    Remo Stars inch closer to NPFL title with win over Shooting Stars

    Remo Stars went a step closer to clinching their first ever Nigeria Premier Football League title after they pipped Shooting Stars 1-0 in Ibadan yesterday to maintain their seven points gap at the top.

    But Rivers United relied on late goal to beat Sunshine Stars in Port Harcourt while Heartland could not score against stubborn Kwara United as 2024-25 NPFL Matchday 34 games were played out  last weekend.

    In Ibadan, Remo Stars’ Alex Oyowah’s first half strike settled the contest between the Sky Blue Stars and Shooting Stars at the Lekan Salami Stadium. Daniel Ogunmodede’s men thus completed a double over the Oluyole Warriors whom they had earlier beaten in Ikenne. They remain atop the topflight with 65 points and seven points clear of Rivers United who also won 1-0 at home to Sunshine Stars. Abba Suleiman with the lone goal in the 84th minute.

    The Pride of Rivers stay second with 58 points and most importantly five points ahead of third and fourth placed Ikorodu City and Abia Warriors who both have 53 points but are separated by goals difference.

    A 10-man Bayelsa United held Niger Tornadoes to a 1-1 draw in Kaduna with Rabiu Muhammad bagging the equalising goal in the 79th minute. Ikon Allah Boys had shot into the lead through Sunday Williams’ penalty kick in the 38th minute.

    El Kanemi Warriors could not get the better of Ikorodu City in Maiduguri following a 1-1 draw while wasteful Heartland FC were held to a goalless draw by Kwara United in Owerri.

    In Jos, Plateau United heaped more misery on Akwa United after they pipped the Promise Keepers 1-0 through Vincent Temitope’s 23rd minute effort.

    Bendel Insurance has to come back from a goal down before playing a 1-1 draw at home to Nasarawa United while Enyimba, Rangers and Katsina United also won on Saturday against Kano Pillars, Lobi Stars and Abia Warriors in that order.

    Remo Stars have opened a six-point  gap between them and second spot Rivers United  after they came back from 2-0 to draw 2-2 against Lobi Stars at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu, yesterday in a rescheduled NPFL game.

    Johnmark Aule opened the scores for the Pride of Benue in the 35th  minute before Onyekachi Okafor netted the second from the penalty spot in the 42nd xrb minute. It was his third goal of the season for Lobi since he joined the club mid season.

    Remo Stars came into the second half completely changed and got their goals through Haruna Hadi and Joseph Abah in the 56th  and 70th  minute .

    Remo Stars now have 61 points from 32 games to maintain  their stronghold continue on  the table ahead of Rivers United, who are second with 55 points.

    But the Sky Blue Stars may extend their lead at the top with a home game against Katsina United this weekend while Rivers United are away to Abia Warriors in Umuahia. Kano Pillars will try to heap more misery on Lobi Stars when they visit Kano also this weekend.

    NPFL: Advantage Remo Stars as Rivers United stumble in Yenagoa

    Remo Stars will be the bigger beneficiaries if they beat Enyimba today at home in the continuation of the Nigeria Premier Football League Matchday 31 fixtures slated for Ikenne after  Bayelsa Unites edged  Rivers United 1-0 in Yenagoa

    The Pride of Rivers that are second on the log with 52 points were expected to secure a positive result against the Prosperity Boys yesterday to cut the gap on Remo Stars but they fell to the 19th  minute goal of Kehinde Malik.

    The Sky Blue Stars who hosts the Peoples Elephant today will go eight points clear even with a game at hand if they scoop the maximum points. A defeat in Ikenne may also put an end to the People’s Elephant’s continental chase through the league as they are currently ninth with 43 points.

    In other games, Sunshine Stars failed to dislodge a determined Heartland in a battle between two relegation-haunted teams. The game ended goalless at the Otunba Dipo Dina Stadium in Ijebu Ode.

    In Kano, Kano Pillars could not break through Bendel Insurance who got a goalless draw at the Sani Abacha Stadium, Kano. Insurance are in seventh spot with 45 points while Pillars are next in eighth spot with 44 points ahead of their visit to Owerri as guests of Heartland next weekend.

    While in Umuahia, Abia Warriors moved four points clear of fourth-placed Shooting Stars who play El Kanemi Warriors in Maiduguri today, with a 2-0 home win over Lobi Stars. Sunday Megwo and Antoine Ijoma goals in the 24th  and 90th  minutes did the magic as his restored them to the third spot with 50 points. They are only two points off second placed Rivers United.

    In Ilorin, Kwara United returned to winning ways after the loss to Akwa United last weekend with a laboured 1-0 victory over Nasarawa United.

    Abayomi Lawal’s goal in the 64th  minute was enough for the three points. They are now 10th on the log with 42 points while the Solid Miners are in 16th spot with 36 points.

    In the remaining fixtures, Rangers will trade tackles with Plateau United in Enugu while El Kanemi Warriors will face Shooting Stars.

    Akwa United will host Niger Tornadoes in Uyo also with Ikorodu City versus Katsina United put on hold.

    Remo Stars away game with Lobi Stars billed for Enugu this weekend has been postponed indefinitely at the instant of the Nigeria Premier Football League following letter written to the league body by the Management of the Sky Blue Stars.

    NationSport reliably gathered from those that should know that the league leaders wrote to the NPFL that their top two goalkeepers, Serge Obassa and Kayode Bankole,  have received invitation from the Benin Republic and Nigeria’s senior national team.

    It was said that Remo Stars said they are without first team goalkeeper at present with their third choice Goalie down with a wrist injury.

    The NPFL has already notified Lobi Stars and other relevant bodies that the game would now be fixed for another date when both Goalkeepers would have rejoined their team from their international adventure.

    Ikorodu City needed a stoppage time goal to force Enyimba to a 2-2 draw at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan  while Remo Stars dismantled Heartland 2-0 to move eight points clear on the table as  Nigeria Premier Football League Matchday 29 fixtures were decided over  weekend.

    In Lagos, Tosin Oyedokun’s 41st  minute goal put the Oga Boys 1-0 up at halftime but the People’s Elephant scored two quick goals through Mujeeb Odufeso and Joseph Atule in the 66th  and 73rd  minute. But Ayomide Cole saved the home side’s  blushes netting in the seventh minute of stoppage time.

    Enyimba have moved to the eighth spot with 42 points while Ikorodu City are fourth with 45 points.

    In Ikenne, Remo Stars claimed  an impressive  win after they defeated Heartland  2-0 through Olamilekan Adedayo and Samson Olasupo in the 31st  and 80th  minute.

    The Sky Blue Stars are first with 57 points while the Naze Millionaires slipped to the 16th  spot with 34 points.

    In Yenagoa, Bayelsa United pipped  Lobi Stars 1-0 through Wisdom Magbisa’s 55th  minute effort. They have moved to the 13th  spot with 37 points and are three points off the drop zone.

    In Uyo, Akwa United beat Shooting Stars 2-0 through Endurance Ebedebiri and Uche Sebastine’s goals to move to 31 points from 29 games.

    In Umuahia, Sunday Megwo’s 43rd  minute clincher was enough for Abia Warriors to romp past Bendel Insurance 1-0. They are fifth on the log with 44 points but Insurance are ninth with 41 points.

    In another game, Rivers United strengthened their stronghold on second spot following their 2-1 win at El Kanemi Warriors.

    Taofeek Otaniyi and Samson Obi’s goals in the 47th and 61st minutes put them 2-0 up before Rislanu Ismail’s 90th  minute strike reduced the deficit for the home team.

    The Pride of Rivers are second with 49 points while the Borno Army are 11th  with 40 points.

    Remo Stars may be hit with Goalkeeper crisis during the next international break with two of their top goalies Kayode Bankole and Adebiyi Obassa called up by Nigeria and Benin Republic ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers later this month.

    Nigeria’s manager, Eric Sekou Chelle named  Bankole in his final 23 man squad while his Benin Republic counterpart, Gernot Rohr has also named Obassa in his 25-man squad ahead of the upcoming  World Cup qualifiers in Africa.

    With Bankole making the final Super Eagles’ squad, Remo Stars may be without a goalkeeper in their Matchday 30 duel away to Lobi Stars next weekend.

    League front-runners Remo Stars will face Lobi Stars on 23 March, the same period as the World Cup qualifiers, in which both Nigeria and Benin have two matches.

    While Nigeria will be away to Rwanda on March 21, Benin will be away to Zimbabwe in South Africa.

    Two days later, Nigeria will be hosting Zimbabwe while Benin Republic, with Remo Stars’ first choice goalkeeper, will be at home in Cote d’Ivoire to South Africa.

    Rivers United are now eight points adrift of Remo Stars after they pipped Niger Tornadoes 1-0, while the NPFL leaders fell 2-1 at Bendel Insurance.

    Rivers United have 46 points from 28 games, while Remo Stars are on 54 points.

    Match winner today for Rivers United was Samson Obi, who hit target in the 83rd minute.

    Insurance climbed to seventh position in the standings on the back of a 2-1 home win over Remo Stars.

    They now have 41 points.

    In yesterday’s third game, Lobi Stars started life in their third home ground this season on a losing note when they fell to Ikorodu City courtesy of a late Shola Adelani strike in Enugu. It was their 14th loss of the season.

    They are rooted to the basement of the table with 23 points, eight points from safety. Ikorodu City shot to third on the table with 44 points.

    Remo Stars have opened up a 10 point gap at the top of the NPFL following a laboured 2-0 home win over Kwara United at the Remo Stars Stadium, Ikenne yesterday.

    Shooting Stars had drawn at home to Lobi Stars to hand the initiative to the Sky Blue Stars who knew a win would take them closer to their historic league title after coming second and third in the past three seasons.

    Kwara United did give a fight before they finally succumbed in the 80th minute of the encounter scored by Samuel Anakwe and the Sky Blue Stars still managed to get a second before the end of the game.

    Remo Stars have moved to 51 points as against 41 points of Shooting Stars who are second on the log.

    In another game played yesterday, Enyimba could not build on their 1-0 home success over Rivers United last weekend following their 2-1 defeat to Katsina United at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium, Katsina yesterday.

    The People’s Elephant conceded the first goal of the game in the 40th minute through Lukman Bello and the same player doubled the advantage in the 52nd minute for the home team.

    Enyimba did pull a goal back from the spot in the 92nd minute through Ekene Awazie but it was too little too late as the 2023 champions will return to Aba empty handed.

    Shooting Stars failed in their quest to close the gap on runaway group leaders, Remo Stars after they were held to a 2-2 draw in their NPFL Matchday 25 tie in Ibadan.

    The Oluyole Warriors had gone on eight game unbeaten streak before successive losses to Kwara United and Heartland and the game that followed was a home draw against Lobi Stars.

    Joshua Akpan and Sodiq Ibrahim scored for the home team in the 18th  and 92nd  minutes while Ossy Martins notched a double in the 35th and 45th minutes before he was red carded for second bookable offense in the 76th minute but the Pride of Benue held on to get the draw.

    Shooting Stars are still second with 41 points from 25 games.

    In Lagos, Ikorodu City came back from a goal down to beat Plateau United 2-1. Albert Hilary with the game’s opener in the 38th minute but Olatunji Abdulmalik and Tosin Oyedokun’s late goals returned the Oga Boys to the fifth spot with 38 points while the Peace Boys are in 16th  spot with 28 points.

    In Maiduguri, Bendel Insurance survived the onslaught of El Kanemi Warriors to secure a goalless draw. El Kanemi are in eighth spot with 36 points while Insurance retained their 10th  spot with 35 points.

    Abia Warriors continued to grow from strength to strength after they exerted revenge on Fidelis Ilechukwu led Rangers whom they pipped 1-0 through Antoine Ijoma’s 43rd  minute goal. The Umuchineke Boys are now fourth with 39 points. Rangers dropped to the sixth point despite having 38 points.

    Akwa United struggles continued abated in Uyo following their disappointing 1-1 draw at home to Rivers United. Home boy and former player of the Promise Keepers notched the first goal of the game directly from the corner kick in the seventh minute before Abson Mare’s equaliser in the 52nd  minute.

    Bayelsa United needed a late minute strike before savaging a 2-2 draw at home to Nasarawa United while Heartland’s second half collapsed saw them let slip a goal lead to lose 2-1 in the bumpy Kontagora Stadium in Minna.

    In another tie, Sunshine Stars were held to a 1-1 draw by Kano Pillars at Ikenne.

    NWFL: Remo Stars, Bayelsa Queens continue Premiership dominance

    Remo Stars Ladies continued to hold on to the top spot in Group A of the Nigeria Women’s Football League Premiership after another routine home win over Abia Angels while Bayelsa Queens held Rivers Angels in Port Harcourt to keep top spot in Group B after Matchday Five fixtures were played yesterday.

    At Ikenne Remo, Remo Stars Ladies remain unbeaten after five games following a 2-0 home win over hard-fighting Abia Angels. Bolaji Olamide’s double, one in each half were enough to keep the Sky Blue Ladies atop the Group A with 13 points and two points better than reigning league champions, Edo Queens. Abia Angels have slumped to the fifth spot with seven points.

    In Benin City, Mary Mamudu and Goodness Osigwe’s quick-fire first half goals handed Edo Queens a crucial 2-0 home win over Nasarawa Amazons in a thrilling game played under floodlights at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium. Edo Queens are second with 11 points but Nasarawa Amazons are fourth with nine points.

    Ekiti Queens defeated Confluence Queens 2-0 to move to the third spot with nine points. The Ado Ekiti side have won all their three home games but have been unsuccessful in their away games.

    Dannaz Ladies secured their first away point of the season after they held Heartland Queens to a goalless draw in Owerri. The Owerri side are yet to win a game after five games despite playing three matches already at home.

    In Group B, it continued to be a ding dong affair between Bayelsa Queens and Rivers Angels for the leadership of the group with the former holding unto it by just superior goals difference with both teams on 11 points each after the two teams battled to a 1-1 draw in a South-South derby in Port Harcourt.

    Peace Effiong put the 2021 NWFL Premiership champions ahead in the 10th  minute but Bayelsa Queens who emerged winners a year later staged a comeback through Zainab Olapade stunner 17 minutes later.

    FC Robo Queens pipped Ibom Angels 2-1 to stay in third spot with 10 points while Adamawa Queens thrashed Benue Queens 2-0 to add to the misery of the topflight debutants who have now lost all their five games. Adamawa Queens are fourth with seven points.

    Naija Ratels are still unbeaten in the league this season after five games but they were held to a draw at home by Delta Queens again for the second game running. Naija Ratels are fifth with seven points while Delta Queens who emerged as the league champions in 2023 bagged their first away point and are now in the seventh spot with four points.

    Remo Stars, Shooting Stars, Bayelsa United win big in NPFL Matchday 21

    Remo Stars further extended their lead at the apex of the Nigeria Premier Football League table to six points following a 3-2  home win over hard fighting Abia Warriors yesterday in one of the Matchday 21 games.

    The Sky Blue Stars started on a wrong footing and were two goals behind in the opening half hour  following  goals by Ayodele Ezekiel and Anthony Ijoma for Abia Warriors in the 25th  and 27th minute.

    Remo Stars began a great comeback in the 38th  minute through Adedayo Olamilekan who notched his fourth goal of the season. They got the equaliser in the halftime stoppage time through Ibrahim Jabaar who nicked his fourth of the season as well.

    Daniel Ogunmodede tutored-Sky Blue Stars completed the recovery with the third goal in the 53rd  minute off Franck Mawuena to send the fans at the Remo Stars Stadium, Ikenne into frenzy.

    Remo Stars are still atop with 42 points while Abia Warriors dropped to the seventh spot with 30 points.

    In Ibadan, Shooting Stars defeated Nasarawa United 2-0 to move to the second spot with 36 points but they may be overtaken by Rivers United today who plays Bendel Insurance in Port Harcourt.

    A goal in each half courtesy Tijani Kabiru and Sodiq Ibrahim in the 15th and 83rd minutes sent the Oluyole Warriors to their sixth straight victory. They are still with a game at hand.

    Wounded Bayelsa United went goals berserk in Yenagoa walloping Sunshine Stars 4-1 in a rather one sided affair.

    The Prosperity Boys scored first in the 15th  minute through  Ifeanyi Ogba who just joined the team from Kwara United but Waheed Adebayo another newcomer for the Owena Whales from Lobi Stars bagged the equaliser in the 37th  minute.

    It was all Bayelsa United show in the second half with Auwal Sadiq, Ogba (again) and Ofem Eyong goals in the 51st , 68th  and 90th  minutes. The win has helped the Yenagoa side to the 11th  spot with 27 points while Sunshine Stars are in 14th  position with 24 points.

    In Uyo, Akwa United were unable to conjure up a home win against desperate Lobi Stars at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium. It was the visitors that stunned their host with the curtain raiser in the 28th  minute through Onyekachi Okafor who cut through his marker before unleashing a thunderous strike to the far corner.

    The Promise Keepers were guilty of calamitous misses before ever reliable Friday Apollos came to his team’s rescue with the equaliser in the 72nd  minute off Kabir Osoba’s cross.

    In Lagos, Ikorodu City paid Kano Pillars back in their own coins at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Lagos following a 4-1 win.

    The Oga Boys had been beaten 4-0 in Katsina in their domestic league now in September last year by Sai Masu Gida but they sensed blood when they raised to a 2-0 lead after just 20 minutes through Shola Adelani and Harrison Austin’s goals before Kano Pillars reduced the goals arrears to 2-1 in the 37th minute through Abba Adam’s strike.

    A thought of a second half comeback was extinguished by Ikorodu City when Rabiu Ali slammed the ball into his own net in the 54th   minute before Ayomide Cole added gloss to the result with the fourth goal in the 74th  minute.

    In the last game of yesterday, El Kanemi Warriors pipped Rangers International FC who have now suffered second straight defeat 2-1 in Maiduguri.

    Nasiru Salihu scored first for the Borno Army in the 18th minute but the reigning league champs fought back gamely and were rewarded with the equaliser in the 63rd minute through Isaac Saviour.

    El Kanemi Warriors had the last laugh with the winning goal scored by the same Salihu in the 74th  minute.

    The Borno Army climbed to the top fourth spot with 32 points because of the win but Rangers fell to the sixth spot with 31 points. They have now suffered second consecutive defeat.

    Today Rivers United will host Bendel Insurance in Port Harcourt while Katsina United will hope to return to winning ways on Azeez Mohammed’s second debut as the coach of the side when they host Plateau United.

    In Minna, will hope to do a follow up to their magnificent victory in Enugu with a home tie against Kwara United while it will be Oriental War between Enyimba and Heartland in Aba.

    Enyimba beat Heartland 3-1 in Owerri in the first game of the season but having lost their last two league games to Kano Pillars and Kwara United respectively, the People’s Elephant will be under immense pressure to win the tie.
