  • Lagos is stronger for its diversity, says Sanwo-Olu

LaGos State All Progressives Congress (APC)  governorship candidate Babajide Sanwo-Oluhas yesterday said that the state is stronger socially and economically because of its diversity.

Sanwo-Olu, who spoke against discriminatory comments fuelled by the disruption of elections in some areas  during the last weekend presidential and National Assembly elections, cautioned that Lagosians should not play into the hands of mischief makers and crisis merchants.

He said the state is a home for all, assuring that, if elected, his government will serve every Lagosian, regardless of their ethnicity, religion or party affiliation.

Speaking on the conduct of the last Saturday’s elections, which he described as peaceful and well-coordinated, the flag bearer said there will be no discrimination in Lagos State.

He added: “Every resident of Lagos State is central to the promised socio-economic development of the State, and everyone has the right to identify with any party of their choice. We are stronger and better in our diversity.”

“As a politician and a governorship candidate, it will be exciting for me to have the support of every tribe in the state, but where people have other preferences, I cannot say that they do not have such rights. However, it will only be appropriate for electorate to support a party that has made Lagos a home for everyone”.

“For instance, 40 per cent of teaching staff in Lagos State public schools are non-Yorubas, the pupils in secondary schools, for which Lagos State Government pays for National Examination Council and Senior Secondary School Examinations are in equal proportion between the Yorubas and non-Yorubas in Lagos State”

“As a state, Lagos recognises her heterogeneity and will continue to promote the assorted ethnic composition as a unique advantage over other states in Nigeria. It is only in Lagos State that you can find Principal Officers, who are not ethnic people in the State Civil Service, Parastatals and Establishments. I call on our people to eschew violence and any form of harassment of innocent people. We must live in peace for development we know in Lagos to continue”, said Sanwo-Olu.

Sanwo-Olu has anchored his campaign on Inclusive Governance stressing that he will work to positive impact in the lives and businesses of Lagosians.

Earlier in his campaign, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu had engaged a number of stakeholder groups, including the Ndigbo, Arewa, Akwa-Ibom, Edo, Ijaw and other ethnics associations in Lagos.

Sanwo-Olu has hinged his campaign on the THEME agenda, a wholly social transformation programme, that will bring about a sweeping impact on Transportation & Traffic Management, Health & Environment, Education & Technology, Making Lagos a 21st Century Economy and Entertainment & Tourism.

This policy direction, which the Sanwo-Olu government, will focus its developmental efforts on, is designed for collaborative execution by the Private and Public Sector to facilitate inclusiveness and shared prosperity.

The donations includes, deskpads, printed button badges, specially printed air freshners, note pads, among others.
Speaking at the event, Prince Kosoko said the underlying motivation of my donation to APC is to show my personal engagement in the governance as an individual and also as a royalty.
“My team, Strategist Team, and I have  donated printed deskpads, curvy pen, printed button badges, specially printed air freshners, note pads, among others. We strongly believe that such materials will bring more brand visibility to the party candidates and attract a wider awareness, which we hope will result in massive votes for a victorious election.
“We cannot leave governance to the government or the political party only; it is my belief that like-minded youths are to come together to contribute in any way to support their desired party candidates, rather than seek for immediate benefits. My team will continue to positively engage with our political processes at all levels through our innovative and inventive ideas to create a new sense of youth engagement and responsibility.”
Kosoko, in a statement, said that as an African prince, he had the cultural responsibility to inspire, motivate and educate people, especially the youths. He stated, “I have the sincere love of my people in my heart and this has provoked my passion to do my own quota in human development. I am deeply inclined to participate in the democratic process of our great party  by donating to the governorship’s bid of Babajide Sanwo-Olu. • Dangote Refinery: New highway coming for oil tankers, says Sanwo-Olu

THE Lagos State All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has allayed the anxiety among some residents of Lekki-Epe axis over the imminent traffic gridlock the operations of Dangote Refinery will bring to the area.

To tackle any consequent gridlock, Sanwo-Olu said his campaign team had started discussions with Dangote Group and other developers in the area on the need for partnership to build a dedicated carriageway for trucks.

He said this would open between Lagos and Ogun states.

The APC candidate stated this in Yaba during his consultative meeting with members of Favourites Club of Nigeria.

Sanwo-Olu was accompanied to the event by his running mate, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat.

The refinery project, which is said to be nearing completion, is located in Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area of Lagos State.

After completion, the residents fear there could be more pressure on the expressway due to the anticipated influx of heavy-duty trucks to the area, which may compound the traffic situation.

But Sanwo-Olu said his government would immediately respond to the apprehension, if elected.

The APC candidate promised that there would be an alternative route for oil tankers and trucks that would ply the site of the refinery.

He promised commuters on Lekki-Epe Expressway that the road would not be affected by the refinery’s activities.

Sanwo-Olu said: “We have been hearing people say that the Lekki-Epe Expressway would be impassable when the Dangote Refinery starts operation. We are not going to deny that there would be pressure on this important highway. But we have started to respond to this anxiety and we are already in talks with Dangote Group and developers around the axis to create a new dedicated highway for the trucks that will be plying the route.

“Adding more pressure to the Lekki-Epe Expressway would compound the traffic situation on that road. The sensible thing to do is for us to have another highway for trailers that will be going to the refinery. This highway should lead to Ogun State from where the trucks can go to other parts of the country. This new route would be a big relief for the residents and businesses in Ajah and Lekki.”

Reducing traffic jams in Lagos, Sanwo-Olu said, is one of cardinal programmes of his administration, if elected.

The APC candidate said his government would also welcome ideas from the public, promising to implement any solution-based initiative that would engender free flow of traffic in the state.

The candidate promised that his administration will be committed to reducing travel time and increasing per capita productivity for Lagosians by improving infrastructures, such as road, rail and water transportation.

“Our major healthcare plan is to improve access and affordability through comprehensive health insurance and improve primary and secondary health facilities. And for our environment, LAWMA’s waste management system will be upgraded for better service delivery, while we implement measures to turn waste to wealth and ensure a clean and healthy environment in Lagos,” he added.

  • Sanwo-Olu promises Lagos take over of National Stadium

The Governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has promised to vigorously follow-up the Lagos State bid to take over the National Stadium complex in Lagos.

He made the assertion while on a special visit to the secretariat of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) Lagos chapter.

Lagos State had submitted a bid in 2016 for full takeover of the 45-year old complex but it ended as failed proposal despite the fact that the ruling party in the state won the general election at the centre in 2015. He promised to give the sports sector a special boost if elected in the coming elections in Nigeria. Governorship election in the country holds on March 2.

Sanwo-Olu said his visit was a continuation of sectorial consultation. This time, it is the sports sector. He said sports would be autonomous from the other sectors and separated for entertainment and effort would be made to ensure that the sector is self-driven to bring the best out of potentials that abound in the nooks and crannies of the state.

“This sector deserves a special attention and we will ensure that the restive youths would be fully engaged in the rediscovery of their talents in the drive to bring back the old glory associated with the state at National Sports Festival.

“Although I’m aware that other states poach athletes who have been groomed by Lagos state when national events come up, it is on record that Lagos do not need to do same because we have abundant talents who have been lured for monetary gains.

“Lagos State Sports Commission will continue with its policies such as training grants to athletes and empowering the coaches with up-to-date knowledge of their respective events, while motivation of athletes will not be neglected,” he remarked.

  • Tinubu to market women: Sanwo-Olu, Hamzat are your sons

Former Lagos State Governor and National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, yesterday met with hundreds of market women in Lagos.

Tinubu said: “As market women, you are not only our mothers, you are also playing important roles in political process and economic development. You have been pillars of support for our party and you have never disappointed us whenever we reach out to you for support. Today, we are presenting Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Obafemi Hamzat to you. These are two young, energetic and brilliant administrators, who listen carefully to advice.

“We want you to take them as sons and give them all the support they need to continue the good work we started. They are good listeners; they are not stubborn. If they make mistake, be patient with them. I know the two of them will not make decisions that will hurt your interest.”

He urged the market women to keep faith in APC, assuring them that the party would not take their support for granted.

Tinubu said APC initiated TraderMoni particularly for traders to assist them to promote their businesses.

He promised that there would be more incentives for market women and the poor if President Muhammadu Buhari is re-elected.

Asiwaju Tinubu described women as “passionate voters”, saying the Buhari-led Federal Government deserved their votes because of the various welfare programmes the government initiated to support women.

He advised the traders to work together and ensure the success of APC’s candidates across boards.

Describing Sanwo-Olu as “a loyal party man”, Tinubu said the APC governorship candidate would work to reduce poverty.

At the event were the Lagos State APC Chairman, Tunde Balogun, the lawmaker representing Lagos West, Senator Solomon Adeola, former Senators Musiliu Obanikoro and Ganiyu Solomon, and Director-General of Sanwo-Olu’s campaign, Tayo Ayinde, among others.

Each pupil in all public and private schools in Lagos State will have a Personal Identification Number (PIN) as part of reforms to be carried out in the Education sector, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the state’s All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, has said.

The move, Sanwo-Olu said, will help the government to measure the progress of the pupils.

The APC candidate explained that the data would also be used for efficient implementation of education policies and budget.

At a meeting with Joint Association of Private Schools in Lagos State (JAPSIL), Sanwo-Olu said his administration would partner proprietors of privately-owned basic and secondary schools to scale up quality of teaching and learning.

The APC candiate said the PIN would also discourage irregular transfer of pupils from one school to another, a development he said had impacted the cognitive development of child.

He said: “It is time we sanitise education in the state and secure the future of our children. We want to improve the quality, but it won’t be done until we know the specific number of pupils in a school and the number of teachers as well. We will introduce a unique PIN for each pupil from which we can monitor the educational progress of the pupil and properly plan for the cognitive development of such child.
