Reps to investigate Total E&P for neglect

The House of Representatives has condemned the total  neglect and deliberate underdevelopment of oil-producing communities in Andoni Local Government Area (LGA) of Rivers State by Total Exploration and Production (E&P) Nigeria Ltd.

Consequently, House Committees on Local Content and Legislative compliance have been mandated to investigate the allegations and the local content components of the projects in the area.

The lawmakers opined that the investigation was aimed at  ensuring that Total E&P Nigeria Limited do include the youth of Andoni in its recruitment process of both graduate and non-graduate staff, award contracts to Andoni indigenes, embark upon capacity building and community development projects.

According to the lawmakers, Total E&P Ltd has deliberately breached the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Content Development Act (NOGICD), 2010 with its condemnable  treatment of the host communities.

This followed the adoption of a motion  by Awaji-Inombek Abiante (PDP, Rivers), who regretted that despite over 27 years of continuous oil and gas extraction and operation, Total E&P Ltd has not executed cumulative developmental projects worth up to N200m in towns of the host communities, despite the profit of billions of dollars from its operations in communities in Andoni Local Government Area of Rivers State.

Saying that Andoni Local Government Area of Rivers State is one of the Oil Producing areas in the country, Abiante recalled that Total Exploration and Production Limited, formerly known as Elf Petroleum Nigeria Limited established the Amenan/Kpono oil platform as far back as 1990 in the community and the adjoining territorial waters as well as drilled several inherent and associated oil wells in the area including Usan, Asobo among others.

He said: “The Amenan/Kpono fields established upon Oil Mining Lease (OML) 99 and 70 is one of the largest conventional offshore developments in West Africa and from official records, from 2003 till date and at a rate of 125,000 bpd, Total has produced over 500 million barrels of crude oil from the said facility as well as a larger quantity of gas from the field.

“Out of over fifty 50 contractors and sub-contractors that worked for Total in establishing the platform and are still working for it in its operations, not one was or is of Andoni extraction contrary to the provisions of Section 3(2), 25, 26, 27, and 28 of the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Content Development (NOGICD) Act, 2010.

“It is also observed that official government records confirm that from 1990 when it established the Amenam/Kpono platform till date, spanning over 27 years of continuous oil and gas extraction and operation, Total E&P Ltd has not executed cumulative developmental projects worth up to N200m in towns of the host communities, despite the profit of billions of dollars from its operations in the communities.

“The Local Government is the host of the proposed Egina Field and same situation that applied to the establishment of Akpo field and all the previous fields by Total has also applied and is being implemented in respect of the Akpo, Egina and Ofon 2 fields situated within the waters of Andoni environment in terms of naming of the facilities, contracts, capacity building, employment and development projects.

“Whereas Phase 1 of the Akpo oil field which produces 145,000 bpd of crude oil is situated off Andoni Coastal waters, Total elected not to inform or consult with the communities of the commencement of either phase of the development and operations of the fields, thus keeping the people out of the environmental impact assessment studies and issues and local content components of the projects as the host communities by way of capacity building, employment, contracts, developmental projects and every other benefits as provided for in the laws.

“Total has not maintained a good relationship with the host communities and by the current estimates, the projects are estimated to be worth over $3.5 billion and projected to create over 50,000 jobs, but currently, Total E&P and its Joint Venture partners Free Zone Enterprises have commenced staff recruitment without employing a single Andoni indigene.

“Andoni Local Government Area has lately been beset by uncontrolled cult activities, unprecedented armed robbery, kidnappings, reprisal killings, mayhem and destruction engendered by joblessness and lack of meaningful means of  livelihood for the teeming youth population and also Total’s failure to award contracts to them, build their capacities and provide the needed community development and opportunities is a direct invitation for youth restiveness which is imminent if the issues are not quickly addressed”.

The investigative committees were given six weeks to carry out the assignment and report back for further legislative action.

PDP will win the 2019 Presidential election – Wike

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has declared that the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ) will win the Presidential election  in 2019 because Nigerians yearn for the return of pro-people leadership.

The governor declared  that though the APC Federal Government and electoral officials are plotting to subvert the will of the people, they will be resisted by Nigerians.

He spoke in  Asaba on Sunday night during the meeting of the National Working Committee and PDP Governors Forum.

According to Governor Wike, if democratic principles are respected, those pretending to be seeking a second term after a woeful performance would have declined  contesting elections.

“We are going to win the Presidency in 2019. We take it for granted  that we have won our governorship, National Assembly and State Assembly seats”, he said.

He said at present, PDP Governors are orphans in Abuja, hence the need to take over leadership at Federal  level

The governor added: “Frankly speaking, If Nigeria is a country where democracy is democracy, so many wont talk about  contesting election. Because  first of all you need to tell the people what you have done for  them.

“What will they come to tell Delta people that they have done in the area? Nothing. What is their confidence? What will they say they have done in the Niger Delta?

“What they don’t understand is that we are more prepared now than in the past. Anybody who thinks that he can come and rig us out, will fail.”

Governor Wike said that the fight against corruption  must include the  struggle  for the promotion of a credible democratic electoral process.

He said: “Part of corruption that we must fight is the corruption of stealing people’s mandate. That is the biggest corruption.

“When we get that right, other things will fall in place.  It is corruption when you don’t allow those who have won to be declared as winners. “

He regretted that Nigeria goes to smaller countries to observe how elections are conducted, but are unable to conduct credible polls.

The governor said that no matter the antics of the APC Federal Government, Nigerians will insist on credible polls in 2019.

  • Re-positioning of Rivers health sector is on course – Wike

Re-positioning of Rivers health sector is on course – Wike

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has stated that the process for the re-positioning of  all levels of the health sector is effectively on course, with the acquisition of state-of-the-art equipment for Braithwaite Memorial Specialist Hospital.

The governor also declared that the total rehabilitation of structures at the Braithwaite Memorial Specialist Hospital will create the right environment  for quality tertiary healthcare.

In an interview after an inspection visit to the Braithwaite Memorial Specialist Hospital in Port Harcourt on Monday, Governor Wike said that the health sector will continue to recover  priority attention from his administration.

The governor who was accompanied on the project inspection by the National Chairman of PDP, Prince Uche Secondus, said that majority of the equipment procured by the State Government for the hospital have arrived.

He said: “Our objective is to improve the standard of the Braithwaite Memorial Specialist Hospital as a centre of excellence in tertiary healthcare.

“In terms of equipment, the contractors have done well. Eighty percent  of the equipment have arrived  the hospital premises and they will be installed as soon as the rehabilitation “.

He, however, noted that the progress of work on the structural rehabilitation is slow, hence the contractors  should expedite action.

“We believe the contractors should deploy more workforce for the rehabilitation of the hospital.  The State Government is doing what is necessary to enhance the quality of the Braithwaite Memorial Specialist Hospital “, he said.

The governor also inspected the ongoing reconstruction of the Doctors Quarters at the Braithwaite Memorial Specialist Hospital . He advised the contractors to improve on the pace of work.

He assured that funding of the the projects will be sustained  early completion.

The governor was briefed during the project inspection by Dr. Paul Kua, Medical Director of Braithwaite Memorial Specialist Hospital, and Mrs. Ajumoke Okpu, Director of Nursing.

The Wike administration has completed the reconstruction and equipping  of 13 General Hospitals spread across the three senatorial districts of the state.

  • Nigeria is in a coma, says Wike

Nigeria is in a coma, says Wike

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has declared that Nigeria is in a coma, saying only the PDP can salvage the  country.
This is as Former Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido declared that he has the capacity  to revive the fortunes of the country.
They spoke at the Government House Port Harcourt on Wednesday when the Former Jigawa State Governor visited to inform Governor Wike of his intention  to vie for the position of the President.
Governor Wike said that the APC is a party of strangers with no knowledge  of the intricacies of development.
He said that the APC thrives in politics of mischief wherein it engages in high level intimidation, corruption and dirty political  schemes to compel defection of PDP members to her fold.
“If you decamp to the APC, you are no longer corrupt.  APC  is a party of daylight deceit.
“I am happy that one of those who left to bring a messiah, have realised that the so-called messiah they brought  is no longer the messiah Nigerians expect. PDP  is the only hope for Nigeria”, Governor Wike said.
The governor  noted that though the PDP  made mistakes in the past, the Party is the only platform with the commitment and patriotism  to take the country out of the current situation.
He said the present political and economic situation in the country require politicians with courage to rescue  the country.
He said those who benefited from the PDP since inception till 2013 before defecting are the same people sponsoring  negative propaganda against the Party.
The governor described Lamido as a committed and consistent  PDP member who is courageous and has the capacity  to confront the APC.
He, however, urged all Presidential Aspirants to accept the verdict of the Party at the end of the primary.
Also speaking, Former Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido said  he is presenting himself to take over in 2019 because  the nation deserves to move forward.
He said that if given the opportunity to lead Nigeria, he has the capacity  to unite Nigeria and set it on the path of growth.
He said: “I want to run because I feel I can do it. I have the pedigree.  We stand  to fight for democracy  and the restoration of Nigeria”.
He said that his will work with other PDP leaders to transform Nigeria for the good of the people.
The Former Jigawa State Governor said that the APC is a party of hate and deceit, hence it should be sacked in 2019.
  • 2019: Rivers accuses APC of plan to undermine 2019 elections

2019: Rivers accuses APC of plan to undermine 2019 elections

The Rivers state Government (RSG),  yesterday accused the All Progressives congress ( APC ), led Federal Government (FG),  of concluded plan to grant amnesty and pardon to the 32 cultisted who were declared wanted by the state security council last week.
The State commissioner for Information,  Emma Okah,  a Lawyer made the allegation a news statement in Port Harcourt,  the state capital yesterday.
Okah quoted security intelligent report at their disposal as saying that the essence of the amnesty was to woo the people into the APC party with the view of using them to format trouble at 2019 general elections.
Okah said, “The Rivers state government had earlier accuses All Progressives Congress ( APC ), in the state of has approached the 32 cultists who were declared wanted by the state security command for the purpose of ensuring their membership and in return grant them protection and liberty.
“The Rivers state government today in receipt of credible intelligence to the effect that the the Federal Government has concludes plans to grant amnesty to these 32 cultists who were declared wanted by the security in council of Rivers state.
“Details of this intelligence which we gathered indicates that the Fedetal Giveenmentbis granting the said cultists amnesty for the purpose of undue electoral advantage in the forthcoming 2019 general elections.”
He accused the FG of continuous efforts to undermining the efforts of the state government in exterminating violent crimes in the state but maintained that the plots would not deter the government in restoring peace into the state.
“In our view,  this action is not a surprise to us,  because we have repeatedly said it that some of these excesses of the Federal government are frustrating the fight against violent crime and criminality in our state.” he said.
“In particular, We have accused the Federal Special Anti robbery squad (F-SARS),  of not just being involved directly in perpetrating violent crimes in Rivers state but also are aiding and abating such crimes in the state.
“The activities of SARS in this regard have not ceased. This share development coming at the time they stated is winning the war against culrism and kidnapping therefore become a major set back and a ploy to undermine security in Rivers state, and bring to not,  the enormous financial resources we have committed to the issue of security in the State.
“Sadly, each time we recorded success in the promotion of security in the state,  the Federal Government and her agent take deliberate steps to sabortage the security of the state at the instigation of some unpatriotic sons of Rivers state who are serving at the centre.”
He called on various bodies and groups to save the soul of the state from the antics of APC, insisting that the 32 persons will not be delayed from the crimson list until they have answered to their crimes.
“We therefore call on the international community,  civil society organizations and well meaning Nigerians to ….act to compromise the security of Rivers state for ungodly political gain by the APC -led Federal Government.
“For the avoidance of doubt,  the Rivers state government will continue to work closely with the security agencies in the state”
In the swift reactions,  the state Publicity Secretary of APC, Chris Finebone said, “The simple truth is that since federal security forces killed Don Waney, Gov. Wike’s personal security architecture has suffered irredeemable damage.
“He is making very desperate attempts at changing the well known narrative that Don Waney and the PDP worked for the other. Those of you in the media know better. Gov. Wike and his officials are making desperate attempts at misleading ongoing investigations concerning those who sponsored, funded and protected Don Waney all these years.
“They know those the investigations will lead to, hence the desperate attempt to divert attention, but it is too late. Calling APC or the Federal Government simply confirms that the Rivers State governor and his men are at their wit’s end.
“We have said it over and over that Gov. Nyesom Wike cares little about giving good governance to the people of Rivers State and that is why he is perpetually in election mode.
“Instead of condemning Governor Wike, we empathise with him, because we believe that he needs help desperately. Gov. Wike is a victim of a flawed political leadership recruitment system, but unfortunately, Rivers people are the losers for it. It is sad.”he concluded.
  • Why Wike still hates Buhari, Amaechi – Rivers APC

Why Wike still hates Buhari, Amaechi – Rivers APC

*President was never under pressure to declare state of emergency in Rivers, insists APC

The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress ( APC ) has revealed that Governor Nyesom Wike still hates President Muhammadu Buhari and Transportation Minister, Rotimi Amaechi, for masterminding the ouster from office in 2015 of the then President Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ).

It also insisted that President Buhari was never under pressure to declare a state of emergency in Rivers, as alleged by Wike.

Rivers APC, through Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, the Senior Special Assistant on Media/Public Affairs Consultant to Rivers State Chairman, Chief Davies Ikanya, stated these yesterday in Port Harcourt.

Rivers governor, while receiving Anglican Bishops of Niger Delta Province at the Government House, Port Harcourt over the weekend, alleged that President Buhari was under intense pressure from leaders of the APC to declare a state of emergency in Rivers.

The main opposition party in Rivers ( APC ) said: “Wike’s hatred for President Buhari and Amaechi is legendary, since the two APC leaders masterminded the ouster from office of his ATM, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, under whose watch our common patrimony was looted with impunity.

Because of this, he is ever ready to use any forum to castigate, insult and malign these two great leaders, not minding the dire consequences.

“President Buhari never complained to Wike of any pressure to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State. We are shocked that Wike could bring the exalted office of the governor to odium, in such a reckless manner, to ascribe to President Buhari something he never said.

“To the best of our knowledge, the three issues that Wike discussed with President Buhari were Ogoni clean-up, the Nkpogu Junction (Port Harcourt) incident with Amaechi, where attempt was made on the life of the Transportation Minister and the detention of Wike’s Chief Security Officer (CSO) for one week.

“Nobody is interested in declaring a state of emergency in Rivers State, not minding the abysmal failure of Wike to ensure protection of the lives and property of the people of Rivers State.

“We urge Wike not only to call himself to order, but to formally apologise to President Buhari for ascribing words he never uttered to him, to score cheap publicity, always associated with him.”

Rivers APC also stated that the Neighborhood Watch about being established by Wike’s government would be used to cause more mayhem in Rivers state, to boast his chances during the 2019 governorship election, declaring that the Rivers governor stood no chance in any election, without violence.

The main opposition party reassured the peace-loving people of Rivers state and other Nigerians that not minding the abysmal failure of Wike in governance, the Federal Government would always protect lives and property in the Niger Delta state.

  • Tackling security challenges in Rivers State

Tackling security challenges in Rivers State

THE primary purpose of government all over the world is to secure lives and property and provide the good things of life.

The Nigerian constitution describes it as the provision of security and welfare of the people.

Right from the days of ancient philosophers like Aristotle, Plato to great modern thinkers such as Thomas Hobbes and John Locke down to the contemporary of John Stuart Mill, John Dewey, Harold Laski among others were unanimous as a matter of imperative that the protection of human lives and property remain the cardinal objective of the purpose of the state.

This underscores the reason making security of lives and property the fundamental barometer in measuring the performance index of any government. It is in line with this spirit that serious minded governments do not hesitate towards investing huge resources ensuring citizens enjoy maximum peace and security with their two eyes closed without any nightmare by men of the underworld.

In recent times, Nigeria has been bedeviled by one security challenge or the other.

From the North to the South, Nigerians have been griped with the fear of insecurity; ranging from activities of Boko Haram, heinous robbery, kidnapping, fratricidal communal inspired programs to mindless killings by acts of terrorism.

These activities have taken an unquantifiable toll on the nation’s economy with thousands of lives and property wasted for no reasons.

In Rivers State, the recent killing of about 17 innocent men and women who were massacred in their cold blood on the crossover night of 2018, while returning from their spiritual duty to God was a sad one and one death too many.

Viewing Governor Nyesome Wike on the Television who betrayed his emotions with tears in his eyes streaming down; one could not hold back the tears of empathy.

Governor Wike’s sense of humanity was obvious as he did not waste time to place a ransome of N200 million.

While contending with the theatre of killings in Omoku, the news of massacre by suspected herdsmen in Benue state was broken where many homes were wiped out.

In Benue State, politicizing the issue of security was out of the question as the people rally round Governor Orthom to seek solution rather than accusing him as the mastermind of the problem.

In Rivers State, it is unfortunate and sad to mention that the narratives took a different twist as Governor Nyesome Wike and his ruling party became the focal point of accusation over the killings at Omoku.

The social media was awashed with reports of accusation without any single proof of evidence.

This is a sore moment in the history of Nigeria. No same person no matter the political affiliation should ever imagine or contemplate on making a political capital out of a security to malign an elected government charged with the solemn responsibility to protect lives and property.

We thank God governor Wike refused to be distracted by such petty allegations which is borne out of scoring cheap and mischievous political agenda.

Governor Nyesome Wike promised the people of Rivers State that he would leave no stone unturned to work closely with the security agents in bringing the perpetrators of the heinous crime to book by providing necessary logistics as chief security officer of the state.

Reassuring as the promise was, barely a week later, the kingpin and mastermind of the New Year killing at Omoku Mr. Don Wanney was tracked down and killed in Enugu State.

As swiftly as the result was in tracking down Don Wanney, lips of critics of the Wike administration were completely sealed up.

The political will shown by governor Wike is a clear demonstration that he is fully committed to the security of lives and property of the Rivers people.

This is where those who are fanning the embers of disaffection in Rivers State by resorting to such wild allegations against Mr. Wike should have a rethink and tender unreserved apology to the people of Rivers State.

The issue of security all over the world is a national concern regardless of the individual or group political leaning. It was ridiculous for an individual or group of persons to reduce it to politics.

When people embark on demarketing Rivers State, Port-Harcourt the capital known as the “Garden City” will ultimately be the loser as investments flowing into the state to provide employment opportunities may be moved to peaceful states.

Therefore, it was a sheer act of wickedness and politics of bitterness to link Mr. Wike to the atrocities committed by certified gang of criminals.

Governor Wike is not only trying his best to complete abandoned projects or projects he inherited from his predecessors but has also turned Rivers State to a huge construction site.

A trip to parts of Rivers State will convince anyone that cares to visit that the governor deserves the appellation, “MR PROJECT” where life transforming projects like massive road constructions to link up rural communities are dotted all over the landscape of the state, much less of owing of workers.

Not minding the political affiliation, APC governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State made a glowing commendation to Governor Nyesome Wike during a visit to the state. This was followed by another visit by the Minister of Sports and Chieftain of APC Mr. Solomon Dalung, who flung party difference aside and commended MR PROJECT for changing the development narratives in Rivers State.

This underscores the fact that the Security and pace of development in Rivers State can only be sustained in an atmosphere of unity of purpose, devoid of political mischief and unnecessary rancour.

Only last year, as part of strategy in tackling the security concern in Rivers state, the Wike administration designed an action-packed programme of amnesty for repentant cultists.

The programme which revolved around the carrot and stick approach was deliberately put in place towards nipping the problem of violence enrime in the bud.

This is where all men and women of Rivers state including Multinational companies operating in the state should as a matter of imperative rally round the governor in the drive to provide peace and security for the overall sustainable development of Rivers State and Nigeria in general.

The recent report that oil companies are fueling security crisis in Rivers State is a sad commentary and a huge setback for Rivers people, while they are yet to recover from the shameful and heartless divide and rule role some of these multinational companies played in the Niger Delta leading to the judicial murder of the foremost environmentalist, Mr. Ken Saro-Wiwa.

The direct allegation made by the chief security officer and governor of Rivers State about the complicity of oil companies a weighty one that cannot just be swept under the carpet, given the antecedents of these oil companies in the Deltaic region.

This is counterproductive to the campaign agenda of president Buhari on the fight against insecurity in the country.

What the time demands is for Rivers men and women, youths, clergy men and women, to close rank and come together to confront the common monster that wants to turn back the ticking clock of development in the state.

They can do this by working hand-in-hand with the security agencies by intensifying efforts in intelligence gathering and report any sinister activities that tend to undermine peace and security in the state. They should appreciate the fact that the business of maintaining peace and security is a collective responsibility and not governor Wike alone.

Hence, they must shun destructive allegations and blackmail which are ill-wind that will do no one any good towards the building of a united, secured, peaceful and prosperous Rivers State.

On the part of Governor Nyesome Wike, he should remain accommodative with the spirit of equanimity in the drive to take Rivers State to the next level.

The security, peace and development of Rivers State should be seen by all as a collective task that must be done.

Police beef up security as IYC inaugurates clan heads in Bayelsa

The Central Zone of the Ijaw Youths Council (IYC) Worldwide, Friday, inaugurated executive committees for all the clans in the zone, which comprises Bayelsa State and some parts of Rivers State amidst heavy police deployment.

The police as early as 7am sent about six patrol vans of heavily armed operatives to mount security around the Ijaw House, Yenagoa, where the clan heads and their executive members were sworn-in by the zone’s Chairman, Mr. Tare Porri.

It was gathered that the police took the proactive measure to forestall possible breakdown of law and order following internal rancour between the central zone of IYC and the Oweilaemi Peretubo-led national leadership of the council.

Hundreds of Ijaw youths, who trooped to the venue to partake in the inauguration were frisked by security operatives, who were stationed at the gate, before they were allowed access to the venue.

Scanners and other security devices were deployed to search vehicles for explosives and other weapons.

But the inauguration which was also monitored by the representative of the IYC National Deputy President, Mr. Esuku Belief, was successful despite initial protest by some clans that they knew nothing about the elections.

Porri, who spoke after the inauguration, described the development as historic and set up a committee to look into all the complaints of some clans.

He insisted that there was no rancour between the central zone and the national leadership of IYC adding that by virtue of the council’s constitution, the deputy national president coordinates zonal activities.

Porri further said the central zone was united and peaceful and asked persons trying to foment trouble within the zone to keep off.

He said: “We don’t have any issues with the President. We are ready to work together with the national leadership of IYC. I am committed to working together with the IYC worldwide to ensure that we all succeed.

“We cannot be divided at this time. We know as a people the person who is constitutionally empowered to addressing issues in zones. The person in charge of coordinating zones is the deputy national president and we are working with him.

“We are also working with the president so I am surprised that people are saying we are not working with him. IYC central zone is united there is no division and there is no crisis and so nobody should cause crisis in the zone.

“They should go to the western zone to resolve the crisis there. Central zone is peaceful and we are all working together”.

Porri, who said the IYC was not a Facebook organisation, advised the clans to use the opportunity given to them to render service to the Ijaw nation.

He appealed to them to with their people and ensures peace in their clans and warned them against use their positions to cause crisis.

“Don’t be involved in criminality, violence and crisis. Work with the zone to ensure that all out clans are peaceful and successful,” he said.

  • Forum takes safe school campaign to Rivers

Forum takes safe school campaign to Rivers

The Global Shapers Community, an initiative of the World Economic Forum in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has begun its safer school campaign, as part of its efforts towards achieving Quality Education in the Sustainable Development Goal.

The GSC, Port Harcourt adopted Community Secondary School, Nkpolu as its pilot school with training tagged “Say No to Bullying” and “Conflict Management”.

Mr Dayo Ibitoye, Curator, PH Global Shapers Hub, said the training was aimed at “ensuring quality education”, towards ensuring that “our schools are safe havens for learning unhindered by bullying or inadequate infrastructural and learning facilities.”

“We decided to embark on a two-prong safer schools campaign with training on bullying, conflict and anger management and the possibility of re-fencing the school property to prevent interlopers, criminals and other undesirable elements from using the school grounds as a thoroughfare or constituting harm to the students,” he said.

He further said students were taught, through practical and theoretical exercises, the adverse effects of bullying, the causes of bullying and how to avoid being bullied.

“At the end of the day, it was obvious that these trainings have to be continuous exercise with a more hands-on approach, possibly even private counselling sessions for students who are victims of bullying and who may be unable to express themselves in a class full of other students.

“It was also evident that beyond rebuilding the fence, a lot of the senior classes we visited are in dire need of refurbishing as most of them had grossly inadequate and damaged furniture, blackboards and broken ceilings.

“While we are not certain that this damage was occasioned by outsiders or overuse, we believe that the students must also be given a sense of responsibility with regard to their classroom facilities after they are refurbished.

“In conclusion, CSS Nkpolu is a big school with a sizeable land mass and a substantial student population and the student-to-teacher ratio seems to be quite unbalanced.

“The challenges already stare us in the face- how do we make a scalable and sustainable impact in a school so big with such a diverse student population?” Ibitoye asked.

Ibitoye said the hub intends to take the challenges one step at a time, adding that they would be seeking partnerships with individuals and other bodies to do so.
