  • …agencies probe alleged sabotage

Following killing of more than 86 people in Plateau State, there were indications that the Nigeria Police Force and security agencies were suspecting alleged sabotage by some disgruntled elements.

Some clues were also said to have pointed to subterranean motives, including likely political tone,  beyond the herdsmen factor.

It was also learnt that the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has asked his deputy, DIG Joshack Habilla, to stay put in the state to get to the root of the killings.

According to a top security source, who spoke in confidence, President Muhammadu Buhari had ordered a “comprehensive probe of the killings” to avert a reoccurrence in any part of the country.

The source, who spoke in confidence, said: “Some of the clues obtained by the Police and security agencies have traces of suspected sabotage by some elements. We have a mandate from the President to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the killings.

“So far, apart from the killings in some of the affected villages, some victims included travellers and innocent ones who were caught in the crossfire.

“We are not only looking at the alleged invasion of the villages by herdsmen, we want to probe other factors which may cover likely political and religious angles.

“The security profile of Plateau State in the last three years did not give hints of likely breaches, a development which has fuelled suspicion of sabotage. There had been relative peace in the state.

“We will do our best to unmask the perpetrators of the dastardly killings.”

Meanwhile, the Human Rights Watch (HRW) has called for thorough investigations and fair trial of those responsible for the violence.

A statement by Africa Director of HRW, Mausi Segun, said:  “The carnage in Plateau State is a clear indication that the decades-long conflict has reached new levels of brutality. The frequency of these deadly attacks demonstrates the government’s failure to ensure safety and security in the region.

“Nigerian authorities need to do more than debunk self-help calls if they want people to trust and cooperate with them.

“Even-handed, prompt, and thorough investigations, followed by fair trials of those responsible for the violence, are effective ways to unequivocally send this message.”

“Plateau is one of the states in Nigeria’s North Central region worst hit by decades of communal conflict between predominantly Christian farming communities and mostly Muslim cattle herdsmen.

“Local groups report that between January and March 2018, 1,078 people died in the violence in Plateau, Benue, Kaduna, Taraba, Nasarawa, Adamawa, Kwara, and Kogi states.

“In Benue State alone, 102,000 children, 60 per cent of the 169, 922 people displaced by the conflict, have been forced out of school. Although the conflict is increasingly described in religious terms, competing claims to land and other resources are at its core.

“In a 2013 report, Human Rights Watch found that the failure of authorities to bring those responsible to justice is one of the major drivers of the cycles of communal violence in Kaduna and Plateau states.

“ In recent months, there have been no public reports on investigation by the police into the violence in the Middle Belt. Just five people in Adamawa State have been tried and sentenced for killings in the region since 2017.

“Community leaders say that the inadequate deployment of security forces to protect lives and property has led them to advocate self-help defensive efforts, as well as retaliatory attacks against those responsible for, or perceived as being responsible for, previous attacks.

“ In May, a former Defence Minister, Gen. Theophilus Danjuma, called on people in his home state of Taraba to stop depending on government security forces which he said were not neutral, for protection, and instead to defend themselves against attackers.”

  • Bamidele: Oni, others won’t sabotage APC’s victory

The Director General of the Kayode Fayemi Campaign Organisation, Hon. Opeyemi Bamidele, has said the All Progressives Congress (APC) entertains no fear about the victory of its candidate in the July 14 governorship poll, Dr. Kayode Fayemi.

Bamidele said he has implicit confidence in the leadership of the party in Ekiti State, including former Governor Segun Oni and his group working for Fayemi to make the victory a resounding and collective one.

The Director General made the remarks yesterday in a statement from his Media Aide, Ahmed Salami in Ado Ekiti.

Recently, Oni was linked to a litigation purportedly filed in Abuja seeking the nullification of Fayemi’s victory in the party’s primary on account of his failure to resign as a minister in line with the party’s constitution and guidelines.

Commenting on the event that has been causing ripples in the APC, Bamidele said he has no reason to doubt Oni and his commitment to Fayemi’s victory in this election.

Bamidele said: “We are not ruling out the possibility of people having some ill-feelings about certain issues in our party, but that should not degenerate to the level where people can act as fifth columnists in their own party.”

  • $16bn Egina probe: Senate warns against sabotage

The Senate has asked foreign firms investing in Nigeria to desist from any activities that will shortchange the country and its people in their investment drive.

Chairman, Senate Committee on Local Content Senator Solomon Adeola (Lagos West) gave the advice  at the weekend when Managing Director of SAIPEM Contracting Nigeria Limited Mr. Guido D’ Aloisio appeared before the investigative committee with  the firm’s legal counsel, Chief Henry Ajumogobia (SAN).

A statement by the Media Adviser to Adeola, Chief Kayode Odunaro in Abuja said the senator spoke at the ongoing Senate investigation into the cost variations and local content elements of the $16 Billion Egina Deep-sea Oil production.

It quoted Adeola to have said: “No individual or corporate body should stampede us as a country to do what is not obtainable in their country or in accordance to international best practices.”

Adeola was also said to have added that it was because investment in the country was profitable that foreign investors make huge investment as in the case of Egina project.

The statement said SAIPEM Contracting Nigeria Limited MD appeared before the committee with the firm’s legal counsel to explained that he was in the best position with the” Power of Attorney” to provide answers to the Senate Committee on behalf of the managing directors of three foreign companies – SAIPEM SA, SAIPEM Portugal and SAIPEM BV – all part of a consortium that got $2.9 billion – varied to $3.2 billion – contract of the Egina $16 billion project.

It explained that Senate had earlier given an ultimatum for the managing directors to appear before its investigative committee in person.

The statement added that on D’Aloisio explanation that he was in the best position to provide all evidences requested by the committee as the contract was signed by proxy and the foreign MDs may not know some details, Adeola said that the “Power of Attorney” document be submitted.

It said that Adeola insisted that “all documents relating to the foreign firms aspects of the contract, including scope of work, approved variations, dollar-naira differentials in contracts as well as the shares of each of the companies in the consortium should be submitted to the committee.

The senator said: “While we are not accusing anyone of shady deals and nobody is on trial, we insist that all relevant documents be made available to the committee so that we can present a fair and comprehensive report to the Senate for it to take decision to protect Nigeria’s interest and Nigerians. As it is, we have uncovered huge variations running up to a billion dollars as well as serial contraventions of the Nigeria Local Content Law 2010.”

Calling on the media not to draw any conclusion of wrongdoings in their coverage of the committee’s proceedings as complained by the legal counsel of SAPIEM, Ajumogobia (SAN), Adeola noted that the reportage by the media must have been done in line of their duty to protect the interest of Nigeria.

Chairman of the committee was also said to have directed the managing director of Samsung Heavy Industry (SHI) Mr. EJ Shin to provide evidence to justify his claims of taking away Nigeria jobs abroad from a Nigerian company, EWT Nigeria Limited, on the basis of late delivery and quality, a claim denied by the Nigerian firm present at the hearing.

Adeola said an interim report of the findings of the committee so far will be submitted to Senate in plenary in about two weeks’ time.

  • Don’t sabotage Christmas, Uzodimma warns fuel dealers

Don’t sabotage Christmas, Uzodimma warns fuel dealers

The Chairman of Senate Committee on Customs, Excise & Tariff, Senator Hope Uzodimma, yesterday warned fuel dealers and tank farm owners against sabotaging the Christmas celebration.

He asked them to shun the temptation of playing politics with the distribution of petroleum products, which he said is at the roots of the current scarcity of fuel across the country.

Uzodimma, who is also the Chairman of the Southern Senators Forum (SSF), said in a statement in Abuja that from statistics available to his committee, “there is enough quantity of petroleum products imported into the country which can last till the first quarter of next year.”

He blamed the scarcity on hoarding.

He said the timing of the development smacks of sabotage and appealed to dealers and tank farm owners to resist being used to politicise the fate of Nigerians.

He said: “Christians all over the world and indeed Nigeria hold the Christmas period dear to their heart consistent with their faith, and nobody or group of persons should be seen to be sabotaging this all important feast.”

Uzodimma urged the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to carry out thorough investigation into the scarcity with a view to sanctioning erring dealers.

According to him, since the increase in pump price of fuel in the last two years, there has been steady supply of petrol in the filling stations.

He wondered why scarcity is coming now that Christmas is around the corner “if not for political reasons and deliberate efforts to sabotage the Federal Government.”

  • Fuel scarcity, an act of cruelty and sabotage, says NLC

Fuel scarcity, an act of cruelty and sabotage, says NLC

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has described as an act of cruelty and sabotage the current fuel scarcity in the country.

NLC President, Comrade Aruba Wabba said in a statement in Abuja that the congress also consider the  scarcity as an insult to the collective pride of all good Nigerians as we ought not to be operating at this philistine and pristine level.

In the statement entitled “Fuel scarcity: No reason is good enough”, the NLC said whatever it takes, the government must take immediate steps to fix this problem within the next few days, adding that even though several reasons have been adduced for the scarcity, no excuse is good enough.

The statement reads: “The Nigeria Labour Congress condemns the prevailing scarcity of petroleum products across the country leading to avoidable pain and suffering.

“Diverse reasons have been given for this scarcity but no reason is good enough for the present wave of suffering inflicted on the citizenry via scarcity of petroleum products. We at the Nigeria Labour Congress consider this scarcity as an act of cruelty and sabotage from which a few privileged are benefitting.

“The timing of this artificial scarcity is not lost on us as it is intended to maximise gain and profit since it is a well-known fact that the Christmas season witnesses the biggest movement of people, goods and services.

“We also consider this scarcity as an insult to the collective pride of all good Nigerians as we ought not to be operating at this philistine and pristine level. More than ever before, we should get right the business of petroleum products, from the upstream to downstream.

“We have made the point without number that we have no business importing petroleum products after 60 years of discovering in commercial quantity, crude oil in our shores.

“Accordingly, we strongly urge government to fix this problem within the next few days, whatever it takes.”

  • Military suspects sabotage in attack on convoy

Worried by the high casualty figures in Tuesday’s ambush of an oil exploration team, intelligence service has started probing call logs in Magumeri axis.

It was suspected that some moles in the convoy of the NNPC team might have sold out to Boko Haram.

The convoy comprised NNPC officials, University of Maiduguri officials, soldiers and Civilian JTF members.

The death toll has forced the military to go back to the drawing board on how to avert a reoccurrence.

According to PRNigeria, a military covert media outreach, the probe will determine whether there were moles in the convoy or if there was connivance by those living along the routes.

The ongoing investigation will also ascertain if there were collaborators in some of the villages in the affected axis.

A top security source said “The recent deadly Boko Haram attacks which left in its trail  loss of lives, property and abductions has necessitated a joint security intelligence service in examining calls and messages within the Yesu District in Magumeri axis of Borno State.

“The development has become necessary as moles could be suspected among those in the convoy that include different interest groups to perpetuate their heinous activities.

The source also revealed that the security services in the course of their assignment will determine whether there is connivance and collaborators by those living along the routes  since the same NNPC explorers have always travelled regularly to the exploration sites on the same route.

“It is so baffling the shocking ambush by the terrorists when our gallant troops have always provided adequate security cover for the same convoy regularly on that same route and similar ones for months without problems!

“There are concerns that the planned military onslaught recently announced by the Chief of Army staff(COAS) with a deadline to capture dead or alive notorious position leaders of the deadly sect may be suspended or slowed down because of the capture of some staff of University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) and other abductees being moved to the suspected sites.”

  • ‘Fuel supply sabotage’: NUPENG wing faults DSS allegation on Ubah

The Petroleum Tanker Drivers’ (PTD) wing of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) yesterday faulted the Department of State Security Services (DSS) over allegation of collaboration with the Managing Director of Capital Oil and Gas Limited, Ifeanyi Ubah, to disrupt distribution of petroleum products.

It said no individual or institution can be allowed to use tanker drivers to cause any economic sabotage.

The union, which made the clarifications in a statement by its national chairman, Otunba Salmon Oladiti, dismissed the allegation as ”baseless, unfounded  and totally untrue”.

The DSS linked Ubah’s arrest to alleged plans to incite members of the PTD, a critical player in the downstream sub-sector of the petroleum Industry, to refuse/stop the lifting of products.

But the tanker drivers, through their chairman, said there was no way its members could be used for economic sabotage.

Oladiti said the union has no relationship with the firm’s chief, ‘’ beyond the precinct of promoting, projecting and protecting the security of jobs and welfare of our members”.

The statement said: “We read from an online publication the arrest of Ifeanyi Ubah for stealing and diversion of petroleum products worth N11 billion and further allegation of inciting Petroleum Tanker Drivers to cause economic sabotage.

‘’The leadership of the Petroleum Tanker Drivers wishes to categorically deny the allegation of Ifeanyi Ubah or any other individual, inciting the tanker drivers to cause any economic sabotage.  The allegation is baseless, unfounded and totally untrue.

‘’Our responsibility as a trade union is solely to promote, project and protect the job security and welfare of workers, most especially the petroleum tanker drivers in Nigeria.

‘’We have no further relationship with any capitalist/ employer beyond the precinct of promoting, projecting and protecting the security of jobs and welfare of our members.’’

The union further restated its commitment to the war against corruption by the federal government and its determination to sustain what it called “a good brand of integrity and excellent service to the nation”.

‘’We unequivocally support the ongoing war against corruption by the current government and any capitalist/employer found culpable of stealing, diversion or embezzlement of government funds should be appropriately dealt with in accordance with the law.

‘’The PTDs’ branch of NUPENG has over the years built a good brand of integrity and excellent service to the nation and we will not allow anyone or institution, no matter how highly placed to bring this beautiful brand our forebears toiled to build into disrepute.’’

  • Sabotage responsible for Heartland’s relegation, says Ozuruigbo

Sabotage responsible for Heartland’s relegation, says Ozuruigbo

Heartland FC supervisor, Ugonna Ozuruigbo has asserted that plans are underway to ensure that the Naze Millionaires make a return to the Nigeria Professional Football League and that the internal strife in the Owerri side’s management was the sole reason the club suffered its first relegation.

He said that the recent war of words in the media on who should take responsibility for the demotion of the club will only retrogress the club the more from achieving the desire to make a quick return to the topflight.

“I want to state categorically that Heartland have the crop of players with which to ensure that the club does not go down on relegation but we have some people working in the club that worked against the interest of the team,” Ozuruigbo told Goal.

“A particular official of the club resigned and few days after his resignation marshalled the movement of the club’s four top players to FC IfeanyiUbah. He came back again and the result was our relegation at the end of last season.

“We won’t get anywhere if we continue to dwell on the past. We have started moves towards ensuring that Heartland management is rid of all bad influences and foremost was to dissolve  the club’s management and they have the option of re-applying if they so desired.

“We have picked out what was responsible for Heartland’s exit from the premier league and work is being done to ensure that we are back at the first time of asking.”

Heartland finished last season’s campaign 18th on the log with 43 points from 36 matches and they alongside Ikorodu United, Warri Woves and Giwa FC will play in the Nigeria National League  next season.

  • ‘Faking of seeds act of sabotage’

The National Agricultural Seeds Council (NASC) has warned distributors of fake seeds of severe penalties. The council said it was taking steps to  protect farmers against such seeds which cause crop losses.

Its Director-General, Dr. Olusegun Ojo, said violators of the Nigerian Seed Act No. 72 of 1992, now being amended by the National Assembly, would not go free. Ojo, who spoke during  enlightenment programmes in Kano, Jigawa and Kebbi states, described adulteration of seeds as an act of sabotage.

He said adulteration of seeds would not be tolerated, as agriculture is becoming the economic base of Nigeria. Seed, Ojo said, is the backbone of the sector.

He said the council would regulate the quality of seeds  such that  black-marketing of seeds would be checked, as this is having a negative impact on farmers.

To ensure that only quality seeds of proven cultivars get to farmers during the  wet season, NASC embarked on nationwide  enlightenment campaigns in Kano, Jigawa and Kebbi states.

The campaigns were meant to educate the public on the activities of the unscrupulous seed merchants in the Northwest and to discourage such inappropriate trade tactics. The exercise, which lasted for four days, was spearheaded by Director-General, NASC in company of his senior officials, a team of plant breeders from the Institute for Agricultural Research & Training (IAR&T) Ibadan, Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR/ABU), Zaria and National Cereals Research Institute (NCRI), Badeggi.

Through the training, the trainee agrodealers were educated and taught on criteria to consider before buying improved seeds from the seed companies. They were also taken through awareness creation on how to differentiate quality seeds from adulterated and fake seeds.

Places visited were Hadejia in Jigawa State, Dan Hassan in Kano State and Jega in Kebbi State at pre-control plots sites established to authenticate, assess, evaluate and monitor quality attributes of all notified and traded crop seed varieties produced by National Agricultural Research Institutions (NARIS) seed companies, and Community Based Organisations (CBOs) for marketing.
