He urged politicians to close ranks to make the state better; stressing that honesty and truth should remain the hallmark for service.

He said: “Sanwo Olu is going to serve Lagos people diligently. He is familiar with governance and equally aware of what transpired in the state. What happened prior to the election was a lesson for all and I am sure he understood what happened.

“As a leader of the party in Epe, I give thanks to God that I made my contributions to the wellbeing of the party in the division. I was instrumental to the emergence of notable party stalwarts in the state. These are people who served meritoriously in the position entrusted upon them.”

  • Sanwo-Olu: technology is new economy

Lagos State Governor-elect, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has described technology as the driver of the new economy. He said he is passionate about deploying technology to build a 21st Century economy in Lagos.

The governor-elect, who attended the launch of Microsoft Africa Development Centre (ADC), Lagos, on Friday evening, said he was excited about the development.

He reiterated the significance of technology in the 21st Century, stating that his excitement was borne out of his incoming government’s determination to use technology as a major driver of government activities.

He said: “Congratulations to the Microsoft Nigeria team on the launch of the Microsoft Africa Development Centre in Lagos.

“I am passionate about how technology will help us build a 21st Century economy, and ensuring an enabling environment for local and international partnerships will definitely be a priority.”

Sanwo-Olu recalled how his campaign team jumped on the opportunity to provide free Wi-Fi to some identified locations in Lagos including shopping malls and higher institutions and how the free service has been well utilised by the beneficiary communities.

The governor-elect thanked Microsoft group for considering siting of the centre in Lagos, which is a technology hub in sub Saharan Africa.

The global tech giant, Microsoft Corp, will invest $100 million to open its first ADC with sites in Nigeria and Kenya over the next five years.

The ADC would serve as a premier centre of engineering for Microsoft, where world-class African talent can create solutions for local and global impact.

“The ADC will be unlike any other existing investment on the continent. It will help us better listen to our customers, develop locally and scale for global impact. Beyond that, it’s an opportunity to engage further with partners, academia, governments and developers – driving impact in sectors important to the continent, such as FinTech, AgriTech and OffGrid energy.

“The ADC supports Microsoft’s mission to empower every person and organisation on the planet to achieve more.

“The ADC is the first Global Development Centre in Africa with a combined expected investment of $100 million over the first five years of operation.

“At Microsoft, we’re very fortunate to have played a part in realising this potential, building strong partnerships to accelerate digital transformation and create sustained societal impact. A big milestone for this investment came earlier this year, as we opened Africa’s first hyper-scale datacentres in South Africa, promoting business innovation in the cloud,” Microsoft said in a statement.

Sanwo-Olu promised the tech giant that his administration, when it comes on stream will partner organisations such as theirs to bring about effective realisation of his technology-driven THEME agenda.

  • Sanwo-Olu and promise of greater Lagos

The President of the Centre for Leadership and Director, United Kingdom, Jacob Ogunseye lauds Lagosians for voting for Mr. Bababjide Sanwo-Olu as governor on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Lagos State All Progressives Congress (APC) has a bright future.

The party made a wise decision in fielding Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu as governor in the last election.

Sanwo-olu may not be a Tom and Jerry mattertalk as some people thought. Besides the endorsement of Mr Sanwo-Olu by the National Leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the great job done by the campaign organisation of the party in the state, who worked assiduously to produce the governor could not be underestimated, even though, the election challenges mounted by other contenders including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Mr Jimi Agbaje appeared to be an effort in futility.

Campaigning for APC in Lagos State has never been a struggle. Tinubu has built solid political structure that produces the best across the country. How he picked the ebullient Babatunde Fashola, Yemi Osinbajo and host of others remain a secret that keep him flying. The Lagosians’ belief in Tinubu as leader and builder gave a real picture of what happened in the state. The adversaries must come to terms with it, Tinubu is a man to beat anytime in Lagos politics. You divorce him at your peril. He has done more than his contemporaries.

The prowess and sagacity of the Mandate, Justice Forum, Team Lagos and State’s campaign Council contributed immensely to the victory of Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu as the governor-elect, his deputy, Dr Kadri Obafemi Hamzat and other various elective positions in the state. The party took a brilliant path by appointing ingenious, masterly and inventive strategists to man the campaign doors across the state, rally round the 57 Local Government leaders and produced a fortified and toughened blueprint. It pays off, as the party did not only win but set a new high for APC winning chances by decimating the proportions of the votes usually gathered by the oppositions.

The political leaders in the state had set up Independent Campaign Group (ICG) as the platform for the election and the epic is the announcement of Mr Tayo Ayinde as the Director-General and Cardinal Omojola Odumbanku as the deputy. As soon as the announcement was made, the terrain changed. An articulated Tayo Ayinde, his deputy, Cardinal Odumbaku turned around Lagos state campaign electioneering process as against a “well thought” negative backlash that the political analysts and spectators have suggested would definitely follow an unimaginable denial of the incumbent governor,  Mr Akinwumi Ambode’s second term ticket. The doomed prophecies disappeared, no thanks to the ICG and its ever ready leaders.

Tayo Ayinde’s working pattern during the campaign sent a signal of victory, even before the election. He worked round the clock. “I called this man in the night, spoke for few minutes, I also sent him a message by 5am of the same day, he replied instantly, does he ever gets a night of sleep at all?” My response was simple; he is the Biblical reference of the man King Solomon referred to in one of his proverbs. “…. Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men… “

By all standards, Sanwo-Olu himself is a good political brand to market to the Lagos electorates. His party in Lagos state has been under the firm grip of the progressives since the inception of the democracy in 1999. The positive influence of the ruling party’s national leader Asiwaju Bola Tinubu in the state makes it difficult for the “Every Four-Year Customers” to make a meaningful impact, if they actually do in the real sense. With Tinubu’s support, the job of Mr Ayinde though became easy, yet he went round to garner the support and assurance of party faithful across the 57 local governments and the local development authority. How the people across the state were able to vote massively for APC and its new candidate became a misery, but very confident, Ayinde will be able to give an explanation.

Vibrant Ayinde established ICG chapters across the globe, as usual, the United Kingdom took the lead. Ibrahim Yusuf, a frontline politician in the UK was appointed to steer the affairs of the group, it quickly metamorphosed to a full-blown Diaspora campaign central body for Sanwo-Olu. ICG UK lends their support through press releases, campaign  materials, one-on-one vote conversing, organising symposium and vote-soliciting phone calls to potential Lagos voters using various forms of resource. The deputy governor-elect once visited from Nigeria, he was impressed knowing the victory is closer. The same was replicated in USA and other Diaspora chapters.

In one of the meetings held in London, United Kingdom, briefly after the inauguration of the country’s chapter, the representative of the DG re-affirmed their readiness to continue the progressive’s governance in Lagos state; some doubting Thomas openly viewed his position as self-praise suggesting it is a show-off. But history is here today to justify a campaign manager and his team worthy efforts because Sanwo-Olu will take over the affairs of state and APC will continue to govern Lagos State for another four years.

The ability of the DG and his team to easily mobilise everyone including the grassroots politicians and the elites into the same electioneering camp for the same purpose remain an impressive effort. The campaign group pulls together the artisans, different ethnic groups, people with disability, etc under the same roof. His mental ability and physical strength give hope to Nigerians. No doubt, the world is awaiting the active involvement and participation of Mr Ayinde and some of his team members to feature prominently in Sanwo-Olu’s government.

Diocesan Bishop of Lagos and Missioner Church of Nigeria, His Lordship, Rt Rev Humphrey Olumakaiye, commended efforts of the state governor in paddling affairs of Lagos in the last four.

He pointed out Ambode turned the state to a construction site with development programmes that are masses-oriented.

  • Forum to Sanwo-Olu: give us exco slots

The South South Peoples United Forum of the All Progressives Congress in Lagos State has urged Governor-elect Babajide Sanwo-Olu to give its members slots in his executive.

The group, comprising indigenes of Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Edo and Delta States, said it worked with other ethnic groups for the success of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the general elections.

But the chairman, Chief Isaac Emiyede, said the group’s efforts have not been adequately recognised and rewarded.

The group clarified that it had never been involved in anti-party activities over the years.

Emiyede said: “We reiterate that our loyalty to the party has remained unshaken and we are fully committed to the party’s policies and programmes.

“But, the unfortunate irony which makes us cry out, despite our unflinching commitment to the party, is that in all these years of our activities, achievements and contributions, our efforts have not been adequately recognised.

“The party has not empowered us, neither has it given us any appointment to sustain and keep the group together. During the last electioneering, we were marginalised and starved of campaign materials and funds. In our determination to see that APC won all elections, we resorted to self-funding through contributions and donations by our members.”

Emiyede praised Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola and the party chairman, Babatunde Balogun, for their efforts in ensuring the party’s success.

Chairman of the South South Traditional Council of Chiefs in Lagos State Chief Vincent Ahwi urged Sanwo-Olu to recognise the group because it worked like the Arewa and Ndigbo groups to give the party success of the party.

The Secretary to Ejigbo Local Council Development Area, Mr. Paul Fregene, urged the incoming administration to give members of the group the opportunity to contribute their quota to development.

  • Sanwo-Olu: Coalition expresses confidence in judiciary

A coalition of 70 rights group has expressed confidence in the Nigerian Judiciary over the case filed against the Lagos State Governor-elect, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, challenging his eligibility to occupy the exalted office.

The coalition, under the aegis of Campaign for Dignity in Governance (CDG), in a statement from its National Convener, Comrade Razaq Olokoba said his group does not entertain any iota of fear that the Judiciary would do a thorough job on the matter enthusing that Sanwo-Olu would come out victorious.

According to Olokoba, the rigorous screening the Governor-elect passed through before becoming his party’s candidate that eventually won the governorship race would see him through adding that, “the unshaking trust we have in the Judiciary has given us the confidence that it is Sanwo-Olu that would utilise the mandate freely given to him overwhelmingly by the good people of Lagos State.”

The Coalition, through the statement however praised the political maturity and patriotism of the plaintiffs in the case for toeing the legitimate path of honour by channelling their cases through the legal procedure saying, “this shows that they are peace-loving members of the society, who prefer settling grievances the civilised way.”

While awaiting the outcome of the matter in court, the coalition hails the people of Lagos on the way they are eagerly awaiting the change of baton on May 29 with anxiety, enthusing that, “the in-coming new actors would not disappoint them.

Olokoba therefore urged the people to remain law abiding as usual reminding them that no progress comes out of any chaotic atmosphere.

  • Oba Hamzat: Sanwo-Olu should fix potholes, refuse disposal

Elder statesman Oba Olatunji Hamzat on Saturday spoke on the challenges that will confront the incoming Sanwolu-led administration in Lagos State.

The Lagos State All Progressives Congress (APC) Governorship Advisory Council (GAC) leader and Olu of Afowowa Sogade in Ogun State said Governor-elect Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his team must fill the potholes on Lagos roads and ensure a clean environment.

He emphasised that bad roads and refusal disposal should be in the government’s priority list.

The eminent politician also reflected on politics and governance, urging the political parties to return to the culture of ideology.

Oba Hamzat decried the evil of monetisation of politics, the collapse of party supremacy and discipline and lack of tolerance and patience among young politicians.

The father of Deputy Governor-elect Dr. Obafemi Hamzat spoke on the state of the nation shortly after receiving a Honorary Doctorate in Arts and Public Leadership from the European-American University.

The event, which held at the main auditorium of the University of Lagos, Akoka, was coordinated by a representative of the European-American University, Prof Simeon and Dr. Josephine Ebuta.

The university management explained that Oba Hamzat merited the honour as an outstanding politician who had served as party officer at ward level, legislator, commissioner and party leader at the national level.

Oba Hamzat was accompanied by his son, Obafemi Hamzat; Chief Busura Alebiosu, Chief Rabiu Oluwa, Oyinlomo Danmole, Kunle Jeje, Emmanuel Bamigboye, Dr. Adesola Taiwo and Caleb Akinbolade.

The traditional ruler said the gridlock in Lagos was mainly caused by potholes on major roads, urging the incoming administration to rise to the challenge of fixing them.

Oba Hamzat said: “The first thing is the pot holes on our streets and major roads, which I think is the major factor for traffic jam or gridlock.

“Every nook and cranny where you have roads in Lagos is full with potholes, they must first face that.

“The second is refuse disposal. The roads are littered with refuse here and there, they must face those two challenges simultaneously so that the residents of Lagos will appreciate them.”

Lamenting the eclipse of the politics of ideology as practiced by political parties during the First and Second republics, he said modern political parties had jettisoned their core ideas and principles.

He stressed: “It is the party themselves that have completely abandoned ideology, which they stand for.

“Discipline is no more, they do not even award merit for those who worked. For us to return to sound party ideology we have to return to restructuring the political parties themselves to follow the part of discipline and merit in whatever they do.

“There are people who worked very hard for the party but at the moment, politics to me is being monetised and it may not allow us to get good candidates because in a situation where you want to run for the governorship of a state and you are looking for N20bn, where will you get it from?

“Even the habit of expecting money from politicians before they vote is a dangerous situation.

“Unless we try to change it, things may not work well. I think we should begin to think of voting for merit and not necessarily money.”
