Rivers people believe in Nigeria’s unity – Wike

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, says Rivers people believe in Nigerian unity.

He said that because of that they may not be part of any secession agenda.

The Governor made this known at the 57th Independence Church Service, which held at Saint Mark’s Anglican Church in Port Harcourt.

“God has blessed this country, we are not part of those who want to secede, Rivers State will never be part of that,” the Governor stressed.

The governor, however, advised the Federal Government ( FG ) to ensure good governance to end the increasing agitation for self determination among ethnic groups in Nigeria.

“In as much as you continue to have bad governance, people will continue to agitate across the country, we give God the glory that we are still one, despite the agitations and challenges,’’ he added.

He called for justice and equity for all citizens.

He also advised Nigerians to always speak out against injustice.

Gov. Wike noted that politicians sometimes behaved irrationally because of their thinking that they could always manipulate election results to suit their purpose.

The Governor called for enhanced security and a purposeful justice system for all federating units.

He stated that such gesture will give all Nigerians a sense of belonging and reduce the palpable tension across the country.

Wike reiterated the call for an investigation into the activities of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) in Rivers.

In his sermon, the Anglican Bishop of Evo Diocese, Rt. Rev Innocent Ordu, noted that Nigeria had developed despite the challenges facing it.

The Bishop called on Nigerians to respect the constitution of the country and constituted authorities.

He also charged them to work for the development of the country.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Independence Church Service attracted top government functionaries, security agencies and traditional rulers

  • Commandant urge Rivers youths to shun violence, embrace peace

Commandant urge Rivers youths to shun violence, embrace peace

The Rivers State Commandant of the Peace Corps of Nigeria, Dr. Oyemike Oyemike, has urged youths to shun violence and embrace peace.

He spoke in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital, at a public lecture to mark the United Nations International Day of Peace.

Oyemike noted that the international day of peace was an opportunity for individuals, organisations and nations to create practical acts of peace.

He said: “It is necessary for Nigerians from different religions and ethnic backgrounds to do away with sentimental beliefs and pursue the virtue of peace, law and social order.

“The act of conflict prevention, peace building, peace making and post-conflict transformation, the cornerstone of thriving democracy and sustainable development, involve all, especially the government, individuals and the larger society.”

The commandant also stated that it is in preparing youths towards embracing the culture of peace and the act of non-violence that the founding fathers of the Peace Corps of Nigeria, in their wisdom, initiated the scheme, tailored at redirecting the productive energy of youths, to make them useful to their families and nation.

The guest speaker, Dr. Raimi Lasisi, who spoke on “Together for Peace, Respect, Safety and Dignity for all,” insisted that efforts must be made to ensure peace to have development and make progress.

Lasisi said: “While the United Nations, which acts as the global watchdog, is doing everything possible to ensure global peace, the actions or even inactions of individuals and select groups continue to provide incentives for violence, conflicts and war in many parts of the country and the world in general.

“Anti-peace drums are being sounded across Nigeria, as the old evil of Boko Haram struggles to maintain its deadly status in the North, in addition to the migratory character of the herdsmen violence. The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) is corroborating their efforts in the East. This is in addition to widespread discontent and in most cases social antagonism among Nigerian citizens concerning the economic hardship in the country.

“In Nigeria, the threat to our collective conscience (togetherness), sustainable peace, respect, safety and dignity emerged as a result of structural historical circumstances that were not humanely addressed and now, they have festered to the extent that it is almost difficult to exorcise their ghosts.

“While economic conditions, notably poverty, are the major drivers of violence and crime around the world, especially in developing societies, cultural and religious indicators are by far the most devastating, with regard to living together for sustainable peace, respect, safety and dignity around the world.”

The guest speaker also stated that coming together to ensure sustainable peace, respect, safety and dignity for all in any society would require mutual respect for diversity, especially in a multi-ethnic society like Nigeria, stressing that sustainable peace and respect would provide the necessary pathway to safety and dignity for all.

He pointed out that the importance of good governance in cementing relationships among citizens in any society could never be overemphasised, stressing that good governance would create an enabling environment for citizens of any country to feel the positive impact of governance, have respect for the institutions and succumb to the rule of law.

Lasisi noted that government must ensure that youths were empowered through healthy employment opportunities, stating that the absence of sustainable jobs, especially for the youths, would make them a ready army for all kinds of illicit socio-economic activities that would undermine sustainable peace, respect, safety and dignity for all.

  • Wike raising false alarm against security agencies, says APC

Wike raising false alarm against security agencies, says APC

The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused Governor Nyesom Wike of raising false alarm against security agencies.

The governor, on Wednesday, claimed the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) operatives were behind kidnapping and robbery in the state.

Rivers APC, at a news conference in Port Harcourt by its Publicity Secretary, Chief Chris Finebone,  Secretary Emeka Beke and other leaders of the party, accused the governor of having sewn police uniforms for thugs used by his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to rig the 2015 elections and rerun in Rivers.

It stated that Wike ought to have emulated his Abia State counterpart, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, who was proactive by declaring three-day dusk-to-dawn curfew in Aba, the commercial nerve centre of Abia, with the curfew later extended to today, to prevent further breakdown of law and order.

Rivers APC noted that the failure of Wike’s government to engage in productive ventures, was responsible for increase in the crime rate in Rivers, with hungry and angry youths returning to crime.

Wike alleged that the SARS Commander in Rivers, Mr. Akin Fakorede, and operatives of the squad were indicted by an official police signal, which he claimed showed that they were responsible for the series of kidnapping and robbery across the state.

The main opposition party said: “Ordinarily, the APC has no business involving in any matter between the Rivers governor and any other entity, but in the instant case and even in previous related cases, Wike has either alluded to or expressly stated that the APC benefited from whatever allegations he raised against the police or particularly the SARS. The APC has also been at the receiving end of the false alarms Wike had previously raised against the police, which, in all cases, turned out to be mere smokescreen by the governor to mask his real intentions.

“From all indications, the Rivers governor’s accusation on Wednesday that members of SARS abducted some persons and forced them to withdraw N500,000, is manifestly cooked up to directly smear members of the SARS and the Commander, Akin Fakorede, who is known to have resisted advances made by Wike to compromise the officer.

“Wike has never hidden his disdain for the SARS commander, due to the officer’s principled and professional stance in rejecting the governor’s bait in the past two years. Wike seems to have sworn to have Akin Fakorede compromised or transferred out of Rivers State, to pave the way for a replacement that may play ball with him.

“Just before the killings in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni LGA (ONELGA) of Rivers State assumed a frightening dimension, Wike had raised the alarm, accusing the military and police of invading ONELGA. Just after his blackmail of the Army and Police, his private army, led by Don Wannie, launched his massive killing and beheading in ONELGA. Same was the case when Wike sponsored a campaign of calumny against the military personnel that tried to normalise security in Ogoniland. He made all manner of accusations against the Army that had gone in search of Solomon Ndigbara, Wike’s private army general in Ogoni. Shortly after the sponsored campaign against the Army in Ogoni , Ndigbara launched his killings in Ogoniland.

“Part of the concerns of the APC is that whenever Wike is about committing some security infractions, he diverts attention from himself, by raising false alarm against security agencies, especially the police. In the instant case, Rivers governor is raising these alarms to distract the police and pave the way for his killers to undertake further killings in Rivers State. Without doubt, we believe the security information in our kitty to that effect.”

  • ‘Army not directly involved in Oyibo crises’

‘Army not directly involved in Oyibo crises’

The Nigerian Army says it is not directly involved in ongoing operation to restore law and order in Oyibo Local Government Area of Rivers.

Col. Aminu Iliyasu, Spokesman of the 6 Division of the Nigerian Army, Port Harcourt, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Port Harcourt on Thursday.

Iliyasu said the army only assisted the police on Tuesday following violent clash between members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Hausa community.

According to him, troops has since been withdrawn to strategic locations while the police are now fully in control of the situation.

“Some persons are just trying to stir up tension by insinuating that the army was involved in shootout with IPOB members in the early hours of Thursday.

“If any security agency had shootout with anyone; then it is definitely not the army that took part in the shootout.

“This is because the army has since withdrawn troops on Tuesday after normalcy was restored to enable the police to discharge their constitutional mandate.

“However, soldiers are currently on standby in case the situation escalates beyond what the police can handle. It is only in that situation that the army will intervene,” he said.

The spokesman said that no arrest was made by the army during its brief intervention in the clash that ensued between IPOB members and the Hausa community.

He said that relative calm had been restored with social and economic activities returning to the area.

  • Wike: SARS behind Rivers kidnapping, robbery

Wike: SARS behind Rivers kidnapping, robbery

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike yesterday alleged that most of the kidnapping  and robbery in the state are perpetrated by operatives  of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

The governor said the Rivers State Special Anti-robbery Squad (SARS)  has been indicted by an official police signal.

Addressing reporters at the Government House, Wike claimed that the SARS commander was planted in the state to sabotage  the security architecture and create an atmosphere  of fear.

The governor said the criminal activities of SARS operatives were uncovered by the Inspector General of Police X Squad, Abuja, deployed in the state, adding that the squad foiled the attempted kidnap of Mr Azumana Ifeanyi on Monday at the GRA, Port Harcourt.

The official police signal provided by the governor, with the title: “Police Wireless Message ” and Reference DT0: 121030/09/2017 —INGENPOL-X-FHQ ABUJA TO-INGENPOL SEC ABUJA, noted that the squad received a distress call on the kidnap of Ifeanyi  and  swung into action.

According to the signal, they met three SARS operatives robbing and a gun duel ensued. The operatives allegedly took Ifeanyi to a Fidelity Bank ATM where they compelled him to withdraw N500,000 as ransom.

The governor said one of the SARS operatives was killed, while Inspector Justice Nyeche, who led the IGP team, was injured.

Wike said: “Most of the kidnapping and armed robbery taking place in this state are done by men of SARS.  They use exhibit vehicles to operate. As the chief security officer of the state, you complain, but they choose to play politics with crime.

“They fight crime in some state, but they refuse to fight crime in Rivers State. We are done with the elections, but they are using SARS to create insecurity in the state.

“As I speak with you, they will deny. But the SARS  operative, who was killed, was among those who raided the Rivers East Senatorial District Collation Centre. This man can be identified in the video as one of those who invaded the collation centre with Fakorede.

“I have never seen a country where they politicise crime. It is obvious that they want to give the impression that Rivers State is unsafe.  They want to instil fear preparatory to declaring during the elections that they is so much killing.

“Authorities  deliberately trying to destroy a state and you  want the people to be happy. I will no longer write. Now is the time  to take my case to the public, for the world to know what is happening.”

The governor said his administration has invested more than any other in security logistics, yet the police work against  the state.

  • PDP loses members to APC in Rivers

PDP loses members to APC in Rivers

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State yesterday lost members to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Members of ‘’I See You’’ left the ruling party in the state for the APC.

State National leader of the group, Chizi Nyeomasila, said: ”Why we chose to give our 100 per cent support to the PDP in the last election was because we thought that when we vote in a super institution to allow the real concept of democracy to be entrenched into the state, but we later realised that we voted in a super human who has subsequently become a sole administrator, instead of the super institution we dreamt of, at that point we had no other choice than to pull out, since we no longer participate.

“We have come to find out that the PDP is certainly not going to where we’re going, and where we are going is a place of peace, to a place of Wealth and Godliness; I assure you that, the announcement of the defection of 108,000 I see you members from PDP to APC today was the first election victory result that will bring APC into government in the state has already been made, and so it is.

“Today (yesterday), we are here to officially declare for the APC for the APC, we left the PDP two months ago and we are now back to APC.”

A former House of Representatives member,  who is the Executive Director, Marine and Operations, Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA), Sokonte Davis , said the defection of PDP members to APC yesterday “is an indication that PDP is ousted in the state”.

Davis said: “From the number of representation I have seen here from my LGA, not less than 200 executive members are here. With what is happening in the state recently, the PDP has been chased away from the state. Currently, the APC has two Senators. The truth is that our strategy of doing the formal decamping ceremonies right at the LGAs and communities is to give the communities the opportunity to fault the decampees, by identifying them in person, with the view of faulting their decamping claim. You can be assured that the days of PDP is numbered in the state.

‘’Everybody in the state knows that the present government in the state is not interested in governance, but politics. Politicians all over know that there is time for politics and time for governance, but it is not so with the Present Governor of the state. He believes that from May 29, 2015 he has to play politics till May 29, 2019 and this is the effect of playing politics from the first day, without giving room for governance.

“When you have been elected to govern the people, you govern, when it time for politics you play politics, unfortunately government in the state refused to govern. There is no government in Rivers state instead it is one political issue or the other, and the people of the state are tired of politics, indeed they were hoodwinked, that is our fragile syndrome and according to them, they thought that was going to work, but it will not work and now they are now ready to elect the government they deserve.”

  • Rivers East district has no senator, says Wike

Rivers East district has no senator, says Wike

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has said Rivers East has no senator.

He spoke yesterday at  a Thanksgiving Service for Senator George Thompson Sekibo, at the St Thomas Anglican Church in Diobu.

Sekibo was sacked from the National Assembly by the Court of Appeal last week.

He accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of destroying key national institutions.

Wike said following APC’s negative governance style, the police and Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) have metamorphosed into rigging machines threatening the peace of the country.

According to him, the Appeal Court judgment, which led to the loss of Rivers East mandate is a fallout of the “unfortunate illegal alliance  between the police and INEC”.

He explained the APC tendered results certified by the Police to the tribunal, which the tribunal relied on, rather than results declared by INEC on election day. He said incidentally, both results had the same serial numbers, which showed the fraud by the two institutions.

He said: “Instead of bringing change as they promised, things are getting worse. They have introduced extreme fraud in the country, especially  denying the people their mandate.”

The governor said nobody  should be afraid of the Police and Army in defence of his mandate in 2019.

“Nobody  should be afraid of the Police or Army, because  liberty comes with a price. They have nothing to campaign with outside  the use of security.  I am ready to place myself on the line. Nobody will take Rivers State, ” he said.

Wike  explained he was  at the airport  to receive Buhari because  the President  is for all Nigerians, irrespective of political parties.

He, however, said he would continue  to disagree with policies of the Federal Government, especially the alleged faulty fight against corruption.

Sekibo said he received  unflinching support from Wike and Ikwerre all through his political struggle.

He said there was no Ikwerre agenda in his ouster from the Senate.

Sekibo said: “If it was an Ikwerre Agenda, it would have been  displayed at the point of voting. At the tribunal, those who took away the mandate were not Ikwerre people”.

Venerable Richard Okpara urged judicial officers to use their constitutional powers  for the good of the country.

He also called on the Federal Government  to learn to accommodate  all political interests, saying the political space  should  not  be overheated .

“We must learn to blend for the good of the nation. We must be careful not to heat the polity. Variety is the spice of life, monotony kills interest.”

  • Rivers Police and Nmezuwuba’s sorrows

If the murder of eight-year-old Chikamso Victory Nmezuwuba is callous and dastardly, the escape of the prime suspect, Maxwell Dike from Rivers State Police Command custody in cloudy circumstances, is bound to offend public sensibilities.

A 23-year old 200 level undergraduate of the University of Port Harcourt, Maxwell Dike who was arrested after he allegedly brutally murdered the little girl for ritual purposes escaped in the custody of the Rivers Police Command in very questionable situation. Dike who lived on the same street with Victory, was arrested by the local vigilante as he allegedly moved very suspiciously to dispose her remains at around 1am.

On questioning, the suspect allegedly dropped the bag he was carrying and took to his heels. He was subsequently pursued and arrested. And when the bag was examined, the vigilante group was shocked that it contained the mutilated body of the little girl who was reported missing the previous day. He was then handed over to the police where he allegedly confessed to the act and took them to where he kept parts of his victim severed in very dehumanizing circumstances after defiling the innocent little girl.

Curiously, the same police came out a day after with the devastating story of the escape of the suspect in circumstances that are bound to arouse serious suspicion of collusion. According to them, when the suspect was taken to the state CID, the investigating police officer took out the handcuffs for him to write his statement. But as he was being led to the cell, the suspect suddenly bolted into the thin air and all efforts to apprehend him proved abortive.

The father of his victim, Dr. Ernest Nmezuwuba who was witness to the ugly and confounding development was so devastated that he has cried foul. He decried the circumstances of the purported escape of the suspect even when policemen at the gate were fully armed. The officer at the centre of the mess was said to have been arrested and thrown into the cell by his bosses who are equally distressed by the scandal.

The state Commissioner of Police, Zaki Ahmed while confirming the sad episode denied suspicion of collusion and attributed it to individual negligence. For him, “it is too bad it happened, but it is one of those things. Sometimes things can happen this way”. He promised to put all within their powers to re-arrest the suspect.

Ahmed took a very simplistic view of the matter even when full investigation is yet to be conducted. Sadly, that inquiry cannot make any meaning until the escapee is re-arrested.  And when this is paired against the alleged request of the said officer that Nmezuwuba should buy water for the suspect when he complained of thirst, it would appear there is more to it than ordinarily meets eyes

How come an officer in custody of such a dangerous suspect could ask a father grieving over the dastardly and incorrigible manner in which his daughter was butchered, to buy drinking water for the same animal who murdered his daughter? And when has it become a practice for those in police custody to be provided food by the same people who want them to face the raw teeth of the law? Or did it not occur to the officer that the suspects could get instant punishment if those they offended are allowed to get them something to eat or drink?

The purport of these posers is that it was too early in the day for Ahmed to have attributed the inexcusable escape to individual error. Even when full investigation leads to that conclusion, a case of gross incompetence and dereliction of duty would have been established against that officer. How come a dangerous suspect arrested through the dexterity of the local vigilante successfully escaped within the walled premises of the CID manned by armed policemen. That such a thing could happen within that premises portrays the vulnerability of that department.

So what is this noise about touted escapades and reinvigoration of the police force when those kept in their custody can escape with relative ease? Before now, we are usually treated to stories of sundry police encounter with criminals: how they gunned down many in combat while those that managed to run away, escaped with bullet wounds. The case in point would have been excusable if the police had told us that the ritual killer escaped with bullet wounds or even paid the supreme price while fleeing police custody. But in this situation, the police was helpless. What a monumental embarrassment and gross display of incompetence in the discharge of their duties. By that negligence as we are being made to believe by the commissioner of police, his men have added to the sorrows of the victims’ father who coincidentally comes from the same village with the escaped suspect.

Ahmed must do all within his powers to re-arrest the fleeing criminal. That is the only way to douse mounting suspicion that there is more to the escape than ordinarily meets the eyes.  The killer suspect even confessed when confronted by the victims’ father that he is not alone in the murderous enterprise. Without arresting him, we would have lost the necessary lead into the ring that sustains this devious murderous activity.

It has become vital to get at those behind the recurring incidence of cultism and ritual killings which are two sides of the coin in the bizarre butchering of innocent souls by the young members of our society. For hardly does any day pass by without stories of ritual murders and cultic killings in different parts of this country. The practice is so pervasive among the youths that something urgent must be done before we relapse into the Hobbesian state of nature characterized by atavism and the law of the jungle.

Curiously, our leaders have failed to respond to the potent danger which ritual killings and its twin brother cultism pose to the survival of the society. Our response to the degenerate level into which these crude practices have sunk, has been limited to apprehending culprits where possible. We have curiously serially defaulted in developing the necessary framework to dig deep into the factors that sustain these inhuman practices and belief systems.

Nobody has cared to investigate what sustains the idea that ritual killings involving the extraction of vital body organs can lead to success either in the acquisition of wealth or awesome supernatural powers.

Since research into the motivation for ritual killings has shown that the practice is thought to lead to transformation, self-deification and healing while satanic human sacrifice is done as a way of drawing down dark forces, our governments should have by now, commenced investigations into the veracity or otherwise of these claims. Working with herbalists and sundry traditional African religion practitioners, findings and conclusions reached could be of immense help in disabusing the minds of young ones against increasing resort to these mundane practices.

We are also confronted by vampirism- a belief that drinking blood and practicing cannibalism can help individuals to achieve power and immortality. These are at the heart of the festering incidence of ritual killings and cultism. But we do know that no human is immortal. Even where power is achieved through such practices, they are still of very temporal and limited value given the mortality of the human.

It is a mark of backwardness and underdevelopment that as other nations excel in science and technology; our people are preoccupied with such mundane issues as occult powers for wealth and supernatural acquisition- practices that take us nowhere except inflicting harm on the rest of the society. The government must do something serious to tackle the menace of cultism and ritual murder before they become another security challenge comparable in terms with such weird religious ideologies that propped up the Boko Haram insurgency.

But the Rivers State Police Command must do all within its powers to re-arrest the fleeing suspect. That is the only way to reassure the distraught father of the slain girl that the police did not collude with the criminal to escape. Even then, those at the centre of the huge mess must not go scot free.

  • Rivers: Eliozu residents protest escape of suspected ritual killer

Rivers: Eliozu residents protest escape of suspected ritual killer

Some residents of Eliozu area of Port Harcourt on Wednesday protested the unfortunate escape of Mr Ifeanyi Dike, a suspected ritual killer from police custody.

The Rivers Police Command had paraded Dike for raping and killing Miss Victory Chikamso, an eight- year old girl residing in the same compound with him.

Mr Promise Wobo, a resident of Eliozu told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Port Harcourt that the protest was to call on the Rivers Police Command to re-arrest Dike.

Wobo said that it was an embarrassment to Nigeria for a suspected ritual killer to escape from police custody.

“It was our local vigilance team that caught him when he was attempting to dispose of the body.

“He was handed over to the police for interrogation and prosecution but it’s so unfortunate and embarrassing for him to have escaped from the custody.

“All we want is, the police should re-arrest the suspect and prosecute him together with the officer that allowed him to escape,” he said.

Mrs Alaerebo Jack, one of the protesters, said that the police had no excuse as to why the boy should escape from their custody.

Jack said that the protest was to call on the Rivers Government not to allow the police authority to bury the matter without justice.

“We are calling on Gov. Nyesom Wike to act within his powers to ensure that the police are made to re-arrest Dike to face prosecution.

“The killing of the eight- year old girl is ungodly and against the laws of the land but instead of the police to act professionally, they decided to allow the killer to escape,” she said.

Another resident of Eliozu, who participated in the protest, Mr Chike Boms, said that they had lost confidence in the Nigeria Police to protect them.

“If a ritual killer suspect that was handed over to the police can escape from custody, how can they even protect the citizens?

“The officer in-charge of the matter that allowed Dike to escape should be held responsible and dealt with while the police authority also sanitise their system,” he said.

Boms frowned at the decision of the police to disperse them with force.

The suspect, a 200 level undergraduate student of University of Port Harcourt, had earlier admitted to have committed the crime.

Dike confessed that his victim died when he was cutting-off parts of her body that was requested from him.

The victim’s body was mutilated as her eyes, private part and some fingers were removed.

Dr Earnest Mezuwuba, the father of the victim, urged the Police to ensure that the suspect was re-arrested to face the law.

Meanwhile, the Rivers Commissioner of Police, Mr Zaki Ahmed, said that the officer who was in charge of the case, Mr John Bosco, had been arrested and detained.

Ahmed also assured the people of Rivers that the police had deployed all necessary means at its disposal to re-arrest the suspect.

He said that the protesters were asked to open up the road they blocked and leave so that criminals would not exploit the protest to commit crime.

  • Three remanded for ‘killing don’ in Rivers

A Chief Magistrates’ Court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has ordered the remand in prison custody of three persons for allegedly kidnapping and killing a lecturer at the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), Dr. Eeba Lebarile.

The suspects are: Christopher Kinanee, the deceased’s gateman, 41; Lebari Robert Tambari, ex-police officer, who was the victim’s cousin, 48; and Ibrahim Useni, a foreigner from the Republic of Benin, 27.

The suspects were arrested between December 2015 and early this month.

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Ibrahim Idris, through his Special Monitoring Unit in the state, led by Ben Igwe, a deputy commissioner of police, investigated the killing.

Two other Benin Republic nationals allegedly involved in the crime are at large.

The IGP charged the suspects with conspiracy, kidnapping and murder.

The police lawyer, who is prosecuting for the IGP, Mr. Okon Monday Umana, told the court the suspects committed an offence punishable under sections 324,319(1), 516(1) of the Criminal Code Cap 37, Volume 2, Laws of Rivers State of Nigeria 1999 and sections, 1(1) (2)(a) of Rivers State kidnap (prohibitions) amendment law No.5 of 2015.

The Chief Magistrate, Andrew Jaja, ordered that the charge be read out to them, but they were not allowed to take plea.

He said the court lacked power to entertain the charge, being a capital offence punishable with maximum sentence.

Jaja ordered that the original case file be duplicated and handed over to the court registrar, to forward same to the Office of the State Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

He adjourned the case till September 28 for report of DPP advice.

Dr. Lebari of the Department of Management, Faculty of Management Sciences, University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), was reportedly kidnapped from his Mercyland Estate home on East West Road, in Obio/Akpor Local Government, on October 17, 2015.

His abductors allegedly called his younger brother, who is overseas, to demand N1.5 million ransom.

The decayed body of the victim was recovered from a shallow grave in his house.

The first accused (guard, who allegedly sold the victim’s galaxy phone, showed the police where the deceased was buried.

Investigations are on to unravel the mystery behind his kidnap and death.
