  • Infant dies in Ogun road crash

    A baby below one year of age died yesterday in an accident on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

    Twenty-two people were critically injured.

    The accident occurred close to Sagamu in Ogun State around 4pm.

    The Sagamu Unit Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr. Lasisi Ogundele, said the tyre of the bus conveying the victims burst and the vehicle somersaulted.

    Ogundele said the bus, marked OS 46 A06, was coming from Lagos and conveying Muslims believed to be members of the Nasrullahi il Fatihu (NASFAT).

    He said: “The driver was on top speed when it lost one of its front tyres. It somersaulted several times and swerved to the Ibadan-Lagos side of the road.

    “The baby died on the spot. Four other babies and 18 adults are on the danger list as we speak. They were critically injured. The remains of the baby had been deposited at Idera hospital. The injured are receiving treatment at the same hospital.

    “We warn motorists against over speeding and buying used tyres. When you buy used tyres, it is like attempting suicide, because most of those tyres expired before they were brought into the country.”

  • Six dead,13 injured in road crash in Delta

    Six persons have been confirmed dead and 13 others injured in an accident involving two Toyota Hiace buses.

    One of the crashed buses with registration number DT 19 B28 belonged to the Delta State-owned transport outfit. The other with registration number XC 597 WWR was identified as a commercial bus.

    Sources said the crash occurred at the weekend at about 12.40pm in Urhonigbe, a border town between Edo and Delta states on the Agbor-Abraka Expressway.

    The Unit Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Umutu-Ebedei Unit Rs 5.27, Bibian Ojialor, confirmed the incident.

    Ojialor, who is in-charge of Ukwuani and Ethiope East local governments, said 19 persons were involved in the crash.

    Six of them, he said, died while the others were injured.

    According to the Unit Commander, their remains had been deposited in a morgue while the injured are receiving treatment at the Central Hospital, Agbor.

    She attributed the cause of the accident to dangerous overtaking and over speeding.

    Ms Ojialor advised motorists to be very careful on the road by obeying traffic regulations, stressing the need to avoid over speeding, overloading, dangerous overtaking and reckless driving.

  • Five die in Delta road crash

    Five members of a family yesterday died in an accident on the Onitsha-Benin Expressway.

    The accident occurred at Ubulu-Okiti Junction in Aniocha South Local Government Area of Delta State.

    It was gathered that the victims were travelling from Ekiti State to Awka in Anambra State.

    Sources said the Toyota Hilux conveying them lost one of its tyres and skidded off the road.

    The victims include a man, his expectant wife, two children (a male and a female) and a steward.

    The bodies of the victims were evacuated by men of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

    They have been deposited at the mortuary of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Asaba.

    An 82-year-old relative of the victims, a woman, who was also in the vehicle, miraculously survived the accident. Another passenger, also a member of the family, was rushed to the intensive care unit of the FMC.
