    Robbery suspects arrested

    OFFICERS of the Nigeria Police code-named Safer High Way Patrol, yesterday arrested two robbery suspects on Ekakpamre-Jeremi Road in Ughelli South Local Government of Delta State, for allegedly being in possession of firearms.

    The suspects, Godspower Peter, 18 and Voke Samuel, 15, were nabbed with a double barrel cut-to-size gun and a fabricated single barrel gun with four rounds of cartridges.

    One of the suspects, Peter, said in a statement: “I am a motorcycle rider. The four boys asked me to carry them from Agbarho in Ughelli North to Otujeremi in Ughelli South and I charged them N1, 000. They agreed.

    “They appealed to me to tow their motorcycle, which was bad. On our way, we saw a police checkpoint. We were searched and two guns and bullets were found in the bags they carried. The boys fled into a nearby swamp.”

    The Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) in Ughelli Area Command, Mr. Usman Ndanbabo, said his men arrested the suspects on a motorcycle while carrying a black polythene bag, which contained cut-to-size guns, with one of the bullets already used, indicating that they were coming from a robbery.

    He said the four suspects jumped into a swamp and his men pursued them, but could only arrest two.

    Ndanbabo, who said the suspects made statements, added that the command will not relent in its efforts to make the area crime-free.

    The Enugu State Police Command has said it has arrested two robbery suspects, who have tormented the residents of Achara Layout in the Enugu metropolis.

    Spokesman Ebere Amaraizu told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu that the suspects had been attacking the area for over two months.

    He said they were nabbed after a response to a distress call.

    Amaraizu said: “The criminals and their cohorts, now at large, operated at a shop at gunpoint at Awkunanaw Street, Achara Layout, last Thursday about 4p.m. where they robbed a salesgirl of an undisclosed amount and valuables.

    “It was learnt that the suspects engaged the police in a gun duel. One of them hit by a bullet, Obumneme, was nabbed.

    “This led to the arrest of Emeka Oparaugo, alias Crossover.

    “Recovered from the suspects are locally-made pistols with double mouth and two mobile phones.’’

    He said the suspects were helping the police in their investigation.

    His words: “A manhunt for the fleeing members of the gang has been intensified.’’

    The command has begun investigation into a fire outbreak at Ogige Main Market, Nsukka, which occurred last Friday about 2:30 a.m.

    Amaraizu said the inferno gutted a storey building.

    NAN recalls that property worth millions of naira were destroyed.

    Operatives of the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Zone II, Onikan, have arrested 10 suspected robbers terrorising 15 Lagos and Ogun communities.

    The suspects – Lekan Akinola, Mutiu Oyekan, Akeem Sanusi, Olahusi Rasaq, Kazeem Oladipupo, Waheed Amusan and four others – were arrested on Tuesday after police tracked a mobile phone stolen from one of their victims at Arigbajo in Ogun months ago.

    It was gathered the unnamed victim reported the case and the Zonal Intervention Squad (ZIS) was deployed to fish out the hoodlums.

    The Nation learnt the detectives, with the cooperation of police ICT experts, arrested Akinola, who led the team to his accomplices.

    The zonal police spokesman Muyiwa Adejobi said the suspects confessed to have robbed residents of Ibafo, Ifo, Ewekoro, Mowe, Adigbe in Abeokuta, Iju-Ota, Alakuko and Agege in Lagos.

    Adejobi said some of their victims were identified and their items recovered.

    He said: “Items recovered from them include refrigerators, laptops, plasma television sets, generators, wears, electrical appliances and their operational bus, a Mazda: Lagos BDG602XM.”

    “AIG Abdulmajid Ali directed that the suspects be charged to court, and that fleeing members of the gang be apprehended.”

    Police arrest 10 robbery suspects

    The Police have arrested 10 persons for alleged armed robbery in Lagos and Ogun states.

    Lekan Akinola, Mutiu Oyekan, Akeem Sanusi, Olahusi Rasaq, Kazeem Oladipupo, Waheed Amusan and four others were arrested after police tracked a mobile phone they allegedly stole from a victim at Arigbajo in Ogun State several months ago.

    “Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Zone II Abdulmajid Ali has directed that the suspects be charged to court.”

    The police in Lagos have arrested two suspected armed robbers  in Ilasamaja.

    Samuel Oladele, 24, and Chibueze Chikeze were apprehended on Tuesday while attempting to rob a bank customer.

    The suspects, said to be cultists, allegedly confessed to have robbed four customers, including a man from who they snatched N1.2million at gunpoint.

    It was learnt that policemen from Ilasa Division and Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) have been on the trail of the suspects following the robbery  complaints by banks in the area.

    A source said: “The banks were complaining that the customers were running to other areas because of those boys who use motorcycles to snatch people’s money.

    “So, undercover detectives were deployed to the area to monitor them. They went there, posed like bank customers and observed that a particular motorcycle kept roaming about.

    “As one of the policemen who entered the bank was coming out, he saw the boys attempting to snatch someone’s money and started pursuing them.

    “He notified others and they were chased by some policemen on motorcycles stationed around. The policemen double-crossed them and they fell. That was how they were arrested. They were searched and a locally made cut to size gun with five cartridges were recovered from them. The team also seized the motorcycle they used for the operation.

    “They confessed that they have robbed a customer of N1.2million and another of N70,000. They also confessed that it was the fifth time they were engaging in the act. They said that they usually shot stubborn victims. They have been moved to SARS for further investigation.”

    Contacted, the command’s spokesperson, Dolapo Badmos, a Superintendent of Police (SP) confirmed that the suspects were in SARS custody.

    •Car, arms, others recovered 

    The police have arrested two suspects, Ademola Oladunjoye and Olawale Idowu, who attacked and robbed a woman on Ilogbo Road at Otta, Ogun State on Democracy Day.

    The suspects were apprehended by police operatives attached to the Quick Respond Squad at Otta Area Police Command, who responded to a distress call.

    Police spokesman in Ogun State Olumuyiwa Adejobi, who confirmed this, said the operatives recovered one Sterling SMG rifle and one cut-to-size double-barrel gun with various calibre of ammunition from the suspects.

    Adejobi added that a Toyota Camry car marked LAGOS KTU 808 AS was recovered from them.

    According to him, other members of the gang escaped with one Honda Pilot SUV with Registration number LKJ 621 EA.

    Other items recovered from the robbers include charms, mobile phones and clothes.

    Also, police operatives attached to Agbado Division of the command foiled a robbery attack on Church Street in Agbado area of Ifo on Democracy Day after a gun duel with suspected bandits.

    The suspects managed to escape with bullet wounds, but two cut-to-size guns with ammunition were recovered from the site.

    Police Commissioner Abdulmajid Ali appealed to healthcare providers – orthodox and traditional – and the public to look out for people with bullet wounds and the stolen Honda Pilot with which the fleeing members of the robbery gang escaped.

    According to Ali, they should assist with information that could help the police in arrest of the suspects and recovery of stolen vehicle.

    The Rivers Police Command said on Thursday that it had arrested five robbery suspects at a pipeline, in Ubima, Ikwerre Local Government Area.

    DSP Ahmad Muhammad, the Public Relations Officer of the command, disclosed this in a statement in Port Harcourt.

    The statement said the suspects, all men, were arrested in the early hours of Thursday by a special team in charge of pipelines.

    It said weapons recovered from them were: two AK 47 rifles; one pump action gun; one bereta pistol; 19 rounds of assorted live ammunition; three magazines and eight cartridges.

    “ Preliminary investigation indicated that the gang was responsible for series of armed robbery and kidnappings around Ubima and environs, “it said.

    Two buried alive in Ondo for alleged N130,000 theft

    Two robbery suspects have been reportedly buried alive by two siblings at Igbokoda, headquarters of Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State for allegedly stealing N130,000.

    The siblings-Omoniyi Alaleran and Oluwaseun Enikuomehin- accused Igbekele Orisabinole and Ogbaro Erinbo of stealing their mother’s money.

    The siblings have been arrested by the police and transferred to the Special Investigative Bureau at the police headquarters in Akure, the state capital.

    It was gathered that their mother, Mrs. Ogunnuga, lost N130,000 and accused Orisabunole and Erinbo of stealing the money.

    She told her children who tortured the duo to confess and bring out the missing money.

    The deceased were said to have claimed innocence of the offence but the brothers refused to accept the pleas.

    After the torture, the suspects allegedly led the deceased inside a bush, dug a pit and pushed them inside and covered the pit up to their necks.

    Police spokesman Femi Joseph said the incident occurred at Omonira Street, Igbokoda on March 12.

    Joseph said: “We have almost concluded investigation on the matter. The suspects will be charged to court very soon.”

    •Recover 18 vehicles

    Eleven robbery suspects have been arrested by the police in Oyo State with 18 assorted vehicles recovered from them.

    The suspects, who were paraded yesterday at the state Police Headquarters, Eleyele, Ibadan, included two ex-convicts who were released from prison few weeks ago.

    Police Commissioner Leye Oyebade said the suspects have given confessional statements and they would soon be arraigned in court.

    The police boss said the command would continue to improve on its strategies to ensure that the state is rid of criminals.

    Oyebade said a gang of four- Olusola Adenle (37), Femi Rasaq (23), Paul Olaitan (20) and Sani Abdulahi (26) – broke into a house at Egbeda and carted away various household items.

    “The suspects, who were armed, had planned to attack their victims who might want to resist.

    “Investigations revealed that the hoodlums usually come from Ikire, Osun State. They are responsible for series of burglaries and robberies in Ibadan and other parts of the state,” he said.

    An ex-convict, Olaitan, said he was a Mass Communication student of the Polytechnic Ibadan before he was expelled from the school.

    Another ex-convict, Rasaq, said he went into crime because he was fond of it, adding that he is a trained barber.

    Michael Oladele (25), who was arrested while trying to sell a Nissan vehicle in Ekiti State, said he was forced into car snatching because he had no job.

    Recovered from the suspects were one locally made double barrel pistol, seven live cartridges, one Honda Accord with registration number JJJ 691AX, one Toyota Camry with registration number AKD 226 DN, anotherToyota Camry with registration number AAA 593 DL, one LG Plasma TV, one Toshiba Plasma TV, one unregistered Toyota Highlander, one green Toyota Highlander with registration number ABJ 42 KU and a grey unregistered Toyota Camry.

  • Police kill five robbery suspects in gun battle

    The police yesterday killed five suspected armed robbers and arrested one with bullet wounds.

    Sources told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ikeja, the Lagos State capital, that the suspects were killed in a gun battle with policemen from Elemoro Division, Ajah in Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area.

    “The police in Elemoro got information that the suspects were operating at Abule Parapo, opposite Awoyaya in Elemoro area of Ajah around 2am.

    “The suspects engaged the police in a shootout as soon as they saw them. Two locally made double barrel shot guns, one cutlass and iron cutter were recovered from them.

    “The gang had been terrorising residents of Ajah, robbing and raping women,” a source said.

    NAN reports that the casualities were brought to the Lagos State Police Command Headquarters in Ikeja at 12.15 p.m.

    The Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) has taken over the case file from the Elemoro Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Sani Limawa, a Superintendent.

    Contacted, the command’s spokesman, Joe Offor, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) said he had yet to get the details of the case.
