  • Don’t allow Amaechi to deceive you, Secondus urges Southeast

National Chairman of People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Uche Secondus on Friday accused Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi of trying to deceive people of the south east zone with his call on them to vote President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019 and be rewarded with Presidency in 2023.

Amaechi had at a convocation lecture of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka on Wednesday urged Ndigbo to join main stream politics by supporting the APC which he claimed remembered the south east more than the PDP that ruled the country for 16 years.

But Secondus, while speaking in Afikpo town in Ebonyi state at a rally organised to honour Governor David Umahi, urged the people of the South East not to allow Mr Amechi to deceive them.

He also accused the ruling APC of marginalizing Ndigbo and minority groups in the country.

“We will not be deceived; nobody can pull the wood on our eyes any more. The best party for Ndigbo is PDP and that is where the future is. No one will deceive us. A minister went to University at Awka the other day talking about APC and the chances of Ndigbo, that’s another deceit and he cannot succeed.  We have been meted here with
    deceit and lies and nepotism”.

“When we talk about how they have instituted nepotism, they will say it is a hate speech. Our people have been marginalized, our party was founded on the ground of National unity and that’s why nobody can lay claim on this party.

“When you cannot include Ndigbo and the minority in your government and you expect such people to be happy. PDP will restore the dignity of Ndigbo and the minority in the country. PDP was in government for 16 years and it was all inclusive government. Even the opposition were appointed “, he said.

He commended Governor Umahi for his development strides and unity of the party in the state.

The National Chairman also promised that their will be no imposition of candidate by anybody in the party in next year’s election.

In his remarks, Umahi said despite attempts to destabilize the PDP by the opposition, the party will remain strong and united.

He expressed dismay that former Governor of the state, Chief Martin Elechi who he described as his grandfather was teaming up with the Minister of Science and Technology to wrestle power from him in 2019.

“I came by the mighty hands of God. You know the irony of life? In 2007 when Dr. Onu who is the Minister of Science and Technology was contesting against the same Elechi, I was supporting Elechi and all my properties in the village; my country home, my filing station, my hotels were all burnt down. Dr. Onu’s supporters burnt them down because I was supporting Elechi. Today, two of them have teamed up against God’s own anointed,” he said.

  • Amaechi urges states to key into FG’s transport development policies

The Minister of Transportation, Mr Rotimi Amaechi, has called on states to key into the programmes and policies of the Federal Government in developing the nation’s transportation sector.

Amaechi made the call at the ongoing meeting of Nigerian Transportation Commissioners Forum on Friday in Abuja.

The Minister, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Alhaji Sabiu Zakari, said that the Forum would offer the transport sector the much required inter-governmental partnership for formulating and executing pro-people policies, programmes and projects.

He added that the ministry had developed and would continue to develop several projects and programmes that would require collaboration with the States in order to ensure effective implementation.

Amaechi listed some of the programmes to include development of Road Transport Operators Manual, Road Crime Control System (RCCS), Introduction of Truck Transit Parks (TTPs) and Development of Urban Mass Transit Transportation.

“There is also the introduction of Green Transportation and Amphibious vehicles.

“I am hopeful that this will remain a platform for interaction, for generation, integration and harmonization of policies, programmes, and initiatives geared towards moving transportation forward.

“I want to state that your goals can only be achieved if you sustain the forum as a team.

“As you well know, the continuity of this platform would largely depend on the level of cooperation and sacrifice you are willing to make for its success,” he said.

The minister said that the provision of a seamless transportation system for Nigerians was long overdue, adding that the forum would help to achieve consensus in key areas towards the development of the road transport subsector.

He said that the road sector was a constitutional responsibility of states, adding that the forum was a veritable institution for peer-review as well as platform for sharing aspirations for the transport sector.

“For us in the Ministry, it offers a good avenue for exchanging the mandate mission, vision, and focus of the Federal Government in the ongoing reforms in the rail, maritime, Aviation, Mass Transit and Road operations Administration sub-sector of Transportation,” he said.

The Chairman Senate Committee on Land Transport, Sen. Gbenga Ashafa, commended the State Commissioners for Transport for their initiative to form a formidable team to transform the nation’s transport sector.

Ashafa, who was represented by Sen. Victor Umeh, Anambra Central, disclosed that the senate had recently passed the National Transport Commission Bill in line with the senate’s resolve to transform the sector.

He assured that the senate would always be available to offer parliamentary support to the forum in terms of bills and proposals.

Mr Orman Esin, Chairman of the forum and Commissioner for Transport and Petroleum Resources, Akwa Ibom State, said the forum was set up in response to the recommendations of the National Council on Transportation in 2017.

Esim said the maiden meeting was meant to brainstorm on issues affecting the transport sector and formally set the forum on strong footing.

He said the forum was also to ensure that there was uniformity in service delivery by state governments on the roads such as the issue of multiple charges and taxes even within a state.

FG saves N4.5 trillion from high profile cases

The Federal Government on Wednesday disclosed that it has saved over N4.5 trillion from high profile cases prosecuted by the Ministry of Justice between 2015 and 2017.

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami briefed State House correspondents at the end of about seven hours Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting chaired by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He was with the Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, Minister of Science and Technology, Ogbonnaya Onu and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mohammed Bello.

According to Malami, his Ministry presented its score card to Council in the last two and a half years.

He said “In respect of Federal Ministry of Justice what was presented to the Council today is the score card from 2015 to 2017

“We presented a score card as to cases both civil, criminal that were prosecuted by the Federal Ministry of Justice and their implications as to savings that were done for the government commencing from 2015 to the present time.

“Fundamentally arising from the cases that were conducted by the Federal ministry of Justice, the Ministry has succeeded in saving the government around N4.5 trillion relating to the claims that were presented in respect of these cases which were indeed conducted and concluded.” he

Continuing, the Minister said “The Federal Government has put in place a committee saddled with the responsibilities of coming up with policies and strategies that will ease off congestion of prisons.

“Over 70 percent of the inmates are awaiting trials there are sizeable number that couldn’t afford to pay limited fine that have been imposed by them arriving from their convictions.

“There are those awaiting trials that have never seen the court room for over five years and above and indeed there are multiple legislation that are before the national assembly that are intended to support the decongestion of prison formation process.” he said

He said that another area the Ministry presented its score card was the ongoing prosecution of Boko Haram cases.

On Boko Haram suspected terrorists ongoing trial, he said that the total number of convictions so far is 255 and those discharged is 737.

He said “We presented a position as to the number of cases that were prosecuted, number of convictions that were procured and the number of discharges that were made relating to the cases and then made a presentation as to the road maps for the continuation of the process.

“There were other presentations that were made particularly as it relates to plea bargain. There are a lot of pending criminal cases in respect of the accused persons standing trials, who made offers for plea bargain.

“Again there are high profile cases that we made our score card and gave an insight as to their respective positions.

“A presentation was made relating to national prosecution team as it relates to the cases they are expected to prosecute.” he said

The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi also disclosed that FEC has approved the construction of the  Ibadan – Kaduna rail lines at the cost of $6.7 billion.

The project, he said, is expected to be completed in three years.

According to him, the contract for the Kaduna to Kano aspect of the rail line was awarded last year.

The Minister of Science and Technology, Ogbonnaya Onu, also briefed on the progress made based on the recently approved executive order, the national strategy for competitiveness and the entire science and technology innovation road map.

As part of the score card of the Ministry in the past two and half years, he presented new biscuits being produced in conjunction with Nasco Food.

He said “High nutrient density products developed and proposed for inclusion in the current Nigerian School Feeding program will provide at least a third of the desired major macro and micro nutrients requirement stipulated by the World Health organization, Food and Nutrition Board.

“Additionally, the products will be produced by NASCO Foods Limited, Jos that have state-of-the-art processing equipment with vast experience in Food processing, Food Safety and quality for production and supply chain nationwide.

“The developed nutritious products have been tested using Nasco Food processing facilities in Jos and have been found to be technically and economically viable.

“The pupils in the schools in Jos and Lagos where the sensory evaluation and consumer acceptability studies were done showed strong likeness for the products and are ready to consume the products if including in the school feeding program.” he said

On his part, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, said that the major projects which were rolled out by his ministry, including the citizens diplomacy program, desk to desk review initiatives and the economic diplomacy innovation, are recording successes.

He also gave score card of his Ministry in the past two and half years to the Council.

He listed the special interventions by the Buhari’s administration for the ministry, foreign missions and embassies to include N16.3 billion, N933 million, N7 billion, $32 million and $28 million.

According to him, all the interventions were made as the President decided that he would not entertain sending Nigerians abroad without the necessary funding.

He said “Special intervention fund to rescue many embassies in several countries of the world. First was in 2016 when the Naira was fluctuating terribly and of course the dollars to our embassies were too low to sustain them.

“We received initially N16.3 billion, and was successfully distributed to all embassies. The second one was N933 million for renovations and other debts released in October, 2017.

“The third was $32 million that were released for critically distressed 65 missions that were in serious debts and crisis. This was approved in November 2017 and we are in the process of distributing to the embassies around the world another one, $28 million and is the process of also being distributed and finally for ministry headquarters, the sum of N7 billion was made.” he said

He added “A lot of the debts and the crisis in our embassies and missions around the world have been building over the last 10 years and Mr. President decided that he will no longer accept the situation where we are sending Nigerians out to represent this country and not given them the resources to be able to carry out their tasks. Hence he made provisions and directed that these funds should be released to them.

“So the situation is still not perfect but this has come in very handily and of course in the interest of transparency we wanted to show how these funds had been disbursed.” he stated

The Minister of FCT disclosed that FEC approved N1.9 billion for road reconstruction of Clinton Drive and N273 million for water treatment chemicals.

  • 100 new stars from the Niger Delta

100 new stars from the Niger Delta

Aztech Arcum Event Centre on Ken Saro-Wiwa Road, Port Harcourt in Rivers State hosted eminent personalities on February 3. That day 100 new stars were unleashed on the Niger Delta. The event was the 6th graduation of 100 beneficiaries of the Empowerment Support Initiative (ESI)/Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) Entrepreneurial and Skills’ Acquisition.

The Non-Governmental Organisation, NGO (ESI), which was started on October 16, 2008, has as President/Founder, Dame Judith Amaechi, who is the wife of the Transportation Minister, Rotimi Amaechi, a former governor of Rivers state.

The 100 beneficiaries, who had colourful procession into the venue in coveralls and protective helmets, later changed into academic gowns, to the admiration of their parents, guardians, other family members, friends and well-wishers, with the legendary and award-winning gospel artiste, Frank Edwards, and others entertaining the guests.

The intensive training for four weeks by mostly foreigners, made the beneficiaries to become specialists in screeding, carpentry, plumbing, Plaster Of Paris (POP) ceiling installation, floor tiling, electrical wiring and decoration.

During the graduation, each of the beneficiaries received N150,000 as business investment capital support and starter pack, to start them off in the right direction, as well as presenting all of them with certificates of participation.

Chairman of the Central Planning Committee (CPC) of the graduation, Dame Maureen Tamuno, in her welcome address, insisted that the NGO had done well in the last ten years.

Tamuno stressed that the founder of ESI (Dame Judith) had positively been impacting the lives of many women, youths and children in the Niger Delta and beyond.

The Chairman, Board of Trustees of ESI, Dr. Dakuku Peterside, who is also the Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), in his address, stated that giving youths hand-outs would not be sustainable, while pointing out that giving the young ones qualitative education and skills would ensure a brighter future.

Peterside said: “We at ESI are arming our people with skills that are sustainable and that will make them to employ more persons, while some politicians are arming the youths with guns and giving them hand-outs, which should be discouraged.”

Chairman of the ESI’s board of trustees also assured that the NGO would continue to make Niger Deltans and other Nigerians proud.

The guest speaker, Sanjeev Ohri, who is the Chief Officer, Business Development, Dudley Worldwide, United Kingdom, stated that his institution/organisation was proud of the partnership with ESI, to empower the youths.

Another guest speaker, Kunle Awobodu, who is the First Vice President of the Nigeria Institute of Building, noted that efforts must always be made to address the skills’ gap in Nigeria, through empowerment of the youths.

Awobodu pointed out that there is future in Nigeria, in terms of skills’ acquisition, while lauding ESI for its activities and efforts.

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Dumo Lulu-Briggs, stated that equipping the youths, women and children to survive in the 21st century had been the passion of Amaechi’s wife, who was described as a prayerful and supportive woman.

Lulu-Briggs maintained that Dame Judith, as Rivers First Lady, was a delight, while referring to the founder of ESI as an amazing woman, who should always be celebrated worldwide.

The representative of Rivers East Senatorial District, Senator Andrew Uchendu, stated that Dame Judith had done well with her NGO, stressing that the energies of the youths must be harnessed for productive purposes, with a solid foundation laid for the young ones, which he said ESI was addressing.

Minister of Niger Delta Affairs Pastor Usani Usani noted that ESI had got the best in global standard, while the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, admonished the beneficiaries, drawn from the nine states of the Niger Delta, to effectively utilise the opportunities.

The graduation, which had as theme: “Home Finishing Skills, a Pathway to Empowerment and Sustainable Livelihood.” was also attended by the Deputy National Secretary of the APC, Chief Victor Giadom; a former Secretary to the Rivers State Government (SSG), Dame Aleruchi Cookey-Gam; the Chief Medical Director of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH), Prof.Henry Ugboma; and a former member of the House of Representatives, Dr. Dawari George; among others.

The founder of ESI, in her address, solicited the support of all stakeholders, especially with ESI engaging mostly foreign trainers, stressing that sustainability was key, if the back of the scourge of endemic poverty must be broken.

Former Rivers First Lady said: “The training was kicked off on January 10, 2018. ESI is proud to collaborate with Her Excellency, Hajia Aisha Buhari’s Future Assured Initiative, which is very actively advocating the health and well-being of women, children and other vulnerable groups, through community mobilisation and health promotion.

“For the modest successes we have jointly achieved at ESI, more of which we will, hopefully, attain in the future, I humbly give thanks and all the glory to God Almighty, who has made everything possible.

“For over a decade, ESI has aggressively engaged in many children, women and youth educational and vocational activities, including capacity building, both on the national and international stages.

“The mission of ESI is to tackle endemic poverty head on, develop a skill force that enables our citizens to be employable and self-employed, thereby reversing youth unemployment, eliminate social vices and temper restiveness in our region (Niger Delta) and country by empowering and securing opportunities for the sustainable of livelihood of our youths and women.”

Mrs Amaechi also revealed that ESI’s flagship was the entrepreneurial development and skills’ acquisition programme, which she said was conceived at a time when the skills gap in the Niger Delta was a daunting challenge, but recognised that the region’s potential for sustainable inter-personal growth was severely stunted.

Dame Judith noted that since 2008, when ESI started, it had provided various training programmes in vocational skills and entrepreneurial development, including capacity building to over 3,000 beneficiaries in Nigeria.

The president of ESI disclosed that the NGO was making efforts to evolve a culture of self-employability in Nigeria, thereby focusing on entrepreneurial, vocational and leadership value enhancement, described as a key to finally and completely unlock the potential and myriad of possibilities open to the people, in a pragmatically achievable and sustainable manner.

The Managing Director of NDDC, Mr. Nsima Ekere, described the graduation as a great milestone to transform the Niger Delta, stressing that NDDC was re-writing the history of the Niger Delta through massive infrastructural development and empowerment of the people.

He noted that the partnership between NDDC and ESI showed what could be achieved, while working together, with the energies of the youths to be directed to productive ventures.

Ekere disclosed that between 2003 and 2017, NDDC trained and built the capacity of 22,612 youths and women of the Niger Delta in vocational skills, while revealing that training of 5,000 more youths of the region, rich in crude oil and gas, was being processed and would commence as soon as the commission’s budget was approved.

NDDC’s managing director said: “Nine thousand applicants showed interest in the ESI/NDDC Entrepreneurial and Skills’ Acquisition programme, but only 100 were selected to participate,” adding that the mandate of the Federal Government’s interventionist agency went beyond physical infrastructure.

Ekere also lauded President Buhari for his commitment and attention to Niger Delta matters, putting Nigeria on the path of sustainable development, while making the Niger Delta and other parts of Nigeria better places for all.

Minister of Information and Culture Alhaji Lai Mohammed stated that Nigerians are extremely resourceful and creative, stressing that all citizens have roles to play, in order to ensure a better Nigeria.

Mohammed urged the ESI’s graduands to take advantage of the life-changing opportunities, not only to ensure better life for themselves and their families, but to endeavour to employ others.

He noted that the ESI was complementing the efforts of the government to empower Nigerians, particularly the youths, women and children.

The information minister said: “Jobs are not created only when you advertise, neither are jobs created when it is white collar jobs. Before this government came in, the nation had 5 million of rice growers. Today, we have 12.2 million rice growers.

“So, that is an extra of more than 7 million jobs in the agric sector alone. This is not fiction, but facts and this was corroborated by the chairman of the Rice Growers Association a few days ago. Not only government creates jobs. Every individual and NGO should help to create new jobs.

“200,000 jobs have been created directly by the N-Power programme. Another 12,000 jobs will be created in the second phase and the Government Inter-Temporary and Empowerment Programme has created another 500,000 direct and indirect jobs.

“Through the school feeding programme; government has created 61,000 new jobs, just for schools. So, job creation is not just the job of government alone. We are to provide the enabling environment through programmes and activities.”

The information minister also stated that the ESI was a well-thought-out and beautiful initiative, having tallied with what government had started doing.

The wife of President Muhammadu Buhari, Hajia Aisha, disclosed that she was proud of the founder of ESI, in view of her laudable works through the NGO.

The President’s wife, who was represented by the wife of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mrs. Gimbiya Yakubu-Dogara, urged Nigerian youths, especially those of the Niger Delta, to remain focused and to continually contribute to societal development.

Dogara’s wife said: “The wife of the President is proud of you (Dame Judith) for all the laudable works you are doing. I want to thank the Minister of Transportation (Amaechi) for giving Dame Judith the opportunity to realise her dream. Madam, you had a dream and you pursued it, you followed it and it has come to fruition. All Nigerian women are proud of you.

“To the celebrants (graduands), you have been given an opportunity to be what you are. You had a vision and this woman (Dame Judith) has given you everything she can give you. You have to talk to yourselves, encourage yourselves, push forward and keep moving, you will be what you desire to be. The journey of a thousand miles begins with a step. This is the right step to achieving your goal.

“The challenge is that people will castigate you, close your ears and continue to move, you will achieve. I beg of you that Dame Judith’s efforts must not be in vain. It is in your hands to push it and to continue to move forward. That people will see and say of a truth, you have given this woman a reason to smile.

“I want to thank the NDDC for believing in this woman (Dame Judith) and for giving her the opportunity to be what she wants to be. I call on other women and other philanthropists to support and give her everything that she needs to move forward.

“If her husband had not pushed her, if he had not talked to her and encouraged her, she will not be what she is today. We are very proud of you (Dame Judith). To whom much is given, much is required. The people of Rivers State and other Niger Deltans are very proud of you for supporting her (Dame Judith)”

The spokesman of the beneficiaries, Nwonodi Wosu, while showing appreciation to ESI, NDDC and others, stated that the 100 graduands were glad with the capacity building and acquisition of skills, reiterating that the future of Niger Delta and Nigeria lied in the youths.

Wosu, who disclosed that the beneficiaries had rigorous training for four weeks, lauded the president of ESI and NDDC for believing in them, for the support and opportunities given to them, while assuring that they would not abuse the privilege.

  • Why Wike still hates Buhari, Amaechi – Rivers APC

Why Wike still hates Buhari, Amaechi – Rivers APC

*President was never under pressure to declare state of emergency in Rivers, insists APC

The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress ( APC ) has revealed that Governor Nyesom Wike still hates President Muhammadu Buhari and Transportation Minister, Rotimi Amaechi, for masterminding the ouster from office in 2015 of the then President Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ).

It also insisted that President Buhari was never under pressure to declare a state of emergency in Rivers, as alleged by Wike.

Rivers APC, through Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, the Senior Special Assistant on Media/Public Affairs Consultant to Rivers State Chairman, Chief Davies Ikanya, stated these yesterday in Port Harcourt.

Rivers governor, while receiving Anglican Bishops of Niger Delta Province at the Government House, Port Harcourt over the weekend, alleged that President Buhari was under intense pressure from leaders of the APC to declare a state of emergency in Rivers.

The main opposition party in Rivers ( APC ) said: “Wike’s hatred for President Buhari and Amaechi is legendary, since the two APC leaders masterminded the ouster from office of his ATM, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, under whose watch our common patrimony was looted with impunity.

Because of this, he is ever ready to use any forum to castigate, insult and malign these two great leaders, not minding the dire consequences.

“President Buhari never complained to Wike of any pressure to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State. We are shocked that Wike could bring the exalted office of the governor to odium, in such a reckless manner, to ascribe to President Buhari something he never said.

“To the best of our knowledge, the three issues that Wike discussed with President Buhari were Ogoni clean-up, the Nkpogu Junction (Port Harcourt) incident with Amaechi, where attempt was made on the life of the Transportation Minister and the detention of Wike’s Chief Security Officer (CSO) for one week.

“Nobody is interested in declaring a state of emergency in Rivers State, not minding the abysmal failure of Wike to ensure protection of the lives and property of the people of Rivers State.

“We urge Wike not only to call himself to order, but to formally apologise to President Buhari for ascribing words he never uttered to him, to score cheap publicity, always associated with him.”

Rivers APC also stated that the Neighborhood Watch about being established by Wike’s government would be used to cause more mayhem in Rivers state, to boast his chances during the 2019 governorship election, declaring that the Rivers governor stood no chance in any election, without violence.

The main opposition party reassured the peace-loving people of Rivers state and other Nigerians that not minding the abysmal failure of Wike in governance, the Federal Government would always protect lives and property in the Niger Delta state.

  • 2019 elections our last battle – Amaechi

2019 elections our last battle – Amaechi

The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, on Saturday described the 2019 general election as the last battle for members of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He also assured that there would not be imposition of candidates by the APC during this year’s primaries.

Amaechi, the leader of the APC in the South-south zone, stated these during a reception organized for him as grand patron of Ikwerre Youth Movement (IYM) at the Movement’s national secretariat at Isiokpo, Ikwerre local government area of the state.

He said: “The 2019 elections, especially the governorship, are our last battle. If we win, we will take over Rivers State. If we lose in the election, we will go home and rest.

“We will not impose any candidate. Anybody who will go for any position, like chairmanship, should go for primaries. Anybody who wins will be the party’s candidate.”

The former Rivers State governor said it was important to ensure rotation of power among the ethnic nationalities in the state, adding that there was no need for Ikwerre people to monopolise political power in the state.

He admonished members of the APC and IYM to participate in the ongoing voter registration, reiterating that only votes would remove the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from power in Rivers State.

Amaechi added: “As Ikwerre people, we must give out the power to other ethnic nationalities. But we will be in a position to take it back at any time. Your future is in your hands.

“The President (Muhammadu Buhari) said that there would be no rigging during the 2019 elections. It is to our advantage. Go and register to be eligible to vote and to put the candidates of your choice in power.”

  • Non-violent political philosophy hailed at colloquium

The non-violent approach of Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi to political struggles has been hailed at a colloquium in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

A lecturer at the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), Prof. Andrew Efemini, who spoke at the colloquium organised by a civil society group, Society for the Promotion of Better Nigeria,  to mark the 10th anniversary of the October 2007 Supreme court judgment that gave victory to ex-Governor Rotimi Amaechi, said Nigeria has not experienced development since amalgamation in 1914.

The colloquium was titled “Amaechi: the long road to victory, my story”. It held in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

Speaking on the sub-topic, “Power Generation”, the Professor of Philosophy of Development described the country’s rural communities as modern caves.

He said: “Development is about human beings, it is about man, and when it comes to the issue of development, Nigerian has not developed since the amalgamation in 1914. We are experiencing economic activity, all society experience economic activities, but all countries are not experiencing development.

“Nigeria is one of the few countries of the world that is under-developing. The standard of living of the people is systematically dropping by the day in this country.

“Hunger, illiteracy, number of poor students who cannot pay fees are increasing, but we can point to roads being building, unemployment is increasing. The number of students who cannot go to school (illiterates), in Nigeria currently is 65 million. This was confirmed by the Federal Ministry of Education. The rural communities of Nigeria are modern caves.”

He described Amaechi as a lover of education. He faulted the decision of Governor Nyesom Wike to cancel the overseas scholarship awards to indigenes of the state.

”However, the truth is that in spite of all that had been said about the positive virtues, activities and projects of Amaechi, project execution is not the yardstick of assessing government; if that is done, our country will remain underdeveloped in perpetuity.”

He advocated for a political revolution that would turn around the fortune of the country and her citizens. He lauded Amaechi’s non-violent approach in fighting for his rights, describing him as a person who believes in the rule of law.

Speaking on the topic, “The elements of Struggle and Power: Amaechi in the eyes of the Nigerian democracy, lesson for the youths”, the factional National President of Civil Liberty Organization (CLO), Igo Akeregha described Amaechi as one of the most controversial politicians in the contemporary Nigerian politics, adding that his struggle to entrench the rule of law deepened the country’s democratic space.

Akeregha said: “Indeed there is something to pick from Amaechi political philosophy that enhances the boundary of a progressive orientation to the emerging generation of Niger Delta youths.”

He pointed out that Amaechi’s brand of resistance politics should galvanise a new political consciousness and development in the future.

The facilitator of the conference, comrade Livingstone Wechie said the event was meant to chart a course for the emerging generation, the youths.

Wechie said the gathering was informed by the worry that the axiom, “youths are the leaders of tomorrow” appears not factual but sweet talk to calm the youths.

“Seated here today is that future we keep talking about that the youths are the future, and that impression has not been so, having been so for too long, the question has ran time and time again, for how long will we be the future?

“Today should serve as a sober reflection drawing strength as the passable study on the political character of Rotimi Amaechi, as a governance model and the leadership models that characterise his political career, what we can learn from it and add to ourselves and how we can go from here and take over the future that we have long been promised.

“The man Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi is viewed from different perspectives by different individuals based on either the information available to them or their encounters with him and various other factors. But part of the challenge that has formed the meeting (the Colloquium), is what do we do as an emerging generation to hold sway in the future that is before us politically.”
