Sammie Okposo nominated for SABC Crown Gospel Awards

NIGERIAN gospel artiste, Sammie Okposo, has been nominated in this year’s Best of Africa category at the SABC Crown Music Awards. Okposo is the only Nigerian artiste nominated for the awards and in same category with four other African gospel artistes, including Frank Chimpazi, Shongwe & Khuphuka, Saved Group and Seapour N.

The awards, now in its seventh year, will be held at ICC Arena, Durban on November 23. Over the years, it has been described as the most prestigious and credible gospel music awards out of Africa. Sammie said the nomination came as shock because he was not expecting it.

“Firstly, all thanks to God for His grace and excellent spirit. He is the only one who blesses a man and lifts him. I’m grateful for the nomination. But for me, it means more hard work. Many years after I won the Kora Awards Best Gospel Artiste in Africa, my works are still much in demand and here is another nomination as the Best of Africa Gospel Artiste. It’s an honour,” the Globacom ambassador stated.

The award’s founder and executive producer, Zanele Mbokazi, said: “Seven is a number of perfection. We thank God, our partners and the Gospel industry at large for helping us to reach this milestone.”

The organisers also announced that Sammie Okposo would be performing at the event scheduled for November 23, at Durban ICC Arena in South Africa.

SAMMIE OKPOSO launches NGO, drops new single

FRONTLINE gospel artiste and Globacom ambassador, Sammie Okposo, has launched a new non-governmental organisation known as Follow The Leader Organisation (FTLO).

He said the recent events in Nigeria provide ample proof that Nigerians generally do not know what makes a good leader, thereby basing their followership on ignorant populist sentiments.

According to him, it is important to create a distinct platform or movement that is a vanguard of enlightenment and education for the people to help them identify the traits that make a good leader.

“Because of the high complexities of today’s societies, our world, more than ever before, needs a composite of noble and worthy qualities and values in the persons who are entrusted with leadership. Ironically, leaders with such a composite of great values are very few around the world. And sadly, the few that exist are more often than not unrecognized by a majority of the people needing the leadership.

FTLO, according to him, is established upon four cardinal values: peace, unity, love and life. The message will be passed across to Nigerians via popular vehicle, which include music, comedy, Nollywood, football, fashion and seminars.

Meanwhile, the multiple award-winning singer has released a new single titled Let Peace Reign.

He expressed the desire that people will listen to the song and share the message of peace, even in the midst of the pervading insecurity in the land.

    COSON anticipates Okposo’s return

CHINEDU Chukwuji, General Manager of Copyright Society of Nigeria, has said that Gospel singer, Sammie Okposo, will return to the COSON fold.

According to Chukwuji, Sammie has not availed himself the opportunity of visiting the COSON office and is clearly unfamiliar with the quality of personnel, the technology at COSON.

Reacting to the recent Internet report that Sammie Okposo has withdrawn his membership of COSON, Chukwuji said that COSON had not received any resignation letter from Okposo.

“COSON has thousands of members and hundreds of thousands of affiliates. We do not join issues with our members on the pages of newspapers and certainly not with Sammie Okposo, whom I consider a personal friend. Since Sammie has made his statement public. We have a duty to clear any misconceptions about COSON before they become accepted as facts.

“I believe he is a very close friend of the chairman. I have asked our chairman if Sammie ever complained to him and his answer was negative. Sammie never asked me for any information that was not provided to him. I cannot remember seeing Sammie at any COSON’s meeting and he has not been to the COSON office to ask any question,” Chukwuji said.

Sammie Okposo shines with new single

ABOUT a few weeks after winning the Best Gospel Artiste at NEA Awards in New York, Sammie Okposo has gone ahead to release the first single off his next album. He titled the new single Who Tell You Say?

At first listen and if a careful attention is not paid to the lyrics, one might not believe it’s a gospel song. Who Tell You Say? has all the trappings of a high-rated music; very groovy and different from the norm.

While speaking on his latest release, Okposo said his plan is to constantly redefine gospel music and put more life into the music. ‘It’s high time we took our message to the clubs and other places that the word of God is not preached. Gospel music should be able to make playlists of different music stations and appeal to many souls. It might be very groovy but the message is powerful enough to bring about change in their lives. Gospel music should not be made for the church only because everything we need is in the church. The time is now for gospel music to take its rightful place in the Nigerian music industry.’

Speaking further, the singer said he will be dropping two of such singles before the release of his next album temporarily scheduled for April 2014.

Sammie Okposo takes Praise Party Live to America

AWARDS winning singer and Globacom Ambassador, Sammie Okposo will be rocking United State of America this summer with some of his colleagues from Nigeria. The singer is exporting his concert having held a successful Lagos edition last Easter.

Tagged Sammie Okposo Praise Party Live, the concert will kick-off on August 13 in New York, Atlanta and Maryland. On why he’s taking the show to America, Okposo said it’s becoming imperative to keep promoting the brand all over the world. “Firstly, it’s all about reaching out and evangelising the word via gospel music. Secondly, it’s about promoting my music beyond the shores of Africa to reach out to my already existing fans and make new ones thereby creating a platform where they will be treated to the best of Sammie Okposo and same for other Nigerian artistes on the bill. Thirdly, it’s about creating an environment where Nigerian gospel artistes can interact and synergise with their counterparts from America with the possibilities of duets, publishing and marketing opportunities”.
