  • PDP Chair: Ribadu, Odili, Mohammed on the cards

PDP Chair: Ribadu, Odili, Mohammed on the cards

An underground battle over who becomes the next National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has started in earnest with three candidates emerging top favourites for the seat, reports Assistant Editor, Remi Adelowo

Just two months after losing the presidential election for the first time since 1999, the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is already dreaming big for the next election in 2019.

Now gradually easing into its new, but somewhat unfamiliar role as the major opposition party in the country, major stakeholders of the party have, in the last few weeks, been brainstorming on how best to reposition the party against the backdrop of its massive loss of goodwill among Nigerians, which has raised fears that it could become irrelevant in the political scheme of things, or in the worst case scenario, go extinct.

While the second scenario remains a far-fetched possibility, leaders of the party are however not taking chances.

Though presently in control of 13 out of the 36 states of the federation, not a few of the major stakeholders of the former ruling party are allegedly nursing secret fears that the PDP as it stands today, is at the verge of being blown away from the political space in spite of boasts by some of its leaders that the party would be back in power come 2019.

Soon after the last general elections, a fact finding committee was set up by the immediate former National Chairman to reach out to every major stakeholder, including aggrieved members and recommend the way forward.

Sources disclosed that one of the major recommendations of the committee is a holistic rebranding of the party through series of ways, few of which include constituting a new credible National Working Committee (NWC) and reaching out to its former members now in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to return.

But what is of utmost concern to the party leaders presently is the election of a new national chairman, with words rife that the pioneer Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, is the odds-on favourite to succeed Prince Uche Secondus, who is holding forth, albeit in an acting capacity.

It was gathered that those rooting for Ribadu are of the belief that this is the most auspicious time for the party to catch in on to the former anti-corruption czar’s favourable public perception, which can serve as a match up to the integrity of President Muhammadu Buhari. Ribadu’s integrity, said sources in the party, could be used as a bargaining edge by the party in successive elections.

The Nation further gathered that party leaders are also aware of the perceived image of the party in many quarters as very corrupt and are determined to change that negative impression with Ribadu as the national chairman.

As a matter of fact, PDP apparatchiks believe that the party lost the last general elections because of President Buhari’s anti-corruption credentials, which many voters keyed into by voting massively for the APC.

With the party’s national convention, where a new national chairman and other Board of Trustees (BoT) members will emerge, billed for August, strong indications have emerged that supporters of Ribadu have begun a mobilisation and campaign drive among members from the six geo-political zones.

“The leadership of the party is looking at somebody with a good track record of doggedness, forthrightness and somebody that is not easily intimidated. Nuhu Ribadu fits the profile,” a PDP insider said.

The source further disclosed that at a time when a man of high moral standing like Buhari is at the helm of the nation’s affairs, the PDP, now in the opposition, cannot afford to have somebody of questionable character or somebody who does not command the respect of Nigerians and the international community as its leader.

Ribadu earned global campaign while serving as EFCC chairman between 2003 and 2008, during which he successfully prosecuted cases involving several high profile individuals.

Moves to draft Ribadu, who was the PDP governorship candidate in Adamawa State in the last elections has gathered momentum, with some unconfirmed reports claiming that he enjoys the blessing of former President Goodluck Jonathan and some other party stalwarts.

Another factor working in Ribadu’s favour, it was learnt, is his relatively good understanding of the inner workings of the ruling party, having been a presidential candidate of the defunct Action Congress Nigeria (now part of the APC) in the 2011 general elections.

Following the outcome of the last elections, a cold war had ensued among its leaders, with claims and counter-claims over the real reasons the party performed woefully at the polls.

Why North is favoured for the chairmanship

Insinuations that the PDP lost the last elections due to the refusal of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan to honour a one term pact he signed with PDP northern leaders came to the fore again recently with a statement credited to Dr. Cairo Ojuigbo, the National Vice Chairman of the party, alluding to that fact in a newspaper interview.

This belief may have swelled the support base of Ribadu to become the next national chairman, as ceding the seat to the South-South as some party members are proposing, may completely obliterate the little support base of the party in the North.

Of the 19 states in the North, only two, Gombe and Taraba are controlled by the PDP, a fact that is not lost on the party leaders who are apprehensive of what fate lies ahead for the party in the 2019 elections if something is not done quickly to appease the region.

While the Ribadu candidacy is being strongly considered, those opposed to him say with the former EFCC boss at the helm of the party, the fortunes of the party may plummet further than expected.

The temperament of the former retired police officer, his sometimes controversial off-the-cuff statements and lack of relative experience to manage a complex political organisation are being cited by opponents as factors that may cause unanticipated crisis if eventually he emerges the National Chairman.

Interestingly, support for Ribadu is coming from unusual quarters. Beside Jonathan, former Minister of Aviation, Fami Olukayode, recently on his Twitter handle, drummed support for the Adamawa State-born politician, wit this statement: “The best thing that our great party, the PDP can do now is to draft in @NuhuRibadu as our National Chairman. We need credibility and strength.”

    Other likely contenders

Other notable PDP leaders in contention for the position of the national chairmanship include former governors of Rivers and Cross River states respectively, Dr. Peter Odili and Mr. Liyel Imoke and the immediate former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Bala Mohammed.

After he served his term as governor, Odili kept a low profile throughout the eight-year tenure of his successor, Rotimi Amaechi, owing largely to a cold war between the two.

Those who want Odili onboard the PDP chairmanship seat, argue that aside the fact that his name needs no introduction among many Nigerians; he would also easily command the respect of many party members, particularly the governors.

In the case of Imoke, who has consistently denied having any interest in the seat, it was learnt that his name keeps coming up on account of being non-controversial, coupled with his demeanor, two attributes needed to unite the party and move it forward.

His alleged non-interest in the contest may, however, count against him, sources say.

If the Ribadu option fails to fly, Bala Mohammed may be drafted to run for the seat, it was gathered. The former minister may not be too much of a hard sell as he is known to be a loyalist of ex-President Jonathan, who from all indications would have a large say in who becomes the next PDP boss.

  • Obasanjo: Ribadu was once poisoned

    Obasanjo: Ribadu was once poisoned

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said ex-chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Mallam Nuhu Ribadu was once poisoned in the course of his duties as anti-corruption czar.

Obasanjo disclosed this at an international forum on Third Tana High Level Forum on Security in Africa in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

He also revealed that Ribadu created enemies for him because of the ruthlessness with which he carried out his responsibilities of tackling corruption.

Obasanjo, who spoke from the floor following a presentation on Illicit Financial Flow and Governance of Natural Resources made by Ribadu, affirmed that he had known from experience that the fight against corruption attracts a lot of enemies.

The former president declared that he had no fear of anyone still living in Nigeria, adding, “it is rather them that fear me.”

Saying that Ribadu took on a lot of highly connected people in his fight against corruption, Obasanjo said that the former anti-corruption chief was once poisoned, causing a scare in concerned quarters.

“It was a matter of life and death” the former president said. He gave no details of the incident.

Obasanjo said that once Ribadu was appointed, he gave him a free hand and that Ribadu investigated him, his late wife and several persons close to him.

He also narrated a story of how a serving minister, who was his senior in secondary school, was indicted and prosecuted by the EFCC, adding that when the minister was found wanting, “there was no issue of seniority again.”

On leadership, Obasanjo, who is also the chairperson of the Tana Forum, re-echoed Ribadu’s submission that at the centre of the anti-corruption fight is the need for willing political leadership at the highest level.

He, however, added that the leader also needed legislations to work with.

Obasanjo recalled narrating his experience with the bill establishing ICPC which, he said, was whittled down by lawmakers, who felt they could be victims of the law.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn thanked Ribadu for his presentation, which, he said, highlighted many good things about Nigeria, different from what is portrayed in the media.

Ribadu listed measures African countries can take to tackle illicit financial flow and repatriate money already illegally taken out of the African countries.

He said Africa needed honest and committed leaders who will set examples with themselves by eschewing corruption and closing avenues of illicit financial flow.

According to him, it is the seriousness and commitment showed by the political leadership that will convince other foreign countries to work with them towards recovering looted monies stashed abroad.

Ribadu also emphasised the need for concerted effort among countries and a synergy among law enforcement agencies so that looters could be caught.

The governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Adamawa State, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu on Sunday conceded defeat to Sen. Jibrilla Bindow of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The former Economic and Financial Crimes Commission chairman said he took his loss in good faith because leadership is a product of God’s anointment.

Ribadu made his position known in a concession address to the people of the state.

He said: “My dear people of Adamawa State, I greet you in the best form of greetings. I had dreamt of coming back home to lead our dear state to greater strides after years of underdevelopment.

“I started this journey in August last year and successfully got the mandate of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) to fly its flag for the April 11 gubernatorial election. I came into this race knowing fully well that political contests are two-way traffics – one either wins or loses.

“As a man of faith, I was also aware that leadership responsibility is a product of God’s anointment.

“In the course of this journey, I have seen genuine support and encouragement from the people of Adamawa State.

“Several individuals from Adamawa and beyond contributed generously to keep the campaign going and many others devoted their time, energy and intellect to see to the success of this project. I sincerely appreciate this belief in my person and my ambition.

“The support I got from my party’s leadership and individual members from President Goodluck Jonathan down to the party agents in our polling units was overwhelming and gratifying.

“The party leader in the state, Barrister Bala James Nggilari and the state party chairman, Chief Joel Madaki led their lieutenants in making this journey memorable.”

Ribadu said he had no choice than to accept the preference of the majority for Bindow.

He added: “I came into this race with lofty dreams and clear vision for our dear state, but the voice of the majority has not given me this chance. I take this in good faith.

“I want to take this opportunity to congratulate the winner and pray that at the end of it all our dear state will witness the needed progress and development it so much desires. God bless Adamawa State, God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

    Adamawa: Atiku disowns pro-Ribadu messages

Former Vice President and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Atiku Abubakar has dissociated himself from a purported photograph of him canvassing for votes for Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Adamawa State.

Atiku, in a press statement signed by his media office on Friday, said that the circulation of a photograph showing him carrying a banner asking for votes for Ribadu was a fraud done out of malice.

According to the statement, the banner in question was the banner he held in canvassing for votes for the Osun State governor, Rauf Aregbesola, during the last governorship election in Osun State last year.

Atiku said that the imperative of voting for the APC in the next line of elections in the country on April 11 is a virtue that he is firmly committed to, and to which he will urge all Nigerians to give unwavering support.

He said: “The purported photograph of me canvassing for votes for the PDP in the Adamawa governorship election is a fraud and done out of outright malice.

“I did not and will never call for support for any candidate of the PDP. The photograph that is being circulated is the Photoshop copy of my photograph that called for votes for the Osun State governor in the 2014 gubernatorial election in that state.

“My commitment to support and canvass for votes for the APC, not only in Adamawa State, but in all strata of elections across the country is a virtue that I will urge all Nigerians to follow,” he said.

  • APC faults Ribadu on change of C-in-C

APC faults Ribadu on change of C-in-C

THE All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Organisation has faulted statements credited to the Adamawa State governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (APC), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, that countries don’t change commander-in-chief during war.

The party’s Director of Strategic Communications, Mr. Dele Alake, said yesterday in Lagos that Ribadu’s statement flies in the face of history and concrete reality.

He said: “Contrary to Ribadu’s proposition, history and the concrete reality of the Nigerian situation have proved that the way out of the endemic insecurity in the country, especially the Northeast, is the change of the Commander-in-Chief. This is the change that the APC’s presidential flag bearer, General Muhammadu, eminently offers with his superior security strategy for Nigeria.  Indeed, the March 28 election is primarily about electing a competent commander-in-chief who is prepared to take ultimate responsibility for the war.”

The APC said the constitution says the welfare and security of the people shall be the primary purpose of government, but the tragic reality of Nigeria today is that the nation lacks a competent commander-in-chief to perform this constitutional duty.

“What we have on display is an astonishing abandonment of responsibility in which President Goodluck Jonathan literally cedes his powers to service chiefs. President Jonathan has demonstrated his unmitigated inadequacy to secure Nigeria.”

Noting the implication of Ribadu’s alibi for not changing the commander- in-chief, APC said many mature democracies would not have changed the party and persons running their administration, if this was true.

“If Ribadu’s alibi for not changing Jonathan as commander-in-chief is extrapolated, there should be no need for elections when a nation is at war. Yet, the fact of election assumes the possibility of changing the incumbent commander-in-chief.

“Former American President, George W. Bush, launched the war in Afghanistan and Iraq. If we go by Ribadu’s curious logic, Americans should have extended his tenure for a third term in 2008 when his time was up. Americans did not do such a thing. They rather elected another commander-in-chief on the platform of another party, President Barack Obama, to consummate the war. So, the war continued after Bush had ceased being commander-in-chief.”

The APC reminded Ribadu that even leaders who led their countries to victory in war have also been changed.

Citing the examples of the British Prime Minister Winston Churchill in Britain after World War II and President H. W. Bush in the United States after the Gulf War, the APC said the issues of  insecurity, corruption and the worsening state of the economy with the free fall of the Naira were germane to the outcome of the election.

It urged Ribadu and the leadership of the PDP to prepare for a free and fair election and abide by the verdict of the people.
