  • Handle pilgrims with respect, Ambode tells hajj officials

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has urged the Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board (LSMPWB) officials to handle pilgrims with respect in order to achieve good results during this year’s hajj operation.

He enjoined the officials to handle, manage and supervise the pilgrims well in line with international best practice.

Ambode, represented by Commissioner for Home Affairs and Amir-ul-Hajj, Dr. AbdulHakeem AbdulLateef, was addressing the LSMPWB staff at the old secretariat in Ikeja GRA.

Ambode appealed to the pilgrims to be patient, tolerant and to exhibit high level of endurance while performing the Hajj rites.

  • Lagos CP to officers: respect rights

Lagos Commissioner of Police Mr Edgar Imohimi has urged officers to respect human rights.

He spoke when 210 officers graduated from a training on “Advanced human rights and community policing standards”.

It was organised by the Crime Victims Foundation of Nigeria (CRIVIFON) for officers from the rank of Inspectors to Deputy Superintendent  of Police drawn from 120 divisions.

Imohinmi, represented by an Assistant Commissioner of Police, Ronke Okunade, reminded the officers that the people they are policing have fundamental rights that must be enforced.

“This is why we considered the training you have just undergone as very important because it is through this way that you would know the laws bordering on human rights and why you must respect  the rights of every member of the public,” she said.

CRIVIFON founder Mrs Gloria Egbuji praised the officers for keeping the country safe, urging them to to do more despite challenges.

Egbuji, who noted that many policemen were unaware that they had been insured, urged the authorities to create a platform for them to update their insurance information.

She advised policemen to focus on crime prevention and not dabble into civil matters.

An Assistant Superintendent of Police Okon Victor, urged the participants to share the knowledge they acquired.

“Now that you have been trained, I expect you to go back and start doing things the right way as dictated by the law. Now is the time for you to effect a change in the environment where you operate,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of the class,  the governor, Superintendent Ajoke Akande, thanked the Police authorities and CRIVIFON for exposing them to human rights issues and promised that they would not let the authority down.

“When next you see us, you would be proud of us as gallant officers,” she assured.

Among the topics discussed were: Human rights laws, Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA), Community policing, Child rights laws.

  • Treat my co-contestants with respect, Fayemi urges supporters

Minister of Mines and Steel Development and winner of the Ekiti State All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary, Dr Kayode Fayemi, has cautioned his supporters against harbouring any ill feelings towards his co-contestants and their supporters, saying that they are all leaders who should be accorded great respect in view of their sterling qualities and contributions to the party.

Fayemi stated this while addressing his supporters at the headquarters of his campaign office, shortly after he emerged as the APC standard bearer for the July 14 governorship election.

The APC candidate noted that the activities of all the aspirants in the past few months had further strengthened the party, adding that any of the aspirants would have made a better governor than any can-didate the PDP could present.

He urged his supporters to bury any differences they might have against anybody, stressing that henceforth the party would work together as one big family in the onerous task of dislodging the PDP-led administration in the state.

He said: “If you really want us to succeed in in the quest to form the next government in the state, I urge you all not to carry over pre-primary hostilities in your relationship with my co-contestants and their supporters.

“We are one big family. We cannot all win in an election. But one thing I know is that all the contestants are eminent Ekiti sons and daughters who are qualified to govern  the state better than the present occupier of the office.

“Therefore as we go into the election, we must see ourselves as members of the same family who deserve mutual respect. No more social media and verbal attacks henceforth. Our only enemy is the PDP.

“Note that the opposition tried all the tricks in the book to cause maximum damage to our inter-personal relationships, but they failed to achieve their aim, as manifested in the success of the primary. I want to plead with you not to help them to achieve their aim.

“We have a big job to do to reclaim our state and that should be your focus, so that we can succeed in the restoration of our dignity and provide good life for our people again.”

  • ‘Govt should treat Nigerians with respect’

The National Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA), Chief (Dr.) Adebowale Omotoso, has urged the government to treat its nationals with self-respect and dignity.

Omotoso spoke at Awe town, Oyo State.

He said, “Education should increase the consciousness level of Nigerian youths and socialise them into the national culture.  But what we have now is education without morals due to lack of power monitoring and clear-cut policies devoid of political sentiments in regulating education or meaningful development.  Ideally, politics influences education through the policies and decisions that are made by the political leadership to ensure the realisation of national, state, and party objectives.  As a result of these notions, there are many political problems that jeopardised educational management in the country.”

He added that ‘’the society has degenerated from a community of people with high moral values and dignity to a state of near madness, collapse of moral values and tolerance of immorality’’.

  • ‘A man’s greatest need is respect, not sex or food’

‘A man’s greatest need is respect, not sex or food’

Rev (Mrs.) Funke Felix-Adejumo, wife of the President of Agape Ministries, is a woman of many parts. The farmer, preacher, motivational speaker and female empowerment has written about 70 books with others in the works. In this interview with Yetunde Oladeinde, the amazon talks about her passion for women, their challenges, how to get the best from your man and life being married for over three decades.

Coping with family and career has been a challenge for women.  What was your experience like and how did you cope?

God has blessed me with one of the most responsible family men on earth. When our marriage was young and we were raising our kids, my husband was involved committedly.  We raised the kids together. He is a family man par excellence. He helped with school runs and works.

He put the children and me before church work and ministry. His principle is: God first, family next, God’s work/career third!  This disposition simplified my life extensively.

There were times when my husband would tell me to rest while he rocked the baby to sleep. I’m grateful to the Lord and to him for this. It helped a great deal in the pursuit of my career and ministry

How can women get the best from their husbands?

The greatest need of a man is not sex; he can get that from a prostitute if he’s not born again and, of course, contract veneral diseases!  It’s not food; he can get that from any good restaurant. A man’s greatest need is RESPECT, particularly public respect from his wife.

Some women disrespect their husbands. It’s a man you treat like a king that will treat you like a queen.  Give your husband the highest level of respect and honour in your culture and watch him bloom in his love for you.

There’s no honour I will give to any human being on earth, including my spiritual mentors anybody at that if I have not given it to my husband.  After the Lord Jesus Christ, Felix Remi Adejumo is the only king in my kingdom and the only emperor in my empire!

What has kept you going in your marriage?

My husband and I have actually been married for 31years. Our marriage will be 32 on September 8. The major and greatest force in our marriage is God. And that’s not to sound religious.  It is what God keeps that is kept. John 3:27 is my favourite scripture: “A man can receive nothing except it be given him from heaven.”

God did not create a world in which He will not be needed. He instituted marriage in the first instance. So He is the greatest marriage expert and consultant.

Both of us are born again Christians, so we don’t joke with our relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. This reflects in the way we love and honour each other. It reflects in the way we handle misunderstandings. It reflects in everything we do.

In 31 years, my husband and I pray together every day!  When we are not together, we pray on the phone. Remember, we did not start travelling separately until a few years ago. That was before technology came into the picture.

Also, we agreed on transparency and honesty. We agreed that this will be the trade mark of our relationship. There’s nothing we don’t discuss. And I mean absolutely nothing, including the minutest details of life.

We tell ourselves the absolute truth; what nobody on earth can tell us.  We confront our selves. And our bedroom has remained our ‘court room’ for years.

Also, we are committed to making the marriage work. Divorce is not an option for us. That has been our cliché from the beginning. No matter how threatened our relationship is, we agreed that divorce will never be an option. We believe in ourselves and we collaborate on everything.

Then, my husband is my only and best friend and I am his.  I always encourage singles to marry their friends.  Don’t marry someone you don’t like or you struggle to like. It won’t last. A true friend is somebody that knows where you stink but still remains faithful and loyal. We are our “Besties”, unconditional love is the secret. I love you for who you and not what you have. This is the love my precious husband and I share.

You speak to thousands of women globally. What are their greatest fears?

It is the same with women everywhere and the greatest concern is security. Women worry a lot about the future. We are all bothered with what does it hold for them and children? We are concerned with whether our children will turn out well. Will their husbands remain faithful?

Many men have agonised they cannot seem to understand their women. What really do women want from their men?

Women want men they can look up to. We want affirmation, validation, someone who will speak highly of us in the public. We want a role model to our children, a friend not a boss; a decent man, not a flirt; someone who speaks our love language, who is responsible enough to take good care of our financial and emotional needs.

We want God-fearing men who can defend and stand up to defend us.

Conflict resolution is a major marital issue for women. Do you have thoughts of how best to get it done?

I will say it all boils down to the tongue and temper. If these two are properly managed by husband and wife, there will be less stress in marriage. Some men don’t treat their wives well. To them a woman is a necessary evil, a baby-manufacturing machine and a glorified slave. This mentality is absolutely wrong. Your wife is an integral part of your life and should be treated with dignity.

Also the wife should honour her husband. Don’t prove to your husband that you are in competition with him. Just complement him. Even when you are hurting or angry, don’t be rude. Relate well with your in-laws. Don’t be mean to people. Anybody can become great. No one knows tomorrow.

What is your concept of total submission as it relates to modern women?

Biblically speaking, submission is neither subjugation nor slavery. Only insecure men oppress their wives! And I say that with every sense of responsibility. When you see a man that does not allow his wife to shine or give expression to God’s grace on her life, he is a coward!

He may look bold and loud, but he’s definitely struggling with serious complex issues!

Ephesians 5:21 says:  “Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God. People quote from verse 22 but the instruction actually starts from verse 21!

In my opinion, submission is “STRENGTH PUT UNDER CONTROL”. God expects the woman to equally prosper and be blessed. Genesis 1:26-28 says ‘God blessed THEM’, not him only! But once you are in the institution of marriage, you don’t flaunt your blessing in such a way that you disrespect your spouse.

Anything that has more than one head is a monster. As a woman, you allow your husband to be the leader and you prayerfully and graciously assist him.

Do you believe in the concept of full housewife?

Yes and no.  Yes, because there may be a season when a woman needs to be a full time house wife for the sake of her children but it should not be the norm. Full time house wife is full time suffering PLC! (laughter).

What is the vision behind the Winning Edge Conference?

Out of a constant thirst for God and his mandate on the earth, the vision of women on the Winning Edge Conference was born.

This is a Godly calling to all women to pump self-confidence into them; to raise Godly women who will build good homes, raise Godly children, be wealthy and stand toe to toe with other women of various cadres without denying the faith.

It’s an international conference, aimed at ministering to women of all ages and strata with the hopes of prayerfully and biblically discussing key issues as they affect the woman, her purpose, her future and her dignity. It is for the woman; it is a large umbrella which includes the single parent, married, divorced, career woman, politician, matured single, widow, etc. Whatever category she falls, as long as she is a woman, the Winning Edge family will be there for her.

It’s also our opportunity to lead the unsaved to the Lord and equally strengthen women in particular as we prayerfully and biblically discuss women issues like relationship with the Lord, career, singleness, marriage, leadership, abuse, divorce, widowhood, infidelity, violence, parenting and others in a relaxed atmosphere where God’s presence is consciously honoured.

What marks out the conference from several others in town?

It’s majorly a discussion conference. There are panel sessions where questions from women that have been collated before and during the course of the programme will be answered. We also have the pay zero shop, which is an avenue to give back to the woman in need and empower widows. There is also the African Praise Night, which is a time to return praises to God.

The African woman owes the continent the kind of revolution she desires at every level of continental development. We are capable. We have the potential. God has started to heal our wounds.

We are learning to forgive the people that hurt us. We are moving forward. We are determined to cooperate with our fathers, brothers, husbands and sons to bring a change that we believe in.

  • Enyimba willing to show Vipers respect

Enyimba willing to show Vipers respect

Enyimba FC have stated that they would treat their CAF Champions League preliminary round opponents, Vipers of Uganda with respect based on what the Southern African senior national team did to the Super Eagles recently in a friendly match.

Nigerians thought the Ugandan cranes would be a very easy opponent when the Eagles faced them in Uyo on March 25th  but the team led by Bosnian, Milutin Sredojevic shocked Nigeria 1-0 in front of capacity seated crowd at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.

It was on the premise of this that the Chairman of Enyimba FC, Felix Anyansi Agwu told SportingLife that Vipers would be given the necessary respect but would be firm and thorough in their preparation for the tie with the Ugandans.

He said when he got the news of their tie with Vipers, what came to his mind was the encounter the Eagles had with the Cranes of Uganda in Uyo where the visitors unexpectedly ran away with a victory.

Anyansi Agwu stressed that with most of the players that visited Nigeria then plying their trade in the local league, they may also form the bedrock of Vipers and  for that reason they must not be taken for granted at all.

The astute football administrator and the incumbent Chairman of the Technical and Development Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) also affirmed that the tie has been made more challenging by the fact that they would be playing the first leg in Kampala during the weekend of February 12-14, 2016 before the second leg in Aba on February 28.

“I have told my players that the game against Vipers would be very tough because when the draw was made, what came to my mind was what the Ugandans did to the Eagles when they came to Nigeria for a friendly game.

“We are going to visit them first which has made the tie very difficult but we are going to show them respect and ensure that we prepare very well for them,” Anyansi Agwu told SportingLife.

Enyimba are the champions of the just concluded Glo Premier League after winning a record seventh league title at the expense of Warri Wolves and Nasarawa United with 70 points from 38 matches.

  • Ikhana: We will continue to respect our opponents

Ikhana: We will continue to respect our opponents

Enyimba FC head coach, Kadiri Ikhana has told his players to put celebration on hold for now till when the People’s Elephant achieve their set objective-the historic seventh league title.

The Aba Giants drew goalless in Lafia against Nasarawa United on Wednesday and despite opening a three point gap at the top of the table, Enyimba are not comfortable with Warri Wolves lurking around to usurp them and end their title chase.

Ikhana in a chat with SportingLife noted that it was very important for his players not to put their legs off the pedal and get carried away with the euphoria of their away draw against the Solid Miners.

The former Sharks and Kano Pillars’ coach told SportingLife that he has no doubt in his mind that Enyimba would be league champions but that they must show respect to all their remaining opponents including Warri Wolves who are still to visit Aba this season.

Ikhana charged his players to come all out against Kwara United in their next league tie knowing that another three points would take them further closer to their ambition of winning the league.

Enyimba are first on the log with 62 points from 34 matches and they will face Kwara United next on Wednesday in a Match Day 35.

  • You don’t have respect for rule of law, Oyo APC tells Accord

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State has berated the Accord Party and five of its members over a fresh suit filed against the lawmaker representing Oyo Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Senator Monsurat Sunmonu, without any recourse to the pending petition before the tribunal.

Ina statement issued by its Director of Publicity and Strategy, Olawale Sadare, APC described the development as another evil plot to derail democracy and make a mockery of the judiciary.

“To start with, neither Sen. Monsurat Sunmonu nor anybody from the APC was aware of the purported suit until it was reported in some dailies on Friday and naturally, one begins to query its authenticity since no court paper had been served on the supposed defendant(s).

“Those whose names were listed as plaintiffs are known card-carrying members and chieftains of the Accord Party who have always identified with Mr. Bisi Ilaka, the candidate of their party in the Oyo Central Senatorial District election. Ilaka, following his heavy defeat by Sen. Sunmonu in the March 28, 2015 election filed a petition at the tribunal which is set to give its final verdict on the matter any moment from now.

The statement added: “Among the latter day challengers of the former speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly who is now a federal lawmaker in the upper legislative chamber is the state administrative secretary of the Accord Party who was stopped from being illegally brought in as an emergency forensic analyst in the Ladoja vs Ajimobi governorship election petition case which is still on-going before the tribunal.

“To set the record straight, the same allegation which formed the basis of the reported fresh litigation had been included in the petition before the tribunal and it was argued extensively. Therefore, it could be concluded that the Accord Party jesters are all out again not only to waste the time of the High Court of justice but also to abuse the court process as they just devised another means to remain in the news after the various tribunals might have refused all their respective prayers,” Sadare submitted.

  • BET has no respect for African artistes, says Fuse ODG

BET has no respect for African artistes, says Fuse ODG

•As Wizkid, Yemi Alade lose to Ghana’s Stonebwoy

The 2015 BET Awards have come and gone, leaving in its trail, a lot of reactions.

BET is one of the many awards most African artistes dream to win, but winners from Africa are given their awards back stage and don’t have a chance to receive their award live or give a live thank you message, which are usually pre-recorded.

However, some have even defended BET, claiming that they didn’t receive their award backstage even when it was clear they did.

One artiste who is not happy about this practice is Azonto crooner, Fuse ODG. The artiste took to his social media page to express his disappointment about the award saying; “Dear @BET the reason why I didn’t come is that you give our awards backstage, you have no respect for our hard work and achievements.”

Fuse ODG is a Ghanaian singer who was born in London and has hits such as Antenna, featuring American singer Wyclef Jean, and Azonto among others.

Meanwhile, Ghana’s Dancehall star Stonebwoy defeated Nigeria’s Wizkid and Yemi Alade in the Best International Act: Africa category at Sunday’s star-studded ceremony in Los Angeles.

Stonebwoy beat Aka (South Africa), Fally Ipupa (Dr Congo), Sarkodie (Ghana), Sauti Sol (Kenya), The Soil (South Africa), Wizkid (Nigeria) and Yemi Alade (Nigeria) to take home the prestigious prize.

  • Respect peace pacts, Owelle warns politicians

Respect peace pacts, Owelle warns politicians

S the March 28 and April 11, 2015 elections draw closer, more Nigerians have expressed concern over the mounting tension largely traced to divisive utterances and character assassination.

One of the concerned Nigerians who cautioned against this trend this week is Frank M. Owelle, the Group Chairman/CEO of Total Aluminium Systems Limited (manufacturers of Longspan Aluminium Roofing Sheets in Nigeria).

Owelle advised political parties and their members to be more progressive in their utterances and respect the peace pact they entered into at various levels in the interest of Nigeria.

The advice was given in a statement where the international businessman said he was pained at the continued gush of intemperate language by politicians in their quest to win the forth-coming general election, warning that unless politicians retrace their steps, the country risked being plunged into a state of anarchy.

According to Owelle, while Nigerians expected mature politicking in the light of the various peace accords signed at different levels, politicians have continued to heat up the polity with their utterances.

He also expressed the belief that the postponement of the elections has enabled the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to address some of the challenges that could have impaired the elections.

Advising parties and politicians, he said: “It has become very necessary for anybody who has the interest of Nigeria at heart to raise the alarm that the way things are going could land the country in trouble if we do not immediately apply caution. I want to appeal to politicians and all the political parties to be more patriotic and progressive in their utterances,” Owelle said.

According to him, “I am of the opinion that every political ambition should be geared towards nation building and service to humanity. It saddens my heart therefore, to see the shenanigans going on, all in the name of trying to grab power.

“I want to challenge the leadership of all the political parties to ensure that their members, no matter how highly placed, do not work at cross purposes with them when it comes to promotion of peace and unity in the country,” he added.

Owelle also condemned the level of violence being recorded so far, saying that killing fellow Nigerians in a bid to win an election does not help the Nigeria project.

He said: “We have heard of burning of party secretariats, burning of campaign buses and materials of some parties, and sporadic shootings at campaign rallies. Some billboards belonging to opponents have also been reportedly destroyed across the country, and the worst of them all was the attack in some places of the President’s campaign convoy. I said the worst because, although Goodluck Jonathan is the candidate of a party, he is the incumbent president and must be accorded all courtesies of that office.

“The brewing violence must be condemned by all well-meaning people of this country. I wholly believe in a statement credited to President Jonathan that his ambition is not worth the blood of any Nigerian. This should be the mindset of every politician or political operator in the country. I urge all parties to respect the peace pacts signed at various levels,” he said.

On the postponement of the elections and INEC’s efforts at conducting a credible general election, Owelle said: “My advice is that every citizen of this country should cooperate with Professor Attahiru Jega to ensure that we have a successful election. We must also believe in the ability of the military to make the country conducive, security wise, for the smooth conduct of the general election on March 28 and April 11, 2015. I am convinced that INEC is now more prepared than before to deliver on the critical assignment of giving Nigerians credible elections, notwithstanding the challenges it may be facing. But they need the cooperation of everybody.”

He also said,”2015 general election is very important to every Nigerian. We all know that transiting from one administration to another through a general election is not only tasking but very dicey in terms of material and human resources involved. It is much more cumbersome in a country like ours where every Tom and Harry wants to be in government.”
