Sanwo-Olu, Fashola, Ambode lead Lagos APC to endorse Tinubu for second term

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State yesterday endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term.

The chapter also began mobilisation for the 2027 general election with a historic stakeholders’ meeting.

Party leaders, who were locked in sober reflection at the meeting held at the Eko Hotel, Victoria Island, attempted a review of the last polls, drawing instructive lessons from the setback.

Apart from endorsing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for re-election, party faithful brainstormed on the ongoing voter registration, the dynamic electoral demography and importance of mobilising the youths to gravitate towards the vision and philosophy of the ruling party.

President Tinubu’s base is Lagos where he served as governor between 1999 and 2007 and anchored the activities of the opposition as the Leader.

In the Third Republic, he also represented Lagos West, the largest district, in the Senate.

The motion for President Tinubu’s endorsement for a second term was moved by the Ayangburen of Ikorodu, Oba Kabiru Shotobi, and seconded by House of Assembly Speaker Mudashiru Obasa.

They said the President has done a lot in the last two years, adding that the country deserves the progressive continuity.

They also urged party members to unite and work for President Tinubu and the party’s victory at the poll.

Oba Shotobi, who spoke on behalf of traditional rulers and other stakeholders, said: “We endorse President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to go for the second time. So, I move.”

Obasa said: “In view of the submissions made by all the stakeholders and motion just being moved by our Royal Majesty of Ikorodu, I do hereby second the motion of my colleagues from Lagos State House of Assembly and the people of Lagos State. I so second.”

Governor Sanwo-Olu said President Tinubu deserves to be supported for another term because he has fulfilled many of his campaign promises to Nigerians.

He said: “Our president, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is the 12th governor in Lagos State. We have listened to all of our stakeholders here today. And by unanimous decision taken by all of the representatives of the stakeholders on this stage…run for second term.

“I believe that this message will get to Aso Rock and will get to the nooks and crannies of this great country.”

The meeting was attended by all the political leaders, including members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) led by its chairman Prince Oluyole Olusi, former governors Babatunde Fashola and Akinwunmi Ambode, Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, member of the House Assembly, local government chairmen, political leaders and traditional rulers from all the five divisions in the state.

Ministers of Education Maruf Tunji Alausa, Trade and Industries Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy Mr. Wale Edun gave the scorecard of the President to justify the need for his continuation in office.

Hamzat also listed the achievements of the Sanwo-Olu Administration.

Senator Tokunbo Abiru (Lagos East), who spoke on behalf of the National Assembly Caucus, said: “We, in Lagos, the cradle of progressive politics, have long understood what visionary leadership looks like. As Governor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed

Tinubu transformed Lagos into a model of fiscal innovation, urban development, and inclusive governance.

“Today, as President, he is applying that same strategic clarity and courage to the entire federation. Therefore, on behalf of the good people of Lagos East Senatorial

District and in concert with the collective will of our great party,

“I proudly and unequivocally endorse President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for re-election in 2027.

We have seen his courage, we have felt the impact of his reforms, we are confident in the brighter future he is building for Nigeria. Mr. President, Lagos stands with you.”

APC National Secretary Senator Ajibola Basiru, who represented the National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, emphasised that why voter registration is important, getting registered voters to vote is more important.

Senators Wasiu Eshinlokun-Sanni (Lagos Central) and Idiat Adebule (lagos West) also attended.

Also at the meeting were Southwest APC leader Isaacs Kekemeke, James Odunmbaku, Tony Adefuye, Olumuyiwa Sosanya, Yomi Finnih,  former Deputy Governor Olufemi Pedro, Sen. Ganiyu Solomon, Olorunfunmi Basorun; James Faleke, Samuel Adedayo, Ademorin Kuye, National Youth Leader Dayo Israel, and party chairman and host, Cornelius Ojelabi.

Also, a special presentation on voter apathy and sanctity of election was made by Fasola.

Welcoming the stakeholders, Ojelabi urged the members to register enmass, promising that the party will give N1million to the unit, N5 million to the ward and N20 million to the local government with the highest number of registered voters.

He said the love the members have for the president, the governors, lawmakers and party chairmen can only be translated into victory if they register and vote.

Fashola hailed the ideological foundation of the party, saying: “We are progressives because we are determined to improve the human condition.”

He noted that while APC is waxing stronger, it has become difficult for the opposition to form a merger or colation.

The former governor applauded past party chairmen – Abiodun Ogunleye, and Oladele Ajomale, Tunde Balogun, and Ojelabi for effectively managing the party.

Fashola alerted party stalwarts to the reality of increasing voter registration and decreasing voter turnout on poll day, stressing that the 30 per cent turnout in 2023 is not worthy of applause.

He urged the chapter to interrogate why voters are decreasing in Lagos.

Fashola queried: “Are our policies and programmes resonating with the people? What does our reward system look like in the party? How do we network with ourselves?

Noting that hope is not lost, the former governor said “Renewed Hope should generate renewed enthusiasm.

Fashola said: “In APC states, where are the youth wings?

“To the extent that elections are man-made, they are susceptible to errors.

But, he said the errors should be reduced to the minimum.

He clarified that the stakeholders’ meeting was not a rally or campaign, adding that no serious strategy can also be discussed in the open.

The former governor pointed out that electoral actions can sometimes defile logic and rationality.

He stressed: “At any election season, people are looking for a political message and only the party that can send the message to the voters would triumph.”

Sanwo-Olu launches €410m EU-funded Omi-Eko project to boost water transport

    • Project to inject 70 hybrid electric ferries, develop 140km ferry routes, 25 modern terminals

OMI EKO, Lagos State’s long-anticipated inland waterways transportation project being developed in partnership with the European Union has transited from the blueprint to a reality.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Friday, formally launched the EUR 410 million waterways infrastructure project aimed at developing rapid transportation options that will address Lagosians’ mobility needs.

The project, divided into two components, will be implemented by the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), with the second component expected to be completed by 2030.

According to a statement by Gboyega Akosile, Special Adviser – Media and Publicity to the governor,  Lagos secured the funding for the project via the Global Gateway Initiative, the French Development Agency (AFD), the European Union (EU) and the European Investment Bank (EIB), which earmarked a subsidised loan of EUR 360 for the project.

The statement noted that the first component of the project covers channelisation, marking and dredging of 140km of ferry routes from which Lagos will be developing 15 priority ferry routes, including constructing high-quality infrastructure and facilities.

It added that the entire Inland Waterways Transport infrastructure comprises 25 ferry terminals and jetties with electric charging facilities to power e-vessels. There will be onshore depots for routine vessel maintenance, while land connections, including road surfacing, will be developed for other transport services connecting to ferry terminals.

Sanwo-Olu described the Omi-Eko launch as “historic”, noting that the event was not just an unveiling ceremony but a “bold statement” reaffirming Lagos’ frontline leadership in delivering a sustainable integrated water transportation ecosystem.

The Governor said exploring the full range of waterways transportation was a critical priority in his administration’s THEMES+ Agenda to transform mobility in the metropolis.

He said: “Every Lagosian knows the frustration of traffic. But a few will remember that Lagos began as a network of islands, knitted together by water. Long before bridges connected city, boats carried dreams, goods, and people across the lagoons. This water body nourishes us, shapes the State’s identity and now, it will carry us into the future.

“The OMI-EKO project is a comprehensive, future-oriented blueprint for sustainable mobility in Lagos. It merges technology, environmental stewardship and smart design to create waterways that are not just navigated, but optimised. This is the kind of innovative projects cities around the world are building to confront the twin challenges of urban population growth and climate change. Lagos is not waiting to catch up, we are setting the pace.”

The project, it was said, would reduce the negative impact of transport on health, while also reinforcing the State’s ability to fight climate change. It would promote inclusive, more resilient means of mobility.

The investment would bring decarbonised transportation in Lagos, reducing CO2 emissions by 41,000 tonnes yearly. It is expected to take 25,000 passengers yearly, saving travel time by 3hrs on each trip.

Sanwo-Olu said the investment’s objective was to make transportation through water seamless, reduce carbon footprint, the air cleaner and transform waterways from barriers of separation into corridors of opportunity.

The Governor said: “The launch of this project is more than a ceremonial curtain pull. It is a covenant with our people, our planet, and with future generations. With OMI-EKO, we are lifting not only boats but lives, businesses, and communities. We are signaling that Lagos is ready to lead Africa’s urban transition by this bold, sustainable, and inclusive investment.”

Former Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola, who created LASWA in 2008, graced the ceremony to witness the historic project.

The former Works and Housing Minister hailed the Sanwo-Olu administration for nurturing the agency to a viable global entity.

Fashola said the OMI-EKO project would further expand the scope of the State’s integrated transportation network, expressing optimism that the project would not stall, given the commitment of the European partners.

Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Seun Osiyemi, said the project would unlock the full potential of Lagos inland waterways, bringing the final piece of the State’s Integrated Multimodal Transportation System to life.

“OMI-EKO aligns with broader Lagos Transport Policy, which promotes sustainability, inclusivity, and innovation, while ensuring that transport solutions serve the people while protecting the environment. The project is not just about ferry operations; it is about empowering communities, creating jobs, easing congestion, and reducing our carbon footprint.”

Special Adviser to the Governor on Blue Economy, Mr. Damilola Emmanuel, who doubles as LASWA’s head, noted that the OMI-EKO project was no longer a dream, but a reality that would be changing the course of transportation in Lagos.

He said the 70 hybrid electric ferries that would be deployed after the completion of the project would reduce pollutants’ emissions and boost clean mobility

The LASWA boss said 20 existing jetties would be upgraded with modern terminals across 15 major water routes.

Emmanuel said: “In the first phase, there will be dredging and channelisation of 15 ferry routes for safer and faster transport. Part of the benefits include technology transfer and capacity development for key agencies in the waterways, especially LASWA.

“There will be funding for the informal boat sector under our Vessel Industry. This is how we build a water-based economy that works for all — from operators to passengers, from private investors to our citizens.“

French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Mr. Jean-Noel Barrot, said the project received complete support from EU partners, given the untapped opportunities in Lagos waterways.

The envoy said the OMI-EKO project represented the “best possible” example of what partnership could achieve for the benefit of the people, pointing out that the development was part of the success of the bilateral cooperation reached during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent visit to the French President Emmanuel Macron.

The EU Ambassador in Nigeria, Mr. Gautier Mignot, noted the partnership was an historical milestone for Lagos and EU member states, stressing that the investment would enhance life quality.

“This investment supports development of 12 strategic waterways corridors to enhance secure and efficient sustainable transport networks. Four of these corridors are located in West Africa. We are proud to be part of this project which showcases all the aspects of global gateway development,” Mignot said.

  • Lagos modernizes food system to combat population surge

Lagos modernizes food system to combat population surge

Lagos State is accelerating efforts to modernise its agricultural and food systems in response to the enormous demands of its rapidly expanding population, now estimated at 22 million. Projections from Statista, a global data and business intelligence platform, indicated that the city’s population could soar to 24.4 million by 2035.

Speaking yesterday at the grand finale of the World Food Day celebration in Lagos, Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Barr. ‘Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, reaffirmed the administration’s unwavering commitment to transforming the food system.

He described agriculture as “a driving force for innovation” and underscored the pivotal role of farmers as “key components in transforming the food system.”

As Lagos continues its steady march toward a sustainable food future, he reiterated that the government’s comprehensive strategy combines  infrastructure, technology, and private sector collaboration ,adding that this will help the administration ensureing that Africa’s largest megacity can feed its people, create jobs, and build resilience in the face of rapid population growth and global economic uncertainty.

The Governor explained that the state government is modernising its food infrastructure to meet new realities and ensure timely interventions across every stage of agricultural development. This, according to him, includes the supply of quality inputs, better coordination among key sectors, and efficient value-chain management designed to enhance productivity and sustainability.  He said the  government’s strategic focus is anchored on the establishment of an agro- logistics and marketing System that will serve as the backbone of Lagos’ food security strategy.

The integrated system,he explained. comprises the Lagos Central Food Security Systems and Logistics Hub (LCFSSLH), a network of Mid-Level Agro-Produce Hubs, and Last-Mile Food Distribution Outlets strategically located across the state.

Sanwo-Olu explained that the initiative aims to overhaul the entire food value chain — from production and handling to storage, distribution, and consumption — thereby making Lagos’ food ecosystem more resilient, efficient, and future-ready.

He emphasised that the project would ensure that residents have access to affordable, safe, and nutritious food while addressing inefficiencies in traditional food markets. “Our goalis to make Lagos a benchmark for sustainable urban food systems in Africa by reducing post-harvest losses, improving logistics, and creating jobs across all segments of the agricultural value chain,” the Governor said,

According to him, progress on  achieving this is ongoing  as construction of Phase One of the Lagos Central Food Security Systems and Logistics Hub at Ketu-Ereyun in Epe is nearing completion. The facility, when operational, he noted will serve as a key distribution and processing centre for major agricultural commodities coming into and out of Lagos. The government,he continued  is also fast-tracking work on two additional Mid-Level Agro-Produce Hubs expected to be completed before the end of the year — one at Abijo in Ibeju-Lekki and another at the Dairy Farm in Pen Cinema, Agege. “These facilities complement the already operational hub at Idi-Oro, Mushin, which has become a model for efficient produce aggregation and market access. In addition, construction work is ongoing on new hubs at Opebi in Ikeja and Bombata on Lagos Island, with plans underway to replicate the model in Ikorodu, Lekki, and Festac.” The Governor said the long-term vision is to establish at least one Mid-Level Agro-Produce Hub in every Local Government Area and Local Council Development Area across the state. This, he noted, would strengthen food distribution networks, reduce transportation costs, and ensure equitable access to food across all communities.

Highlighting the state’s achievements in agro-industrialisation, Sanwo-Olu described the Imota Rice Mill as a flagship project that continues to demonstrate the potential of large-scale agro-processing in driving food sufficiency and employment creation. The mill, one of the largest in sub-Saharan Africa,he mentioned  has already generated more than 2,000 direct and indirect jobs while empowering over 500 farmers in its supply network. “Through the mill’s out-grower scheme, rice paddy cultivation has expanded to more than 1,500 hectares, contributing significantly to Lagos’ goal of achieving self-sufficiency in staple food production and advancing economic diversification.”

The Governor also spotlighted the Eko Agro Mechanisation Programme (EKO AGROMECS), launched in February 2023, as a key driver of modernisation in the state’s farming sector. The initiative,he noted  leveraged digital technology through the “Tractor-On-The-Go” (TOG) platform — a mobile application that allows farmers to book tractors and mechanised equipment on demand, similar to ride-hailing services. The platform, according to him, has already facilitated the cultivation of over 3,000 hectares of farmland and directly benefited more than 500 smallholder farmers, making mechanisation accessible and affordable to those who need it most.

In her remarks, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, Ms. Abisola Olusanya, reaffirmed the state’s commitment to supporting farmers to increase productivity and improve their incomes. She said the government’s agricultural transformation plan aligns with this year’s World Food Day theme, “Hand in Hand for Better Food and a Better Future,” which calls for partnerships across governments, the private sector, development partners, and communities to promote sustainable agri-food systems and healthy diets.

Ms. Olusanya noted that food security challenges cannot be solved by government alone, urging stronger collaboration with the private sector and local communities to drive inclusive growth. “Our focusis not only to grow more food but to grow better food — food that nourishes, sustains, and empowers our people. We are committed to ensuring that every farmer in Lagos feels the impact of our investments in infrastructure, mechanisation, and market access,” ,” she said, “

In his goodwill message, a board member of the BATN Foundation, Mr. Yarub Al-Bahrani, reaffirmed the organisation’s dedication to empowering smallholder farmers and strengthening Nigeria’s agricultural ecosystem. He noted that  the foundation had invested over ₦4 billion in rural agriculture projects over the past 20 years, supporting more than 3,000 farmers with training and access to improved farming technologies. Through these initiatives,he said  an estimated 1.7 million people have benefited indirectly across Nigeria’s rural communities.

    The World Food Day celebration concluded with the presentation of awards recognising excellence across the agricultural value chain. These include the Best Agro Processor award- Farm Junction, Best Farm Estate – Erikorodo Poultry Farm; Best Farm Settlement -Ajara Farm Settlement;Best livestock Champion-Lagos Island Local government;Best Aquaculture  Champion- Apapa Local Government;

Group endorses Lagos’ new power distributors

A coalition of over 130 pan-Yoruba groups has thrown its weight behind the Lagos State Government’s decision to license two new electricity distribution companies, describing the move as a breakthrough in the state’s long struggle with poor power supply.

The coalition, under the umbrella of the Alliance for Yoruba Democratic Movements (AYDM), praised Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his deputy, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, for it called “the most important public-interest decision in Lagos since 1999”.

In a statement issued after its Executive Council meeting,  the AYDM said the registration of Excel Distribution Company and IE Energy Lagos Limited marks a “radical departure from years of corporate irresponsibility” by existing electricity distributors, Eko Electricity Distribution Plc and Ikeja Electric Plc.

“Governor Sanwo-Olu and his team have written their names in history,” the group declared, calling the move a new chapter in the quest for stable electricity in Lagos and the Southwest.

The AYDM urged both the state and federal governments to investigate the operators of the current electricity distribution companies for alleged “crimes against the people,” accusing them of negligence, extortion, and disregard for human life.

The group alleged that many Lagos residents had lost their lives and properties due to abrupt disconnections, power surges, and unsafe distribution practices.

“Many have died as a result of the recklessness of the existing DISCOs. Their record is worse than that of their predecessors, NEPA,” the statement read.

“These companies lack human conscience and are driven only by greed and cruelty.”

The coalition said it was documenting the alleged abuses of the electricity firms and would seek international sanctions against their management.

The AYDM commended the Lagos State Government for “standing with the people”, saying the decision would rescue businesses and industries from the brink of collapse.

“When electricity is inefficient, businesses fail, hospitals suffer, and the social economy crumbles. Millions of Lagosians have endured the arrogance and exploitation of operators who see citizens as commodities for profit,” said AYDM Secretary Popoola Ajayi and Mobilisation Director Chief Kunle Oshodi.

The coalition said it is ready to work with the newly licensed distributors to rebuild public trust in the power sector. It also encouraged the state government to invest in cleaner energy sources, including converting Lagos’ massive daily waste output into power.

The 130-member coalition includes the Oodua Nationalist Coalition (ONAC), Agbekoya, Yoruba Artisan and Traders Association (YATA), Nigerian Automobile Technicians Association (NATA – South West), Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC – New Era), South West Professional Forum (SOWPROF), Covenant Group (CG), Oodua Hunters Union (OHUN), and the South West Women Congress (SWECO), among others.

The AYDM described the outgoing DISCOs as “economic saboteurs” and warned the new licensees against repeating their mistakes.

“The Lagos people have suffered enough. The era of exploitation must end,” the statement concluded.

A notable northern policy group, the Arewa Think Tank (ATT), has concluded arrangements to hold its Nigeria Independence Day Anniversary Lecture on October 30, 2025, in Kaduna.

Among the prominent personalities expected at the event is Lagos State Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, who will deliver the keynote address on the theme: “65 Years of Nigeria’s Independence: The Journey So Far with the Renewed Hope Agenda in View.”

Other dignitaries expected to grace the occasion include the Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, Katsina State Governor, Dikko Umaru Radda, and several serving ministers from the Federal Executive Council.

According to a statement by the Convener of ATT, Muhammad Alhaji Yakubu, northern elders, technocrats, and captains of industry will also be in attendance.

Yakubu explained that the event, earlier scheduled for October 9, 2025, was postponed due to unforeseen circumstances beyond the control of the planning committee.

“We have now reached a concrete conclusion that the lecture will hold on the new date, October 30, 2025, at the same venue, the Auditorium Hall of Arewa House, Kaduna,” he said.

“We are grateful to our supporters and partners who have stood by us this far, and we sincerely apologise for any inconvenience the change of date might have caused our esteemed guests.”

Yakubu noted that President Bola Tinubu’s Independence Day address served as a clarion call for Nigerians to rekindle faith in the nation’s limitless potential.

He said the group aligns with the President’s message of hope, unity, and national rebirth, describing it as the moral compass needed to drive Nigeria’s development at this critical juncture.

The ATT, he added, firmly believes that national unity remains the foundation for Nigeria’s progress and collective advancement.
