    Community Rotary club gets 57th President

    President and Chair of Chartered Institute of Directors Nigeria, Tijjani Borodo and business leader, Olu Akanmu, are among those to attend installation of Kayode Situ as 57th President of Rotary Club of Ikeja, District 9111.

    According to club spokesman, Segun Adebowale, the Sunday’s investiture at Lagos Sheraton Hotels and Suites, Ikeja, would enable the club to induct directors for 2024/2025 and raise funds for humanity.

    Founded 57 years ago, the club, first in the new district and eighth Rotary club in Nigeria, has a rich member list, including former District Governor, Julius Adelusi-Adeluyi, Olusegun Osunkeye, Michael Ade-Ojo, Olabintan Famutimi and Dipo Onabanjo.

    Adebowale said Borodo is the guest of honour, while Akanmu is guest speaker.

    Rotary Club 9141 canvasses support for leaders

    The district governor, Rotary Club District 9141, Emeke Utebor, has urged Nigerians to constructively engage their leaders rather than criticise without providing solutions.

    He said making the world a better place must be the responsibility of all Nigerians rather than of the leaders alone.

    He admonished citizens not to shy away from their civic duties, adding that protecting government projects was a veritable way to appreciate our leaders.

    Utebor, who spoke on the sidelines of the Rotary Club’s Joint District Conference, which was held in Asaba, Delta Capital, urged Rotarians to create hope in the world with appreciation.

    The joint district conference with the theme “Create Hope in the World” attracted over 3700 delegates from Edo, Delta, Bayelsa and Rivers States to its 4-day conference.

    Utebor’s tenure, who was installed district governor of District 9141 in June 2023, ends next month. He said the joint district conference was an opportunity for the Rotary Club to apprise their activities and chart the way forward.

    He commended executive members of District 9141 for their commitment during 2023/24 despite the economic crisis at the beginning of the year, adding that the targets set by his team were largely met irrespective of the challenges they faced.

    He said: “I want to use this opportunity to show my gratitude to my fellow Rotarians because anybody who shows gratitude attracts success. I urge them never to give up. We have been able to provide services ranging from the provision of portable water, supporting education, maternal and child health, protection of the environment, lighting up communities, and supporting security agencies.”

    He disclosed that the Rotary Club District 9141 recently donated a N150 million physiotherapy centre to the Delta state government, adding that work commenced on the project in 2016.

    He noted that a dialysis centre which was built by the non-profit organisation at the cost of 52,000 U.S dollars has been installed at Central Hospital, Agbor, Ika South LGA to boost services to the sick.

     According to him, fostering unity amongst members of District 9141 was his most significant achievement under his tenure.

    Utebor noted that the economic challenges including the astronomic rise in foreign exchange rates and, cash crunch faced by citizens also negatively affected the organisation in payment of their dues and project execution.

    He listed other achievements of his team’s provision of insurance policies for members. 

    He called on Rotarians “to support one another to provide service for the rest of the world.”

    Faith Revivalists Christian Mission (FRCM) Aladura, with Rotary International District 9110, has offered free treatment and drugs as well as mosquito nets to over 600 residents in Lagos at its headquarters in Somolu.

    The programme was part of Rotary Family Health Days, with clubs of Ikeja GRA, Gowon Estate and Ipaja New Dawn taking part.

    Olubukola Olarenwaju said the programme, known as Rotary Action Group for Family Health and Aids Prevention Inc (Rfha), was a success. She said beneficiaries commended it, saying some drugs and treatment they could not afford in private  hospitals and clinics, they got free at the programme.

    She added the programme was for all – Christians and non-Christians – and across gender and ages. “We have been doing it for over 20 years. Before, there were no referrals. But this year, we had such cases as well as more drugs and treatment. The programme is three times yearly, coming up again in June or July. It is not against our teaching or doctrine. We believe in divine as well as medical healing,’’ Olarenwaju added.

    Praising Rotary, she advised Nigerians check their health status. “Always check your health status. Don’t wait. Don’t assume that nothing is wrong, she said.

    Medic in charge, Dr Ayoola Michael of May Clinic, Lagos, said malaria, hypertension, diabetes, upper respiratory infections, Hepatitis B, and pepic ulcer dominated the cases, adding only one patient had HIV “and he didn’t know”.

    Rotary Club spends N2.5m on 50 widows, youths

    As part of its empowerment scheme, Rotary Club of Abule-Egba has donated bags of rice and cartons of cooking oil to 50 widows. It also gave out fumigation machines to youths to enable them to be self-employed.

    In all, the club spent N2.5 million on the gifts, said its President, Raphael Oyebamijo, at the presentation in Ikeja, Lagos. He described the gifts as their ‘star’ project.

    He added that they have been empowering members of their community in the past 40 years. “We will execute more projects in the future. Thus, we are looking forward to getting donations from our friends and families to enable us to do so,” he said.

    District 9110 Governor, Rita Ifeyinwa Ejezie, whose official visit to the club coincided with the presentation, expressed satisfaction with the club, saying that despite the economic downturn, they were able to give a good account of themselves.

    She said: “Rotary Club of Abule-Egba is a good club. Indeed, it is one of the good clubs in the district. I am happy that they are doing well.

    That is what Rotary is known for: doing good to the world. They should continue the good work.”

    Rotary Club seeks media collaboration to empower 600 youths

    Rotary Club International (District 9125) is set to empower 600 youths in Ibadan and Abuja on vocational and socialisation skills expected to last for one week. 

    The District Governor, Sagab Ahmed, while soliciting for the cooperation of media said the programme tagged “Rotary Youth Leadership Academy” is a vocational/leadership/socialisation training. 

    He spoke when he paid a courtesy visit to the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Oyo State Council at Iyaganku GRA, Ibadan.

    Rotarian Ahmed added that the programme sponsored by District 9125 aims at training selected 200 plus participants who are members and non-members of the club in Ibadan.

    According to him, the training in Ibadan is scheduled to precede that of Abuja where about 300 or more participants are to be trained.

    He said the program also aims at gearing the interests of the non-members in Rotary activities and membership.

    While seeking the support of media, Ahmed said that the programme needs media attention as a way of showing the importance of developing the youths.

    According to him: “Very importantly, we want to develop socialization skills in them. They would be able to interact with other people in a very respectful and organized way in their processes of growth.”

    “It is in the process of interaction and one’s capacity of interacting with other people that actually develops one. Also, there is going to be several activity like physical training as well as structured classroom training where they would be trained and there would be interactions in their social activities.” 

    “At the end of the day, we hope they would be able to develop long lasting friendships just as that of alumni of a particular school. They would grow possibly being Rotarians and also being helpful to each other and at the same time being of service to their communities.”

    “The vocational skills to be learnt includes “tailoring, soap and cream manufacturing, shoe making and several others.”

    Asokoro Rotary Club to conduct free cataract surgeries in 2023/2024 calendar

    Adesuwa Agbontaen, the newly appointed President of the Rotary Club of Asokoro, Abuja, has announced the club’s intention to fund a series of cataract surgeries for underprivileged individuals and contribute to the efforts to combat maternal mortality in the coming year.

    Agbontaen who spoke at his investiture ceremony as the 23rd President of the club also said that Rotary also plans to carry out about 50 other projects in the next year.

    He disclosed that the club intends to raise about N27 million to execute all the projects saying that Rotary was all about service to humanity and giving back to society.

    He said: “We have in our project book, 50 projects to execute, that is our planned project but many times, we exceed that. We are going to hit the ground running. We have projects to execute and prominent among them is free cataract surgeries for residents of Abuja.

    “We are also having school projects, we are building classrooms for a couple of schools; we are doing a whole lot of projects, medical projects and all of that and we are starting immediately after this investiture.

    “Maternal and Child Health is one of those areas and it is one of the focus areas we are obligated to concentrate on among the rotary seven areas of focus.

    “One of the things that we want to do is to encourage breastfeeding among women, provide them with all the materials they need to go to the hospitals to give birth and pay their hospital bills,” he said.

    Outgoing President of the club, Ms. Ebele Israel-Ezezue said that in the last 12 months, the club awarded scholarships to about 50 pupils, and conducted free hepatitis screening for 104 persons among others.

    The Chairman of the investiture ceremony, Adelana Olamilekan admonished Nigerians and corporate organisations to cultivate the attitude of giving back to society.

    According to him, when one gives back to society, he or she is loading the cloud for more blessings to rain.

    He said: “So my message is for us who have the gift of giving to keep giving, give back to society; it is an investment that comes back, it is never foolishness, God sees.”

  • Rotary Club restates commitment to service

    Rotarian Vipul Agrawal has been inducted as the 4th President of Rotary Club of Lagos Island at a ceremony held at Lagoon Conference Centre, Lagos. Rotarian Agrawal took over the leadership of the club from  Rotarian Rajkumar Gulati.

    President Agrawal said he was humbled by the trust and responsibility reposed in him by the club members, adding that he was humbled and excited by the vast opportunities to serve for the communities. “We will strive to do our best to make a difference in life for the less privileged in the communities we live in,” he added.

    Agrawal is a leading building industry professional and a senior member of the Lafarge Nigeria management team. His wife, Rotarian Poonam, is also an active member of RCLI with a passion for conserving the environment and habitat.

    The event was attended by the District Governor of Rotary District 9110, Rotarian Jide Akeredolu, and other members of the district leadership team, business and community leaders, industrialists and members of RCLI.

    According to the outgone President of the club, “RCLI is one of the youngest Rotary Clubs in Nigeria, but with an impressive list of achievements.  Since its first year of inception, it has had the largest number of lady members in Africa. Its service projects have focused on five key areas of  Vision 2020, including free cataract eye surgeries for the needy in both Lagos and Kano in association with Geeta Ashram, Lekki.

    “We have had blood donation camps, almost two camps every month, to encourage the habit of blood donation and provide a much deficient medical resource that saves lives.  With 1,200 pints collected in 2018-19, the highest voluntary blood collection by any social service organisation in Nigeria at RCLI, we are helping to create a large pool of regular donors so that a good level of reserve can be kept in the Blood Bank. Frequent camps are helping to replenish fresh blood in the Blood Bank. This is the No. 1 Club for lood donation.

    “On schools rehabilitation, we have adopted two schools in Lagos Island in an under privileged area: Teslim Elias Model Primary and Union Baptist schools. We fully refurbished their toilet block and plan to continue with other schools. We have created community projects that provide food, beverages, clothing and footwear to the needy, indigent and particularly at Leprosy hospices. Polio eradication programme – donation of refrigerators for keeping polio vaccines safe and donation of footwear for aid workers. Sensitising the communities, volunteers, youngsters and students for eradication of Polio is bringing Nigeria close to getting declared Polio Free by WHO.

    “We have also created sanitation and hygiene outreach projects including health education and distribution of sanitary napkins for girls at schools and building toilets in schools, with vocational training and artificial limb replacement initiatives with leading partners.

    The district team and Rotary members wished the team well in their efforts to do more among the communities and among the needy in Lagos, and across Nigeria.

    The District Governor of Rotary district 9110 Rotarian JideAkeredolu, who witnessed the event, commended the smooth handling of baton from one President to another. He said “that is the beauty of power transfer in Rotary club,” however, that the work of the past president is not done yet . He cited the case of past presidents in other clubs not supporting their new president. “But in Rotary, there is nothing like that. We have a triangular leadership whereby the past president Rotarian Rajkumar Gulati, the new President Rotarian Vipul Agrawal and the next President for year 2020-21 Mr. Sanjay Srivastava, will have to work together.”

    He urged the new President that he should think outside the box as he takes over because in a year from now, he would have to come out to reel out the projects that he would have accomplished. He mentioned some of the core prejocts of the District, which he hopes that the club lend to, project which bother on cervical cancer and other health challenges.

    The new president thanked  the club members for their support. He said that the focus of the club remains to enhance humanity.

    The night was not all about speeches alone as there was the cutting of the cake, which came with much fun and laughter, as well as the introduction of new members, and raffle draws. There was also the caring for the environment and fashion  show, with members and children wearing stuffs that have been recycled on the runway!

  • Rotary offers free medical services to Iju-Ishaga residents

    Rotary Club of Omole Golden in District 9110, at the weekend, offered free medical services to residents of Iju-Ishaga and its environs in Lagos State.

    Former President Mrs. Ibironke Alaba, and President Mr. Babajimi Ajibola, with members conducted free hepatitis tests, administered injections, and gave out  drugs.

    Ajibola, addressed as ‘the united president’, noted that the exercise was tagged Hepatitis Zero World Eradication Project, saying it was meant to educate people on the causes of hepatitis, its cure and prevention.

    He said: “The aim …is to let people know about finding those with Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and saving lives. We want to eradicate the disease.

    “Many people are not aware of hepatitis. This disease is as deadly as HIV/AIDS. We want to create awareness … We are determined to ensure a healthy society.”

    Ajibola said during his tenure, the club would touch people’s lives in education, health and others.

    He said it would continue to provide humanitarian services to address peace and conflict resolution, as well as disease prevention.

    He also noted that the club would ensure access to potable water and sanitation.

    Beneficiaries of the free health services hailed the Rotary Club of Omole Golden for its kind gesture.

    They said it showed it was determined “to make our society a safe place to live.”

    The exercise was held at Balogun market, Iju-Ishaga.

  • Rotary Club seeks partnership with govt, society

    The immediate past Governor of Rotary International District 9110 Nigeria, Rotarian Kola Sodipo, has solicited for a strong collaboration among Rotary Club, the society and the government towards providing amenities that will make life worth living for members of the society. This, he said, will alleviate the suffering of the masses. He also stated that government alone cannot provide all that the people need.

    Joining Sodipo in the plea were the Rotary District Governor-elect, Rotarian Bola Oyebade, and the newly Chartered President, Rotary Club of Eko Atlantic, PHF Rotarian Dr. Sunit Deb Roy.

    They respectively urged Nigerians to join Rotary Club International where they would deploy their God-given talents, time, treasures and resources to contribute to the well-being of humankind.

    They spoke at the formal Chartering of the Rotary Club of Eko Atlantic, mentored by the immediate Past President, Rotary Club of Lagos Island, PHF Rotarian Sanjeev Tandon at the Spice Route Restaurant, Adeola Odeku Street, Victoria Island, Lagos.

    Eminent Rotarians such as former District Governor, Rotarian Dr. Kamoru Omotosho and his wife, Rotarian Dr. Susan Omotosho, attended the event.

    In his goodwill message at the ceremony, Rotarian Omotosho expressed Nigerians’ gratitude to the entire Indian Community in Nigeria for their commitment to improving Nigeria’s economy. He noted that their commitment to service to humankind should be emulated by other nationals.

    While appreciating the chartering of the new Club, the Rotary Club of Eko Atlantic, District 9110 Nigeria, Rotarian Omotosho also said the gesture was a move towards expansion of the club at the global level.

    Rotarian Sodipo, accompanied by his wife, Inner Wheeler, Nike Sodipo, described the Charter President of the Club, PHF Rotarian Dr. Sunit Deb Roy as Godsend as he would be an instrument to assist others to realize their full potential in life.

    He, therefore, urged those in authority to work hard towards enhancing the lives of members of the society.

    He, therefore, urged all Nigerians to be great role models for others, especially the younger generations to enable them to contribute to national growth and development.

    In his address at the event, a former President, Rotary Club of Lagos Island, District 9110, Rotary International, PHF Rotarian Sanjeev Tandon expressed his gratitude to God and to other distinguished guests and the newly enrolled members over their commitment to enhance the well-being of others, even as he said he was impressed by the members resolve to exalt the ideals of the organisation for which the Club firmly believes in which is to better the lives of others.

    In his acceptance speech, the Charter President, PHF Rotarian Dr. Sunit Deb Roy expressed his club’s gratitude to God and to all distinguished guests present at the event.

    He pleaded to the members to continue in the financial contributions and moral support to the new President of the club to enable him to succeed.

    He urged members of the public to join the Rotary International, especially with the inauguration and the Chartering of the new Club, the Rotary Club of Eko Atlantic.

    Highlights of the event were the installation, enrollment and decoration of the respective Clubs’ Board of Directors with the Club’s insignia and crests on the allocation of their respective portfolios and responsibilities in the discharge of their duties to the club, the society and the country in general.

  • Director hails Rotary for supporting health care

    The Medical Director of General Hospital, Ifako-Ijaiye, Dr. Olushola Amure, has hailed the Rotary Club of Omole-Golden for its passion for health care.

    He said the club had contributed a lot to the development of health care, adding that it proved this by laying the foundation of the hospital’s neo-natal building.

    Amure, who spoke yesterday when the Rotary Club visited the hospital, also praised it for donating phototherapy machines and incubators to the neo-natal ward.

    He said: “The General Hospital, Ifako-Ijaiye was recently given the award of the best hospital in neo-natal care in Lagos State because of the support by Rotary Club of Omole-Golden.

    “Another history is being made today with the foundation laying of the neo-natal building by the club.

    “On behalf of Health Commissioner Dr. Jide Idris, I thank the club members for their kind gesture. The government should also be commended for providing more health care facilities. Other organisations should emulate Rotary Club of Omole-Golden.”

    The President, Mrs. Ibironke Alaba, said the club has donated over 10 incubators and phototherapy machines to the hospital.

    She said the hospital needed a new neo-natal clinic because there was no space in the neo-natal ward to accommodate more incubators and phototherapy machines.

    Alaba said the club would donate another incubator to the hospital.

    District Governor Rotary International District 9110 Nigeria Kola Sodipo urged the hospital workers to join Rotary Club “so that we can together put smiles on people’s faces.”
