    No fewer than 19 persons died while eight others were injured in an auto crash on Sunday on the Lokoja-Obajana Road, Kogi State.

    The Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kumar Tsukwam, confirmed the accident.

    Tsukwam said some of the survivors sustained injuries.

    He said among the dead were five children.

    He explained  that the accident occurred around 4 p.m at Gadabiu community of the state.

    According to him, the accident involved an articulated vehicle and a Toyota Hummer Bus heading to Abuja.

    He said the bus which he alleged to be on high speed, while attempting  to overtake another vehicle,  collided with the articulated vehicle travelling in the opposite direction.

    His words: “It was very unfortunate, because it was caused by speeding and wrongful overtaking and involved 27 persons with only eight survivors.

    “Our rescue operation team and the police were able to rescue the eight survivors and rushed them to Fisayo Hospital, Obajana for immediate medical attention.”

    The commander appealed to motorists to keep to traffic rules and regulations and avoid speeding.

    Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, has expressed sorrow over the road accident.

    Ododo described the incident as a loss, not only to the families of the victims but to the whole state.

    Special Adviser to the governor on Media, Ismaila Isah, called for stricter enforcement of regulations and discipline by road users.

    The governor said: “Losing 19 lives, including innocent children, in one accident is a tragedy for which words cannot fully express our grief. Our hearts are heavy and thoughts and prayers are with the families affected, and we must take urgent steps to prevent such sorrowful occurrences. Every life matters, and no journey is worth the risk of over speeding.’’

    Ododo commended the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and Nigeria Police for responding swiftly to the accident and rescuing the survivors.

    Meanwhile, Chairman of Mopamuro Local Government, Ademola Bello, has issued an Executive Order, his spokesman, Olowu Juwon, said to empower security agencies to regulate public gatherings and prosecute anyone who violates the order.

    Nineteen people died while five sustained injuries in a road accident that occured at Kanbi village, new Jebba road in Kwara state.

    The crash, which occurred at about 8pm on Thursday, involved two vehicles, a blue Iveco trailer with no registration and a white Toyota Hiace bus with registration number LSD363YE.

    Spokesperson of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Corps Commander Olusegun Ogungbemide, announced this in a statement on Friday, June 14.

    Ogungbemide said preliminary investigation revealed that the crash occured as a result of excessive speed and wrongful overtaking.

    He said: “A total of 25 people were involved, comprising 13 male adults, five female adults, two female children and five male children. From this number, five people were injured (three male adults and two female adults), and 19 victims killed (11 male adults, three female adults, three male children, and two female children.

    “The injured victims have been rescued to Orisun Ayo hospital.One corpse was deposited at the morgue of the same hospital while the remaining 18 dead bodies were claimed by the families of the deceased.”

    Ogungbemide said the FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, had expressed “displeasure over the alarming rate of recklessness of drivers who have continued to contravene established traffic regulations and causing undue harm to lives and unprecedented destruction to properties.”

    “In line with his 2024 agenda for drastic reduction in road carnage’s, the Corps Marshal has directed Commanding Officers to intensify special patrol operations against these identified violations,” he added.

    A male individual sustained injuries in several road accidents at Anthony along the Gbagada-Oshodi Expressway, Lagos.

    The combined efforts of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) operatives and officials from the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LSAMBUS) resulted in the successful rescue of the man from the accident scene.

    The Nation learnt that the driver of a ‘Suzuki’ minibus marked EKY 299 YC while on top speed struggled the right of way (R.O.W) with other vehicles.

    The vehicle suddenly developed brake failure and rammed into two other vehicles – a Toyota Corolla with number plate GGE 824 JA and a Toyota Venza marked KSF 954 HG on top of Anthony Bridge.

     LASTMA Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Taofiq Adebayo, said the rescued victim sustained serious internal injuries.

    Adebayo added that LASTMA officials have cleared all accidental vehicles off the road and handed them over to Policemen from the Ilupeju Police Division for further investigation.

    He said the injured man was rushed to General Hospital at Ikeja by Officials of the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS).

    General Manager of LASTMA Olalekan Bakare-Oki appealed to the motoring public to desist from competing right of way with other vehicles and ensure that the braking system of their vehicle is in good condition before embarking on any journey within or outside the state.

  • Five die in Bauchi-Jos road crash

    The Federal Road Safety Corps, Bauchi State Sector Command on Sunday, confirmed the death of  five persons in a ghastly motor accident on  Bauchi-Jos federal highway.

    The Nation gathered that the accident involved a trailer and a Peugeot 406, which had a head on collision, leading to the death of the five persons.

    Confirming the accident, FRSC spokesman Rilwan Suleiman, said  eight people were involved in the accident, but five persons were killed.

    He said the driver of the Peugeot 406 veered off his lane into the lane of the trailer.

    Suleiman said the  driver of the trailer did all he could to avoid him, but the two vehicles were over speeding.

    “The trailer had a speed mark of about 50 to 60 meters before hitting the 406.

    “And as a result, all the occupants of the 406 – two women and three men – sustained severe injuries. Our men immediately rushed to the scene after receiving the information and rushed them to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, Bauchi for medical attention. Unfortunately, they were confirmed dead on arrival by a medical doctor.”

    Suleiman added that because of the impact of the accident, it took them hours before they succeeded in removing the trailer from the Peugeot.

    “The trailer crushed the Peugeot and it was under the trailer. We had to seek for the services of two cranes and it took us several hours before we were able to separate the two vehicles,” he stated.

  • Nine die in Ekiti road crash

    Nine persons died yesterday in an accident at Igede town in Ekiti State.

    One other person was seriously injured in the crash.

    The bodies and blood of the victims littered the road.

    The accident occurred at 6.15 a.m in front of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office on Igede-Awo Road.

    The nine persons reportedly died on the spot. The injured was taken to a hospital.

    People wept profusely at the sight of the mangled bodies of the victims, including one with a severed head.

    The accident involved an 18-seater Toyota Hiace Hummer bus with registration number (Lagos) EKY 978 XJ and a DAF marked (Yobe) XB 404 FKA.

    An eyewitness said the bus ran into the truck, which was reportedly conveying planks, losing control and causing the truck to equally lose control.

    The Public Education Officer of Ekiti Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr. Mohammed Olowo, attributed the possible cause of the crash to “speeding and loss of control”.

    Olowo added that the bodies of victims had been deposited at the morgue of the Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido-Ekiti (FETHI).

    He urged motorists to exercise caution while driving and obey traffic rules.

  • Two Customs officers die in road crash

    Two Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) officers died in an auto crash on Saturday, The Nation learnt yesterday.

    The officers simply identified as Usman and Kabiru, died on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.

    It was gathered that their Toyota Camry marked YLA121BJ was crushed by an oncoming Toyota Avalon with number-plate YAB366JY.

    A source said the operatives died on the spot, while the driver of the other vehicle, was rushed to the hospital.

    According to the Commander, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in Badagry, Fatai Bakare, the accident was caused by over speeding.

    He said: “The accident happened around 8am on Saturday. The customs officers were inside their vehicle at one of the checkpoints on the Lagos-Seme Road. The driver of the Avalon was on speed when he crashed into them.

    “He veered off the road and rammed into them. The two customs officers died on the spot, while the man responsible for the accident is in a coma. One other person was also seriously injured and has been hospitalised.”

  • 10 killed in Abeokuta-Ibadan road crash

    TEN persons died yesterday at Olokuta Village corridor of the Abeokuta-Ibadan Expressway when a truck crashed into a bus.

    The accident, which occurred, about 7:30 am, involved a truck, marked BDG 7I4 XE and a Toyota Liteace, registered as EKY I85 XH.

    The truck was conveying empty bottles of beer and heading for Abeokuta from Ibadan when the driver lost control.

    The truck driver was said to have sustained injuries. Ten passengers, comprising two women and eight men in the bus, died.

    Among the dead was the bus driver.

    Operatives of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Odeda Unit of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), Vigilante Service of Ogun State (VSO) and the police helped victims on the scene.

    TRACE’s Public Relations Officer (PRO) Babatunde Akinbiyi said the victims were taken to Adeoyo Hospital in Ibadan by FRSC, Ibadan command.

    He added that the truck driver was in custody of Odeda Divisional Police Headquarters in Ogun State.

    Three die in Kogi road crash

    No fewer than three persons have reportedly died in a motor accident at a spot in Ochadamu, Ofu Local Government Area of Kogi State.

    The Kogi State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr. Olusegun Martins who disclosed this to newsmen in Lokoja yesterday, said that the accident occurred on Sunday morning.

    According to him, nine people were involved in the accident, but six of them sustained different degree of injuries, while three died on the spot.

    The sector commander said that four vehicles; a Toyota bus, a saloon car and two trailers loaded with cement were involved in the accident.

    He said that all the victims, including those that lost their lives and the injured were taken to the Anyigba Teaching Hospital, in Dekina LGA of the state.

    The Sector Commander who attributed the accident to overspeading, wrongful over taking and loss of control, assured that full investigation will be carried out later.

    He called on motorists to adhere to all the road regulations and desist from wrongful overtaking and over speeding, adding that it is always imperative to take extra care during the ember months of the year.

    12 killed in Ondo road crash

    Twelve persons reportedly lost their lives Saturday afternoon in a lone road crash involving a Toyota Hiace bus carrying 20 passengers while eight others sustained serious injuries.

    The carnage was said to have occurred on yet-to-be completed Ajowa-Gedegede road brigde.

    According to Onigedegede of Igedegede,Oba Walidu Ekun,it was the deafening sound of the vehicle around 3.00 pm that attracted symphatisers to the scene.

    The spot which was littered with blood and mangled bodies of the dead travellers caused emotions,as motorists and passers-by wailed profusely.

    Confirming the incident,Ondo State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps(FRSC), Vincent Jack, said his men went on rescue operation and took the corpses to Ikare-Akoko State Specialist Hospital Mortuary while critical ones had been reffered to Federal Medical Centre(FMC)Owo.

    Jack attributed the incident to recklessness of the driver,urging Motorists to be cautious on highways and avoid excessive speeding.

  • Pastor, three others die in Bayelsa crash

    A pastor identified as Adama and three other persons have been feared dead in a motors accident that occurred along the Ammassoma-Yenagoa road in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

    It was gathered that many others sustained various degrees of injuries in the crash that happened at about 3pm on Sunday.

    Among the injured casualties was a 300-level student of the state-owned Niger Delta University (NDU), Miss Debora Willimor.

    Willimor had a broken leg and was rushed to the Gloryland Medical Centre but was later relocated to a traditional bone healer by her family.

    Eyewitnesses said that the accident involved a 14-seater bus and a private car adding that over-speeding and reckless overtaking caused the crash.

    The Police Public Relations Officer, Butwat Asinim, who confirmed the incident gave the registration number of the bus and the car as Yen 279 KA AU 162 USL.

    He said the vehicles were involved in head-on collision.

    Bayelsa Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) could not give details of the accident as most of its personnel said they were yet to visit the accident scene.

    But Butswat said one person was confirmed dead on the spot.

    One of the survivors of the accident, identified as Miss Tare, a clerical officer at the Federal University, Otuoke said they were returning to Yenagoa from Amasoma when the incident happened.

    She thanked God for surviving the accident.
