  • RRS nabs suspected fraudster

Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) have arrested the leader of a four-man fraud syndicate, Chibuzor Osuji.

A statement by RRS yesterday said Osuji led a four-man fraud syndicate operating in Ikeja, Ojota, Ojodu, Berger, Ogba, College Road and Agege.

He was reportedly caught after their victim lured him into the waiting hands of police officers after his gang had swindled the 34-year-old woman of N165,000.

The suspect’s role in the gang, police said, was to prophesy for victims after they must have been lured into their offices at 8, Afolabi Street, Iju Shaga and 7, Salami Street, Oko Oba, Agege.

The gang was said to have used fake dollars to entrap their victims.

Osuji allegedly told RRS that his gang members comprising Frank, Stella and Emeka, daily lured suspects, who they tricked into their dollar-making scam.

The statement said after luring the victim to their office, he (Osuji) would be invited as a pastor to pray for the victim.

Osuji said in the process of praying for the victim, he would request for money for anointing oil, chemicals to wash the money and other charges.

Frustration, he told RRS, made him join the gang three years ago.

Osuji was quoted as saying: “Although there are many gangs that we operate with, I only have four members in my own gang. We operate at Agege, Ogba, College Road, Ojodu Berger, Ojota, Ikeja and Alausa.

“I collected N120,000 from the victim. I know that my colleagues withdrew N45,000 from her account, using her ATM card. I am ready to refund the money.”

The victim (name withheld) said she boarded a taxi at Ojota to Ojodu Berger.

She said: “We were still at Oregun when the driver picked another passenger. It was at that juncture that they started tricking me.  I ended up in their office at Iju, where they collected my money, including the one in my account. They made me swear to an oath never to inform anyone. Thereafter, Osuji told me to go and get another N60,000 to complete the ritual.

“After collecting N165,000, they still wouldn’t let me rest. I borrowed N60,000 being the balance of what they needed. I was on the way to hand it over to them when I regained consciousness. Luckily for me, with the assistance of the patrol team of RRS, I was able to lure Osuji out and got him arrested.”

Police Commissioner Zubairu Muazu directed that the gang members be arrested.

He urged police operatives to rid every part of the state of black spots.

  • RRS arrests seven suspected robbers

Operatives of the Lagos State Rapid Response Squad (RRS) have arrested seven suspected robbers, said to have terrorised residents of College Road, Fagba and Abattoir in Agege area of Lagos State.

They were nabbed around 9pm last Thursday (Valentine’s Day) on College Road, Ifako-Ijaiye, after robbing over five people of their belongings.

The suspects, Lekan Akinyemi, 23, Chimeze Ofulie, 18, Babangida Abdullahi, 22, Abubakar Umaru, 30, Samuel Oyinloye, 24, Timileyin Oladipupo, 27 and Habeeb Olayinka were said to have been armed with knives and other weapons.

The police said they robbed Agafe Augustine, who alighted from a taxi on College Road, Ifako-Ijaiye, snatching his phone, N14,000 and a handbag.

The victim told the police in his statement that he allowed them to have their way because they were many and armed.

He said: “I allowed them rob me because they were many and were holding dangerous weapons, but I trailed them to an open place before raising the alarm. This attracted the attention of some RRS officers on patrol. They arrested some of the hoodlums.

“They also robbed other victims, including a girl in company of her boyfriend. They dispossessed them of their phones and stabbed her boyfriend, who refused to give them his phone after parting with his wallet.”

Confessing to the crime, one of the suspects told the police that they usually operated at night, dispossessing passers-by of their phones, money, jewellery, among others.

The police said investigation showed that Oladipupo, alias Timi Yahoo, specialised in working on SIM cards of the stolen phones, to determine which ones were Internet banking-enabled.

This, they said, would facilitate the robbers’ access to the victims’ accounts to transfer their money.

Oladipupo told the police: “I have worked on many SIM cards given to me by Lekan and others at Agege Abattoir. What I do is to further increase our gain from the robbery by transferring victims’ money from their bank accounts after using some software to determine how much are lodged inside their accounts. We share the proceeds.”

Police Commissioner Zubairu Muazu said the suspects would be transferred to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) for investigation, adding that they would be prosecuted after investigation.

The fire, which started at about 2am in front of a private school at 4, Segun Akinola Street opposite Tiper Garage near Awori Bus stop in Abule Egba.

It was said to have been triggered by activities of vandals, who brought in three tankers and syphoned Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).

Narrating how she was burnt, the widow said they were sleeping when she heard a loud sound and people screaming.

“We were sleeping when we started hearing shouts. I woke up and saw fire inside my home with plenty heat.

“The first thing that came to my mind was to rescue my children. I was able to get the other two out unhurt but when I went for Samuel, the fire caught up with us.

According to residents, the vandals who dug a hole to connect their hosts to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) pipelines had dropped the host inside the gutter without shutting the valves.

The PMS was said to have circulated through the gutter to Abbatoir where it sparked fire apparently as a result of activities of early morning butchers.

“It is not true that people were scooping fuel. If at all people did something like that, maybe they were those who did not witness the December 26, 2006, where hundreds of people scooping fuel were roasted alive,” she said.

Lagos fire service personnel were still there putting finishing touches on the remaining fire to avoid burning further.

General Manager Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) Adesina Tiamiyu, Police Commissioner Imohimi Edgal and officials from NNPC, other agencies visited the affected areas.

The Commander, Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Tunji Disu, an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), was on the spot with his men preventing hoodlums from looting victims’ property and money when they ran for their lives.

Personnel of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Red Cross officials were also on ground.

According to Tiamiyu, the fire affected nine streets, destroyed 38 vehicles, four tricycles, 71 shops, 30 rooms, two blocks of flat and a church auditorium.
