Rivers: We‘ll correct leadership mistake in 2027 – Wike

Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, says the ‘leadership mistake’ in Rivers will be corrected in 2027.

Wike stated this during a ‘thank you’ visit to the people of Khana in Bori, Khana Local Government Area of Rivers.

According to him, leaders are elected to represent the will of the people, and not for personal agenda.

“We will not make the same mistake again at the state level in 2027, but we will talk about it later when the time comes.

“Just follow your leaders. Anywhere you see them going, that is where we are going,” he said.

He stated that he was not in the community for politics but to thank the people for standing with him and President Bola Tinubu.

Wike noted that the people of Khana took a risk and supported Tinubu in 2023 when others were afraid to do so.

“During the turbulent period, Khana stood with us and now you have benefitted, from good roads to university of environment, among others, because of the love of Mr President.

“So many appointments have come to Ogoniland and more are still coming,” he said.

The minister pointed out that the Rivers people would no longer vote based on party, but based on ‘family’ for the development of the state under Tinubu’s ‘Renewed Hope Agenda’.

Earlier, Rep. Dumnamene Dekor (APC – Khana) commended Wike and Tinubu for making Ogoniland the pride of the nation.

Dekor thanked the former governor for visiting communities in Rivers, stressing that people were ready to do what he asked and go where he wanted them to go.

“We are proud to be associated with you, and whatever you asked us to do, we shall do and wherever you asked us to go, we shall go,” he said.

He assured Wike that the lawmakers from Rivers had surrendered their mandate to Tinubu.

Also, Mrs Barile Nwakoh (APC Khana I State Constituency), who spoke on behalf of women in the area, thanked Wike for remembering the people of Khana.

Nwakoh said that the minister was receiving enormous support in Rivers because of his goodwill, sincerity and love for the people.

She said that the women of Khana were ready to vote for Tinubu if he decided to contest for second tenure.

*We are ready to work for Tinubu. Please tell Mr President that we are here for him and ready to work for his re-election,” she said.

Similarly, Chairman of Khana Local Council, Dr Thomas Bariere, commended Wike for being there for the people of the area, adding that when the right people occupied offices, good things happen.

“Since our support for President Tinubu, things have become better for the people of Khana.

“You have supported everything good for the people of Khana and we are very grateful for this,” Bariere said.

He assured Wike of the continued support of the people of the council area.

Speaking while inspecting the site at the weekend, Chief Anthony Waadah, Gbenemene of Legbo Kingdom and President of the Ogoni Association of Business Owners in America (OABOA) described the disaster as “total and unacceptable.”

Waadah appealed to the Federal Government to clean up the mess caused by many years of oil exploration before talking about resuming fresh oil production from Ogoniland.

Pointing at the spill site, Waadah said: “Even animals are dying here. How can humans survive in these conditions? Yet the federal government, the presidency, and the Minister of Environment appear unconcerned. This is not charity — this is justice we are demanding.”

Paramount Ruler of Kpean, Lucky Gbene-Ewoh, expressed deep frustration over the fresh oil spills in the area.

He said:  “We cannot go fishing again. We cannot farm. Our people cry every day. The NNPCL confirmed equipment failure and corrosion, yet they failed to act for over two months despite promises from the federal and state governments”.

Gbene-Ewoh disclosed that their repeated petitions, letters, and visits to Abuja were ignored leaving the community in continued peril.

“The silence is deafening. We need urgent intervention before more lives are lost,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of the youth, Lemii Petaba, Kpean Youth President, said, “We are angry because the federal government continues to blame our people for this disaster. They claim third-party intervention, but they refused to give us a voice. Our rivers, farms, and farmlands have been destroyed. We will not sit idly by while our community is neglected.”

Let’s forego discord in Rivers, embrace dialogue, says Fubara

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has called on all stakeholders in the state to forego discord and embrace dialogue in the interest of the state.

Fubara, in his Christmas message to Rivers people, insisted that only a united and stable state could birth development and progress in Rivers.

The governor, in the message he personally signed, said, “Our collective progress is anchored on unity and harmony. I remain steadfast in my commitment to the Rivers’ first agenda, driven by peace and dedicated to inclusive development. Only in a united and stable Rivers State can we build the infrastructure, strengthen the economy, and secure the prosperous future that every citizen deserves.

“Let us therefore replace discord with dialogue and choose understanding over division. I also urge all residents to remain security-conscious, as safeguarding our state is a shared responsibility that begins with vigilance, cooperation, mutual respect, and support.”

While congratulating the people for witnessing what he referred to as this beautiful season of hope, renewal, and thanksgiving, the governor called for religious tolerance in the state.

He said, “Regardless of our individual faiths, let us uphold religious tolerance and recommit ourselves to the noble responsibility of being our brother’s keeper, even amid the socio-economic challenges of our time.

As you celebrate this season, may your homes be filled with joy and your hearts overflow with love that transcends ethnic and religious boundaries.”

Rivers unveils measures to boost ease of doing business, restore investor confidence

The Rivers State Investment Promotion Agency (RSIPA) has introduced new measures aimed at enhancing the ease of doing business (EoDB) in the state, in a bid to restore the confidence of the business community.

Speaking at the breakout session of RSIPA during the ongoing 18th Port Harcourt International Trade Fair at the Obi Wali International Cultural Centre, Director-General Chamberlain Peterside highlighted the agency’s plans to reposition the state as a prime investment destination.

Mayor of Housing, My-ACE China, expressed support for RSIPA’s initiatives but emphasized the need to first safeguard existing businesses in the state before promoting new investments.

RSIPA, alongside top investors and business regulators at both local and national levels, called for coordinated strategies to address what they described as “Perception Risks” that have historically painted the state as a challenging environment for business.

Dr. Peterside acknowledged past challenges where regulatory hurdles had made investment difficult but stressed that the agency is now focused on actionable solutions and tangible results, in line with its board’s mission. He concluded by declaring that Rivers State is “back to business.”

“We are not naïve to believe that either by some form of magic we can suddenly turn the fortunes of the State and attract all the investments we desire.

“Our task is no mean feat. We are dealing with the perception risk that over several years branded the state as unsafe. We are also faced with the challenges of dealing with the lack of cohesion amongst MDAs, policy inconsistencies, multiple taxation, incessant harassment by miscreants, red tape and delays in obtaining operating permits, high cost of operations and opaque public sector.” he stated.

Peterside said the agency was not there to dwell on challenges but to focus on action, solutions, and results. He said it is about listening to the investors in the field and ensuring that MDAs were carried along, hence the imperative for the setting up of our One-Stop-Center (OSC).”

He called it the practical game-changer never experienced before in the annals of Rivers State.

Speaking on how the plans of the investment promotion agency can materialize, the Mayor of Housing who was presented at the event as a star investor and keen promoter of Rivers State reputation, advised that an enabling law should replace the Executive Order that established the Rivers State Investment Promotion Agency. This, he said, is to insulate the Agency from political instability and remove fear in the minds of investors about its sustainability.

The Mayor of Housing ( A real Estate Investor) cautioned the protection precedes promotion, thus, businesses in the state desire protection before anything else.

He said Local Direct Investment (LDIs) is what attracts and promotes Foreign Direct Investment (FDIs), citing an African proverb that says; ‘It is the rat at home that reveals to the one in the bush that there is fish in the kitchen’.

‎China said he discovered opportunities in Port Harcourt when he arrived there city and found it was locked out by information.

‎The CEO of the Housing and Construction Mayor Limited, owners of the Alesa Highlands Sustainable Green Smart City, said that Port Harcourt is like a business empire under lock and key because it is not protecting it’s own and also not promoting it’s own enough for investors to come in.

‎In the area of land documentation and inventory, China urged Rivers State Government to borrow a leave from Abuja and adopt the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in dealing with land and property registration and documentation for ease of doing business by elimination of land fraud.

‎He said Lagos understood the power of business information. “This creates the impression that if you are not doing it in Lagos, you are not doing it in Africa.”

“So, I can assure you that the complaints you have raised particularly the need to expand the facility in line with your projection for next year have been noted. Secretary to the State Government, please take note of that. The few repairs that were also mentioned, and other things that need to be sorted out, should be scoped properly and brought to my attention.”

He disclosed that 2,586 corps members were currently undergoing the 2025 Batch C orientation programme in Rivers State, making the state the fourth most preferred deployment destination adding that 8,349 indigenes of Rivers were also serving in various states.

“It goes to show that corps members are welcomed here. The security of lives and property we have in this state gives confidence to the parents and guardians of corps members posted here.”

He thanked the governor for the state’s support including land for residence and plans to improve camp facilities.
