  • Rivers APC: no elections without our candidates

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Governorship Campaign Organisation in Rivers State has said there will be no elections if the party and its candidates were not listed in the ballot papers.

The organisation also accused chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, of working with Governor Nyesom Wike to frustrate the party.

A statement by the Director of Strategic Communication, Tonye Princewill Campaign Organisation, said Prof. Yakubu was working with Wike to frustrate the people’s will.

He said: “Though the election postponement is not a surprise, I still expected the INEC Chairman to stubbornly push on and try to force through the elections regardless. I still see disaster come Saturday. Unless we’re on the ballot, the election won’t be smooth anywhere…”

  • Amaechi blasts Wike

The leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State and Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Amaechi, has admonished the state governor, Nyesom Wike, to accept his failure as the chief security officer of the state and quit trying to pin acts of violence on the APC.

Amaechi spoke at a press briefing in Port Harcourt, Thursday, addressing Wike’s “malignant and calculated outburst,” alleging that the APC intends to visit violence on the state.

Governor Wike had in his state broadcast on Thursday evening accused Amaechi and the APC of plotting to incite violence in the state. Wike also tried to make political capital of the stampede that led to the death of some persons at the APC presidential rally in Port Harcourt on Tuesday.

Amaechi said: “I listened to our governor today. Again, like the child he is, rant and say we intend to visit violence on the people. All of you who have worked with me would know that I don’t like violence because if you kill someone, you cannot replace him, you can’t bring him back to life. You can replace houses; you can replace cars and all that. You certainly can’t replace life.

“We lost 15 persons. I was touring people’s houses, trying to identify with their pain. If the governor can remember when President Goodluck Jonathan came here and we lost 23 Nigerians in Rivers State, the same stampede, I couldn’t eat. I was watching them take lunch, I couldn’t, I was crying because those 23 persons are gone whether for good or bad just like these 15 persons will not come back. So I’ve never and I will never support violence. But I don’t also support injustice.

Amaechi wondered why “Wike is trying so hard to avoid elections and enlisting different institutions to aid his cause. He also called on the INEC to exonerate itself from being accused of trying to help the PDP by doing the needful and obeying the stay of execution order by the Court of Appeal and relist Rivers APC and its candidates for the elections.

“An example is the fact that there is a stay of execution granted by the Court of Appeal in Port Harcourt. Just because the INEC chairman was the head of TETFUND under Wike when he was a Minister of Education, he has refused to implement that judgment. He doesn’t have the right to choose which one to implement and which one not to implement.

“Obviously, he’s among the institutions trying to assist Wike become a second-term governor without election. We understand, but again, we believe in the judiciary, the uprightness of the judiciary. I hope so, and you heard the President when he said that the injustice will be addressed.

“Why is Wike avoiding an election if he is that popular; why is Wike using Magnus Abe to avoid an election? That’s the question to ask. But like I told Rivers people, it is not over until it is over. We are going to go out on Saturday to vote President Buhari. If INEC decides to obey the stay of execution, then we are ready for the legislative elections on Saturday.

“But if the INEC chairman will not obey the stay of execution because he was a worker under Wike in the Ministry of Education, then so be it. We’ll continue to pursue the rights of the people to choose who their leaders will be. You can’t force a leader on people,” Amaechi said.

On the issue of violence, Amaechi continued, “Wike talked about violence. During my time as governor, you were free to go out at night. I drove out with just one car at night and went back home safe, but now as a minister I can’t drive around without loads of security and he is happy to be a governor in that kind of state. As a governor, no minister can threaten me, so if he feels threatened, he should stop me. He has the executive powers to. “

He further said: “Now nobody has been arrested because of election. In 2015, all APC leaders were in detention. The agent of the president, Emma Deeyah, just came out of the INEC office to buy food, they took him away. We thought he had been kidnapped only to be brought out after the day of election and that was when we knew police took him.

“Now, let Wike say if anybody has been arrested since we came in. It shows that the government of President Buhari understands what rule of law is, not rule of man. So tell Wike that I’m enjoying his fear; he’s scared. It’s easy to be a coward. I’ve governed this state before. All of you know I’m not a coward”.

  • Four feared dead at Port Harcourt rally

….14 persons were brought in dead, UPTH spokesman insists

A HUGE rally to push President Muhammadu Buhari’s bid for a second term ended yesterday on a tragic note in Rivers State – four persons died in a stampede.

Many were injured and rushed to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH), which is close to the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, venue of the rally.

President Buhari, who got to the stadium at 2:32 p.m., rounded off his speech at 3:16 p.m., but most APC members and supporters had started leaving the main bowl before the national anthem was sung to end the event.

It was learnt that when the crowd was leaving the stadium through the gate marked: “Pedestrians Only”, policemen opened only one side of the big gate, which was not enough for the surging sea of heads.

When our reporter got to the scene at 4:50 p.m., three aged women and a middle-aged man were seen lying dead. A man, who was revived after fainting, blamed it all on ‘overzealous’ policemen who, according to him, did not leave the two sides of the gate open.

Two UPTH ambulances moved injured persons and the bodies to the Federal Teaching Hospital.

When contacted at 7:12 p.m., UPTH spokesman Kem Daniel-Elebiga confirmed that 14 persons were brought to the hospital dead. Three were being attended to at the casualty unit, more were being rushed in, he said.

Police spokesman Nnamdi Omoni, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), said Police Commissioner Usman Belel had ordered an investigation into the stampede. Anybody found culpable is to be arrested and prosecuted.

“The Area Commander, who led the police team, informed me that he saw four bodies and four injured persons, who were moved to UPTH in two ambulances belonging to the hospital (UPTH). For now, I am not aware of higher casualty figure, but the thorough investigation ordered by Rivers State Commissioner of Police will reveal further details,” DSP Omoni said.

But the UPTH spokesman insisted that 14 persons were brought in dead to the hospital.

On Monday, the presidential candidate of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, and many members of the party were at the stadium. APC leaders said holding their rally the next day was to use their brooms, the symbol of the party, to sweep away the PDP, its candidates and members.

This is the President’s second visit to the state since May 29, 2015 when he mounted the saddle. His first visit was when he inaugurated the International Terminal of Port Harcourt International Airport in Omagwa.

At yesterday’s rally were the National Chairman of APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole; the Director-General of the Buhari/Osinbajo Re-election Campaign Organisation, Rotimi Amaechi, a former Rivers State Governor; ex-Senate Minority Leader Godswill Akpabio; Rivers governorship candidate of APC Tonye Cole and his running mate, Chief Victor Giadom as well as the state chairman of APC, Ojukaye Flag-Amachree; among other leaders of the party.

Buhari promised to remain steadfast and consistent in fighting corruption; stressing that Nigeria is one and would remain one. “I will not preside over a government that will cheat or abuse trust of Nigerians”, he said.

The President went on: “I stand here to express my most sincere gratitude to you for being here since early this (yesterday) morning. Thank you very much indeed. I am also here to congratulate you for your restraint. It is absolutely clear and I am very pleased that you are responding to whatever the leadership of APC agrees to do within this political system.

“I am very very disturbed by the decision (of the court) that we (APC’s candidates in Rivers) are not allowed to participate in some of the processes. I have no doubt I got elected, but I have to respect the institutions that I inherited. I assure you and I recommend that you should be patient and resolute. We are going to assure that justice is done in this country.

“When we came in, in 2015, you knew the condition we found this country. The people of the Northeast are the witnesses of the improvement affected in the security of the country. In the economy, God has blessed us. In the last three rainy seasons, government made fertiliser available at half the price it used to be. People went back to the farm, they did not regret it and we have virtually achieved food security. The hundreds and millions of dollars we used to spend on rice, we save it now for infrastructure.

“About fighting corruption, we are going to remain steadfast and consistent. I like to ask you for your patience and understanding. The fundamental thing is that Nigeria is one and it will remain one. And we will do justice to all and sundry. It is our duty. I assure you that I will not preside over a government that will cheat and abuse the trust of Nigerians. I will be accountable to God and to you for my performance as the President of this country.

“I like you to please bear with me that I am going to be steadfast. I am going to see that you are respected. You have one vote, I have one vote, as the President of this country. What I will do, I will make sure, through the armed forces and law enforcement agencies that Nigerians are respected, they are allowed to vote for those they like across the parties, in whatever constituency. So, please have faith that I am going to be fair to all. I will not allow anybody or any institution to intimidate any constituency in this country. I thank you very much and I respect your loyalty.”

Oshiomhole appreciated APC members for their steadfastness.

He said: “Let me begin by appreciating the fighting spirit of the APC people and the APC supporters in Rivers State. I am extremely impressed that in spite of all the efforts to demoralise you, to weaken your spirit, to create doubt and to compel you to wallow in self pity, you are here this (yesterday) afternoon on your feet, as if nothing has happened, to make the statement that you are not weakened by the forces of enemy, whether from within or without. I salute your fighting spirit and I salute your vision.

“These are tempting moments when men of little hearts will give up, as if this is the end of the world. When I stepped into the stadium and saw this crowd, I said what would it have been, if we were here much earlier or better still, if what we had in Abuja today (yesterday) was not the case, but let me say to you, the attitude that you have displayed this (yesterday) afternoon is the appropriate one.

“Those who may be happy, who may be smiling that they will become what they do not deserve, they will find that the downfall of a man is not the end of his life. I have seen those who seemed to smile too early in the morning, they end up crying much later in the night.”

Amaechi, however, declared that he and other APC members in Rivers would battle Governor Nyesom Wike of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the last.

The minister said: “Whatever PDP does in Rivers State, we are equal to the task. I am not going to Abuja again. We have a governor (Wike) who will try to negotiate with us that he will support us for presidency, but we should give him governor. He is afraid. We will battle him to the last. I have not spoken like this before. On Saturday (February 16), they should get ready. We are ready for them. They used federal and state institutions against us. They killed APC people and cut off their necks everyday. The right to choose our leaders to stop the killings, they got a state high court judge to give judgment.

“Eighty per cent of those who have made successes in Rivers State politics passed through me. Wike was my chief of staff. I made him chairman of council (Obio/Akpor). I nominated him as a minister. When he saw Goodluck (former President Jonathan), he betrayed me. He betrayed serially everybody he met, including Senators. After you finish helping them, after praying for them, they go and betray you for a pot of porridge. Saturday is our day.”

To Akpabio, the crowd was clear evidence that APC was waxing stronger in the state.

The former governor of Akwa Ibom State urged Rivers people and other Nigerians to massively vote for President Buhari to “take Nigeria to the next level”.

Cole, co-founder of the Sahara Group, described Rivers APC as “strong, alive and would not die”.

Flag-Amachree reiterated that there was a deliberate conspiracy to disenfranchise APC’s candidates and the electorate from participating in the elections. The people will not agree, he said.

  • Navy records 34 piracy, 20 sea robbery attacks last year

Thirty-four piracy and 20 sea robbery attacks were recorded in the nation’s maritime domain last year, the Nigerian Navy (NN) said on Monday.

Also 46 vessels, barges and 31 big wooden boats were impounded within the period under review, said Chief of Training and Operations (CTOPS) Rear Admiral Mackson Kadiri.

Kadiri spoke in Abuja at a briefing with reporters were the navy’s scorecard for 2018 was presented.

He noted that various exercises being organised by the NN had led to the reduction in maritime crimes especially piracy, adding that there was no attack in June and Agust, while one was recorded each in July, October and December last year.

He said: “The recorded cases of attacks on shipping have been mainly along the coasts of Bayelsa, Delta and Rivers States. The few cases of attacks on shipping are indicative of the efforts of the NN.

“It is also gratifying to report that there has been significant reduction in the cases of attack on Oil and Gas Installations (OGI). The few attacks recorded took place in the swamp/onshore areas, with none reported against OGI located offshore during the year in focus.

“As records indicate, from January to December 2018, a total of 34 pirates’ attacks on shipping were reported with nine successful and 25 unsuccessful. Furthermore, a total of 20 sea robbery attacks were reported in 2018 out of which six were successful and 14 unsuccessful.

“Since the inception of Operation TSARE TEKU in April 2016, there has been drastic reduction in reported incidents of attack with even fewer successful attacks. Additionally, a total of 46 vessels and barges were arrested for involvement in maritime crimes during the period under review.

“These are indications that the operation has contributed to a significant improvement in security of shipping in Nigeria’s maritime environment.”

According to Kadiri, the NN was in the process of rounding up the fifth phase of Exercise TSARE TEKU and would flag-off the sixth.

Since most of the attacks at sea originate from land, Kadiri said the NN had since March 2016, emplaced a Choke Point Management and Control Regime which allows the deployment of armed personnel to strategic locations within creeks in houseboat.

“So far, nine houseboats otherwise known as Naval Security Stations (NSS) have been deployed where crude oil theft and illegal refining activities are known to be prevalent. More locations have been identified for deployment of NSSs in this 2019.

“Several arrests and destruction of barges and other vessels used for conveying stolen crude oil and illegally refined products have been made through this Choke Point Management regime. For instance, a total of 31 large wooden boats were arrested for involvement in illegalities in 2018 while 176 large wooden boats were destroyed within the same period.”

Highlighting other exercises carried out by the NN and their gains, Kadiri said Operation River Sweep conducted mostly in Delta and Rivers States destroyed 637 illegal refining sites, apprehended 104 speed boats and 340 suspects last year.

“In summary, the quantity of crude oil lost as a result of illegal refining activities in 2018 is about 277,040 barrels, while about 23.1 Million litres of AGO, 212,610 litres of PMS and 1.2 Million litres of DPK were also lost,” said Kadiri.

The achievements notwithstanding, Kadiri stated the need for more funding for the NN in view of various ship rehabilitation/repair programmes geared towards operational availability of capital ships to enable the service meet its statutory responsibilities. He said the NN would require more Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs), helicopters and predator drones as immediate intervention.

“While noting the nexus between the successes and the availability of adequate resources, including international and regional collaboration, there is still need to address some outstanding issues and capability gaps affecting NN operations.

“The need for NNPC to impress on oil companies to emplace more effective surveillance/monitoring mechanisms on their crude oil pipeline networks is also necessary. Going forward, the Nigerian Navy remains committed and resolute in ensuring safer waterways and sea lanes for Nigeria’s economy to thrive,” he said.

  • Christian votes will make the difference, says Wike

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has called on Christians to troop out and vote during the forthcoming elections because their votes will make the difference.

Speaking during a special combined Sunday Worship Service at the Deeper Life Camp Ground, Rumudara, Port Harcourt, Wike said Christians can no longer stand aloof while the country slides into destruction.

He said that Christians should not believe the false propaganda that they cannot influence the outcome of political contests in the country.

“You must vote during the forthcoming elections.  If you don’t vote and a bad leader emerges, you are part of those that brought that bad leadership.

“Your vote can make the difference.  So go ahead and vote to effect a positive change”, he said.

He charged the church not to allow the children of God to be surrounded by those not supposed to be in charge of leadership.

The governor said that all Christians have witnessed first-hand the failures of the last four years of the Federal Government which have destroyed the economy, engendered unemployment, insecurity and dictatorial  tendencies.

He said this was the opportunity to chart a new direction.

Wike said that all efforts of Christians to ensure the country makes progress would be crowned when they vote for their preferred choice.

He appealed to Christians to continue to pray against those plotting electoral violence and bloodshed in Rivers State.

He said: “Please pray for this state. Pray against those plotting electoral violence in this state. Pray for the state to have peaceful and credible polls.  Those plotting shall be disappointed.

“None of my supporters should engage in political violence on my behalf.  Nobody should use violence to support me”.

The governor stated that security agencies plotting bloodshed in Rivers State will be consumed by their plot and Rivers State will emerge victorious.

He said Christians should pray that God enables Judges to act right despite the intimidation and false propaganda by the APC Federal Government.

The Deeper Life Camp Ground Youth Choir Ministered to the congregation in a Special number where they declared that they are no longer slaves to  sin and fear, but children of God.

State Head of Deeper Life Church, Pastor Chike Onwuasunya said truly Governor Wike is Mr. Project as his projects are visible.

He declared that all those making prophecies and preaching violence against Rivers State will witness the peaceful elections.  He said all evil plans will fail.

He urged Deeper Life members to vote to determine the positive  direction  of the country

  • Supreme Court did not bar Rivers APC, says Senator Uchendu

The Senator representing Rivers East Senatorial District, Andrew Uchendu, at the weekend said that the Supreme Court did not bar the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State from fielding candidates in the February 16th and March 2nd elections.

He said that the APC has the right to field candidates in the elections despite last Friday’s ruling by the Supreme Court on a case brought before it by some members of the party.

Uchendu insisted that contrary to some reports, the APC and its candidates in the State will participate in the elections as scheduled by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

He noted that what the Supreme Court ruled on was the issue of jurisdiction which in no way shut out APC and its candidates from the elections.

The lawmaker said that taking into cognizance the rulings of the apex court in other cases, it is settled that the courts do not have any jurisdiction on the internal affairs or disputes within a political party.

He stressed that the APC in Rivers State was not factionalised as is being painted by its detractors.

He noted that members of the party have remained under one executive committee duly recognized by the national leadership of APC.

According to him:  “The Supreme Court did not say our candidates for the forthcoming elections cannot participate in the elections.

“What I am saying is that the import of the Supreme Court judgement was on the issue of legal representation. Who is the legally appointed counsel of the APC in Rivers State at the trial court level?

“The Supreme Court said it is the counsel that was briefed by the APC lawyer. That was the matter that was settled yesterday (Friday) and it has nothing to do with whether there is a faction in APC Rivers or not  and whether we should take part in the election or not.

“One issue I want to clear is that Tonye Cole is not the only person that is affected by what is going on.

“Nigerians don’t know that all the National Assembly, Gubernatorial and State House of Assembly candidates; about 49 of us are affected. So it’s a whole state.

All the candidates of APC in Rivers State are affected and not just the gubernatorial candidates. We are all involved in the case and we are very hopeful that we will triumph at the end of the day.

“We see the issue in court as dispute within the party. Ordinarily, we expected that the trial court should have upheld our case that it had no jurisdiction but it went ahead and heard the matter. The Court of Appeal upheld that and we are now at the Supreme Court.

“I am very, very hopeful, the court being the last hope of the common man and particularly when the courts have severally said that courts have no jurisdiction on the internal disputes of political parties.”

He said that in the course of the struggle for the soul of the party, Senator Magnus Abe, one of the contending forces, went to court to challenge the outcome of the ward congresses conducted by the party in the State.

Uchendu accused Abe of allegedly hobnobbing with Governor Nyesom Wike and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to undermine the fortunes of the APC in the state.

He said, “I sympathize with him (Abe) because history will be most unkind to him. They didn’t go for any congress from ward to state level.  They didn’t have any office.

“But after the national convention of the party, they now sat down and drew up some names of ward executives, local government executives and then hired an office, an after-thought. Somebody must have advised them to go and do this just to create the impression that there is a faction.”

  • PDP hails Supreme Court’s ruling on Rivers APC

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has hailed the judgment of the Supreme Court nullifying primary elections of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers state.

By implication, the APC chapter in River State will not be fielding candidates in the upcoming general elections. In a statement Friday by the spokesman for the PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan, the party described the apex court’s judgment as victory for democracy and the rule of law.

The statement said, “The party commends the apex court for its courage in delivering the landmark judgment, which has saved the nation from a serious constitutional crisis that could have marred the 2019 general elections and detract from our overall electoral system.

“The judgment of the Supreme Court serves as a huge lesson to politicians and political parties, to eschew impunity and always conduct their affairs in a manner that is in tandem with the provision of the law.

“The courage displayed by the Supreme Court in delivering the judgment at this critical time in our national life has also restored the confidence of Nigerians in the institution of the Judiciary and our democratic order.

“The PDP however urges its teeming members across the country to continue to work hard in consolidating on the already established victory of our great party in all elections, beginning with next Saturday’s presidential election”.
