Sanwo-Olu frowns at harassment of enforcement officials

Lagos Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu and other stakeholders in the built environment, have called for mutual respect and cooperation between government enforcement officers and members of the public.

Speaking at the 2025 stakeholders’ engagement on Physical Planning with the theme: “Planning Permit: The Rebirth”, organised by the Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority (LASPPPA) on Friday, the Governor stressed that harassment or assault of enforcement officials on duty is counterproductive and detrimental to the orderly growth of Lagos.

Sanwo-Olu, represented by his Deputy Chief of Staff, Mr. Sam Egube, maintained that physical planning officers are carrying out statutory responsibilities in line with approved regulations and therefore deserve due courtesy and cooperation.

He cautioned residents against verbal or physical attacks on officials and urged aggrieved members of the public to channel complaints through established government platforms. “Civility, dialogue, and adherence to due process are the hallmarks of a functional society that seeks sustainable development,” he said.

The Governor further assured that the engagement reflected government’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and the protection of residents and officials in building a more resilient, well-planned Lagos.

The Lagos State Head of Service, Mr. Olabode Agoro, emphasized that the administration is working tirelessly to bequeath a better Lagos to future generations.

He urged residents to uphold law and order, and treat government officials with the respect they deserve.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Olumide Oluyinka, explained that the forum was a follow-up to the 2024 Physical Planning Summit held at Eko Hotels and Suites, where stakeholders underscored the importance of public sensitization and engagement on physical planning.

Oluyinka assured that despite the frequent challenges faced by LASPPPA officials during enforcement, the government would not relent in ensuring that no physical development takes place in the State without necessary approvals.

Special Adviser to the Governor on eGIS and Planning Matters, Dr. Olajide Babatunde, represented by the Permanent Secretary for Urban Development, Arc. Gbolahan Oki, commended the General Manager of LASPPPA, Tpl. Kehinde Osinaike, and his team for their efforts.

He however lamented the poor attitude of some property owners and professionals toward planning laws, calling for a change in behavior.

“Built professionals must discourage lawlessness by advising property owners appropriately and respecting their own professional boundaries,” he said, urging the public not to view demolitions of illegal structures emotionally, but rather as actions taken in the collective interest of society.

Delivering a goodwill message on behalf of the Oba of Lagos, the Bajulaiye of Lagos, Chief Ayodele Oyekan, appealed for public support of government’s planning regulations.

He stressed that harassment of officers is unjust, considering they act strictly in line with the law. He encouraged aggrieved property owners to use complaint mechanisms or seek redress through the Lagos State House of Assembly, instead of resorting to self-help.

“To live in Lagos, you must abide by the laws of the State,” he emphasised.

Sanwo-Olu reaffirms commitment to judicial reforms

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has reaffirmed his commitment to justice and judicial reforms in the state.

Sanwo-Olu said this at the 2025/2026 new legal year service which was held at the Cathedral Church of Christ, Marina in Lagos.

The governor was represented by his wife, Dr. Claudia Sanwo-Olu.

Sanwo-Olu, in his good will message, commended the judiciary for its resilience, dedication, and reforms that had enhanced access to justice.

He praised the judiciary for introducing practice directions on non-custodial sentencing and improving case management through digitalisation of court processes.

Sanwo-Olu said his government had invested in judicial infrastructure, including the construction of a new commercial court at Tapa, Lagos Island, to ease business operations, and residential apartments for magistrates and legal officers to support their welfare.

“These reforms and investments will further strengthen the administration of justice, boost public confidence, and promote Lagos as a hub for commerce and innovation.

“This thanksgiving serves as a reminder of the divine calling of leaders, lawyers, and judges to serve with humility, wisdom, and integrity,” he said

The governor further congratulated the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Kazeem Alogba, for successfully steering the judiciary in the past legal year, while also appreciating judges, magistrates, and members of the bar for their service.

    In a related development, the

Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat has urged Judges not to be depressed by ignorant criticisms but should remain steadfast in righteousness.

He stated this yesterday while speaking at a special service to mark the opening of the new legal year 2025/2026 held at the Lagos Central Mosque, Nnamdi Azikiwe street, Lagos.

The event brought together top government officials, judicial officers, and members of the bar and bench.

The event was marked with solemn reflections, prayers, and renewed commitments to the cause of justice.

    Dr. Hamzat lamented what he

described as a “season of ignorance” in the country where unverified opinions from social media content creators are increasingly shaping public discourse on sensitive matters, including law and governance.

“Everybody has suddenly become an expert.

“Somebody with a Twitter feed and 200,000 followers now pontificates as an economist or a legal mind. That is dangerous. People criticize judgments they have not even read, and this trend undermines respect for the judiciary. ”

He stressed the need for Nigerians to appreciate the work of judges and the sanctity of the rule of law, warning against the mob-style condemnation of judicial pronouncements.

In his own message, the Chief Judge of Lagos State, Justice Kazeem Alogba, commended the unwavering support of the state government to the judiciary.

He described Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his deputy as strong pillars of the administration of justice in Lagos.

“Fear God, and you will serve without fear or favor,” Justice Alogba charged.

“We assure Lagosians that the judiciary will remain committed to dispensing justice impartially, resisting every form of temptation, and ensuring that the rule of law continues to thrive.”

He also paid tribute to retired judges and promised that the bench in Lagos State will continue to uphold its sacred responsibility to the people.

Delivering the lecture at the service, Professor Saheed Timehin emphasized that justice is not merely a legal process but a sacred duty of immense moral and spiritual weight.

According to him, the judiciary must remain a bastion of fairness, accountability, and transparency if Nigeria is to build a just and corruption-free society.

“The judiciary is the conscience of the legal system and the last hope of the common man.

“To sit on the bench is to shoulder responsibility not just to man but to God. Every judgment and every ruling has eternal weight. Justice must be unambiguous—free from political influence, economic bias, or social pressure.”

He warned that compromise of justice for fear, favor, or bribery amounts to betrayal, not only of the Constitution but of divine trust.

The new legal year service ended with prayers for the judiciary, Lagos State, and the nation, with stakeholders reaffirming their dedication to truth, fairness, and service to humanity.

  • Lagos intensifies drive to cut malaria to pre-elimination level says Sanwo-Olu

Lagos intensifies drive to cut malaria to pre-elimination level says Sanwo-Olu

Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, on Thursday reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to reducing malaria prevalence to below one per cent.

Sanwo-Olu gave the assurance at the mid-term review meeting of the IMPACT Project and the Pathway to Malaria Pre-Elimination and Digitisation Programme held at Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island.

According to him, the state is on course to shift from a high-burden to a pre-elimination stage.

He said the initiative, launched on March 4, was designed to turn hope into tangible results by deploying evidence, technology and collaboration to combat malaria.

According to the governor, funding from the World Bank, Islamic Development Bank and other partners has enabled Lagos to expand targeted activities at key points of care and strengthen its monitoring capacity.

A major plank of the strategy, he noted, “is digitisation including real-time reporting systems and digital platforms in public and private facilities to close information gaps that slow diagnosis, reporting and response.

“Through partnerships with innovative companies and the rollout of digital pharmacy and facility software.

“We are enhancing diagnostic accuracy, standardising case management and integrating private providers into the state surveillance system,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu said malaria continued to impose huge social and economic costs on Lagos residents through lost school days, diminished wages and pressure on the health system.

Hence the drive to cut prevalence to pre-elimination levels by improving diagnostics, ensuring consistent treatment and engaging communities.

He identified accountability, scale and quality, and community ownership as the three key focused areas of the review.

On accountability, the governor called for strict adherence to rapid diagnostic testing and timely reporting by private pharmacies and patent medicine vendors.

On scale and quality, he stressed the need to extend interventions to hard-to-reach areas without compromising standards, through training, supervision and integration with the Ilera Eko health-financing platform to guarantee affordable access to care.

” I urge households and communities to play their part by eliminating mosquito breeding sites, testing promptly and trusting the health system.

” Supported by effective communication, community health workers and collaboration with traditional leaders, market groups and schools,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu commended development partners including the World Bank, Islamic Development Bank, WHO, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Others are, National Malaria Elimination Programme, Maisha Meds, Society for Family Health, private hospitals, pharmacies and community providers for their support.

He also applauded the Ministry of Health, Lagos State Health Management Agency (LASHMA) and the Institute of Human Virology Nigeria (IHV) for progress made so far.

The  governor, however, urged them to sustain the momentum by drawing up a solid operational plan for the next quarter.

The governor appealed to residents to contribute to the fight by using treated nets, getting rid of stagnant water and testing before taking anti-malarials.

According to him, such individual actions will help achieve a malaria-free Lagos.

“Let us commit to being transparent with our data, ensuring quality care in both public and private sectors and empowering our communities.

“Together with government, partners, health workers, private sector and community leaders, we can make Lagos a shining example of effective malaria control,”he said.

Sanwo-Olu urges greater women, youth participation in politics

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has challenged women and youths to take bold steps into active politics and governance, saying their involvement is critical to Nigeria’s future.

Sanwo-Olu, represented by his wife, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, gave the charge at the APC Lagos State Women’s Summit held yesterday with the theme “Arise, Aspire, Ascend.”

The governor said women had long been the engine of grassroots mobilisation and party strategy but must now convert that strength into leadership and policymaking roles.

“As women, we must arise from complicity, aspire to take our rightful place in leadership, and ascend to new levels of impact,” he declared.

He added that youths, particularly first-time voters, must be drawn into the political process early. “If 4,000 of us each bring 20 people to register, that’s 80,000 new voices for democracy. This is how we multiply our impact,” he noted.

The summit, which attracted over 4,000 participants, focused on mobilising women and young people ahead of the 2027 elections.

Sanwo-Olu lamented Lagos’ low voter turnout in 2023, where only 762,000 out of seven million registered voters cast their ballots.

“Gen Z, you have work to do. This time, we expect every young person not only to register but to vote and defend their votes,” she said, charging participants to ensure at least 20 new voters are registered each before the next polls.

Minister of Women Affairs, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, declared that Nigerian women will unite to endorse President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term in 2027, citing his unprecedented commitment to women’s empowerment and youth development.

The minister said women are the “heartbeat of this administration” and pledged that, this time, Nigerian women will speak with one voice to demand their rightful place in governance.

“Collectively, we are going to endorse Mr. President, and we’re going with a shopping list, because 26 years into democracy, we still have no female governor, only four female senators out of 109, and just 3.7% of elective offices occupied by women. But things are about to change,” she declared.

Highlighting Tinubu’s record, Ibrahim said the President has launched the Renewed Hope Social Impact Programme, targeting women, children, families, and the vulnerable across eight thematic areas, including agriculture and market women support.

She also revealed that for the first time, the Women Affairs Ministry has secured N2.5 billion for small and medium enterprises and another N2 billion for women in agriculture.

The minister stressed that true empowerment must be economic, insisting that “when women have money, they can run for office, send their children to school, fight malnutrition, and reduce gender-based violence. Nobody beats a woman who is financially independent.”

She urged women and youths, particularly first-time voters, to register and collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), warning that political participation must go beyond attendance at rallies. “As politicians, we must make the vote count.
