  • Association to Akeredolu: Review OSOPADEC activities

The Ilaje Ese-Ondo Progressive Association has called for the review of the activities of Ondo State Oil Producing Area Development Commission ( OSOPADEC ).

The association conveyed its message to Ondo state Governor, Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu, in a statement jointly signed by its Secretary General, Samuel Ebiesuwa, Mobilization Officer/Treasurer, Malumi Oluwatosin and Public Relations Officer, Owowa Tosin.

The statement called for investigation into the Primary Health Centres which was put in place by the commission for N1 billion, while calling on the state government to hold the contractors accountable for the funds.

It also urged the governor to look into the rural electrification project in Idi-Ogba that was contracted out for N243 million.

It called for the probe of last and present leaders of the commission, stressing that the leadership of the commission be held accountable for their misdeeds during their tenure.

The statement said employment into the commission had always been done in the past on the basis of nepotism and favouritism by its leadership.

The statement reads: “We have noted since the inception of OSOPADEC in 2001, that employment has only been executed by the Olusegun Agagu administration in a manner that could be termed a semi – compliance to the normal procedure.

“Thereafter, employment has been likened to ‘man knows man’ with a population of non-indigene of the mandate area as beneficiaries.

“We therefore demand in respect of the above as follows: That our youth should be massively employed by the commission.

“As law abiding citizens and the present leaders of the region and not future, we demand that the above demands be quickly looked into by the relevant authorities within the next two weeks failure of which, we shall implore the necessary machineries to put the government on its toes.

“We shall not hesitate to close down the activities of governance in the state by embarking on hunger strike protest as long as our demands are meant.”

  • Elders should reconcile Akeredolu and Boroffice – Adeyeye

Former All Progressives Congress governorship aspirant, Olaoluwa Adeyeye, told Ibrahim Apekhade Yusuf that there is urgent need to reconcile Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State and Senator Robert Ajayi Boroffice. Excerpts.

Although Governor Rotimi Akeredolu-led administration in Ondo State rode to power in a blaze of glory, Olaoluwa Adeyeye, one of the aspirants in the election under All Progressives Congress (APC), is of the view that one year down the line many electorates are having a raw deal of some sort.

Speaking in an interview with The Nation, Adeyeye said “Governor Akeredolu has done quite a number of remarkable things, particularly the determined manner in which he sought to clear the salary arrears left by his predecessor who chose to build a N14 billion ‘event centre’ rather than pay salaries. This administration has also initiated a number of development initiatives and from the strategic development plans they put in place, should be on track to deliver. However, the people of Ondo State at large are yet to come out of the coma inflicted by poverty of these past years.”

Adeyeye however added that many people that see a Messiah in Akeredolu are currently worried because of what he described as “some anti-people policies of the government in recent times. Rather than alleviate their poverty, the signals coming out of this administration is aggressive taxation, masked as increased school fees, suggestions of Parents Teachers’ Association fees across primary schools, unaffordable university fees and talks about introducing a Lagos style ‘Land Use Charge.”

Much as he argues that it is legitimate for the state government to increase the internally generated revenue, he also holds the view that “such should not be at the expense of the already impoverished masses.

“I believe government can take a different approach to the matter and not to squeeze an already shrunken people. The situation is to an extent that pregnant women who deliver their babies free under the previous administration that we rejected are now being charged almost N30, 000. From zero to almost N30, 000 is not acceptable. Whilst the government has signed various memorandum of understanding (MoU) towards the delivery of projects across various sectors, those MoUs are yet to become substantive agreements that are being executed at much needed speed so that jobs can be created and economic activities in the state can increase. It is only when this is done that the state can begin to see increased IGR,” he said.

Ideally, he would rather the state government takes a cue from its counterparts elsewhere. As he puts it: “Ogun State is worthy of emulation in many respects. Let me say this very expressly; the conversion rate of MoU’s into reality in this country is very low and I’m not just talking about Ondo State, you can check other states, you can check the federal government and I can tell you categorically as a legal practitioner that the practice in that space is that about 80 percent of MoUs signed by the government never see the light of day. An MoU is not a contract, it is not binding, it’s just an understanding that the parties will enter into a substantial relationship; but if the funds are not available and the will to see it to manifestation is not there, the MoU will just end up as paper or a file in a cabinet that will ultimately be shredded and forgotten about. I’m hoping that will not be our experience in Ondo State; I am hoping that MoUs will translate into reality here, that funding will be secured for strategic projects that would improve the quality of life lived by people in Ondo State.”

On plans by the state government to increase tuition fees in the state-owned institutions, he said education should not be the place where government looks to grow its revenue.

The government, he insists, “has a duty to educate the next generation and I think that should always be the starting point of any discussion.

On the recently promulgated Land Use Charge and other tax policies which is drawing a lot of flakes from concerned members of the state, he said the timing was wrong.

“I’m aware that government needs money to run; I’m aware of the role that taxes pay in helping societies to develop but a tax policy that is not married to the current economic realities of its audience will fail, so I would strongly suggest that the Ondo State Government introduce this new tax drive with great care, feel the pulse of the people.

On allegation that his 2016 governorship bid in Ondo State was bankrolled by the Senator representing the northern senatorial district of the state in National Assembly, Robert Ajayi Borofice, who also ran for the coveted seat, he offered some explanations.

Professor Ajayi Borofice, he said, “remains a father figure I met in the run-up to the primary election within our party and he was as always very measured and well-presented on his approach to issues. Fast-forward to the primary election; we realised that we did not have sufficient political capital to execute the primaries successfully, hence the need to align with a more experienced candidate that had a broad political structure from whom we could learn a thing or two and as you are aware that was my first entrance into competitive politics and there is a very huge learning curve in this process, hence the alignment with Prof. Borofice; that was what it was and the alignment ended with the APC primaries. I’ve heard people say that Prof. Borofice may be sponsored the campaign, may be Prof. gave me money to step down and all of that, I’m a politician that prides myself in transparency and sincerity and I’m telling you on my integrity that I did not receive a dime from Prof. Boroffice, there was no inducement whatsoever either directly or indirectly. I respect him as a leader in the state just as I respect Governor Akeredolu but I’m largely unhappy about the wrangling between himself and the governor. I’m hoping they can put differences aside and be sincere and be cooperative about the future of Ondo State. There is life beyond politics and elections. I’m pleading with elders in the state to bring them together and let there be peace in the APC in Ondo State so that we can move together because united we stand and divided we are most certainly going to fall.”

    Lawmaker extols Akeredolu’s virtues

The lawmaker representing Ondo South Senatorial District of Ondo State in the 8th Senate, Senator Yele Omogunwa, has eulogised the virtues of Ondo State governor, Mr Rotimi Akeredolu.

The lawmaker described the past one year that the governor has been in charge of the state as impacful and beneficial.

His words: “Governor Rotimi Akeredolu is doing his best and he is working to leave a legacy.  This is evident in his attempt to ensure youthempowerment through the bitumen factory work in my district of Ondo State. It is a lifelong investment for the entire people.  The contract for the road leading directly from Ayetoro (in the riverine area of Ondo State) to Lagos has been signed and we all know the advantages that  this direct link to Lagos State would have once the road is done. Some of the projects that he met before he came into office are still on going like Oba Ile Airport Road.”

Aknowledging the governor as the leader of the p-arty in the state, he  said: “  Governor Rotimi Akeredolu is the leader of APC in Ondo State.

I came to work for the governor and that is who I follow.”

Ondo Govt. distributes 362 ICT tablets

Ondo State Government on Tuesday began the distribution of 362 data management tools known as clinipak tablets to health workers to enhance primary healthcare delivery across 18 local government areas of the state.

The distribution was inaugurated by Gov. Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State, who was represented by Dr Wahab Adegbenro, the state Commissioner for Health in Akure on Tuesday.

He said that the state government decided to embark on the project to enhance effective management of health information data, which was key to the delivery of qualitative healthcare.

According to him, health workers had earlier been trained on the use of the ICT tools.

He added that the state procured the tablets while the technical partner, Instar Global Health Solution, designed and installed the Clinipak application.

The governor said that the tools had been tested and proven to be the ideal solution for data management.

Akeredolu commended the state health workers for working tirelessly to put the state at the forefront in healthcare delivery.

He urged them to hit the ground running as the tablets were meant to improve both their efficiency and effectiveness.

In his remark, the Senior Special Assistant to the governor on ICT, Mr Olumbe Akinkugbe, applauded the state Primary Healthcare Development Board for the initiative, which he said would enhance healthcare delivery.

Akinkugbe expressed delight that the state was moving in the right direction using modern ICT tools in the management of health information data.

Similarly, Mr Abiola Oshunniyi, Director, Business Development International, said that with the Clinipak application, health facilities in the state would move from just collecting and reporting patients data to leveraging on mobile solutions for improved decision from facility level to the policy making level.

Oshunniyi added that the application was currently being used in some states in Nigeria, but that of Ondo State was the largest deployment.

  • Tutition fee hike: AAUA students plead with authority

    • Management: no tuition hike yet

The Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA) Student Union government has appealed against Ondo State’s purported plan to increase tuition fee.

This was contained in a release by the Union President, Comrade Ijanusi Olawale (aka ‘Optimum’), through his Chief Press Secretary (CPS), Dada Bamidele.

The State Governor, Rotimi  Akeredolu, had said  during the last convocation that tuition fee at the university would be reviewed upward. This has elicited various reactions from the students.

Ijanusi said though there was no circular on the fee hike,  the Governor should consider that the low tuition fees at the university had attracted many students, who had studied and graduated from the school.

He warned that an upward review may end the dreams of many students if implemented, as some of them still find it difficult to pay the current fees due to the recession.

“The hopes and dreams of the over 15,000 students on campus may eventually come to an end as it is becoming more intense that our tuition fee will be increased.

“Many of these students are struggling alongside their parents to pay even the current fee, as we all understand that the state of the Nigerian economy has really depleted the cost of running a functional and efficient government.

“As much as increment in tuition fee will improve the sustainability of the university and enable the institution to continue its good projects in developing into a 21st Century university properly called, note that any increment will pose great hardship to the students and their parents,” he said.

While calling on the school management to open the portal for students to pay their fees for the new session, the Union President appealed to Gov Akeredolu “to show his fatherly love to the over 15,000 students and maintain the benchmark payment as parents cannot afford any increment in this turbulent time in which salaries haven’t been increased.”

On its part, the university management has described as fake a list of reviewed fees circulating on the social media.

In a statement through its Head of Information and Protocol Unit, Mr. Sola Imoru, said the circulating piece did not emanate from the institution.

Part of the statement reads: “The patently false piece purports to list school and other miscellaneous fees to be paid by new and returning students of Adekunle Ajasin University.

“The piece could neither have emanated from nor even concern our institution as several courses not offered by Adekunle Ajasin University such as Nursing, Physiology, Medicine, Laboratory Science, and Engineering are listed in the fake and fraudulent piece.”

He revealed that the management has not taken any decision on the review of tuition fee.

The statement further reads: “Management wishes to emphatically state that no decision has been taken on the review of the fees payable by students.

“The University has its own official channels of giving out information to its stakeholders and the general public, including the University website. Such information would be properly signed by a designated officer of the institution.

“Parents and students are implored to disregard this misleading information as it was evidently concocted by mischief makers to discredit the University and cause disaffection between it and its stakeholders.”

  • Rotimi Akeredolu’s son set to wed

Rotimi Akeredolu’s son set to wed

Ondo State governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, must be a very happy man at the moment. Not only did the just concluded year end on an excellent note for him with his victory at the polls and remarkable time at the helm of affairs in the Sunshine State, the new year has begun on a similarly positive note as his first son gets ready to tie the nuptial knot at a high-octane event in Lagos.

Come January 6, Landmark Events Centre, Oniru, Lagos, will become the temporary jaunt of men and women in the corridors of power as well as gentlemen and ladies of high net worth as Babajide Ayotola Akeredolu says ‘I do’ to his long-time heartthrob, Mary Oghenetega.

The two lovebirds met and hit it off a long time back, but one thing or the other always came up to scupper their plans for marital union; so much so that it was beginning to look not just like marriage delayed but marriage denied.

But all is now set for their “happily ever after” story in a few days’ time.

  • Ondo govt. committed to educational development – Commissioner

Ondo govt. committed to educational development – Commissioner

The Ondo State Government says it is working hard to restore the educational sector to its lost glory in all the 18 local government areas of the state.

The Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr Yemi Olowolabi disclosed this on Tuesday in Akure when he received delegation from his former school Ilemobola Comprehensive High School, Idanre.

Olowolabi said that government was set to embark on massive construction and renovation of public schools in all the 18 local government areas of the state.

The commissioner, who repeated the commitment of the Gov. Rotimi Akeredolu led administration to turn the education sector around, noted that public schools in the state were in urgent need of government’s interventions.

Olowolabi noted that construction, rehabilitation of structures and provision of well-equipped modern libraries as well as functional laboratories would be the key objective of the restoration programme.

The commissioner also allayed the fear of parents by emphasising the fact that education remained free in the state.

“The state government is committed to providing functional and affordable education both at the basic and secondary levels in the state.”

He said that the free education system established by late Chief Obafemi Awolowo would be consolidated in the state.

Owolabi, however, called on stakeholders in the education system to support the state government in rebuilding the educational sector.

The Chairman, Parents Teachers Association ( PTA ) of the school, Mr Akinduni Akindeko, congratulated the commissioner on his appointment and prayed for God’s guidance in the discharge of his duties.

Akindeko also solicited for the commissioner’s assistance in providing a functional science laboratory, which he described as a major challenge confronting the school at the moment.

The school’s Vice-Principal, Mr Samuel Akinsuroju pleaded with the commissioner to remember the school when the government commences the renovation and equipment of schools across the state.
