    Sanwo-Olu decries unhygienic practices

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu yesterday berated residents for abusing the environment and vandalism of public infrastructure, especially those guarding against flooding.

He spoke at a sensitisation programme to herald the reintroduction of the monthly environmental sanitation.

The programme, held at the Campos Mini Stadium, Lagos Island, is the first of others to come, according to the governor.

It also coincided with the 2024 Tree Planting Day, with the theme: ‘Nurture our Future’.

The governor expressed disappointment that public infrastructure and facilities, which should safeguard the environment, are being vandalised, especially manholes that should drain water off the roads, thereby preventing flooding, have been removed from some roads on the Island.

He warned that henceforth, whoever is caught will face the wrath of the law.

He said: “Cleanliness is next to Godliness. We cannot watch our environment debased. Our hospitals are full due to our unhygienic environment caused by the carefree attitude of residents.

“We monitored the environment earlier in the day and saw indiscriminate dumping of refuse in canals, manholes already removed from roads; this environmental nuisance is unacceptable. It’s a shame that our people engage in vandalising public infrastructure despite government’s efforts and huge funding. This kind of people do not deserve to be among us.

“The Ministry of the Environment will set up units that will address the situation, while environmental offenders will face the full weight of the law when caught.

“The era of uncleanliness is over in Lagos, that’s why we are kicking off this sensitisation/advocacy campaign today from Lagos Island. This must start from homes, schools, markets, offices. Government cannot do it alone, we have to work together.

“It is our goal to further educate residents on the need to take ownership of their environment and ensure they continuously clean their surroundings, dispose waste responsibly while acknowledging that we must sustain this as our own contribution towards maintaining a sustainable environment.

“From next Saturday, we will begin sensitisation programmes where we will be on the road cleaning and desilting water channels weekly. After an exhaustive sensitisation, enlightenment and advocacy, we will then make it a law to be done monthly to ensure we improve the cleanliness of our environment of a state we are proud of.”

Governor Sanwo-Olu said about 200,000 waste bins have been procured for refuse management and will be distributed to communities soon, while LAWMA will share waste bags of different colours and sizes across the metropolis to enhance proper waste disposal that will also complement measures in preventing diseases.

Lagos state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has berated residents for abusing the environment and vandalising public infrastructure, especially those guarding against flooding.

Sanwo-Olu spoke at a sensitization programme on Sunday, July 14, to herald the reintroduction of the monthly environmental sanitation. The programme, held at the Campos Mini Stadium, Lagos Island, is the first of others to come, according to the governor.

According to him, the sensitisation will be the start of conversations to make people see and understand why the monthly sanitation must be re-introduced.

“This will start the conversation on how and why we should re-introduce the monthly sanitation exercise. We will push round the state on our plans to begin a collective process of environmental cleanliness,” he added.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources Tokunbo Wahab described the sensitization as ‘a bold step of the Sanwo-Olu administration towards improving the general well-being of the citizenry as well as bequeathing a safe, clean, flood free and sustainable environment to the people’.

According to him, government was considering re-introducing the exercise due to the poor sanitation habits of residents. He urged Community Development Associations (CDAs), Community Development Committees (CDCs), market operators, among others, to prioritise environmental sanitation.

He added: “The monthly environmental sanitation was a culture in Lagos some years back to promote a clean and healthy environment, encourage community participation in waste management and reduce the risk of disease outbreaks.

“I will like to say that as the government embarks on this cleaning exercise, all residents are encouraged to clean their homes, surroundings, drainages in front of their houses and streets while LAWMA officials would always be on ground to collect well bagged waste and dispose them properly.

“I want you to always bear in mind that undertaking the sanitation of our environment provides the ground for people to become hygienic to safeguard their health.

“All MDAs under the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources would rejig every aspect of their activities and synergise to continually deliver a clean and healthy environment to the people. We believe this initiative will ensure that flooding is reduced to the barest minimum for the good of the people.”

During the tree planting at the State House in Marina, Governor Sanwo-Olu said the government will be planting about 20,000 trees as part of efforts to beat climate change and attain the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

He said: “Tree planting is important to save the earth and curb climate change. And so this annual ritual is a demonstration of our administration’s commitment to securing our environment and combating climate change.

“We will continue this initiative all year round so we can achieve that target fast. We will particularly be planting every month so we can spread the message to the larger community. We will plant about 20,000 trees in the next 12 months to boost our efforts at fighting climate change.”

General Manager of the Lagos State Parks and Garden (LASPARK) Mrs. Adetoun Popoola reiterated the agency’s readiness to support the governor’s dream of planting more trees in the next 12 months.

She said: “This year’s theme ‘Nurture our Future’, aligns with the global focus on ‘Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience’ as highlighted on World Environment Day.

“It is another reminder for us all on the vital role that trees play in maintaining ecological balance. Trees are nature’s most powerful tool in combating climate change, preventing soil erosion, and improving air quality. They are essential in our fight against desertification and in enhancing our resilience to drought.

“The theme is therefore a call to action. It is a reminder that the decisions we make today will shape the world we leave for future generations. To this end, the agency will be establishing six ‘Eco-Friendly Playgrounds’ in public primary schools across the state. We will also be distributing free tree seedlings to interested persons to plant in their communities.

“By planting trees, we are investing in the health and well-being of our planet and our communities. Each tree planted today is a step towards a greener, more sustainable Lagos.”

Commissioner for Commerce, Cooperative, Trade and Investment, Mrs. Folashade Ambrose-Medebem said this edition is a fulfilment of Governor Sanwo-Olu’s promise at the last edition to dedicate the upcoming ones to unpacking the challenges that organisations doing business in Lagos encounter with sovereign institutions of the federal government.

“Part of the strategic intents of this edition is to see how issues around multiple taxation, levies, infrastructure challenges, and regulatory burdens can be transparently discussed,” she noted.

Mrs. Ambrose-Medebem also said the assembly provides a platform to present and address challenges relating to doing business in Lagos, with clear directives often given to the responsible MDAs for their resolution. This approach, she noted, has made the assembly a vital tool for enhancing cooperation and problem-solving between the government and the business community.

She added: “As a responsive and responsible government, the Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration recognises that ease of doing business is key to economic growth and development, and we are working assiduously towards improving this daily, through the implementation of various forms of reforms.

Sanwo-Olu: Cooperatives vital to ending poverty, social inequality

Lagos state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has described cooperative societies as having the potential to achieve the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of reducing poverty, promoting decent work, fostering innovation, and enhancing social justice.

According to him, Cooperatives have the power to drive transformative change, and so will always be relevant as a medium for bringing the government’s development programme closer to the larger society.

Sanwo-Olu spoke at the grand finale of the 30th International Day of Cooperatives, and the 102nd International Cooperative Day to be celebrated by the Cooperative Movement. The theme for the 2024 celebration is ‘Cooperatives: Building a Better Future for All’.

According to the governor, the theme highlights the potential of the Cooperative Movement to drive social, economic, and environmental progress. “By pooling resources and fostering collaboration among members, Cooperatives can amplify individual efforts, mitigate risks, and generate collective benefits for all stakeholders,” he noted.

The governor said his administration is interested and will advocate for partnerships as a means of accelerated sustainable development because of its ability to mobilise people and financial resources, both of which are central to any development.

The governor’s address, read by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade and Investment, Olugbemiga Aina, reads: “Cooperative Societies will always be relevant as a medium for bringing government’s development programme closer to the larger society. This is crucial when we understand that government alone cannot provide all that is required to address the challenges associated with sustainable development. By strengthening the Cooperative Movement through multi-stakeholder partnerships, our administration can facilitate additional financial resources and expertise to empower a greater number of people and boost development.

“Cooperative Societies are major stakeholders in Lagos State and their services are at the core of our administration’s focus, as highlighted in our T.H.E.M.E.S+ Development Agenda, which focuses on transforming our dear State into a modern economic powerhouse. The 4th Pillar of the Agenda particularly strives to Make Lagos A 21st Century Economy. We firmly believe that the Cooperative Movement will play a vital role in achieving this vision.

“We are actively working to create an enabling environment for Cooperatives to thrive. We understand that Cooperatives can be a strong driver of poverty alleviation, job creation, economic growth, and community empowerment. With Cooperatives as our partners, we aim to stimulate investments, harness local talents, and develop a more inclusive and sustainable economy.”

The governor also admonished leaders of cooperatives to ‘make integrity, accountability, dedication, and compassion their watchwords. You are holding your position in trust for members, and I encourage you to discharge the responsibilities of your office with Godly fear.

Commissioner for the Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade & Investment Mrs. Folashade Ambrose-Medebem, represented by the Director of Cooperative Services, Mrs. Zulikha Ibraheem, noted that the International Cooperative Day is celebrated annually to increase awareness of Cooperatives, strengthen and extend partnerships between the International Cooperative Movement, governments and other stakeholders. ‘The Day also recognises and re-affirms the role of Cooperatives in socio-economic and cultural development, as well as the realisation of social policy development objectives’.

“Thus, the theme aligns with the objectives of the upcoming United Nations Summit of the Future themed ‘Multilateral Solutions for a Better Tomorrow’.

“With over 2.6 million cooperatives worldwide, employing more than 280 million people, cooperatives play a crucial role in promoting sustainable development,” the commissioner noted.

She added: “Without doubt, the Cooperative identity, values, and principles set a strong system for achieving the SDGs and, through the 2024 celebration, cooperatives will showcase their huge potential for inclusive and sustainable growth and serve as stewards for protecting the environment and fighting climate change.

“Through dialogue, democratic governance, and shared ownership, cooperatives can set an example for peace and stability, bringing people from diverse backgrounds together on equal terms and fostering mutual understanding and respect.”

The commissioner reiterated the government’s determination to continue to make the environment conducive for Cooperatives to thrive.

She added: “The Sanwo-Olu administration is creating and maintaining an enabling environment for the development of the Cooperative Movement. It is also fostering stronger Cooperative Societies through injection of technology in management, and improved monitoring and regulatory functions.

“I am therefore glad to announce that the efforts of the administration continue to boost the growth of cooperative practices in the state. This is reflected in the registration of 615 new Societies in the last year. This figure has added to over 3,000 societies already in existence. We are confident that the coming of these new societies will further empower thousands of Lagosians, boost productive activities and expand the State’s economy.”

The highlight of the celebration was the presentation of awards to deserving cooperatives. Chevron Employees CMS Ltd won the ‘Star Project Award’, and Ikorodu North MCU Ltd won ‘Most Outstanding Union’. …Sanwo-Olu clears outstanding pension liability

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has paid another N4.5 billion to 2,000 retirees in the 105th and last retirement bond certificate presentation.

The governor, during the 103rd presentation of bond certificates, promised to settle all arrears and current pension liabilities in the public service by the middle of the year. He fulfilled the promise earlier today.

This implies the government owes no outstanding pension benefits, and civil servants will henceforth get their full pension benefits and gratuity immediately after retirement.

The governor also launched a special health insurance scheme for all living retirees, who served the state.

He said: “Today, we mark the 105th Retirement Bond Certificate presentation and I am pleased to present bond certificates worth N4,461,659,536.82 to 2,000 retirees from our civil service. This development marks a historic milestone in our state’s transition into a new era of Pension Administration known as ‘Pay-As You-Go’. From now on, all retirees of the state government will be paid as they retire, provided all procedures and approvals have been completed before retirement.

“We have strategically prioritised clearing all backlogs of accrued rights payments to ensure our retirees enjoy dignity and financial stability after retirement. This commitment extends to the welfare of both current and former members of our workforce, recognising their unblemished careers in the state’s public service. These funds, along with their monthly contributions, have already been remitted into their respective Retirement Savings Accounts with the Pension Fund Administrators (PFAs).”

The governor said Lagos was the first to embrace the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) when it began in 2004, noting that the government has paid N141.2 billion to 35,191 retirees to date.

The state has also paid N59.7 billion to 17,039 retirees in the last five years, making Lagos a top performer in pension payments.

He added: “We have also launched a Health Insurance Scheme tailored specifically for our retirees. This scheme will provide access to a wide range of medical services, from routine check-ups to specialised treatments. This initiative underscores our commitment to the well-being of our retirees while ensuring that they receive not only what is due statutorily but also additional support and assistance to enhance their lives in retirement.”

Director-General of the Lagos State Pension Commission (LASPEC) Babalola Obilana said the settlement of backlogs of accrued rights demonstrated a significant achievement in public service, adding that the development reflected the governor’s dedication to addressing the challenges faced by our retirees.

According to him, the Pay-As-You-Go template would help secure comfortable and dignified retirement for retirees.

Head of Service Olabode Agoro, represented by Permanent Secretary in the Public Service Office, Mrs. Sunkanmi Oyegbola, noted that the Sanwo-Olu administration has been steadfast in recognising the invaluable service of the state’s workforce, which made the governor push all efforts to clear all backlogs of Accrued Rights Payments.

“The government recognises and appreciates the remarkable contributions made by our esteemed retirees. Your commitment, dedication, and sacrifices have been instrumental in the achievements of our Public Service, which in turn have significantly contributed to the progress of our great State,” he said.

Commissioner for Establishment and Training Afolabi Ayantayo said the transition to the Pay-As-You-Go template has a precedent for establishing a sustainable and dependable pension system, which would serve as a model in the country.

Ayantayo, represented by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mrs Olubukola Abidakun, said: “This gesture will undoubtedly impact the lives of our retirees positively, rebuild trust in the state’s pension system, boost employee morale, enhance productivity, and ensure that public servants can anticipate a secure retirement.”
