  • Lawmaker to Sanwo-Olu: Be focused

The Chief Whip of Lagos State House of Assembly, Rotimi Abiru, has urged Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to prioritise the needs of Lagosians within the available resources.

This, according to the lawmaker, will make the people feel the impact of government.

Abiru, who represents Shomolu Constituency Two at the Lagos Assembly, made the call on a live television programme in Ikeja.

The lawmaker said: “Meeting the demands of Lagos state residents is challenging due to the growing population of the state.”

He aaded: “Lagos is the microcosm of the nation where all tribes or even families are represented”  the lawmaker emphasised.

Abiru appealed to Sanwo-Olu to implement of the outcome of town hall meetings to be organised by the Lagos Assembly in the constituencies in Lagos state.

He stressed that the constituencies’ town hall meetings was initiated by the leadership of the House of Assembly to get the feedback of people the lawmakers represent.

Abiru called on Lagosians to support the government by paying their taxes, dispose their refuse properly and obey traffic rules among other civic obligations.

  • ‘Sanwo-Olu is on course’

Lagos State All Progressives Congress (APC) Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) member Chief Lanre Rasak spoke with reporters on the performance of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, national secuirty and how the ‘Next Level Agenda’ of President Muhammadu Buhari can succeed. Musa Odoshimokhe was there.

What is your assessment of the Sanwo-Olu administration in the last three month?

From May 29, the governor hit the ground running and that is why work has commenced on the reconstruction of the abandoned Mile2- Badagry expressway. He has resuscitated the project, not because the people protested, but because it is part of his plans to alleviate the suffering of motorists and commuters moving from Ijora, Ebute Metta, National Theatre to Badagry and Seme border. Contractors are already working on the project. These critics should realise that in road construction and other capital projects, you need to provide good design which must be cost effective and enduring. And these I am sure, are the necessary steps the governor had taken which required a few weeks and it is the right thing to do as a government. So, I can confidently say that the governor had been performing from day one. If he is faster than this, we don’t pray for a crash. He is taking his time to provide good plans, ensure that the plans he is fine tuning are the ones that are easily applicable, cost effective and sustainable.

I believe that given his background coupled with the governor’s experience, we should expect a lot of socio-economic transformation in the state in the next four years; they require very solid collaboration and teamwork to deliver on governor’s master plan. Another point is that officials need to do some costing after projects’ designs are prepared before execution. I appeal to all Lagosians to give all the necessary support to the State Government for the Sanwo-Olu’s administration to succeed.

You have been part of the development strides in Lagos State as an indigenous contractor. What has been your experience?

Righteous Construction Company Nigeria Limited, my company has been partnering with Lagos State government in the road sector. But, Governor Sanwo-Olu believes that government should further encourage and patronise Nigeria’s indigenous contractors for them to fully develop and that we should not continue to rely on foreign construction giants for the construction of roads and bridges. The reason is that oftentimes it is the commitment and honesty of a road builder that determines its durability or not. A good example is the Ago Hausa-Itoikin stretch of Lagos – Ikorodu road which my company constructed in 2003. It is the only section of the road that has not gone bad since it was built about 16 years ago.

That shows that an indigenous contractor knows the terrain very well and did a good job that has stood the test of time. More importantly, we have added a very important item in road construction, asphalt which many have been complaining is scarce. We have acquired an asphalt plant in partnership with the Federal Government located at Ijora Olopa, in Lagos Mainland and I can assure you that our product stands out to be the best. So we are looking forward to government patronage so that our company will continue to be part of the success story of building good and enduring road network in Lagos State.

I have discovered that over time the foundation of some of the roads built over 30 years ago have gone bad and needed to be fully replaced which is why it won’t be enough to just provide palliative work on such roads; they require total reconstruction. We are confident that Lagos State will address the issue of some deplorable roads in parts of the state because it is a government of the All Progressives Congress (APC) a party that is totally committed to the welfare of the people. It is an egalitarian administration which believes in doing the greatest good to the greatest number of people. Apart from roads, the government is also working seriously in other sectors like education, health, transportation that require special attention. The government will spread development evenly across the state and the people will be happy they voted APC both at the state and federal levels. The transport sector comprising roads, the ferry services and the blue rail are receiving adequate attention from the governor. Government wants to synchronise all transportation modes across the state in order to give Lagosians the best system in the country as a Centre of Excellence.

How can Nigeria resolve the security challenge?

My take on this is two- fold. The first question we should be asking ourselves as Nigerians is: why the sudden upsurge in insecurity? I say this because there is an adage that ‘if you don’t stop the cause of war, you can’t stop the war’. So what are the remote and immediate causes of the sudden escalation in insecurity? Is it due to the poor economic situation in the country? Could it be the non-employment of our graduates? Are there political reasons? Is there any involvement by foreign nations? Sincerely I believe government should investigate these posers and come up with appropriate responses and strategies moving forward. The point I am making here is that security is the business of every Nigerian, not only that of President Muhammadu Buhari, governors and the security operatives. As a matter of fact those perpetrating violence and other criminal activities are not ghosts but human beings who stay in our communities and live among the people. So I want to urge every Nigerian with credible information about such criminals to volunteer same to the security agencies so that they can act very decisively against the hoodlums.

I believe that if you have a job to do and can feed yourself and your family, giving  them three square meals a day without allowing them beg  for alms, such person will not easily become a tool in the hands of terrorists and people recruiting idle hands for banditry or Boko Haram. The people should volunteer information to security operatives for them to adequately safeguard lives and property. I am glad too that the issue of N30, 000 national minimum wage is being addressed. Our governors should not consider the amount too much rather they should sit down and think outside the box to generate additional revenue from internal sources required to implement the pay rise. They should not only wait for their monthly statutory allocation from the Federation Account. Some states have comparative advantage in some agricultural produce and if they invest massively on agriculture the produce will be very satisfying to make more money to their coffers. They should grow rice, cotton, ground nut, palm oil, palm kernel and other cash crops to make more money for their states.

They shouldn’t rely on taxes alone but diversify their revenue base to farming and fishery because that is the only way they can generate more funds for them to take care of the needs of their people in the states. We remember the good old days when Chief Obafemi Awolowo was in charge of Western Region, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe in charge of the Eastern Region and Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Sardauna of Sokoto was in charge of the Northern Region.

I keep wondering what happened to the groundnut pyramids of those days in the north. We should return to land, we in the South West should improve on cocoa production while our brothers in the South East and South South should embark on new palm tree plantations. I urge our President and governors to intensify their efforts in promoting agriculture in the country. We should deliberately concentrate on the production of some key agricultural products to generate additional revenue to meet the needs of Nigerians rather than relying on crude oil.

Before now, there were calls for the dualisation of the Lekki— Epe road to facilitate movement in the Lekki Free Zone. What is the latest development on the project?

Nature is a wonderful thing. There are developments that should trail one another. With the establishment of the Lekki Free Zone, the government fully understands the need to provide an enabling environment for businesses to thrive and facilitate the movement of persons and goods. If I may ask: what are the factors that will make the environment attractive and meaningful to the people of the zone? Let me assure that we can’t have such massive industrial hub with a refinery, petrochemicals, fertiliser and a host of other industries in that corridor without an expressway.

Plans are also in the pipeline to build an airport while work is progressing satisfactory on deep seaport. I want to state categorically that the Lagos State government under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu will dualise the road to fully maximise the opportunities and potential that will be available to Lagosians, Nigerians, foreigners and the Lagos State government there. I am confident that this massive industrial development requires a standard road and the government will definitely construct one to meet the needs of the people of that area and those who are coming to transact business. In Lagos State, we have been lucky to have such very good leaders as Alhaji Lateef Jakande, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and others in charge of government. Governor Sanwo-Olu will not disappoint the people and will do his utmost best for the people around the Free Trade Zone to be happy because he knows what is required and expected of him.

So we are confident that the road from Lekki to Epe as well as the road from Eleko junction to Free Trade Zone will be dualised. It is when that is done that we are going to have a very conducive environment for the new industries to thrive and not face transportation difficulties. So I am personally convinced that the Sanwo-Olu’s administration will execute these projects for the benefit of the people.

  • Sanwo-Olu: I’ll be open and transparent

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has promised to preside over an open and transparent administration that will be the pride of the Centre of Excellence.

He said: “I must continue to raise the bar of performance. We need to get to the next level that is better than yesterday.”

The governor told reporters at the State House, Marina, at the weekend that, at the end of four years, Lagos will not remain the same, stressing that his administration will be decisive in its determination to fight poverty and create opportunities for businesses to thrive.

Noting that last Saturday marked his 74 days in office, Sanwo-Olu said “it has been 74 days of ups and downs, 74 days of essence of governance, 74 days of rebirth of me and glorious things happening in Lagos State.”

Reiterating his determination to make a difference, he added: “It should be better. People are watching and conscious of what you do. I thank the media for support. I thank God for being at the helm of leadership of the City State of Lagos.”

The governor described the journey of administration as a long marathon, recalling that he got the first baptism from the media when he went to Abuja, only to realise the second day that the least aspect of the short interview with him about his lost weight was reported.

Sanwo-Olu said the last 74 days were characterised by pressures, hard work, assessment and strategic interaction with the civil service to know the state of affairs and challenges.

He said his choice by Lagosians and the conferment of a popular mandate on him were not lost on him.

Sanwo-Olu promised to do what will delight the media and sustain the confidence of Lagosians in his ability to deliver the dividends of democracy.

He added: “At the end of the four years, Lagos will not remain the same.”

  • Sanwo-Olu to manufacturers: tackle plastic pollution

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has urged manufacturers to develop alternatives to plastic bottles and other non-degradable items, which are threatening the environment.

Sanwo-Olu made the call at an environment forum in Lagos, with the theme ‘’The earth, our business, our future’’.

The governor, represented by his deputy, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, lamented that plastic waste constituted over 70 per cent of items polluting water bodies and blocking drains, with the devastating flooding.

“Our administration is ready to collaborate with the private sector whose activities impact more on the environment to seek innovative ways of carrying on their activities without jeopardising people’s lives and the sustainability of the planet.

“These organisations must consider investing in new environmentally friendly technologies, especially in the areas of renewable energy, waste recycling, emissions and packaging.

“For instance, plastic waste constitutes a major challenge to the environment, polluting our water bodies and blocking our drainage.”

“We owe it as a responsibility to our future to promote policies, strategies and business models that will ensure the sustenance of an environment that will continue to provide support for our lives, our businesses and the future of humanity,” Sanwo-Olu said.

Pan African Capital Holdings Chairman Mr Dolapo Atekoja said  the forum was to share ideas and proffer solutions to the menace of environment degradation driven by consumerism.

‘’As, a company, we   are    convinced that   issues   of   climate   change and environmental   sustainability  should   be   on   the   front banner. That  is why we  have been a leading voice, both internationally and locally, in promoting this very important subject; so, we are particularly glad that you are here to lend your voice because the issues of enhancing the environment is one of collaboration rather than isolation.

  • Make impact, Sanwo-Olu urges corps members

LAGOS State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has advised corps members posted to the state to see their posting as a challenge to contribute to societal development.

Speaking during the close of the orientation programme for Batch B Stream 1 corps members at the Iyana Ipaja National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Orientation camp on Monday, Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by the Secretary to the State government, Mrs Folasade Jaji, said: “Your place of primary assignment should be viewed as a challenge to contribute to the overall socio-economic and political development of our state and the nation as a whole.”

The Governor also urged the corps members to utilize the vocational skills learnt under the Skills Acquisition programme so they could qualify for loans under the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund (LSETF).

In his speech, State Coordinator, NYSC Lagos, Mr Sunday Aroni, praised the corps members for their comportment during the three-week orientation course.  He admonished them to be good citizens and avoid spreading fake news through the social media.

“Permit me to use this occasion to admonish my dear corps members to avoid the abuse of social media, broadcast of false news and hate speech in line with the Federal Government’s efforts at containing avoidable crisis in our nation,” he said.

Speaking on his experience in camp, visually-impaired corps member, Oladipo Emmanuel, said he got a lot of support and did not find being in camp intimidating.

The Mass Communication graduate of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) said he wants to spend his service year impacting children positively.

“I want to go into social development and I want to see how I can cater for the less privileged children.  I want to go into children’s ministry,” he said.

Another corps member, Chidinma Onwuyili, a Modern European Languages graduate of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU), Awka, described the time in camp as interesting time for learning.

She however said the camp accommodation was cramped though effort was made to keep the environment clean.

“It was a wonderful experience full of learning.  I wish the number of bunks in the rooms would be reduced.  There were 18 bunks in my room.  It made the room too compact and stuffy,” she said.

At the closing ceremony for Batch B Stream 1 corps members posted to Ogun State in Sagamu, the NYSC State Coordinator, Dr Belinda Faniyi appealed to potential employees to receive them warmly and provide for their needs.

She said: “I will like to appeal to employers of corps members and community leaders to help receive them warmly so that they can settle down quickly, as first impression matters.”

“I also want to appeal to those organisations that enjoy the services of corps members but are yet to provide basic needs like accommodation, medical care, transport to and from places of primary assignments, among others to reconsider their stance and be more emphatic about these youths who have left their family behind to obey the clarion call for the service of fatherland.”

Dr Faniyi said the corps members had been exposed to various skills as part of NYSC skill acquisition and entrepreneurship development (SAED) initiative, aimed at making young graduates self-reliant and job creators.

Thanking various sponsors for their moral and financial backing, Belinda praised Ogun State Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun, for directed that the NYSC should present its challenges to the government.

Abiodun expressed optimism that the Batch ‘B’ Stream corps members would spend the 11 months in partnering the state to attain greatness.

Abiodun, who was represented by the permanent secretary, Ogun State Ministry of Youth and Sports, Peter Fagbohun, urged the corps members to be good examples to young people in the communities they are posted to.

“I am aware of the many entrepreneurship and skill-acquisition and motivational lectures that were organised for you in the course of your induction. It is not only to sensitise you, but to prepare you for post service self-employment. I also enjoin you to be role models to other youths in your host communities by putting into practices those virtues and skills you have acquired in the course of this induction. As agent of positive change, you have a task to transform them positively and in still in them those qualities need for tomorrow’s leaders.”

  • Sanwo-Olu to upgrade PHCs

The permanent secretary, Lagos State Primary Health Care Board, Dr.  Tayo Lawal, has said that the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu will restructure healthcare delivery system in the state. He explained that this expected upgrade will come through comprehensive renovation of existing primary health centres (PHCs) as part of the drive to put confidence in the system and increase access to healthcare services.

Lawal, who stated this in his office  while reviewing the report of the present state of primary health facilities in Lagos, reiterated that one of the core policy objectives of the present administration in the health sector is to increase access to healthcare services through the revitalisation of the state’s primary health system.  While noting that primary healthcare is the bedrock of healthcare service delivery system worldwide, the permanent secretary explained that the planned construction of new PHCs as well as renovation and upgrade of existing ones by the present administration is in line with the state government’s desire to bring quality and efficient healthcare services closer to the people.

“Governor Sanwo-Olu is poised to ensuring that the entry point of the state healthcare system, which are the primary health care centres, delivers on its mandate of providing quality basic healthcare services without any barrier whatsoever in line with the state government’s commitment to achieve universal health coverage,” he said.

Lawal, who stated that though the planned revitalisation will translate to improved health services at the PHCs,  assured that all PHCs in the state have been equipped with the right facilities to provide minimum healthcare package, which includes health promotion and education; maternal and child health care services; and treatment of common ailments and diseases. “The strategies for these will be through Basic Health Care provision fund and sustainable drug revolution fund. The components of Basic Health Care provision fund include Health Insurance Scheme, Emergency Medical Services, provision of essential drugs, equipment, capacity building and community participation,” Lawal said. He added that the Lagos State Primary Health Care Board will intensify its monitoring of PHCs facilities in order to ensure that they provide quality and efficient health care services.

He also said training and capacity building for health workers at the Primary Health Centre will be given the priority it deserves, stressing that human resource development is pivotal to delivery of quality healthcare services. “We have continued to train and orientate health workers at our centres. This is in a bid to ensure that clients that patronise our facilities get the best care possible.”

Burutai made the pledge yesterday when he paid a courtesy visit to the Lagos state governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu at Lagos House, Alausa, Ikeja.

  • ‘Sanwo-Olu should instill sanity on roads, hospitals’

An advocacy group, Africa Association of Professional Freight Forwarders and Logistic of Nigeria (APFFLON), has called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to end insecurity on Lagos roads and extortion of patients in the general hospitals.

The National President, Frank Ogunojemite, who addressed a news conference at the weekend, said it was no longer news that hoodlums seize every opportunity to dispossess motorists of their belongings, especially when they are stuck in traffic.

Ogunojemite noted that the stress and inhuman conditions patients are subjected to in government-owned hospitals should also be looked into.

He said: “Important steps like the executive order on waste management, zero tolerance on pot holes, the riot act on traffic management, and above all, your urgent intervention in the perennial Apapa gridlock which has brought so much pains to port users and residents, these are indeed noble steps sir.

“Commuters are being molested daily, even in the full glare of the public, and nothing happens. Therefore, it is very imperative to address insecurity to have a safer Lagos.

“Besides, the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) must rise to their responsibilities; they should tackle the insecurity on our roads as molestations and robberies have become the order of the day.”

Ogunojemite suggested that more LASTMA officials be recruited to ensure efficiency in traffic management as the current number cannot effectively control Lagos traffic.

He also appealed to the governor to ensure that motorcyclist be routinely checked to ensure they are mentally stable and drug free, and above all, professionally qualified to carry out such service.

The president also lamented that most health workers have no modicum of regard for patients, saying the difficulties they go through before medical attention is highly demoralising.

“To see doctors in these government hospitals become very difficult due to systemic corruption, in most cases only those who bribe them go in first for consultation while those who have no money are made to see the doctor last.

“We urge you to set up measures to address the extortion and misconduct as the system has been polluted,” Ogunojemite added.

  • Abibatu Mogaji lived exemplary life, says Sanwo-Olu

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has described the late President-General (Iyaloja) of the Association of Market Women, Alhaja Abibabu Mogaji, as a “fantastic adviser and selfless leader” that used her influence for the common good of the people.

Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, spoke during a thanksgiving at the Chapel of Christ The Light in Alausa to mark the sixth year remembrance of the late Alhaja Mogaji, noted that she was a leader and a social crusader worthy of emulating.

He urged leaders to emulate the leadership traits of the late Alhaja Mogaji, saying her legacies would only be sustained, if leaders created a society that will work for all citizens.

During his exhortation, Chairman of the Lagos State chapter of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Apostle Alexander Bamgbola, urged leaders to dedicate their lives towards building legacies that will outlive them and also to devote time for righteous deeds while alive.

In his homily sermon titled: “God’s Mercy In The Midst of Adversity”, Apostle Bamgbola noted that God had a conclusion for every human’s life when he said people must always seek direction from God to live a life that would have an exemplary conclusion.

Reading from 2 Samuel 24:14, the cleric urged believers not to hesitate in seeking God’s mercy, noting that it is only through the mercy of God that a life could end with good memories.

The cleric, who stressed that Alhaja Mogaji led a life that was worthy of emulation, said the deceased left a memory that posed a challenge to people towards building on the good legacies she left behind.

He said: “After death, what is left is a memory of the deceased. And this is what people will remember about every one of us after we leave this world.

“Mama Mogaji is being remembered six years after her demise because of the good memories she left in our mind. It is the only memory that will abide forever. What memory are we leaving behind when we leave?” he said.

The cleric advised believers to strive to create memories that would make people remember them for their deeds.

President-General of Association of Market Women Mrs. Folashade Tinubu-Ojo led members of Tinubu’s family and market leaders to the service.

Others dignitaries at the thanksgiving service include the wife of the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Oluremi Hamzat, Chief of Staff Mr. Tayo Ayinde, Head of Service Mr. Hakeem Muri-Okunola, Deputy Chief of Staff Mr. Gboyega Soyannwo and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs, Mr. Adebunmi Adekanye, among others.

  • Sanwo-Olu: Forging ahead with courage and confidence

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who clocks 54 today, has hit the ground running, following his assumption of office. Group Political Editor EMMANUEL OLADESU writes on the challenges before his administration and how he is trying to foster good governance in the Centre of Excellence.

The experience of the last 25 days has shown that Lagosians made a wise choice during the last governorship election. Young, dynamic and forward-looking Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has demonstrated wit, competence and determination to succeed. Although he is yet to set up his cabinet of talents, it is evident that morning shows the day. The few appointments-Tayo Ayinde as Chief of Staff and Mrs. Folasade Jaji as Secretary to Government-have shown that his administration is taking shape.

As the governor clocks 54 today, there may be no time for merry making. He is likely to have a much busier day initiating, planning and executing. On his shoulders rest the care of almost 20 million Lagosians, a demography that has made the Centre of Excellence a mini-country shouldering enormous national, sub-regional and continental responsibilities. Expectations are high. So far, Sanwo-Olu has not disappointed the voters. His antecedents give the assurance that he will sustain the tempo to the end.

The next day after his inauguration, the governor swung into action. He signed an executive order on indiscriminate refuse dumping, traffic management and public works, based on the acknowledgment that the state has groaned under the yoke of filth, chaotic traffic situation and infrastructural deficit. The order on indiscriminate refuse duping is now being vigorously enforced. Also, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has been directed to operate a minimum of two shifts until 11.pm daily. In the same vein, the Office of Drainage Services in the Ministry of Environment has been directed to embarke on aggressive cleaning of secondary and tertiary drainage system to ensure the free flow of rainwater during the raining season. The governor also directed that the rehabilitation of bad roads should commence.

LASTMA is not to spare the road offenders. Nobody is above the law. “If my brothers or cabinet members breaks traffic laws, arrest them,” Sanwo-Olu said. The officials are also warned against bribery. To motivate them, the governor has increased their allowances by a hundred per cent. In the opinion of the governor, the public should continue to be enlightened and encouraged to be law abiding.

Sanwo-Olu has also expressed concern over the Apapa gridlock. Now, the federal and state governments are putting heads together on how to end the logjam. “Fixing the road in Apapa, completing the trailer park and deploying technology solutions that ensure we never have to experience the trailers nightmare again are critical for Lagos and the Federal Government,” he said after he and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo (SAN) inspected the progress of work.

As the sixth elected governor of Lagos, Sanwo-Olu could be described as a man of destiny. Although no fewer than seven All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftains were on the queue, the lot fell on the surveyor and banker-turned politician to be isolated from the pack and endorsed for the ticket by the ruling party. A year ago, he only focused on his job as the Managing Director of the Lagos State Property Development Corporation (LSDPC). Little did he guess that he will be catapulted to the front burner.

To Lagosians, Sanwo-Olu is a round peg in a round hole. In the positions he held before becoming the governor, he had performed creditably. He is tested and trusted. As Special Adviser on Corporate Governance, Acting Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Commissioner for Establishment, Training and Pensions, and LSDPC boss, he heft his marks. His greatest asset is his loyalty to the party, the government and people of Lagos State.

Sanwo-Olu became a candidate to beat at the APC direct primary. As the Lagos APC family proposed change, he became the symbol of the clamour. The aged, youths, women and other stakeholders were falling upon one another to embrace his ambition and endorse his candidature. He understood the motivation for the intra-party agitation and yearnings of the party faithful. Thus, he summed them up under a big headline: inclusion. Sanwo-Olu visited all party leaders, party officers, elders, office holders, religious leaders, other Lagos opinion leaders, women groups, artisan, and peasants with a new message. In the party, he preached cohesion and unity. To Lagosians, he urged trust, confidence and faith in the ability of the ruling party to continue to deliver. He gave hope to the youths and reassure women that he will cater for their needs. Many people believe his promises and words of assurance. Lagosians took him serious.

Sanwo-Olu survived the odds during the electioneering, most especially the grand move by his main intra-party opponent to smear his name. An attempt to brand him as a liability through spurious allegations of inexplicable fraud and unstable mental state failed. Voters dismissed them as a tissue of lies. During the campaigns, the APC flag bearer waxed stronger through an uncanny display of ideas, wisdom, courage, persuasion, focus and reliance on the Almighty God.

The Sanwo-Olu campaign team, led by Ayinde, ran an effective intra-party campaign. Thus, on the day of the shadow poll, the coast was clear. A confident Sanwo-Olu was on the popularity scale radiating warmth. At the close of the poll, party members have spoken on where they were going. Ahead of th

Having secured the ticket, Sanwo-Olu was not carried away by the victory. He gazed at the general elections in sober reflection. His next task was to unite the fold as he urged members of the rival camp to put the primary behind them and join forces with him to win for APC.  Sanwo-Olu called for understanding, dialogue and reconciliation, urging those who also sought party tickets during the parliamentary primaries not to lose hope. He ensured that they were co-opted into the Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu Campaign Organisation (BOSCO).

The next hurdle was the campaign. It was not a tea party. The first rally at the Airway Ground, Ikeja was disrupted. But, necessity became the mother of invention. APC later opted for door-to-door campaigns, which were also effective. Sanwo-Olu and his team met all stakeholders across the five divisions of Lagos, Epe, Badagry, Ikorodu and Ikeja. He also held meetings with stakeholders across the tree senatorial districts. In all the places he went, he was hailed as the incoming governor.

The opponent, Jimi Agbaje of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was a veteran contender. He looked formidable and ready to give a challenge. He fired salvos at the ruling party, party leadership and his main opponent. When APC chieftains described him as a familiar customers, he replied that a customer was king. But, the bravado was in vain.  The PDP had become a fragile platform, following the gale of defections that hit it ahead of the poll. Reality dawned on the pharmacist-turned politician that the vehicle could not take him far. The handwriting was bold on the wall, although it was ignored during the campaigns. But, shortly before the announcement of results by the umpire, Agbaje called Sanwo-Olu to concede defeat and congratulate him. There was jubilation at the APC office along Acme Road, Ogba, Ikeja as the flag bearer broke the news to party elders and leaders were in the office of the party chairman, Tunde Balogun

At 54, Sanwo-Olu becomes a vital national asset, state property and inheritor of a burden of history. Lagos is not a place where the governor can relax. All Nigerians have stake in Lagos. It is the economic hub. The population is huge. Thus, there is pressure on its social infrastructure.  There is no family in Nigeria that is not represented in Lagos. Many think that Lagos is rich because of its over N30 billion Internally General Revenue (IGR). But, it may not be enough to fight the infrastructure battle. The hand of the Federal Government is heavy on the state. While over 75 percent of the Value Added Tax (VAT) is generated from Lagos, no percentage is conceded to the state. Neither has the Federal Government thought it fit to return its ‘seized’ landed property. While Niger Delta states enjoy financial assistance from the Federal Government, pleas for special economic assistance for Lagos have fallen on deaf ears.

Much is expected on Sanwo-Olu in the next four years. Many believe that he is prepared for the job. While he is also expected to build on the achievements of his predecessors, he should also learn from their shortcomings. His programme of action gives a ray of hope.  During his inauguration, he promised to work for a “greater Lagos” through the implementation of “six pillars of development agenda.”

The pillars, which he described as the framework that encapsulates his vision, include traffic management and transportation, health and environment, education and technology, making Lagos as a 21st century economy, entertainment and tourism, and security and governance.

Sanwo-Olu said: “These six pillars of development represent our response to the yearnings of the people. They constitute the foundations that must be restored for future generations. Should we fulfil our promise and deliver on these pillars, we are most confident that we would have succeeded in setting Lagos on a new trajectory of economic growth and development that would be unprecedented in our entire history.”

Sanwo-Olu has promised to complete the on-going projects initiated by former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode. Thus, there will be no abandoned projects in Lagos.

The governor was born in June 25, 1965 in Lagos. He is a graduate of thecosmopolitan University of Lagos, Akoka, where he studied Surveying. He also attended the London Business School, the Lagos Business School and the John F. Kennedy School of Government. Sanwo-Olu earned an MBA degree from UNILAG. He is an Associate Member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management (CIPM) and Fellow of the Nigeria Institute of Training and Development (NITAD).

Sanwo-Olu is not a politician without a second address. He was the Treasurer at former Lead Merchant Bank from 1994 to 1997. He also worked with the United Bank for Africa (UBA) as the Head of Foreign Money Market. At the First Inland Bank, Plc (now First City Monument Bank), he was a Deputy General Manager and Divisional Head. In private business, he was also a success. Sanwo-Olu was the Chairman of Baywatch Group Limited and First Class Group Limited. He was a board member of the Department for International Development (DFID/DEEPEN) Fund and Audit Committee of Caverton Offshore Services Group, PLC.

Since 2003, he had placed his hand on the plough and never looked back. Although he joined the Tinubu administration as a technocrat, when was appointed a Special Adviser on Corporate Matters to Pedro, he later learned the ropes. He served as Acting Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, and later, Commissioner for Commerce and Industry in 2007. In 2007, he was appointed as Commissioner for Establishments, Training and Pensions by former Governor Babatunde Fashola SAN). In 2016, Ambode appointed him as Managing Director/CEO of LSDPC. His achievements include the supervision of the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) Privatization Projects. He also played a great role in the setting up of the Lagos Security Trust Fund. He served as its pioneer board chairman. The LAGBUS System and the Control and Command Centre in Alausa were also part of his initiatives.

On September 16, last year, he threw his hat into the ring when he declared his intention to run for governor. He was endorsed by the Lagos APC Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), the three senators from Lagos, House of Representatives and House of Assembly members from Lagos State. Later, another aspirant, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, who is now deputy governor, withdrew from the race. After winning the primary on October 2, no fewer than 63 political parties,  organisations and groups endorsed his candidature.

Sanwo-Olu is a recipients of many awards and honours. They include the Platinum Award from the Lagos State Public Service Club, 2009 Best in Human Capital Development award from the Industrial Training Fund (ITF), Merit award from the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria, Merit award from the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management in Nigeria (CIPMN), Merit Award from the Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN), and LSDPC Impactful Leadership and Recognition Award.

Sanwo-Olu is married with children to Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu.
