Nigeria demands restructuring and expansion of UN Security Council

Nigeria has demanded an immediate restructuring and expansion of the UN Security Council to correct the injustices meted out against Africa in the composition of the prestigious 15-member body.

Nigeria’s position was delivered by Amb. Babatunde Nurudeen, Permanent Representative of Nigeria to ECOWAS at the UN General Assembly Debate on ‘Question of Equitable Representation on and Increase in the Membership of the Security Council’.

The Security Council is UN’s most powerful principal organ charged with the maintenance of international peace and security, accepting new members to the UN and approving any changes to the UN Charter.

Its powers include the establishment of peacekeeping operations, the establishment of international sanctions, the authorisation of military action and it is the only UN body with the authority to issue binding resolutions to member states.

Nurudeen regretted that 72 years after its formation, Africa continued to be marginalised in the representation on the prestigious body in spite of its ability and capacity.

He stressed that a reformed Council would entail a restructuring and expansion of its membership to take account of, inter-alia, the increased membership of UN and the need to reflect the interests of all the constituent regions.

The Nigerian envoy said: “Nigeria and other emerging nations continue to demonstrate the capacity to add value to the work, of all the organs of the United Nations, including the Security Council.

“For that reason, we must now commit ourselves to accelerating the long-overdue reforms of the Security Council. This will no doubt make the Council more equitable, more inclusive and more effective”.

Russia, UK, France, China, and U.S. serve as the body’s only five permanent members that can veto any substantive Security Council resolution, including those on the admission of new member states or candidates for Secretary-General.

Nurudeen stressed: “Nigeria believes that a reformed Security Council with expanded permanent membership would benefit from the unique experiences and capacities that regional representatives could bring to bear on its work.

“Nigeria has always expressed its support for the advancement of the intergovernmental negotiations process in an open, inclusive and transparent manner”.

The Nigerian envoy re-affirmed Nigeria’s very strong adherence to the Common African Union Position on the entire subject of Security Council reform.

“That is important in order to correct the historical injustice done to the continent and its continued marginalisation over so many years.

“For that reason, we wish to underscore the overriding need to ensure that the interests of Africa continue to be advanced and safeguarded.

“African States have offered a coherent, practical and persuasive blueprint for the Council’s reform.

“We have come up with a common position, which asserts the right of our continent that has for so long been marginalised, and we recognise the legitimate aspirations of other regions to be fully represented in the Council.

According to him, the clear objective of the reform process is based on the sovereign equality of all Member States and on the need to adhere to the principles of democratisation and inclusiveness in the UN.

“It is undoubtedly a worthwhile process. Therefore, we must muster the desired will that can lead to the achievement of a reformed Security Council sooner rather than indefinitely,” Nurudeen said.

Messi: I hope football repays its debt to me

Lionel Messi has revealed that he still bears the sad memory of losing the 2014 World Cup but hopes Russia 2018 brings good tidings for him.

The Barcelona forward led a team of Argentine players that had lost three cup finals – 2014 World Cup lost to Germany and back to back Copa America final lost to Chile.

The five-time Ballon D’or winner was instrumental for his country who almost missed the chance of qualifying for Russia 2018 – scoring three goals against Ecuador.

After Argentina 3-0 win of Ecuador, head coach, Jorge Sampaoli said that “football owes Messi a World cup.

When Messi was asked to comment on his coach assertion that football owes him a World Cup in an exclusive interview with fifa.com, the Argentine captain laughingly agreed with his coach.

”Yes, I did hear it, and he said it to me too. I hope football does end up paying me! (laughs).”

Meanwhile, Messi has said that his side 4-2 loss to the Super Eagles of Nigeria in a friendly match last month would count for nothing when the two sides lock horns once again in Russia next year.

Speaking on Argentina’s Group D opponents in Russia 2018,  Messi added:  “Nigeria one day they score four goals, the next one, they leave plenty spaces for you to do anything.

(Iceland) “Might seem easy, but they are tough and well organised on defence.

(Croatia) “They give you more room to play, but have great players.”

First Official W/cup Store Opens in Central Moscow

The first official World Cup store opened in the center of Moscow on Tuesday, just in time for the New Year’s shopping rush.

The shop is located on the first floor of Detsky Mir, or Central Children’s Store, on Lubyanka, at walking distance from Red Square. It offers official World Cup souvenirs, ahead of the tournament in Russia next summer — such as the Telstar 18 football, t-shirts, backpacks and stationery, among other items.

St. Petersburg and other World Cup host cities will also have their own official fan stores, as the Russian authorities continue to clamp down on fakes.

Last week, border guards in Russia’s Far East confiscated 640 counterfeit stuffed toys of the official World Cup mascot, the wolf Zabivaka, the state news agency TASS reported earlier.

And in 2016, more than 61,000 counterfeit products with images of Zabivaka were found in Moscow, the Moskva 24 news channel reported earlier.

Nigerian national team the Super Eagles have opted for the  Sanatorium Mashuk Aqua-Therm Resort based in Pyatigorsk, South Russia.

Eagles play their first match against Croatia at the 35,000 –capacity Kaliningrad Stadium on Saturday, June 16 before taking on Iceland and lastly Argentina.

Kaliningrad is 1256 kilometers from Moscow and takes an hour fifty minutes by air.

  • Argentina must improve to succeed in Russia – Messi

Argentina must improve to succeed in Russia – Messi

Argentina captain Lionel Messi believes they need to improve if they are to stand a chance of winning next year’s FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Argentina, who reached the final in 2014, struggled during qualification for Russia, going through three coaches before securing their place at the tournament.

And it was all thanks to a Messi hat-trick in a 3-1 win away to Ecuador in the final qualifier.

Messi’s side will kick off their World Cup campaign against Iceland on June 16, before facing Croatia and Nigeria in their other group stage fixtures.

Next year’s tournament may be the last chance for the 30-year-old Messi to win a major trophy with Argentina and the FC Barcelona forward is already concerned.

He says they need to make changes in order to overcome more fancied countries.

“We had a difficult time (in qualifying), but we had our moments,” Messi said.

“But it’s true that we need to improve if we want to be world champions. Right now we’re not far off, but there are better sides than us, such as Brazil, Germany, France and Spain.”

As well as losing to Germany in the 2014 World Cup final, Argentina were also defeated by Chile in successive Copa America finals in 2015 and 2016.

Messi, however, believes they should have celebrated at least two victories.

“I never went back over the finals (we lost). We deserved to win them, in spite of not playing that well. We still had the best chances, both in the World Cup and Copa America,” he said.

“I’d have to watch them again to see what we didn’t get right in order not to win them. But right here I believe we should have won at least two of them.”

Messi and his team mates have had a tumultuous relationship with the Argentine media, boycotting them 12 months ago due to what the national team perceived as unfair treatment.

He said that media criticism has created a culture of fear within the squad.

“Criticism went above and beyond what is normal and became personal,” he said.

“The bitterness we feel is because we know what’s coming if things don’t go well for us. People want results and if they don’t get them, they want to see fresh blood. We don’t feel that way.”

Russia banned from 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang

Russia have been banned from competing as a team at the 2018 Winter Olympics, the International Olympic Committee has confirmed.

IOC president Thomas Bach confirmed the ban on Tuesday evening in Lausanne and said Russian athletes will only be eligible to compete under a neutral flag in South Korea, much like in athletics at the last summer games in Rio in 2016.

The ban stems from a 17-month investigation, headed by former Swiss president Samuel Schmid, into widespread doping at the 2014 Winter Olympics in the Russian city of Sochi, which has seen numerous medallists banned.

As a result of the investigation, former Russian sports minister Vitaly Mutko – now Vladimir Putin’s Deputy Prime Minister – has been banned from any participation in all future Olympic Games along with his former deputy Yuri Nagornykh.

Any Russian athletes ruled eligible after going through a thorough clearing process will only be allowed to compete as an ‘Olympic Athlete from Russia’ in a uniform bearing that name.

Should any of them claim a gold medal, they will stand on top of the podium and hear the Olympic Games anthem.

Second phase of tickets sales for the 2018 World cup in Russia opens Tuesday with fans able to purchase tickets for all matches except for the opening match and the final.

If the number of applications exceeds the number of available tickets, allocation will be by the random selection draw procedure. All customers will be notified about the status of their application by 12 March 2018 at the latest.

A total of 742,760 tickets were allocated during the two periods of sales phase 1. While most of the applications in sales phase 1 came from Russia, international demand increased steadily and has accounted for 47 per cent of all applications so far. Fans from the USA, Brazil, Germany, China, Mexico, Israel, Argentina, Australia, and England all rank in the top ten in this regard.

At the request of the Russian authorities, all fans attending matches at the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia need to apply for a FAN ID – the official identity document issued to fans. W/Cup: Don’t expect profit analysts tell Russia

Russia economy is not likely to benefit from the 2018 FIFA World Cup, despite huge government spending, financial analysts have hinted .  Draws for the Mundial which will see 32 countries battle for honours and the multi billion dollars largesse that goes with it, was done Friday  with the host nation expected to flag off action on June 14.

Russia is expected to spend $13.2 billion on the tournament, in what will be the costliest football competition in history.

Analysts surveyed by the RBC business portal on Friday forecast a short-term economic bump resulting from temporary jobs and an influx of spending during the contest.

Economic analyst Sergei Drobyshevsky told RBC that Russia’s GDP would increase by around 0.2 percent from April to September 2018. Hotels, restaurants, and souvenir shops, he said, will receive most of the profits, due to higher prices and an increased demand for consumer goods and services.

Football fans will add around $3 billion to the Russian economy during the World Cup, Drobyshevsky added.

However, the World Cup effect will dissipate almost immediately after the final match, economic expert Dmitry Kulikov was cited as saying by RBC.

“All else being equal, the expected effect [of the tournament] on economic growth in [2018] will be equivalent to that of a statistical error,” Kulikov said.

Host nation Russia begin their campaign against Saudi Arabia in the opening match on June 14 in Moscow Luzhniki, Moscow. The second match will see them tackle Egypt June 19 in St Petersburg while the last group match will be against Uruguay June 25 in Samara.

Despite the worry over economic implication for the host country, participating countries stand a chance of carting away the chunk of money placed on the table by the World soccer ruling body FIFA.

FIFA has announced the 2018 FIFA World Cup prize money pool where they have allocated record $791 million for prize money, payments to clubs and player insurance fee. $400 million will be purely awarded to 32 national federations according to how they finish in the tournament with the eventual champion expected to cart away $38 million.

  • What chances for African contenders in Russia?

What chances for African contenders in Russia?

With the World cup draw now concluded the question what are the chances of African countries? What are their chances of surviving the group stage and progressing to the next stage?

Nigeria: Drawn in Group D against Argentina, Croatia and Iceland. The Super Eagles are not new comers to the world cup.  They have been to the world cup a record five times and Russia will be the sixth time. Interestingly the have a regular customer in Argentina. Although they have lost competitively at the world Cup where they faced Argentina but the feeling that they have always played them leaves a chance of turning the table.

The Eagles open with match against Croatia who will definitely not be a soft nut to crack.  They have been in the world cup four times, 1998, 2002, 2006 and 2014. They made it to the semifinal in France 98 but crashed out in the group stage in the others.

Iceland: Iceland are likely unless they spring a surprise to be the weeping boy of the group.  They are qualifying for the world cup for the first time they directly qualified after securing the first spot in their qualifying group on the final round. This meant that after 12 failed qualification campaigns, Iceland would appear at the World Cup for the first time in their history, and appear at only their second major international tournament, after qualifying for UEFA Euro 2016 two years earlier. But whether they are sent packing early or not they have already made a mark as one of the two smallest nations to reach the World Cup finals, breaking the record set by Trinidad and Tobago, the other being Panama.

Egypt: Last appeared at the World cup in 1990 in Italy the second time they will qualify having qualified for the first time in 1934 which Italy also hosted. They have been pitched against host nation Russia, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay. They are not likely to find Uruguay two time champions and regulars as the world cup cheap neither will Russia who have been at the world cup three times be a tea party considering that the home advantage and massive fan turn out that will be expected. Perhaps the team the only opponent they might rattle in this group would be Saudi Arabia who got to the round of 16 in 1994 and crashed out in the group stage in 1998 2002 and 2006.One of the memorable matches they will not forget in a hurry was the 8-0 demolition by Germany in 2002 in Sapporo.

Morocco: Last appeared at the world cup in 1998 in France where they left at the Group stage. Prior to that they had appeared in 1970, 1986 and 1994.  The highest they have reached was group of 16 in 1986.  They have been cited at the African team taking the strongest team to the world cup.  They have been pitches against 2010 champions Spain who are regulars at the world cup, Portugal who made it to the fourth place in 2006 and Iran who have qualified four times but crashed out in the first round.

The game against Iran may be the only semi easy tie for Morocco.

Tunisia: last appeared at the world cup in 2006 for the fourth time exiting at the group stage in all. Pitched against 1966 winners England, Belgium and Panama. It will neither be easy against England nor against Belgium but may be a bit soft against new comers panama who some say have already scored a point by qualifying for the first time in the first place.

Senegal: Expected to re-enact the feat they achieved in Korea 2002 where they went all the way to the quarter finals. Began the campaign with a lone goal defeat of France in the opener before losing to Turkey in the quarter final by a lone goal after extra time.  They had tough opponents in 2002 and cannot be said to have a tea party in the draw that pitched them against Poland, Columbia and Japan on Friday. If they tenacity for which they are known is still there they might emerge from the group.

Should Nigeria, Tunisia and Senegal emerge from their groups some will say they saw it coming but in football anything can happen and so Morocco and Egypt can battle their way.

  • No leadership crisis in Nigeria Football Supporters Club – Ikpea

No leadership crisis in Nigeria Football Supporters Club – Ikpea

Samuel Ikpea, President, Nigeria Football Supporters Club ( NFSC ), has debunked the statement credited to the Media Officer of Super Eagles, Toyin Ibitoye, that the club was enmeshed in leadership crisis.

Ikpea said this on Wednesday in Lagos while reacting to Ibitoye’s allegation on the leadership of the supporters club.

The Eagles spokesman had on Monday in a private newspaper interview allegedly said that the Nigeria Football Federation was mindful of the situation with the Nigeria Football Supporters Club, which is a private body.

He also said that hence, there were plans to ensure that the crisis did not affect the Eagles in Russia.

Ikpea quoted him as saying: “The Nigerian Football Supporters Club has split into two factions with Rev. Ikpea and Vincent Okumagba laying claims to the leadership of the body.

“The Ikpea faction is backed by majority of the members, including Rafiu Ladipo, who is the President-General of the body.

“While Okumagba is supported by the younger elements, who want change in leadership from Ladipo’s over 20 years of controlling the body.

“The club could not travel with the Super Eagles to Ndola where Zambia hosted Nigeria in the opening game of the Russia 2018 World Cup qualifiers.

“The Ikpea-led group arrived in Cameroun by road on match day when the Indomitable Lions hosted the Super Eagles in Yaoundé.

On the position of NFF over the issue, Ikpea said that it was unfortunate that the football house was feigning ignorance about the status of the association.

“There is no truth in a statement by Super Eagles Spokesman, Ibitoye, over their imaginary crisis. We had a legitimate election last year which has the NFF representative in attendance.

“There is no faction or crisis at all, I was duly and democratically elected at the July 10, 2016 election at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, so why the denial of the authenticity of headship of NFSC.

“What I expect from NFF is a role of bridge builder and not fanning the embers of disunity. The fact remains that the supporters club is a one body with no known faction,’’ he said.

Ikpea said that if NFF truly wanted to send a contingent to Russia 2018 World Cup, they knew who and who to contact.

“If the NFF truly want to sponsor some of us to Russia, they know who to contact there are no two ways to that. They are well aware of the status of our association.

“Maybe, this is another ploy to sponsor some of their cronies to the Mundial on government payroll by claiming that we are divided or did not know the faction to deal with.

“We want to appeal to NFF not to divide the house with undue interference and speeches that could set the association on the brink.

“The election which they failed to acknowledge was witnessed by the body’s council of Elders, Representatives from the NFF and Ministry of Sports,’’ he said.

On the issues around Okumagba, Ikpea said he has been officially dismissed from the club in 2015, adding that the club had been part and parcel of the Super Eagles qualifiers.

“We have been part of Eagles matches both home and away, where we spent our personal resources and even our lives to travel to Cameroon by road.

“About Okumagba, he and some members were officially dismissed from the club for anti-club activities and disrespect to the club.

“Their letters were forwarded to the NFF, Nigeria Police, Ministry of Sports and House of Assembly which they acknowledged, copies of the letters were documented,’’ he said.
