairman, Comrade Umar Saganuwan, said its members were not afraid of the exercise, alleging that the Rector only said that to cover his track.

He said the union’s grouse had to do with unlawful and arbitrary suspension of some negotiated allowances, which it demanded should be reinstated immediately.  He alleged that the Rector sponsored a group to harass ASUP members because of their demands.

“Our stance incidentally led to reprisals of ignoble antics by management to undermine the unity of members and discredit the leadership of the union; some of which involved the sponsorship of a faceless group called ‘Integrity group,’” he said.

He claimed the Integrity Group was antagonising the union Leadership and disrupting its activities.

Efforts by The Nation to meet some of the members of the “Integrity Group” proved abortive as they were not ready to speak to our correspondent.

However, the students have defended the Rector, saying he is not guilty of the accusations being levelled against him. They claim ASUP was looking for an opportunity to embark on strike.

Students’ Union President, Comrade Adeyeye Olugbenga, who is also President, National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS), said the Rector was not guilty of the accusations.

He added that certain allowances were normally given to workers before the recession started, but because of the economic downturn, they were being paid half of their allowances.

He added that workers involved in the Directorate Continuing Education programme used to be paid some allowances at the end of the session. But due to scarcity of funds, he said the payments were been delayed, which must have fuelled the accusations against the Rector.

However a source at the management level said the Institution paid some allowances last week to some workers while the remaining outstanding allowances would soon be paid.

The source claimed that the whole issue started based of mistrust between the management and the ASUP, adding that moves are being made to settle the impasse.

As at the time of filing this report, the management was holding a closed door meeting with ASUP leaders to resolve the crisis.

ASUP Chairman told The Nation that he would reveal what transpired afterwards.

He said both parties were trying to find a common ground to resolve the issue.

He however said the Union is insistent on the payment of backlog of all allowances  while members await the report of the committee set up to probe the allegations of financial mismanagement.

The two unions said its members would start the strike on Monday if the college management failed to refund the money deducted from July salary.

According to report on  Thursday, the college staffers  were outside in groups discussing the indefinite strike, while the students watch them and some left for home due to the present situation.

The three staff unions held a joint congress on Thursday at YABATECH Sports Complex and the chairmen read out their demands and disclosed  that the Rector, Dr. Margaret Ladipo could not produce any document to back-up  the reduction in staff salary,july..

The ASUP chairman, Prince Aromolaran Adeyemi said the decision to embark on the strike was taken at the congress held in July. He also disclosed that the industrial action has the support of national body.

Aromolaran said when the unions kicked against the college management action, they were invited to a meeting by the rector and she could not produce any document mandating her to deduct staff allowances.

He stressed that with the strike, his members would not be part of the forthcoming part time and full time exam stating “Already our members have withdrawn services starting from Thursday until the college management refund the illegal deduction”.

The SSANIP chairman, Mr. Omopariola Olorunmbe said the body has issued a 24-hours ultimatum to the college management to refund the illicit deduction and that if by Friday, the rector did not comply, his members would join the strike on Monday.

Mr. Olatunbosun Illesanmi , NASU chairman also issued an ultimatum to the management and directed his members to stop work if by tomorrow the refund has not been effected.

The YABATECH Public Relations Officer, Mr. Charles Oni was not on seat and his office was locked while efforts to reach him on his two mobile lines proved abortive as it was switched off.
