  • Rivers people don’t need governor to back Tinubu in 2027, says Wike

Rivers people don’t need governor to back Tinubu in 2027, says Wike

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, on Saturday said the people of Rivers State do not need a governor to mobilise support for President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 election.

Wike made the remark in Port Harcourt while commissioning the headquarters of the Rivers State Renewed Hope Ambassadors, which houses Majority FM 89.5, a situation room, office facilities and buses for the organisation.

He commended the coordinator of the Rivers State Renewed Hope Ambassadors, Desmond Akawor, for his mobilisation drive, adding that the state would work massively for the re-election of the President.

He said: “Desmond Akawor, you have shown enough capacity to mobilize, you have moved to all the nocks and crannies of Rivers to talk about Tinubu for President in 2027.

“I have said before that Rivers State is a no go area, and I want to say again that this State is totally for Tinubu. We have made sure that all the 23 local governments and zonal coordinators were inaugurated, that day Nigerians all over the world watched that Rivers State is a no go area.

“Today, the Renewed Hope Ambassadors Coordinator has also invited us to commission some vehicles that the headquarters of the Secretariat will use and to commission the Secretariat itself, this is the first of its kind in this part of the country.

“I challenge anybody, let them come to Rivers State and learn, our commitment is not by mouth, our commitment is not by newspaper, ours is by showing, that yes indeed, we are working for the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“We don’t need to have a governor to mobilize for Mr President, we don’t need, we have all it takes to be on our own, we have senators, assembly people, council chairman, National Assembly members, party chairmen of APC and PDP, we have mobilized ourselves to make commitment, if you say you are supporting somebody, there is no need for the person to bring his resources, you have to make commitment and this is what our leaders have done.

“Let me once again thank all of you for your commitment, you are the envy of every other state and they are watching you all over the place.

“In 2023, we came out without anybody pressuring us, without anybody influencing us, we took a decision, to the glory of God that decision is what we are enjoying today, and whether anybody likes it or not, 2027 when the President has shown interest that he will run, we have no choice than to continue to support Mr President.

“Mr coordinator, you have to start preparing to inaugurate ward and unit coordinators, it is very important, we must also take it down to the units, to go and talk to our people to continue to support Mr President, go and see the situation room, go and see the radio station, we are battle ready, there is nothing we can not do because unity is strength”.

Earlier, Ambassador Desmond Akawor, while welcoming the FCT Minister and people of Rivers, praised the Minister for offering leadership to the Rivers State Renewed Hope Ambassadors.

Akawor, who disclosed that he has placed people to man the Renewed Hope Ambassadors movement in all the 23 local governments of Rivers State, also made clarification on the style of politics of the Minister, calling it AI politics.

Police recover N2.3m ransom, burst kidnapping ring in Rivers

The Rivers State Police command has recovered N2.3m ransom and arrested two suspects involved in the kidnapping of a female and three others.

According to the police, the victims were abducted on January 19th, 2026, at Elele Waterside, Etche Local Government Area of the state.

The police public relations officer, CSP Grace Iringe-Koko, described the feat as a significant breakthrough in sustained efforts of the police to combat kidnapping and other criminal activities in Rivers.

Acting on credible intelligence, Operatives of the Command attached to the Anti-Cultism Unit (ACU), Emohua Annex, intercepted and arrested the suspects along Ozuzu/Apara Link Road, Etche LGA, on January 22, 2026, at about 2049hrs.

The statement identified the suspects as Abdullahi Ibrahim, aged 23, ‘m’ of Avara LGA, Nasarawa State, and Mohammed Hashim, aged 27, ‘m’ of Tafawa Balewa LGA, Bauchi State.

“Upon conducting a search of the suspects, they were found in possession of the sum of N2,383,000.00 as part of the ransom paid by the victims’ families”, the statement said.

During preliminary interrogation, the suspects were said to have confessed to the crime and further highlighted their involvement in a series of kidnappings, including the abduction of two other female victims from Akpoku Community, Etche LGA, on January 8, 2026.

The gang’s criminal activities were said to have led to the tragic killing of a youth member of the community, who attempted to pay a ransom of N3,800,000 to the kidnappers on January 13, 2026.

The statement added, “In spanning the scope of investigation, the arrested suspects led police operatives to their criminal hideouts, but the operatives were met with a strong resistance from other members of the gang and a fierce gun battle ensued between the operatives and the kidnappers, during which the suspects were fatally wounded, others escaped into the nearby bushes with varying degrees of bullet wounds”.

Exhibits recovered from the suspects were listed as one pump-action gun and the ransom money.

The statement said, “The Rivers State Police Command is intensifying efforts to apprehend the remaining suspects who are currently at large with their operational weapons.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga A. Adepoju, has commended the bravery and dedication of the Operatives involved in this daring operation and urged citizens to continue supporting the Police in the fight against crime.

“He further reiterated his unwavering commitment to ensuring that Rivers State remains a hostile environment for criminal elements, emphasizing that the police will leave no stone unturned in going after perpetrators of crime, and they will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. The command is appealing to the public to report to the Police, anyone receiving treatment for gunshot injuries in a suspicious manner”.

  • Ohaneze warns against excluding Igbo from Rivers politics

Ohaneze warns against excluding Igbo from Rivers politics

The Rivers State chapter of the Ohaneze Ndi-Igbo Worldwide has warned against excluding Igbo people from the politics of the state.

The chapter president of the group, Livingstone Wechie, in a statement to commemorate the World Igbo Adoration and Thanksgiving Day boasted that the Igbos had the largest voting bloc in the state.

Wechie said, “The Rivers State chapter President cautioned against any orientation that will isolate Ndi-Igbo from the politics or economy of Rivers State. It is not in dispute that Igbos have the largest voting block in Rivers state as well as dominate the economic lifeline of the state.

“We maintain that one of the most strategic ways to honour our fallen heroes and survivors of the civil war is to leverage on our entrepreneurial mastery and use our population to influence the politics of the state positively”.

He appealed to Igbo people to rethink their approach to politics saying the ethnic group possessed the potential to attain any political height of interest in the country.

Wechie called on Igbos in Rivers State to see the current trend and business space in the state as a golden opportunity to reposition themselves in the Nigerian project.

He said: “It is no doubt that the Igbo question is still unanswered by the Nigerian state and remains the main unresolved question in contemporary black Africa today.

“We seize this medium to thank God for making Igbos great. Igbos are arguably the largest black stock on Earth. The slave trade escalated our global spread.

“Calabar was the largest slave port in Africa and Igbos were the highest victims exported to various countries which is why we have indigenous Igbos in many countries of the world. This to us is a strength and not a disadvantage. We urge government at all levels to engage Ndi-Igbo for a purposeful future”.

Wechie sued for peace in Rivers saying the state remained the safest haven for Igbo investment.

“As we invite Ndi-Igbo from all over the world to pour in their highest investment into Rivers State because the Atlantic is open to us, we assure the government of Rivers State of the greatest support of Igbos for the development of the State”, he said.

  • Ex-Niger Delta agitator urges Tinubu to intervene in rivers political crisis

Ex-Niger Delta agitator urges Tinubu to intervene in rivers political crisis

Former Niger Delta freedom fighter, General Endurance Amagbein, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene in the ongoing political dispute between Rivers State Governor, Sim Fubara, and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, to restore peace and unity.

In a statement issued in Abuja, Amagbein warned that the crisis could escalate if urgent steps are not taken, stressing the need for timely political reconciliation to prevent further instability.

He said the Rivers political situation has reached a stage where only President Tinubu can broker an amicable resolution that would allow the parties to reconcile and work together ahead of the 2027 elections.

Amagbein, popularly known as “Adaka Boro the Second,” also appealed to Governor Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to set aside their differences and adopt a reconciliatory approach in resolving the crisis.

He argued that the rift is being exploited by individuals pursuing personal interests, diverting public attention and resources away from governance and development in Rivers State.

According to him, resolving the impasse would help refocus attention on critical sectors of the state and curb actions that may undermine public interest.

“Wike and Fubara should join forces to promote President Tinubu’s 2027 agenda, and not to allow crisis-mongers to destabilize Rivers State.”

“Some of these crisis mongers are not from Rivers State, but they have infiltrated the system and positioned their agents in the politics sector of Rivers State, whom they are using to add fuel to the fire.”

“It’s about time critical stakeholders stepped in to preach peace to all the parties involved in this war.”

“I also want to call on King Asari Dokubo and King Ateke Tom to be vigilant and study the situation keenly and not allow anybody from another state to destabilize their domains,” he said.

Amagbein also cautioned Ijaw youths against taking sides with either Wike or Fubara, as their differences can be resolved, but rather support the interest of Rivers State for the overall good of the people.

He said supporting one side of the divide against the other will not result in any good because the impasse is a mere misunderstanding between a father and his son.

According to him, “Some persons are planning to use this crisis as an avenue to frustrate Tinubu’s chances of winning the 2027 presidential elections in Rivers State, and so Wike and Fubara should reconcile and come to terms to put the enemies of the Tinubu Government to shame.”

Amagbein said for some people, the only way they benefit from any government is through crisis, and that is very common in Rivers State.

He said the crisis has lingered because of people who don’t mean well for both Wike and Fubara, who are close to them, giving them evil counsel, rather than preaching peace.

He also urged the Rivers State House of Assembly to give peace a chance for the overall good of the citizens.

  • Fubara never removed Tinubu’s portrait from Rivers Govt House, says Rivers govt

Fubara never removed Tinubu’s portrait from Rivers Govt House, says Rivers govt

The Rivers state government debunked claims by the state’s chapter of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) that Governor Siminalayi Fubara dismantled the official portrait of President Bola Tinubu from Government House.

A statement signed by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information and Communications, Dr Honour Sirawoo, said the government had no policy, directive, or intention that disrespected Tinubu or the authority of the Federal Government.

Sirawoo said, “As a matter of fact, the State Government and the Governor, His Excellency Sir Siminalayi Fubara, currently enjoy a more robust and collaborative relationship with the Federal Government, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and the Renewed Hope Agenda that is yielding positive impacts on the lives of the citizenry and the state.”

He insisted that the insinuation that the governor acted out of “ingratitude” or “disrespect” was misleading, irresponsible, inflammatory, and unsupported by verifiable facts and should be discountenanced.

Sirawoo said it was also regrettable that a body that was expected to promote youth unity and peace would resort to incendiary language, personal attacks, and unsubstantiated claims capable of heating up the polity at a time Rivers required calm, dialogue, and responsible leadership.

Sirawoo said, “The Rivers State Government, therefore, calls on well-meaning members of the public, particularly our esteemed and hardworking Youths to disregard and dissociate themselves from elements that are bent on driving divisive rhetoric and falsehood in politicising matters.

“Rivers State belongs to all of us. Political differences must never be allowed to override truth, civility, and the collective desire for peace and progress.

“Members of the public are urged to be wary of inflammatory statements and not give vent to those fifth columnists in their dubious agenda to cause division.”

FG takes custody of arms surrendered by 80 repentant militants in Cross River

The Nigerian Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW), South-South Zone, has formally absorbed a cache of arms and ammunition surrendered by 80 repentant militants in Cross River State.

The agency said the move marks another significant turning point in the Cross River state’s drive to consolidate peace and security.

The weapons were handed over to the Centre on Monday by the Office of the Cross River State Security Adviser, following the successful disarmament of militants who had operated within the creeks of Calabar and Akpabuyo Local Government Areas.

Speaking to journalists in Calabar after receiving the arms, the Zonal Director of NCCSALW, South-South Zone, Alex Inemah Ebimiebo, commended the administration of Governor Bassey Edet Otu, for giving priority and attention to security matters, particularly the fight against the proliferation of arms and other weapons in the state.

Ebimiebo described the development as a testament to the effectiveness of the state government’s peace-building initiatives and collaborative security framework, noting that Cross River continues to stand out as one of the safest and most peaceful states in the country.

He also lauded the State Security Adviser, Major General Okoi Ubi Obono (rtd), for his strategic leadership and strong collaboration with security agencies, which he said has translated into concrete gains in maintaining peace and stability across the state.

He called for sustained synergy among all components of the state’s security architecture to preserve and deepen the prevailing peace.

The NCCSALW Zonal Director disclosed that the Centre would immediately commence the statutory process for the destruction and disposal of the weapons received, in line with national and international best practices.

He further urged Cross Riverians and residents of the state to shun acts capable of threatening public peace, while reaffirming the Centre’s commitment to curbing the spread of illicit arms in Cross River State and the entire South-South Zone.

The arms surrendered by the militants were earlier laid down under Operation OKWOK at the Atimbo Rear Area, in an exercise coordinated by the 13_Brigade of the Nigerian Army in collaboration with the Cross River State Government.

The Nation observes that the repentant militants, drawn from two camps, voluntarily embraced the state’s amnesty programme, surrendering assorted weapons including rifles, guns, ammunition, explosives, speedboats and other military hardware.

Representing the State Security Adviser at the event, Inspector Adoga David assured that the Otu-led administration would not relent in its commitment to safeguarding lives and property in the state.

He noted that the government’s prompt response to security concerns and sustained support for security agencies have continued to boost morale and yield positive outcomes in the maintenance of peace.

He described the ban as total, saying it applied at all times and must be enforced 24 hours, day and night every week, including weekends and public holidays.

The council boss insisted that there would be no exceptions, waivers, or designated trading periods within the affected areas.

“No one is allowed to trade in the affected areas at any time. This decisive action has become necessary, following persistent disregard for council directives by some individuals who have continued to engage in illegal trading activities within this corridor.

Worlu said traders, hawkers and roadside vendors operating within the affected areas must vacate immediately.

He added: “Any defaulter will be arrested and prosecuted, in accordance with the law, without exception. • Rivers of free money

    Rivers of free money

This writer believes that some privileged persons within and outside Rivers State benefit from the instability always plaguing the state. Otherwise, how does one explain the resurgence of the political warfare between forces loyal to Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Minister Nyesom Wike, few months after the state of emergency was lifted? The general belief was that the state of emergency provided an opportunity for the combatants and their foot soldiers to reach a political détente.

But alas, as Chinua Achebe said, in Arrow of God, “for when we see a bird dancing in the middle of the pathway, we must know that its drummer is in the nearby bush.” But who are the drummers for the combatants in Rivers State who must truly be in the nearby bush? For this writer, the drummers are those seeking access to what I call the “free money” in the state. For Wike, it is those who want a share of the humongous N600 billion, left behind by the departed sole administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd).

Before Fubara took refuge in the All Progressive Congress (APC), his supporters had alleged that the fight between Wike and Fubara, was because of the former’s interest in controlling that “free money”. While the Rivers State 2025 budget of N1.846 trillion is enormous, there is a huge chance that the resources which causes the intractable debacles dating back to the beginning of this republic, may actually be the ones unbudgeted for.

Since the return of democracy in 1999, Rivers State has shown itself as the richest state with pots of “free money”. The evidence in support of that claim, is monumentally abundant. The first governor 1999-2007, Peter Odili, was given the acronym, “Donatus”, because he always donated handsomely at every public event he was invited to. To show that the money in question was not mere small change for donations, he became the biggest financier of the PDP in that era.

But for former president, Olusegun Obasanjo’s alleged interference, Odili, who ran the costliest campaign to succeed Obasanjo, had enough resources to appropriate the presidential ticket in 2007. The man, to whom Odili handed over, Rotimi Amechi, went on to repeat the same feat when he backed the election of late president, Muhammadu Buhari, against President Goodluck Jonathan. As Rivers State governor, he was reputed as one of the biggest financers of the election of the former president.

To show that his resources is as deep as the oil wells in the state he governed, the former governor and later Minister for Transport, successfully ran a well-oiled campaign during the APC presidential primary. He came second behind the winner, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who went ahead to win the presidential election.  Amaechi, was succeeded by Wike, who became a master class intervener in strategic capital projects, of national importance. Hardly ever worried about the flow of resources, he took many gigantic federal projects.

Wike, built massive infrastructure for a new Nigeria Law School, in Rivers State. He built houses for judges of federal courts, amongst several of such projects. Like his predecessors, Rivers money also flowed towards the presidential campaigns, during his tenure. First, he was reputed to have sponsored his former friend, Aminu Tambuwal, against Atiku Abubakar, in the Peoples Democratic Party primaries, in 2019. When he completed his second tenure, he sought the presidential crown for himself, in 2023, and if we are to believe Dele Momodu, he outspent the doyen of presidential election contests in Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar.

When Wike’s ambition was blocked at the PDP primary, which was as contentious, as a presidential campaign, Wike engaged his financial vehicle in a reverse gear, driving furiously and desperately, as if on a forward speed gear. The success of APC, which he supported, in 2023 election, earned him the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. And with the power and influence he holds, he is more or less the most dreaded political leader in Rivers State. Presently, Wike’s eyes are on the 2027 election, not as a candidate, but as a supporter of President Tinubu.

Obviously, Fubara joined APC, the president’s party, to counter the enormous political weight of Wike. But, he did not take into consideration that Wike’s men may have planted several mines in APC, just as he did in PDP, awaiting Fubara to make his entry. Despite his entry into APC, the state lawmakers who had earlier joined APC, have started an impeachment proceeding against the governor. Thinking it may help, Fubara’s men threw mud on the lawmakers accusing them of helping themselves with Rivers “free money”, while the sole administrator held sway.

Many presidential election pundits have argued that any presidential candidate who wants to be successful at the polls must have his eyes trained on Rivers, Kano and Lagos states. While the general attention is on the enormous registered voters that the states have, the more underlining factor may be the enormous financial resources the three states boast of. While their various state budgets show their enormous financial powers, the unbudgeted financial resources, may be the critical factor which contenders seek to have influence over, by controlling the states.

The influence of the three states extend far beyond the states. Recall that while Wike was in power, as Rivers State governor, he had enormous influence in the elections in the entire South-south. Former governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki confessed that it was Wike who made his reelection possible after he defected to PDP, haven fallen out with his sponsors in APC. Wike, as governor of Rivers State, was also influential in who won election in Bayelsa State.

Sadly, for Fubara, Wike had used the last local government election to cement the rings he ran around Fubara in Rivers State and he showed what the future may look like, during his recent thank you tour of the councils. Wike, also has the state legislators firmly with him, and even the flicker of light for Fubara, when four members of the state House of Assembly demurred about the impeachment proceedings, dimmed almost immediately. Not surprisingly, the 25 present member legislators are presently in one accord that Fubara has committed gross misconducts, as envisaged by section 188 of the 1999 constitution (as amended).

Fubara, may need the help of President Tinubu to stop the impeachment proceedings, even though he is hoping to use the courts to emasculate the legislators. But, this writer wonders what the court would say to justify denying the legislators the power to engage in a constitutional process. And to compound the matter for Fubara, he may have engaged in several constitutional infringements in the fights that led to the declaration of state of emergency in the state and he can still be punished for those infringements.

This writer wonders why Fubara can’t play politics to survive, or perhaps summon the Rivers free money, to wash away his sins.

  • Rivers crisis: PDP stakeholders drag party chair, RSIEC to court over LG candidates’ nominations

Rivers crisis: PDP stakeholders drag party chair, RSIEC to court over LG candidates’ nominations

The fresh political crisis rocking Rivers state has recorded its first court case following the decision of some stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to challenge the nomination of candidates for the last local government election.

The PDP won three local government areas, Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni, Port Harcourt City, and Obio-Akpor councils revered for their significance in determining electoral victories.

However, three stakeholders of the PDP in the state dragged the state’s factional chairman, Aaron Chukwuemeka, Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), the PDP, and the government of Rivers State to the state High Court, challenging the nomination of PDP chairmen, their deputies, and councillors for the elections.

The claimants, Enyi Uchechukwu, Wisdom Kalio, and Uche Amadi, in an originating summon asked the court to determine whether Chukwuemeka, whose congress that brought him had been nullified, could validly submit a list of candidates to RSIEC for the just concluded LGA elections.

They argued that the congress where Chukwuemeka was elected had been set aside by a subsisting judgment of the Rivers State High Court.

They further asked the court to determine, among other reliefs, whether the PDP could be said to have presented a valid list of candidates to RSIEC through Chukwuemeka for the candidates to have taken part in the elections of 30th August, 2025.

The claimants demanded a declaration that the PDP’s ward, local government area, and state elective congresses conducted on July 27, 2024, and August 10, 2024, were a nullity, having been set aside by the Rivers State High Court.

They maintained that Chukwuemeka, being a product of the said nullified congresses, lacked the competence or capacity to conduct any of the party’s primaries and/or to submit any list of candidates.

The claimants also asked for an order of perpetual injunction restraining the defendants, by themselves, their privies, agents, assigns, administrators, and/or howsoever so named, from interfering with and/or further interfering with the PDP’s internal affairs about the nomination and presentation of candidates for elective positions.

When the matter came up in court, the claimants’ lawyer, Glory Chizim-Chinda, orally applied for a motion for substituted service on the second and third defendants.

The presiding judge, Justice Stephen Jumbo, granted the application and ordered that the processes be served on the state secretariat of PDP on Aba road.

Justice Jumbo, before adjourning to 9th of February, 2026, for application for joinder, directed the claimants’ lawyer to serve the processes on the chairmen, their deputies, and the councillors of Port Harcourt City, Obio-Akpor, and Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni local government areas.
