Football remains the greatest unifier of Nigerians – APC

The All Progressives Congress ( APC ) has said that sports in Nigeria, particularly football, remained one of the greatest unifier of people across political affiliations, religion, gender, tribe and other divides.

Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, APC National Publicity Secretary stated this in a statement on Saturday in Abuja.

Abdullahi joined millions of Nigerians in celebrating and congratulating the Super Eagles for their qualification to next year’s FIFA World Cup in Russia.

He also congratulated the Ministry of Sports, the Nigerian Football Federation, the technical crew, management, and backroom staff for securing Nigeria’s sixth appearance at the World Cup.

The APC spokesman said it was indeed a delight watching the Super Eagles defeat the Chipolopolo of Zambia in front of excited home fans at the Akwa Ibom International Stadium, Uyo.

He noted that the victory put Nigeria on an unassailable 13 points at the top of Group B and charged Nigerians to take advantage of the feat to further foster harmony amongst themselves.

Bolaji, a former sports minister, however, called on the sports authorities not to rest on their oars but to begin early preparation ahead of 2018 to ensure that the Super Eagles perform well at the global tournament.

Odegbami urges Nigerians to support Eagles against Zambia

An ex-international, Segun Odegbami, has appealed to Nigerians to support the Super Eagles in their match against the Chipolopolo of Zambia on Saturday in Uyo.

Odegbami on Friday in Ota, Ogun state said that this would qualify them for the Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Super Eagles, topping the Group B with 10 points, had earlier beat Chipolopolo of Zambia at home by 2-1 in the first leg.

According to him, Nigerians should support Super Eagles through vocal and their prayers, because it is a game that Nigeria must win.

”We must do everything possible to win the match so that we can qualify for Russia 2018 World Cup,” he said.

Odegbami, however, implored Nigerians to turn out massively at the Godwin Akpabio Stadium in Uyo to lift up the Super Eagles’ spirits.

The ex-international also urged Nigerians to leave the technical aspect to the coaching crews to decide.

  • No need for too much talk – Mikel Obi

No need for too much talk – Mikel Obi

Super Eagles’ captain Mikel Obi said on Wednesday that the Nigerian national team players have no need to say too much before Saturday’s 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Zambia’s Chipolopolo.

The second leg game of Group B between Nigeria and Zambia for the 2018 World Cup qualifier is scheduled for the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.

The outcome of the match would determine the chances of both teams towards qualification for the world cup in Russia.

Obi, said in Uyo at a reception held for the team by Akwa Ibom Governor, Udom Emmanuel, that the players know what is at stake and ready to give their best.

“We know how important the match is; that is enough motivation to go all out and give our very best.

“There are several players in this team who have not played at the FIFA World Cup, they want to be there in Russia next year.

“The talking will be done on the pitch. I have no doubt we have the quality to achieve victory, but we will not make the mistake of under rating the Zambians,’’ he said.

Obi said that the team’s good performance in previous matches was achieved due to the focus, determination and massive support of all Nigerians.

“We believe the same indices are in place for Saturday against Zambia; we have played four matches in the campaign so far, but this one is the match.

“We are fully focused and ready. All we want is the usual support and encouragement by everyone involved, including the fans that will turn out at the match venue,’’ he said.

Nigeria top Group B with 10 points from three wins and one draw.

Table-toppers Nigeria will qualify for a sixth FIFA World Cup appearance with the minimum victory on Saturday.

The match kicks off at 5pm.

Meanwhile, a statement by Ademola Olajire, NFF Communication Director, President of the federation, President of NFF, Amaju Pinnick, has tasked the Super Eagles to be calm but clinical against their opponent.

“The tendency is for teams to get uptight and tensed for this kind of match.

“I have spoken to them and the approach should be to take full control from the beginning and take the chances that come without being too anxious.

“We defeated the African champions, Cameroon, by maintaining focus and with the team imposing its game and taking the chances that came their way.

“That should be the approach for Saturday.”

Zambia last victory against Nigeria in a competitive football match at senior level was 32 years ago.

The two teams have played 18 matches in all, with the Eagles winning seven and Zambia winning five, with six draws.

This is only the second FIFA World Cup qualifying match between the two teams.

The first leg of the 2018 world cup qualifiers was won by the Eagles 2-1 in Ndola last year.

  • ‘Super Eagles going for outright win against Zambia’

‘Super Eagles going for outright win against Zambia’

The Super Eagles spokesman, Toyin Ibitoye, on Wednesday debunked the news that the team would be satisfied with a draw against Zambia, saying instead that the team would be going for an outright win.

Ibitoye said this in Lagos that the team would be aiming at defeating the Chipolopolo of Zambia in the crucial encounter in Uyo, Akwa Ibom.

Nigeria is on the brink qualifying for the 2018 Mundial in Russia with an emphatic win over the African champions 4-0 and the reverse fixture in Yaoundé which ended1-1.

Nigeria will play Zambia on Saturday at Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.

Nigeria got the first goal in Yaoundé after 30 minutes play through Moses Simon while Cameroun got their equaliser 15 minutes to go through a Vincent Aboubakar penalty.

The super eagles had started the campaign in what many soccer pundits predicted to be the group of death in a blistering form with a defeat 2-1of Zambia in Ndola to pick their first ever away win.

Goals from the premier league hotshots, Alex Iwobi and Kelechi Iheanacho in the 33rd and 43rd minutes, ensured the much needed bright start, while Zambia’s Mbesuma scored in the 70th minute.

Nigeria maintained the record when they defeated the highest ranked team in Africa, the Desert Warriors of Algeria in Uyo 3-1, courtesy of a brace from Victor Moses and a goal from Mikel Obi.

However, the Gernot Rohr’s men can take a watertight lead on the summit of the Group B if they defeat Zambia on Sunday.

A win means they will be on 13 points as against Zambia who will be rooted with seven points.

On the importance of the match against the Wedson Nyirenda-tutored team from the Southern part of Africa, Ibitoye said the team’s management was leaving no stone unturned.

He said that the Super Eagles Camp at the Le Meriden Hotel, was complete save the absence of Victor Moses who is been expected on Wednesday morning.

“The camp is bubbling with the influx of the players, they all arrived early enough and they are training well. We are expecting the last person, Moses, who will arrive this ( Wednesday ) morning.

“It is not true that we are contented with a draw according to some stories circulating around and which was attributed to the coach. All we want is an outright win.

“At present, there is no injury concern in the team, Iwobi trained with others and he is 100 per cent fit as well as other players. The fitness level is perfect.

“What we are saying is that the match against Zambia may not necessarily be a whitewash as we did against Cameroun.’’

“The scoreline may or may not be the same but the points are what we need. Three full points will make us qualify in style,’’ he said.

Oil gains as producers say market is rebalancing

Oil prices kept most of their gains from the previous session as major producers meeting in Vienna said the market was well on its way towards rebalancing.

The WTI crude front month discount to the same month of Brent futures hit 6.28 dollars, the widest since August 2015, as U.S.crude was pressured by hurricane damage to U.S. refineries.

Brent therefore rises to 63.19 dollars as report media hide price with ambiguous  coverage.Add 56.91 plus 91 dollars.

Brent crude futures was up 0.05 per cent at 56.88 dollars a barrel, not far from a 6-1/2-month high of 56.91dollars set on Friday.

The Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries ( OPEC ), Russia and several other producers have cut production by about 1.8 million barrels per day (bpd) since the start of 2017, helping lift oil prices by high numbers n the past three months.

Kuwaiti Oil Minister Essam al- Marzouq, who chaired Friday’s meeting of the Joint Ministerial Monitoring Committee, said output curbs were helping cut global crude inventories to their five-year average, OPEC’s stated target.

The dollar index was up 0.2 per cent against a basket of currencies.

The euro slipped after Germany’s election showed surging support for a far-right party that left Chancellor Angela Merkel scrambling to form a governing coalition.

Russia’s energy minister said no decision on extending output curbs beyond the end of March was expected before January, although other ministers suggested such a decision could be taken before the end of this year.

Iran expects to maintain overall  crude and condensate exports at around 2.6 million bpd for the rest of 2017, a senior official in the nation’s state oil company said.

Meanwhile, the UAE’s energy minister said its compliance to supply cuts was 100 per cent.

Nigeria is pumping below its agreed output cap, its oil minister said.

“Oil is relatively underpriced compared with other markets, but any steep rise would be offset by rising shale oil production,” said Tomomichi Akuta, senior economist at Mitsubishi UFJ Research and Consulting in Tokyo.

Markets were also eyeing developments in North Korea. U.S. Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin on Sunday said President Donald Trump wants to avoid nuclear war with North Korea and “will do everything we can” to avoid conflict.

Macron to address terrorism, climate at UN

French President Emmanuel Macron will give his first address to the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, with terrorism and climate change as his top priorities.

Elysee officials were tight-lipped about the likely contents of Macron’s speech ahead of his travel.

But his agenda included a security-focused meeting on Monday evening with fellow heads of state from the Sahel region of West Africa, where French troops are supporting local forces against militants.

Macron and British Prime Minister Theresa May, as well as Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni would host a meeting on preventing terrorist use of the internet.

The French president, who took office in May, would also open a summit on a French-backed proposal for global pact on environment, aimed at creating binding international code of environmental law.

French officials say Macron will also discuss the Syrian conflict with leaders of the other four permanent members of the UN Security Council – Britain, China, Russia and the U.S.

  • Dalung lauds Super Eagles for Cameroon’s 4-0 defeat

Dalung lauds Super Eagles for Cameroon’s 4-0 defeat

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung, has applauded the Super Eagles for their Friday’s massive 4-0 triumph over visiting Indomitable Lions of Cameroon in a 2018 World Cup qualifier in Uyo.

The team will receive N20 million for the four goals scored following the Federal Government’s promise to reward every strike with N5 million during a pep talk before the game.

Dalung thanked the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the team for not letting Nigerians down knowing the importance of qualifying for the World Cup in Russia next year.

“The NFF has been on its toes to ensure that the Super Eagles qualify for the next World Cup.

“You worked very hard for this victory and Nigerians are proud of you for always raising the flag when it matters most.

“We know the consequences of not being at the World Cup in Russia in 2018,’’ the minister said in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media, Nneka Ikem-Anibeze.

“We determine the pulse of African sports and set the tune and agenda for Africa in global sports, so, it is very key and critical to us.

“Moreover, the absence of Nigeria at any international competition always denies the world of the pattern, style and tradition of the Nigerian variety of football.

“So, we will be going to Russia with another different pattern and style of football.’’

The minister called on football stakeholders and Nigerians to continue to support the players with their prayers and objective criticisms.

“The Federal Government will continue to support our players because they have been making so many sacrifices for the country.

“There is nothing we can do to compensate them for what they have done except to continue to appreciate and celebrate them in this critical journey to Russia,’’ the statement said.

Nigeria now top Group B with 9 points and will face Cameroon again on Monday at the Stade Omnispirts Ahmadu Ahidjo in Yaoundé at 6 p.m.

  • U.S. gives Russia 48 hours to close three missions

U.S. gives Russia 48 hours to close three missions

In a retaliatory move, the U.S. has  given Russia 48 hours to close three of its missions in San Francisco, Washington  D.C. and New York.

The spokesperson of the U.S. Department of  State, Heather Nauert, said in a statement on   Thursday that  the move was to achieve parity in diplomatic missions.

Moscow had asked Washington to reduce its missions officials in Russia in  retaliation for  the seizure of property belonging to Russians and expulsion of dozens of Russian nationals by President Barack Obama.

Obama took the decision on the eve of the end of his tenure in January in retaliation against Russia’s alleged meddling in the Nov. 8, 2016 U.S. presidential election.

“The United States has fully implemented the decision by the Government of the Russian Federation to reduce the size of our mission in Russia.

“We believe this action was unwarranted and detrimental to the overall relationship between our countries.

“In the spirit of parity invoked by the Russians, we are requiring the Russian Government to close its Consulate General in San Francisco, a chancery annex in Washington  D.C.  and a consular annex in New York City.

“ These closures will need to be accomplished by Sept.  2. With this action,  both countries will remain with three consulates each.

“While there will continue to be a disparity in the number of diplomatic and consular annexes, we have chosen to allow the Russian Government to maintain some of its annexes in an effort to arrest the downward spiral in our relationship,’’ the department said.

The U.S. said it hoped that having moved toward the Russian Federation’s desire for parity, it could avoid further retaliatory actions by both sides and move forward to achieve the stated goal of  both of the two countries’  presidents.

The department noted that the goal of both President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin was  improved relations between the two  countries and increased cooperation on areas of mutual concern.

“The United States is prepared to take further action as necessary and as warranted,” the department  added.

It  said Secretary of State Rex Tillerson phoned his Russian counterpart,  Sergey Lavrov,  “to inform him that we had met their required reduction in size by their deadlines.’’

“And he also informed him of our plans to close the facilities in question.

“There was also a meeting between our acting Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs John Heffern, who conveyed the decisions and our response to the Russian Deputy Chief of Mission Dmitry Zhirnov,” it added.  (NAN)

  • Russia’s theatre director Serebrennikov detained for fraud

Russia’s theatre director Serebrennikov detained for fraud

Russian theatre director, Kirill Serebrennikov, who was detained and accused of embezzling state funds, was placed under house arrest on Wednesday over the fraud case.

His supporters said it was part of a government crackdown on artistic freedoms.

A Moscow court which ruled in the case ignored character witness statements in his favour from high-profile figures in the art world and an offer from one to pay any amount of bail.

The court ruled that Serebrennikov should be placed under house arrest till Oct. 19 ahead of his trial on embezzlement charges.

The director, who has used his work to poke fun at the authorities, lampooning what he sees as the pernicious role of the church and state in Russian society, told the court he was innocent.

His supporters outside, including some of the country’s most famous actors, chanted his name and demanded that he be freed.

“All the accusations made against me are absurd.

    “I’ve been working honestly.

“I need to finish filming a movie and put shows on,” Serebrennikov, 47, said from inside a metal cage in the courtroom.

However, the court rejected his appeal to be freed on bail and granted a request from state prosecutors to place him under house arrest.

Investigators say Serebrennikov led a criminal group and embezzled at least 68 million rubles (1.15 million dollars) in state funds earmarked for an art project.

Serebrennikov, art director at Moscow’s avant-garde Gogol Center theatre, faces up to 10 years in jail if found guilty.

He said the funds were used to stage bona fide productions.

His case has raised an outcry among the liberal cultural elite who say they fear the director is being persecuted for his work.

In July, the Bolshoi theatre postponed the world premiere of Nureyev, an edgy ballet about the famous Russian dancer directed by Serebrennikov.

The theatre said the production was not ready.

However, the state-run TASS news agency cited a source close to the culture ministry as saying the production was postponed over concerns it violated a law designed to prevent the promotion of homosexuality to minors.

“What the authorities are doing with him is a disgrace.

“A great director of modern times is being treated like a terrorist,” Pavel Kaplevich, a theatre producer, said after the ruling in Serebrennikov’s case.

Writer and Director Viktor Shenderovich said he thought the case was meant to be a warning to others, saying “this is a clear signal before the elections,” Shenderovich told Russian broadcaster TV Rain. ‘’

“(The signal is that) no global profile or elite will save you from the interests of a repressive state if it decides that it is in its interests to put you on the ground face down.”

Russia is to vote in a presidential election in March 2018, with incumbent Vladimir Putin expected to run.

Serebrennikov’s supporters believe the authorities, in preparation for the vote, want to cow the liberal arts world into suppressing political criticism.

Serebrennikov was working on a film about a Soviet rock star when detained.

The conditions of his house arrest mean he will only be allowed to communicate with close relatives and his lawyers, and cannot visit his place of work without investigators’ permission.

A spokesman for the foreign ministry of France, where his productions have been presented, said Paris was concerned about his detention and hoped the case would be handled swiftly in line with the law.

Serebrennikov’s legal team said they would appeal.
