  • Sanwo-Olu leads southwest back to farm for food security

Sanwo-Olu leads southwest back to farm for food security

    • By Kazeem Akinmosa

There is a food crisis in the country. That is no longer news as food inflation has been hovering around 40%. Also, with the prices of staples like rice, beans and yams going off the roof while prices of pepper and tomatoes have somersaulted, as much as over 500% in some markets, eating good food is gradually becoming a luxury.

But the southwest states have decided to address this crisis headlong by heading back to the farms with full force. This was disclosed by the Chairman of the Southwest Governors Forum, Lagos Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, after a meeting in Lagos recently. It was agreed that commissioners of agriculture in the states should meet and draw up a plan to increase food in the region.

Reading a portion of the 11-point resolution, Sanwo-Olu said: “On food security, the forum acknowledges the efforts of the Federal Government and decides that the Honourable Commissioners for Agriculture of all the states should begin to meet and set up a working template, which will ensure collaboration based on each state’s comparative advantage.”

That the southwest is convening this important action is commendable. The region is blessed to have arable land which can produce different crops and should not have any business with hunger. And walking the talk, the state governments have revved into action. A news report showed that lands have been cleared just for the purpose of cultivation. AT a roundtable on food security hosted by the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria Commission (DAWN) in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Wednesday, commissioners of Agriculture from the southwest state charted a way forward..

“It is important to dispel unfounded rumours that the region has lost its capacity to produce its food.” said the Director General of the commission, Seye Oyeleye, in his opening remarks.

According to a The Nation newspaper report published on Thursday, June 20, 2024, the commissioners agreed “to pursue massive land clearing, large-scale production of short-term crops such as rice, maize, sweet potatoes and vegetables. They also agreed to revitalise moribund dams for irrigation, improve mechanisation across the value chain, adopt a cluster farming model, expand input distribution and establish an electronic agriculture database.”

Of course, they would also provide improved seeds, rural roads network, incentives to bring in the youths and investors as well as security.

Present at the meeting were the five Commissioners for Agriculture from Ekiti, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, and Oyo states: Ebenezer Boluwade, Bolu Owotomo, Olayato Aribo, Babatola Faseru, and Olasunkanmi Olaleye respectively, while Mr Emmanuel Audu, the permanent secretary of the Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture represented the state’s commissioner.

And knowing that in recent times, insecurity has been the bane of hunger, the southwestern commissioners resolved that security on the farms would be strengthened using the Amotekun architecture. Amotekun is the security unit sanctioned by southwestern states to support federal security services in addressing insecurity in the region. In the past, it was reported how cattle of some nomadic herders destroyed crops while the herders attacked and kidnap farmers, a situation which has frightened many away from their farms, resulting in food scarcity. In fact, a popular Yoruba actor, Lere Paimo, still talked about this recently.

“Let every South-West governor control the activities of herders, who always clash with farmers,” said the Oyo State born actor.

“This has sent many away from their ancestral farms, and the attendant hunger is staring us in the face.

“The herders have brought a lot of losses to many farmers by making their cattle to feed on farms while some farmers have also lost their lives in the process. Many have left their farms over this.”

This trend must be stopped. And thankfully, the Amotekun Corps have been drastically reducing these ugly scenarios.

The southwest had always been known for its agricultural prowess, cultivating crops like rice, yams, cassava, maize, beans, millet, plantains, bananas, cocoa, palm oil and kernels, and fruits. It should be remembered that even from the times of Chief Obafemi Awolowo as Premier of Western Region, agriculture was the region’s mainstay. In fact, it was proceeds from agriculture that enabled the Western Region to build Cocoa House in Ibadan, Oyo in 1964. It was the first skyscraper in West Africa and remained Nigeria’s tallest building till 1979. The region also scored many developmental firsts including providing free education. Hence, it is particularly sad that the southwest states are experiencing food shortage.

However, as the region is now set to retrace its steps, it is advisable it goes about it efficiently. For instance, it would be good to deploy technology so as to ensure maximum yield. This would mean it gets quality seeds, appropriate machinery and adopts efficient processes. I hope agricultural institutions like the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) are being carried along for this laudable project. Now, when the government has done this, there should be mechanisms to check price manipulations. In a now viral video, it was seen how some pepper sellers in one of the southwest states deliberately hiked prices in contrast to what obtained nearby. Though vagaries of weather and misfortune of insecurity may induce scarcity, there must be concerted efforts to discourage price gouging.

While all the southwest governors involved in this scheme should be commended for their foresight and co-operation, the convener of this worthy initiative, Sanwo-Olu, must be praised for the push. But I am not really surprised at Lagos’ doings. For close to a decade now, the state has maintained a partnership with Kebbi State to cultivate rice which it sells to her residents. It has instituted an agricultural masterplan which exploits her limited landmass and aquatic splendour.

Last September, as measures to ameliorate the fuel subsidy removal, Sanwo-Olu flagged off the Lagos State Government Food Bank programme. In December, he inaugurated the fresh food hub in Idi-Oro, Mushin. The building, a cynosure of sorts, is clean and welcoming residents to shop for foodstuffs at farmgate prices. And in March, Lagos initiated a Sunday food market across her 56 local government and local council development areas. Residents bought fresh foods at subsidised prices.

Some schemes to ensure Lagos can meet 40 percent of her food requirements include the Eko Agro Mechanisation Programme, the tractor-hailing application, the establishment of a 32 tonnes/hour Lagos Rice Mill at Imota, the enterprise development for women and youth in poultry production, piggery, aquaculture, apiculture, horticulture, and artisanal fishing. But the major success ingredient must be its readiness to cooperate with stakeholders.

Just like previous administrations did by partnering with other states, in January 2024, Lagos partnered with Niger and Kwara states to increase food supply via an initiative tagged, Produce-4-Lagos. According to the Lagos State Commissioner for Agriculture, Mrs. Abisola Olusanya, by cooperating with the two states that are agriculturally advantageous over it, Lagos can fulfil its food demand, particularly in livestock, fisheries and horticulture.

This time around, the cooperation of the southwestern states would surely yield fruits. And it is likely to bring about a workable template of how to cooperate to stave off hunger. By partnering in this noble experiment, I pray the southwest administrations, and other states and regions would see how copying the Lagos way of doing things, brings results.

    • Tinubu celebrates governor

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu yesterday celebrated his 59th birthday with children living with disabilities at the Lagos House in Ikeja.

The event, organised by the State Executive Council, was attended by about 250 special needs pupils and their teachers, who sang various thanksgiving songs and displayed their talents to celebrate Governor Sanwo-Olu.

The Governor, accompanied by his wife, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, and wife of the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Oluremi Hamzat, cut his birthday cake surrounded by the children from different schools in Lagos State.

He pledged to continue to prioritise the welfare and access of children, particularly those with special needs, to qualitative and free education.

Sanwo-Olu, who clocked 59 on June 25, earlier attended a thanksgiving service at the Chapel of the Lagos House, Marina.

The service, tagged ‘Celebration of God’s faithfulness’, was attended by Deputy Governor Obafemi Hazmat; First Lady Mrs. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu; Chief of Staff Tayo Ayinde and National Youth Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dayo Israel.

Also at the event were the Bishop of Lagos Diocese (Anglican Communion) Rev. Ifedola Okupevi; Special Adviser to Governor on Religious Matters (Christian Affairs), Rev. Bukola Adeleke; members of the State Executive Council, Permanent Secretaries, party members, religious leaders, close aides, families, friends, and others.

The service was also attended by special children from the Army Command School and Ereko Methodist School, Lagos.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, dressed in white traditional attire, read from Psalm 34:1–10.

Presiding Chaplain Revd. Dele Ajayi, in his sermon, said the birthday is worth celebrating because of God’s faithfulness in the life of the Governor and his family.

He prayed that God would grant Governor Sanwo-Olu all his heart desires and give him the wisdom to fulfill God’s purpose for Lagos State.

Mrs. Sanwo-Olu described her husband as a ‘superman’ because of his passion for working for Lagos State.

Commissioner for Agriculture, Ms. Abisola Olusanya, said the State Executive Council decided to celebrate Governor Sanwo-Olu’s 59th birthday with children living with disabilities because of the governor’s love for children.

Olusanya commended the students for defying the rain to celebrate the governor.

She said: “We are showing our love to Mr. Governor and the first family for their love and care, particularly towards children and children with special needs. Mr. Governor gives so much of himself day in, day out without sleep most times, and we know that at the forefront of everything he does, children are paramount, particularly those with special needs. Year in and year out, he does so much for them, but we felt that on a day like this, there is no better time or better way to celebrate his 59th birthday than with the children.

“The Executive Council put together this event in honour of the man that we serve with and also to show the children that we indeed care for them and we love them.”

President Bola Tinubu, in a statement yesterday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, wished Sanwo-Olu many more years of good health, wisdom, and energy in his service to Lagos State and the nation.

It reads: “President Bola Tinubu congratulates the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on his birthday. Governor Sanwo-Olu had a successful career in the private sector before joining the public service, scaling the leadership ladder.

“The President prays for many more years in good health for the Governor and wishes him more wisdom and energy in his service to Lagos State and the nation.”

Sanwo-Olu promises to complete 70m- gallon Adiyan water project

Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has reiterated his administration’s resolve to complete the 70 million-gallon-per-day Adiyan Water Project which was abandoned for years.

Sanwo-Olu made the promise at the fifth Lagos International Water Conference.

He noted that the project would have to be completed in the next one year.

The conference had as theme ‘Financing Water and Sanitation for a Greater Lagos’.

Sanwo-Olu highlighted the importance of financial resources in achieving the goals of water security, accessibility and sustainability.

He said: “For us, it is not just about lip service. We want to move away from rhetorics, we want action. Let it not be just a talk shop where we exchange ideas and nothing happens in the next one year.

“We have been training our officials and that has not given solutions. Let’s stop this rhetoric. We want to build partnerships; let us identify what needs to be done.

“Whatever that will take us, we are going to complete the 7 million gallons-per-day Adiyan water treatment plant.

“If I’m making myself an example, I am looking for partners. It has always been proposals, we need people who are committed. Water does not have enemies but unfortunately, we are the enemies of water.

Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev, who spoke as a special guest of honour, said Lagos, being a mini Nigeria, must get right.

“If Lagos gets it right, Nigeria will get it right,” he noted.

He added: “Lagos has its challenges when it comes to water sanitation. Water is not just a basic need but also crucial to healthy living.

“Lagos faces multi-facetted challenges as regards water sanitation as a result of rapid population growth and infrastructural challenges.”

The Minister said addressing these challenges requires concerted efforts and innovative strategies.

He advised community-based and private partnership to address the water sanitation challenges, saying micro finance institutions could provide loans in this regard.

Governor Sanwo-Olu at 59: Celebrating a visionary leader par excellence, by Ayodele Ogunsan

In the words of English-American author and inspirational speaker, Simon Sinek, “Leadership is not about being in charge. It is about taking care of those in your charge.”

On the auspicious occasion of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu‘s birthday, it is fitting to celebrate his exemplary leadership and the remarkable strides he has made in Lagos State. Since assuming office, Governor Sanwo-Olu has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to transforming Lagos into a global megacity, addressing long-standing challenges while implementing forward-thinking policies that have profoundly impacted the lives of Lagosians, having lost himself in service to the people.

Little wonder why Mahatma Gandhi said: “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”

It suffices to say that Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration has been marked by numerous illustrious accomplishments across various sectors:

     On Infrastructure Development

    – Pen Cinema Flyover: The majestic completion of this major flyover in Agege has significantly improved traffic flow and reduced travel time for residents, enhancing connectivity between different parts of Lagos. Rehabilitation and reconstruction of major roads include:

    – Ibrahim Taiwo Road: This critical road has been meticulously reconstructed to improve accessibility and ease of movement.

    – Iyana-Ipaja Bridge: Essential repairs and upgrades to this bridge have alleviated traffic bottlenecks, enhancing the commuter experience.

    – Badagry Expressway: The ongoing reconstruction and expansion of this key highway aim to invigorate economic activities by improving access to the Badagry area.

    – Ongoing Construction of the Fourth Mainland Bridge: This ambitious project will be the longest bridge in Africa upon completion, providing a vital link between the Lagos Mainland and the Island, further easing traffic congestion and fostering economic growth.

    – Lekki Regional Road Project: Designed to decongest the Lekki-Epe Expressway, this project will provide alternative routes and improve traffic flow in the rapidly developing Lekki corridor.

    – Housing Projects: Governor Sanwo-Olu has initiated several housing schemes, such as the LagosHOMS project, aimed at providing affordable housing for residents. Notable projects include the completion of housing units in locations like Igando and Ikorodu.

    On Transport

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has made significant strides in the transport sector, transforming Lagos into a more connected and efficient city. Some of his notable achievements in the sector include Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Blue and Red Lines. The Blue Line is the construction of the LRMT Blue Line, a 27-kilometre rail project stretching from Marina to Okokomaiko, is aimed at easing traffic congestion and providing a reliable, efficient, and environmentally friendly public transport option. This project is a major step towards modernising Lagos’ transportation infrastructure.

The LRMT Red Line, another ambitious rail project, runs from Agbado to Marina and is designed to further alleviate traffic congestion and provide a seamless transit option for residents. This line is integrated with the existing Lagos-Ibadan Railway, enhancing connectivity within the state.

Talking about the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), the expansion of the BRT system has been a priority, with new corridors being developed to improve the efficiency and reach of the BRT network. This includes routes such as the Oshodi-Abule Egba corridor, which has significantly reduced travel time for commuters. Introduction of modern, high-capacity BRT buses that are air-conditioned and equipped with Wi-Fi, providing a comfortable and convenient travel experience for Lagosians.

The workaholic Governor has taken up water transportation enhancements that sought an expansion of ferry services to provide alternative transport routes across the waterways of Lagos. This includes the construction of new jetties and the introduction of modern ferries, promoting water transportation as a viable and efficient option.

A more efficient traffic management and control, through the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), is also in place; strengthening the capacity and efficiency of LASTMA to manage traffic flow and enforce traffic regulations, leading to improved road safety and reduced congestion. Installation of modern traffic lights and road signs across the state to enhance traffic management and ensure smooth vehicular movement, now makes the outlook of the state worthy of being called a smart city.

In Lagos, this same Lagos, one gets to also gets to experience the implementation of an Intelligent Transport System (ITS) to manage traffic flow more effectively through the use of technology. This includes traffic cameras, sensors, and real-time data analytics to monitor and control traffic.

Governor Talk-and-do (if I may employ the cliche) has developed an integrated transport app providing real-time information on bus schedules, traffic conditions, and route planning, making commuting more efficient for residents; development of dedicated cycling lanes and pedestrian walkways to promote non-motorised transport options and ensure the safety of cyclists and pedestrians.

    On Environmental Sustainability

    – Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) Reforms: Enhanced waste collection and disposal systems, introduction of waste sorting and recycling initiatives, and partnerships with private sector players have significantly improved waste management.

    – Cleaner Lagos Initiative: Regular street cleaning, waste-to-energy projects, and community-based waste management programs have promoted a cleaner and healthier environment.

    – Flood Mitigation Efforts: Dredging of major canals, construction of new drainages, and regular maintenance of existing drainage systems to address and reduce flooding issues.

    – Collaboration with Federal Security Agencies: Strengthened partnerships with the Nigerian Police Force, military, and other federal security agencies to ensure a coordinated approach to maintaining law and order.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has made substantial contributions to the Lagos State Security Trust Fund (LSSTF), strengthening security infrastructure and ensuring a safer environment for residents.

The Governor continues to ensure that the LSSTF is adequately funded to carry out its mandate effectively, demonstrating a commitment to prioritising security in the state’s budget.

Under Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration, the LSSTF has procured and distributed hundreds of patrol vehicles to various security agencies, enhancing their mobility and response time. In addition to vehicles, the Fund has provided motorcycles for quick response units and patrol boats to secure the waterways of Lagos, ensuring comprehensive coverage across land and water.

Renovating and equipping police stations with modern facilities to create a conducive working environment for officers and improve service delivery; building new command and control centres, barracks, and other infrastructure necessary for the effective functioning of security agencies; strengthening partnerships with the private sector to pool resources and expertise, enhancing the effectiveness of the LSSTF, are all part of the sterling achievements of the dynamic governor.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to enhancing the LSSTF has led to significant improvements in the security landscape of Lagos. His proactive measures, coupled with substantial investments in infrastructure, equipment, and personnel, have fortified the state’s security apparatus, making Lagos a safer place for its residents and businesses.

    Personal Traits of Mr Governor

Beyond his policy achievements, Governor Sanwo-Olu’s personal traits have greatly contributed to his success as a leader. His approachability and genuine empathy have fostered a strong connection with the people of Lagos, making him a governor who truly listens and responds to the needs of his constituents. His integrity and transparency in governance have earned him the trust and respect of Lagosians, while his visionary mindset and proactive nature ensure that the state remains on a progressive path.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s landmark performance in office sets him apart as the best in this dispensation. His visionary leadership, coupled with a profound sense of accountability and dedication to public service, has brought about transformative changes that resonate with the aspirations of Lagosians. As we celebrate his birthday, we acknowledge and commend his tireless efforts to build a Greater Lagos, as he continues to break ground on all fronts. It was John C. Maxwell who said “a leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.”

To our amiable governor at 59, here is to many more years of impactful leadership and continued success for Lagos State, under your watch.

I wish to join other Lagosians in wishing Mr Governor Many Happy Returns.

  • Sanwo-Olu: Hearty cheers to a leader who cares!

Sanwo-Olu: Hearty cheers to a leader who cares!

    By Funke Cole

To say that Lagos State Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu is one leader who cares so much and even does so much within the limits of the scarce resources is certainly stating the obvious. Of course, people might choose to query the fact that, isn’t serving Lagosians as part of his constitutional mandate in the first place?

That’s a no-brainer, really. But I can wager that under Sanwo-Olu, Lagos State indeed has enjoyed lots of benevolence when compared to other states more endowed. The BOS train has been delivering the goods to the people wherever and whenever it matters, with no capping!

To attempt a horse of recall, one cannot easily forget the enormous projects he began and completed during the last four years and still counting even at his second coming.

As a true Lagosian and one who follows the rapid events that affect governance in the Centre of Excellence, one can say without any fear of contradiction that Governor Sanwo-Olu has indeed been a blessing to the state thus far.

Using his governance template encapsulated in the T.H.E.M.E.S+ agenda, Sanwo-Olu has ensured that every nook and cranny of the state has enjoyed the largesse and the dividends of democracy. The developmental focus of the Sanwo-Olu administration T.H.E.M.E.S+ stands for Transportation and Traffic Management; Health and Environment; Education and Technology; Making Lagos State a 21st Century Megacity; Entertainment and Tourism; Security and Governance; while the “plus”, which was included at the onset of the governor’s second term, represents Social Inclusion, Gender Equality and Youth.

From the development of intermodal transportation systems across roads, rail and sea, to road infrastructure, housing schemes, and functional educational systems across primary, post primary and tertiary institutions; to excellent healthcare delivery system, efficiency in the management of waste, to scholarship, crime prevention and control, women and child support care to other innumerable interventions that has brought succour to the people of the state, are all testaments to the governor’s sense of responsibility as a true leader of men.

How else do you know a governor who cares if not by acts of benevolence as mentioned above. Interestingly, this has remained the signpost of his administration, and there is no sign that this would stop. Rather, we have seen an acceleration of such gestures even when least expected.

This year alone, Lagosians have enjoyed and benefited from Sanwo-Olu’s gesture in ways immeasurable such that many have even lost count. Just last month, the governor launched a comprehensive package of interventions tagged EKO CARES. The state government said the initiative was aimed at further alleviating the economic hardship faced by Lagosians.

The initiative, which aims to provide relief in transportation, education, health, and agriculture, is designed to cushion the effects of the fuel subsidy removal and the rising cost of living, the statement said.

“To drive the initiative, Sanwo-Olu has set up a non-partisan Special Dispensation Advisory Council comprising eminent Nigerians.

“The governor chairs the council, with the Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, as alternate Chairman. The council also includes rights activists, religious leaders, a youth representative, and opposition party chieftains as members”, the statement said.

In February, the governor had rolled out various forms of palliative packages to ease the economic hardship of residents. Specifically, he announced a 50 per cent cut in fares on all government transport platforms on 8th of February 2023. However, after a review of the situation, the fare slash was reduced to 25 per cent.

For six weeks, the Ounje Eko Sunday market that signalled the reduction of food by 25 per cent has been running just as civil servants from levels one to 14 were asked to work thrice a week while a N35,000 wage award was also given to all civil servants. About 15,000 women from all the 20 local governments and 35 Local Council Development Areas got N50,000 each to support their businesses.

Besides, Sanwo-Olu announced free delivery for expectant women in all government hospitals, among other initiatives. One of the beneficiaries of the free healthcare delivery for expectant mothers, Mrs Damilola Asabi, was effusive with praises for the governor when she spoke with yours sincerely recently. According to her, the Ilera Eko Scheme was indeed a lifesaver.

An elated Asabi said: “When I had my baby at the Alimosho General hospital few months ago, my husband was out of job. But thank God that we enrolled in the Ilera Eko Scheme, that made a lot of difference at the end of the day because we didn’t have to worry about medical expenses this time. Everything was taken care of. I can only thank the governor for his benevolence. May the Good Lord continue to bless his every cause and endeavours in life”.

Like Asabi, several others have spoken overwhelmingly about the outstanding performance of the ever performing governor Lagos State is lucky to have at this point in time.

If the horrible things we hear about other serving governors are anything to go by, then it may be correct to say that Sanwo-Olu’s kindred spirit which helps him to show his humanity to others when it matters most deserves commendations from the good people of Lagos State, hence yours truly decided to pen this tribute to our amiable governor on this auspicious occasion of his natal day today.

Happy hearty cheers Governor Sanwo-Olu. Lagosians wish you well. May you finish strong, Sir!
