    RRS arrests suspected fraudster

    Rapid Response Squad operatives have arrested a suspected fraudster.

    Dare Yusuf, 31-year-old who lives at 1, Abayomi Jones, Oke-Ilube Ikotun Lagos, was arrested after tricking a victim into buying a substance, Adija, used to print fake notes.

    Yusuf with two others, Seun and Ayo (still at large), RRS said, specialise in defrauding innocent Lagosians.

    RRS said he confessed that Ayo is the ‘Catcher’, Seun is the ‘Jejeti’ while he (Yusuf) is the ‘Sitter’.

    He was quoted as saying: “Ayo approached the victim to inquest about a location he was going and told the person he was going there to sell Adija worth between N800,000 to N1m.

    “Seun appeared, Ayo then requested the victim and Seun to accompany him to the place with a promise to give each of them a sum N200,000 each for helping him. Seun took them to Yusuf’s office in Idi-Araba.

    Yusus used the Adija to produce about N2 million with some other chemicals.”

    RRS said the trio duped another victim of N46,000,  iPhone 6  and Techno W6 at Ikate, Surulere, Lagos sometime in August.

    Yusuf said he has been into the business for years.

    Techno W6 was recovered from the suspect.

    He has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigative Department (SCID), panti, Yaba, Lagos Mainland for further investigations.

    Police spokesman Olarinde Famous Cole, a Superintendent (ASP) advised members of the public to be more vigilant and report any suspicious act to the police.

    Rapid Response Squad (RRS) operatives have arrested a suspected human trafficker who attempted to move two teenagers to Ivory Coast for prostitution.

    The suspect, Martha Edea, 30, a native of Cross River State was arrested in Lagos and the two victims she got in Edo State rescued.

    According to the police, the mother of two confessed that she was also a victim of human trafficking, adding that she was deceived by one Mariam, who told her she would get a good job in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

    Instead of a good job, Edea said she was forced into prostitution and she slaved for several months to pay back her custodian the amount spent in taking her to the country.

    She said: “I worked for three months to pay Mariam about 300,000 CFA (N180,000) to balance her for my transportation into Ivory Coast and also for connecting me.

    “After collecting the money, Mariam moved to Spain and left me in Abidjan, where I continued prostitution.”

    The suspect, who said, she couldn’t break even in the business after Mariam relocated, stated that a friend advised her to come to Nigeria and recruit young girls.

    She said she came to Nigeria and went to Edo State, where she met two young ladies Favour and Deborah.

    “Favour took me to one Francess Bamidele, who she said was her friend and will like to be taken out of the country for prostitution.

    “Deborah took me to Elo Etim, 18. She said she was eager to travel abroad to hustle. I paid Favour and Deborah N10,000 each for their assistance in getting the girls.

    “I also met with Elo’s mother, I told her what her daughter was about to embark on in Abidjan and she agreed to it. She prayed for her and wished her good luck,” she said.

    Bamidele, a school dropout, said she was told prostitution was very lucrative in the Francophone country, adding that she accepted to follow them without telling her guardian.

    RRS offer emergency service to accident victims

    One of the patrol teams of the operatives of Rapid Response Squad of the Lagos State Police Command on monday put into use one of the First Aid boxes supplied by Lagos State Government to the unit to assist accident victims during emergencies.

    The patrol team, which was on the Third Mainland Bridge heading towards the Island noticed a traffic caused by a burning Ford 4Wheel Drive with built – up traffic behind it.

    The team abandoning its vehicle to join in putting out the fire heard a loud noise from some of the vehicles in traffic.

    A Volkswagen LT Lagos colour commercial bus, with the registration number BOG 340 XR had a break failure. It rammed a Sequoia Toyota (MUS 953 BZ) after brushing a Honda Accord (RSH 163 CL).

    Over 4 passengers in the Volkswagen bus sustained various forms of injuries which necessitated the deployment of First Aid treatment by the Rapid Response Officers before the arrival of medical personnel.

    The State Government had sometime in April, 2017 started training and retaining of RRS officers on application of first aid treatment in emergencies, CPR, Controlling bleeding and fracture management.

    About 150 branded First Aid Boxes were handed over to RRS by Lagos State Government in June 2017 for distribution to RRS patrol vehicles.

    RRS arrests five for ‘theft’ of rail irons

    The Rapid Response Squad (RRS) has arrested five men for allegedly stealing 28 iron ballasts meant for rail lines.

    Hameed Atairu, 25; Akeem Muritala, 23; Lawal Muritala, 25; Tunde Olatunji, 27; and Sarafa Ishola, 38; were arrested on Friday at about 1:15am at Agege.

    They were said to in a Vanagon bus marked JJJ929EL driven by Ishola, conveying the stolen items.

    According to the police, the suspects claimed to be scrap dealers, saying that they bought the ballasts from a Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) official.

    “However, preliminary investigation by the police revealed that the iron ballast were stolen from where they were kept for use.

    ‘Further investigation revealed that the iron ballast were meant for the basement of rail lines.

    “The suspects, three of whom are ex-convicts, said they raised N35,000 among themselves to pay for the iron ballast,” an RRS source said.

    The command’s spokesman, Olarinde Famous-Cole, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) told The Nation that the suspects and exhibits have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID), Panti for further action.

    Police arrests fraudster over admission racketeering

    Operatives of the Police Rapid Response Squad (RRS) have arrested an undergraduate for allegedly defrauding university admission seekers.

    Mayaki Best, a 300- level student of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, allegedly cloned the website of Lagos State College of Health Technology and duped several admission seekers of large sums of money.

    The police alleged that the suspect also impersonated the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) by pretending to be an auctioneer online.

    Best was apprehended at Auchi last Wednesday after he was tracked to Edo State following a petition by the Provost, Lagos State College of Health Technology, Dr. Moyo Kasim.

    According to the police, Dr. Kasim had petitioned the state police commissioner on the alleged fraudulent activity of a certain Dr. Odeh Philip Oteche, who cloned the website of the institution and requested varying sums of money from applicants.

    The petition was referred to the Commander RRS, Tunji Disu, an Assistant Commissioner (ACP), with a copy of the cloned application and bank details which showed applicants paid N2,500 per form.

    Police said Best was arrested with three Automated Teller Machine (ATM) cards, one of which belonged to Otache Philip Odeh, the alleged owner of the fraudulent account.

    The two other ATM cards, the police said belonged to Abua Sunday. They said unfilled soft copies of Customs papers were also found in his possession.

    “In his confession to the police, Best said he was the brain behind the cloning of the institution’s website and had withdrawn series of deposits made to the accounts by different applicants.

    “He added that he veered into admission racketing when online Customs auction of automobile and seized items failed to yield expected returns. Apart from these, the suspect disclosed that he also used local and international dating platforms for scamming.

    “Through the cloned website, Best said he had collected deposits ranging from N2,500 to N157,000. He said one Charles and Ganiyu Balogun now at large were accomplices.

    “He stated that he opened Access Bank and UBA accounts with Sunday Abua for Nigerian Customs auction vehicles and goods.

    “He disclosed that the three facebook accounts of female Custom Officers he had been using and pictures of automobiles in display were sourced from Google,” the police said.

    The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence (SCIID), Panti, Yaba.

    RRS arrests four fraud suspects

    The Rapid Response Squad (RRS) has arrested four persons suspected to be members of two fraud syndicates on Lagos Mainland.

    They were arrested during two operations at Ikeja, Maryland, Ojodu-Berger, Agege and Oshodi.

    According to the RRS, Chinasa Sunday, 44, and Osadebe Aigbe, 30, who allegedly defrauded a lady, Grace Enitan of N85,000, were apprehended at Ikeja on Thursday after days of surveillance.

    It was gathered that the victim reported to the RRS Headquarters in Alausa after four men, who picked her in a taxi, duped her of the amount.

    Enitan was said to have identified Sunday and Aigbe as members of the gang that defrauded her. A third suspect identified simply as Martin is said to be at large.

    Sunday, who claimed he joined the gang in February after he lost his job, said his job was to monitor the victim, adding that Enitan was picked up at Olowopopo Way, Ikeja.

    Sunday Atanda, 56, and Fausat Tijani, 58, said to be members of the second syndicate were arrested on Saturday after a failed attempt to fleece Rukayat Aderinwale of N120,000.

    Aderinwale, a food vendor, was said to have been hypnotised at Oshodi in a bid to dispossess her of her money, jewellery and mobile phone.

    It was gathered that the suspects with three others at large, led the hypnotised victim to another location but she regained consciousness midway and screamed for help.

    In a statement, RRS said its officers moved to her rescue and caught Atanda and Tijani.

    Atanda, who lives at 13, Pero Street, Agege, was said to have mentioned Kayode, Shina and Lateef as fleeing members of his gang.

    He said they wanted to dispossess the victim of her valuables, adding that he joined the syndicate to feed his family.

    Atanda said they operated between Oshodi and Agege adding that Lateef is the ring leader.

    Spokesman for the command, Olarinde Famous-Cole, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), said investigation was ongoing.

    RRS arrest six hoodlums for ‘illegal’ ticketing

    Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) have arrested six hoodlums over illegal toll on commercial buses in Lagos.

    The suspects were arrested at Ojodu-Berger with unsold tickets found on them by a team led by the Commander, Olatunji Disu, an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP).

    Their arrest followed complaints by motorists.

    The Nation gathered that the hoodlums had since May, laid siege to the expressway, forcing commercial vehicles to purchase ticket at the transit park constructed by the state government.

    Armed with the complaints, RRS officers went after the hoodlums and caught six of them in the act.

    Our correspondent gathered that the RRS has beefed up security at strategic locations across the state, especially Iddo Terminus to stem cases of robbery.

    The state police command has deployed more policemen to Oyingbo, Idunmota and Ebute Metta to tackle cases of bag snatching and traffic robbery in the areas.

    RRS nabs wanted robbery suspect

    A Rapid Response Squad (RRS) has arrested a 20-year-old man, Ahmed Lateef, who has been on the police wanted list for armed robbery. He was arrested on Saturday morning while returning from an alleged robbery in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

    Lateef, a.k.a ‘Ajona’ was said to have confessed that he participated in robberies in Lagos, Oyo and Ogun states.

    The suspect, who is from Osogbo, the Osun State capital, was quoted by RRS as saying that he participated in two robbery operations twice a week in company of Enu–Ose, his associate.

    Lateef, according to RRS, said they went to Kuto in Abeokuta to burgle a computer and phone retail outlet. He was arrested with a motorbike marked OGUN:MEK 339 WM, which he also confessed to have stolen in Kuto.

    The suspect said there was ready buyers for every stolen item such as jewellery, phones, motorcycles and lap tops.

    His gang, he allegedly told interrogators usually hired metal cutters in Mushin for N10,000 per operation.

    He listed other gang members as Noah, Segun, Lekan, Ishan– Idi, Rilwan, Shile, Ege and Jandor.

    Two of his gang members, Seyi Adebayo, 26 and Saheed Funsho, 23, and two receivers of stolen items have been moved to the Lagos State Task Force at Oshodi for prosecution.

    RRS recovers AK 47 from fleeing suspects

    Rapid Response Squad (RRS) operatives have recovered an AK 47 rifle dropped by three fleeing young men in Apapa.

    The operatives also arrested a 23-year-old man Ayobami Adedeji for alleged bag snatching.

    The operatives, who were on routine patrol of Apapa sighted the men around 11p.m last Friday carrying a bag.

    On sighting the officers, they dropped the bag containing the riffle and fled.

    The rifle has been deposited at the RRS Headquarters.

    Adedeji, who operates on an okada was chased by the operatives on routine patrol of Kola Bus Stop, in Alagbado, Lagos, after snatching a hand bag around 10pm.

    He with his accomplice, who he referred to as Aboki, snatched the hand bag of Kudirat Oyebade at Kola Bus Stop.

    The operatives, who were close to the scene of the incident, chased the motorcyclist and arrested him.

    Adedeji was quoted by RRS as saying: “I was a bus conductor. I went to Kotangora market to meet Aboki on how to raise money for ourselves.

    “We have been together for a long time. At around 2p.m on Monday, we perfected the plan to operate together on Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway but our focus were Adura and Council bus stops around Alagbado. Our priorities were handbags and purses.”

    “We had snatched two bags and my colleague was keeping the money before our last botched operation. This was our first time.

    “Unfortunately for me, I didn’t know RRS operatives were monitoring us. I snatched the bag and they chased us into the streets. My colleague escaped and I was arrested.

    “I dropped out in SS1 after losing my mother. My father was just a ceremonial father. He never cared about me since the death of my mother. He never assisted me but I had to fend for myself after the death of my mother.”

    Adedeji has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti.

    Ambode gives 150 first aid boxes to RRS

    Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode yesterday handed over 150 First Aid Kits to the Rapid Response Squad (RRS).

    The kits were received by RRS Commander Olatunji Disu, an Assistant Commissioner of Police.

    Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Office of the Chief of Staff, Mr. Oluseyi Whenu, Ambode said the provision of the kits would be continuous.

    He said about 380 RRS officers had been trained by the government on accident scene safety, controlling bleeding, cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and moving accident victims.

    As more training is provided, the state would also provide more kits for the officers to cater for emergencies, he added.

    The governor said training became necessary for RRS officers as first responders to emergencies to enable them save lives and provide first aid before the arrival of medical personnel.

    Disu thanked the government for its gesture training and providing the kits.

    He advised the public to be security conscious and to always use the emergency lines (112 and 767) in times of distress.
