Rudeboy’s record deal demands spark controversy

Controversy has erupted following Paul Okoye aka Rudeboy’s recent video in which he outlined his stringent requirements for signing new artists to his record label.

In a post that quickly gained attention online, Rudeboy, one half of the now-defunct music duo P-Square, announced that he would require artists to provide documentation of landed property and agree to a ₦10 million fine if caught smoking Indian hemp.

“Some artists believe they are bigger than their record label, so I’m telling you my demands now,” Rudeboy stated in the video. “You will bring landed property, your parents will sign, and if I ever catch you smoking, it’s minus ₦10 million. You are automatically owing me ₦10 million. That’s my policy because I see upcoming artists saying I’m wicked. Sign an artist with a lot of money, and they will still mess you up. That’s why if I’m asked when I will sign an artist, I’ll tell you I don’t know.”

Okoye’s strict conditions have sparked a heated debate on social media, with many users criticising his approach and comparing him to successful artists like Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Davido, who are known to smoke publicly and still dominate music charts.

One of the social media users, who took Rudeboy on the demands, said, “You don’t smoke weed, that’s why your music ain’t trending anymore. Don’t you see the likes of Burna Boy, Wizkid, Omay Lay? I think I’ve made my point—weed is good.”

Another user expressed support for other industry figures, saying, “Big shoutout to OGs like Don Jazzy, Olamide, Davido, even Seyi Vibez and others who are putting artists on without collecting any of these. Later they will say Yoruba tax; you can’t help your fellow brothers willingly.”

However, some industry insiders supported Rudeboy’s stance.

Chuddy K, who has had similar experiences, shared, “Well, I get where he’s coming from. I signed an artist who smoked weed before. His breakfast is loud first thing in the morning. Anything that has to do with smoke, he’s not just interested. He will invest his allowance, then ask me for money twice before his weekly pay.”

Adding a professional perspective, a popular pharmacist said, “A lot of people don’t know there’s a difference between inspiration and stimulation. Weed can only stimulate you, making you feel like you are what you are actually not! No matter the level of stimulation, you can’t bring out what you don’t have on the inside! Inspiration, on the other hand, comes from channelling your mind to critical thinking, which isn’t induced by any stimulant. Only by inspiration can you actually bring out something new and out of the box. Stimulation will only make you feel like you are doing great, but in reality, you are not doing anything extraordinary.”
