  • Groups call for unity in Rivers APC

Four groups in the Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have called for unity in the main opposition party, while kicking against anointing of governorship candidate for Rivers APC in 2019.

The groups, the Movement for Progressive Change, the Rivers Network for Positive Change,  M30 and Ogoni Democratic Movement, in their separate meetings in Port Harcourt yesterday, urged the APC leader in Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, who is the Transportation Minister, to ensure a level-playing field for governorship aspirants.

The President of the Movement for Progressive Change, Prince Akwekwe, decried the wave of intimidation that had permeated all levels of the APC in Rivers State.

Akwekwe said: “Sadly, most of the people who took risks for Rivers APC before, during and after the 2015 general elections have been abandoned. Party loyalty has been reduced to loyalty to an aspirant that has been programmed to be anointed by those who believe they own the party.”

The Publicity Secretary of Rivers Network for Positive Change, Bethel Chigozie, also stated that the biggest problem confronting the Rivers APC was disunity.

The President-General of M30, Amb. Anosike Orduwa said: “For the past two years, our members have been suffering. There is no empowerment  from any quarter.

The President of Ogoni Democratic Movement, Goddy Bazaari, called on the leaders of the APC to concentrate more on how to create jobs for members of the party.

  • ‘Rivers govt is working with security agencies to free kidnapped medical doctor’

The Deputy Governor of Rivers State, Dr. Ipalibo Harry-Banigo, has assured that the Nyesom Wike’s administration is collaborating with the security agencies in the state to ensure the unconditional release unhurt of a kidnapped medical doctor, Alex Akani, of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH).

She noted that as a medical doctor and mother, she was deeply pained by the kidnap and sometimes gruesome murder of medical doctors by assailants.

Harry-Banigo, yesterday in Port Harcourt, pointed out that by training and the Hippocratic Oath sworn to by medical doctors, they were trained  and obliged to save lives at all times, wondering why anybody would want to harm a medical doctor, pointing out that even at war times, medical doctors were spared.

She also pleaded with the Medical and Dental Consultants of UPTH to suspend the proposed strike, occasioned by the kidnap of Dr. Akani.

Stop promoting conflict, South-South group advises Wike

Chairperson of South-South Political Congress (SSPC), Mrs Ibifuro Tatua, on Tuesday advised Gov. Nyesom Wike of Rivers to stop promoting political conflicts with his utterances.

She told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Port Harcourt that some of Wike’s utterances were unbecoming of a governor.

Tatua advised the governor to focus on the governance of the state and desist from constant expression of anger and attack on perceived opponents, including Transport Minister, Mr Chibuike Amaechi.

She said that the people expected the governor to continue from where “his benefactor stopped but he appears to be a wrong partner for peace and progress’’.

According to her, a governor who stoops to tale-telling and spreading the seeds of discord in the state cannot be seen as a role model for the younger ones.

Tatua also congratulated former governor of Bayelsa, Chief Timipre Sylva on his 53rd birth anniversary, and urged him to continue to impact positively in the lives of the people.

She commended Sylva for his performance and contributions to the socio-political and economic development of Bayelsa and the country.
    .
“We congratulate Sylva and wish him success in his current and future endeavours, and we are pleading with him to concentrate his energy on ensuring that Bayelsa has its place in Nigeria,’’ said.

He stated that the judiciary had affirmed what Rivers people always knew, that their votes were rightfully given to the APC.

Peterside, who was the governorship candidate of the APC in Rivers state during the 2015 election, spoke with reporters yesterday in Port Harcourt.

He noted that the victory of Abe, a former Secretary to the Rivers State Government (SSG), was not only victory for the people of Rivers Southeast Senatorial District, but the entire state, stressing that the senator had once again deepened the believe in the judiciary.

He said: “The people of Rivers Southeast Senatorial District will continue to stand by the votes they gave to Senator Magnus Abe to represent them in the National Assembly.

“I have always said that APC will win any free and fair election in Rivers State. Our people are today seeing a directionless Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)-led Rivers State government, foisted on us. APC will surely take over Rivers State in 2019.”

The NIMASA chief also urged Abe, Wihioka and Wanjoku not to be deterred in their quests to bring dividends of democracy to their district and constituents.

Speaking on the loss of APC’s Maureen Tamuno and Sampson Egop at the election petitions tribunal, Peterside, a former member of the House of Representatives, urged them not to lose hope.

Abe described the judgment at the election petitions tribunal in Abuja as victory for all Rivers people.

He also lauded the judiciary on the landmark judgement, in a petition filed by Olaka Worgu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Abe lauded the people of Rivers Southeast senatorial district for the massive support.

The senator, in a statement yesterday by his Spokesperson, Parry Benson, urged Worgu and his supporters to join hands with him to move the senatorial district and Rivers state forward.

Abe, a former Secretary to the Rivers State Government (SSG), stated that what should be of paramount concern to every person from the senatorial district was the dividends of democracy, while assuring them that very soon they would benefit immensely for voting for him.

He said: “I want to congratulate the judiciary and all Rivers people. This is a victory for all of us and all those who believe in democracy and due process.

“At this point, l will like to plead with everybody that it is time to let go of this quagmire and give the people of our senatorial district the opportunity to benefit from the dividends of democracy.

“I thank all those who voted for me and all those who did not vote for me. I thank God Almighty who has made all things possible.”

Abe assured that he would put in his best in the service of the people of his senatorial district, Rivers state and Nigeria.

We will support Buhari’s peace initiatives -Ex-militant leaders

Ex-militant leaders of phases 2 and 3 had resolved in Port Harcourt, Rivers, to support President Muhammadu Buhari’s peace initiatives for the region.

This decision followed a crucial meeting between Coordinator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP), Brig.-Gen. Paul Boroh (Rtd) and the ex-militant leaders.

According to a statement signed by Ms Stella Inametti, Media and Communication Dept, PAP, on Saturday in Abuja, the meeting is aimed at peace building and conflict resolution among the groups and the Amnesty office.

The statement quoted Boroh also the Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta, as saying it is imperative for the leaders to meet regularly with officials of the Amnesty Programme.

“To share ideas, make observations and proffer solutions that will bring about peace, infrastructural change and human capital development of thousands of the youth captured in the PAP.

He emphasised that conflict and violence were no resolutions to crisis.

He tasked the leaders to constantly remind the ex-agitators in their camps not to breach the peace in the country.

The presidential aide noted that they should ensure that the non-violence agreement signed at Obubra that led to the declaration of Amnesty in 2009 was upheld.

Boroh urged the leaders to use all channels of dialogue in solving problems to allow government’s developmental projects like the rail construction, modular refineries and the community pipeline surveillance to take off.

He said that it would be of benefits to the people and create massive job employment opportunity for the youth of the region.

The Presidential aide called on the people of the region and Nigerians to take ownership of President Buhari’s peace and development initiatives for the region.

Also, the Special Assistant to the President on Economic Council, Mr Donald Wokoma, said the Amnesty office is tasked with the responsibility of ensuring peace and stability in the region in collaboration with other agencies.

Wokoma advised the ex-agitatators to take advantage of opportunities made available by government to develop themselves and stop unfounded petitioning of appointees.

The Amnesty Office’s Head of Data Management Major Bernard Ochoche (Rtd) and Head, Post Training and Engagement, Major Abdul Mati (Rtd) had in separate speeches addressed issues of late payment of stipends to ex-agitators arising from delay in budget passage.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the Amnesty office has reached out to the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board(NABDA) to engage 3,200 beneficiaries, trained in oil and gas related fields.

  • Rivers PDP insists ex-governor’s wife collected money from govt officials

Rivers State chapter of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has insisted that Mrs. Judith Amaechi, the wife of Minister of Transportation, forced members of Rivers State House of Assembly and Local Government Council Chairmen to contribute money in financing her pet project, Empowerment Support Initiatives, (ESI) during the tenure of her husband.

The Publicity Secretary of the party, Samuel Nwanosike, at a news conference in Port Harcourt yesterday, alleged that  Amaechi’s wife was after politicians who did not contribute to her project.

He said some of the Council Chairmen and Assembly members that refused to do her bidding were denied the opportunity of being re-elected back to their former position.

Nwanosike said the former Chairman of Obio Akpor Local Government Area,  Timothy Nsrim was removed  from office because he refused to contribute  money to Judith’s ESI.

“The evidence is very glaring and it’s not hidden. The wife of Minister of Transportation coaxed and intimidated council officials to pay certain amount of money to her pet project, ESI. Members of the State House of Assembly were forced to divert their constituency projects into building of schools in her ESI”

“So many of them complied and those that did not comply were denied  a return ticket to their former position. Some of the council chairmen protested. Late Precious Oforji who was the Council Chairman of Oyigbo Local Government Area led a protest against such illegal levy.”

“Some women that contributed money under her vehicle empowerment programme are still crying today because the money they contributed in the scheme were not given back to them.”

  • Ikoyi cash: Rivers APC accuses Wike of fresh plot to tarnish Amaechi’s image

Ikoyi cash: Rivers APC accuses Wike of fresh plot to tarnish Amaechi’s image

    •He was indicted, says governor

The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC),  yesterday said it has uncovered a plot by Governor Nyesom Wike of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to tarnish the image of Minister of Transportation  Rotimi Amaechi, who is the leader of APC in the state, on the Ikoyi cash.

Rivers APC, through its Publicity Secretary, Chris Finebone, noted that the plot to rubbish Amaechi, the immediate governor of the state, would involve manifest falsehood, soon to be placed in the media.

Wike, however, alleged that Amaechi was indicted for stealing billions of public funds, by a court-approved judicial panel of inquiry, set up by his administration.

The main opposition APC in Rivers also revealed that the plot against the transportation minister would involve extensive forgeries and fabrications of various seemingly-sensitive documents to further buttress the lie that the Osborne Road, Ikoyi money, confiscated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), belonged to Amaechi and that he allegedly obtained it from the coffers of Rivers government, while he was governor of the state.

The party said: “Initially, when Wike claimed that the Osborne Road, Ikoyi money belonged to Rivers State, the EFCC presented an ample opportunity for the Rivers governor to step forward and provide evidence and possibly pick up the money, but he (Wike) chickened out, until the period granted by the court elapsed. Wike did not take advantage of that window, because he had no iota of evidence and he knew it. The present devilish efforts by Wike to pour tar on Amaechi will go the futile way of the governor’s previous efforts.

“APC is saddened that more than two years after being sworn in as the governor of Rivers State, Wike is still hell-bent on destroying the image of his former boss, benefactor and predecessor. We wish to remind him that his evil plans for the man who gave him a lift in life will continue to fail to his grief.

“We note that instead of aimlessly deceiving himself in his cocoon of self-delusion that he can bring down Amaechi, the APC would like the Rivers governor to settle the scores he has with his own dishonorable reputation of lies and deceit.

“Wike stood before God and men in a church in Etche LGA of Rivers State to lie, when he claimed that the Federal Government was undermining his government by slashing the state’s monthly allocations. He refused to tell the truth that he had earlier pledged a good chunk of the state’s future monthly allocations as collateral security to commercial banks for the huge loans he took at double digit interest rate.

“Like in the case of the federal allocations, the Rivers governor recently told another group of clergymen during a church programme that the Federal Government paid the state only N17 billion as refund on Paris Club loan and not N34 billion, as claimed by the Federal Government. However, evidence made available to the APC by officials of Federal Ministry of Finance indicates that Wike actually signed and collected N34 billion as Paris Club loan refund for Rivers State.”

Rivers APC also stated that it was convinced that Wike, fearing that his lies were about to be made public, decided to raise spurious allegations against the minister of transportation, being his usual style of diverting attention and shifting the focus of public scrutiny from himself.

It noted that if indeed the Rivers governor had any credible evidence that the Ikoyi cash belonged to Amaechi or Rivers government, he would have joyfully approached the EFCC and the court to claim the money, stressing that the present attempt to raise spurious claims, through concocted documents, was mere smokescreen to cover up the obvious lack of transparent governance by Wike.

APC called on Rivers people in particular and Nigerians in general to disregard all forms of fabricated stories that Wike was about floating in the public space through print and electronic media, as well as on the Internet, maintaining that it would continue to deconstruct, demobilise and discredit the grand deceit that the Rivers governor and his mafia government represented.

Wike, through Rivers Commissioner for Information and Communications, Dr. Austin Tam-George, also accused Amaechi of relocating to Port Harcourt to impose a governor on Rivers state, through subterfuge and electoral gerrymandering in 2019, describing the actions as a classic case of a rapist returning to his victim to ask for love.

Rivers governor said: “It is important to constantly remind a forgetful public, that Mr. Amaechi was indicted for stealing billions of public funds, by a court-approved judicial panel of inquiry, set up by the State Government.

“Even by the standards of Nigerian political misbehavior, Mr. Amaechi’s record presents a unique and intriguing specimen.

“Here is a man, whose brazen refusal to pay pensioners their entitlements for six months, contributed to the deaths of hundreds of senior citizens in Rivers State, between 2014 and 2015.

“Mr. Amaechi’s thoughtless policies and reckless public spending literally broke the economic spine of Rivers State. His administration was marked by myth making and public deceit.

“Throughout the 2015 political campaigns, the APC presented itself as a better alternative to the PDP. Mr Amaechi’s adjectival insistence that he is the ‘leader’ of the APC in Rivers State is the clearest indication of the moral carcass that the party of ‘change’ has become in Nigeria.”

Wike admonished Rivers people and other Nigerians to ignore the lies of Amaechi and his factionalised APC.

  • Wike wants true federalism

    Wike wants true federalism

Gov. Nyesom Wike of Rivers in Port Harcourt on Tuesday called for true federalism in Nigeria to enable each part of the country to develop according to its ability.

The governor  made the call when he hosted the U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr William Symington, the governor’s  Special Assistant on Electronic Media, Mr Simeon Nwakaudu, said in a statement.

He explained that Rivers people wanted true federalism because they wanted a country where all the federating units were allowed to develop according to their resources.

Wike said that the demand for true federalism meant that Rivers people believed in one united Nigeria, where no section was denied the control of its own resources.

He urged the U.S. Government to set up a visa office in Port Harcourt to cater to the South-South and the Southeast geo-political zones.

“We are clamouring for true federalism, when you talk of true federalism, they think you don’t want to be part of the country.

“We talk about true federalism as practised in America, a true presidential system where all the federating units will be allowed to enjoy their resources and contribute to the centre,” Wike said.

He said the people believed that there must be a country called Nigeria in which  everyone  would work together to achieve unity and progress.

The governor said Rivers people sought to be treated with equity, fairness and justice.

He said that the right framework should be established to ensure that all the states excelled at their own pace.

Wike said that the visa office would be in the spirit of equity and justice as the Abuja office served the North, while the Lagos office served the South-West.

He said Rivers  was safe for investments and promised that  his administration would partner investors to enable them to benefit from their investments.

“Forget about the media propaganda, this state is an opposition state, therefore don’t expect them to say it is the best.

“But we are the best state, we are doing everything to ensure that investors  do profitable business under the ambit of the law,” the governor said.

The ambassador commended Nigerians for their unity  and added: “Nigeria will be great and I expect a super power and a super partner.”

  • NDDC to revive rice mills in Rivers, Akwa Ibom

NDDC to revive rice mills in Rivers, Akwa Ibom

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) will soon revive its rice processing plants, with a combined capacity of 210 metric tonnes per day, at Elele Alimini in Rivers State and Mbiabet-Ikpe in Akwa Ibom State.

The NDDC Managing Director, Mr. Nsima Ekere, said this after inspecting the 180 tonnes per day facility at Elele Alimini on Tuesday. He expressed displeasure with the non-utilisation of the rice mill which was completed in 2008.

He lamented that the firm engaged to run the facility allowed it to lie fallow for ten years, an action he described as “unconscionable,” noting that the situation would be redressed urgently. He added: “What is important is to get this facility up and running, and stop the huge waste of government resources. We will negotiate with private investors and set the process rolling in the next couple of weeks.”

Ekere stated that the resuscitation of the two rice mills would encourage the local communities to grow more rice, and expand the agricultural value chain.”You can’t put the kind of resources that NDDC committed to this project and then allow it to just lie waste,” he said.

The NDDC Chief Executive Officer stated that the wasting rice mill in Elele Alimini had the capacity to impact positively on the Nigerian economy, adding that it could have created many jobs and increased the country’s Gross Domestic Product, GDP.

He said: “Nigeria as a country is still importing a lot of rice and we spend billions of dollars importing food, yet we have a facility here that can actually help to reduce the amount we spend on food imports and we just leave it idle. Going forward, we will immediately go into partnership with the private sector to put this facility to use. We want to see that this mill is functional, so that we can begin to employ people.

“Hundreds of Nigerians will be gainfully employed if we get this facility working and functional. Many other people will be employed indirectly.”

Ekere explained that the re-activation of the rice mills would also encourage local farmers to produce more rice, noting that the Commission “will develop what we call out-growers scheme where members of the communities will be encouraged to grow rice.”

He said that NDDC would provide seedlings and other technical support to encourage local farmers to increase their production knowing that they would have a guaranteed market. According to him, three months after they produce, their products will be bought and the economy in the rural communities will be positively affected and wealth will be created for the people. That is what we want to do.”

Ekere said that NDDC would do everything possible to ensure that farmers derived maximum benefits from the rice mills so as to guarantee massive cultivation and production of rice in the Niger Delta.

The NDDC boss assured that the contract terms for the operation of the rice mill would be reviewed because the contractor had failed to perform. He added: “We will terminate the existing contract because the contractor evidently does not have the capacity to run the facility. What is important to me and the government is to get this facility to be functional so that we can put food on the table of Nigerians.
