Wike: SARS behind Rivers kidnapping, robbery

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike yesterday alleged that most of the kidnapping  and robbery in the state are perpetrated by operatives  of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

The governor said the Rivers State Special Anti-robbery Squad (SARS)  has been indicted by an official police signal.

Addressing reporters at the Government House, Wike claimed that the SARS commander was planted in the state to sabotage  the security architecture and create an atmosphere  of fear.

The governor said the criminal activities of SARS operatives were uncovered by the Inspector General of Police X Squad, Abuja, deployed in the state, adding that the squad foiled the attempted kidnap of Mr Azumana Ifeanyi on Monday at the GRA, Port Harcourt.

The official police signal provided by the governor, with the title: “Police Wireless Message ” and Reference DT0: 121030/09/2017 —INGENPOL-X-FHQ ABUJA TO-INGENPOL SEC ABUJA, noted that the squad received a distress call on the kidnap of Ifeanyi  and  swung into action.

According to the signal, they met three SARS operatives robbing and a gun duel ensued. The operatives allegedly took Ifeanyi to a Fidelity Bank ATM where they compelled him to withdraw N500,000 as ransom.

The governor said one of the SARS operatives was killed, while Inspector Justice Nyeche, who led the IGP team, was injured.

Wike said: “Most of the kidnapping and armed robbery taking place in this state are done by men of SARS.  They use exhibit vehicles to operate. As the chief security officer of the state, you complain, but they choose to play politics with crime.

“They fight crime in some state, but they refuse to fight crime in Rivers State. We are done with the elections, but they are using SARS to create insecurity in the state.

“As I speak with you, they will deny. But the SARS  operative, who was killed, was among those who raided the Rivers East Senatorial District Collation Centre. This man can be identified in the video as one of those who invaded the collation centre with Fakorede.

“I have never seen a country where they politicise crime. It is obvious that they want to give the impression that Rivers State is unsafe.  They want to instil fear preparatory to declaring during the elections that they is so much killing.

“Authorities  deliberately trying to destroy a state and you  want the people to be happy. I will no longer write. Now is the time  to take my case to the public, for the world to know what is happening.”

The governor said his administration has invested more than any other in security logistics, yet the police work against  the state.

Sad Police encounter: ‘I am not proud to be a Nigerian right now’

Like a Facebook user, many Nigerians weep every day so bitterly for “a lawless country like ours, citizens are not in any way save in the hands of this disguised rogues claiming to be personnel of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS)” without forgetting the regular Police personnel on the streets.

This Facebook user was responding to the painful account of another Facebook user, Baggy Baggz, a Nigerian based in Pretoria, South Africa, in the hands of the men of SARS during a visit to Delta State, Nigeria.

“With the outcome of everyday daylight brutalities and robbery from the high ups of this organisation to the helpless populace is too much. I dislike the so-called devil in carnets call police with passion, so sorry my brother man in narrating such ugly incident and thank God for what has happened,’ the User said in his comment.

His account (edited for typo errors) below:

    At this moment I AM NOT PROUD TO BE A NIGERIAN, and we all are not anywhere near being safe with any of these so-called “law enforcement”. Please my experience below;

I’m Damilola Adeyanju. On 13/04/2017 a couple of my friends and I travelled to Warri, Delta state for a family friend’s wedding to hold on the 15/04/2017. We decided to stay for some extra days after the wedding to have a feel of Delta state since we hardly leave Lagos normally, and so we left for Lagos on 18/04/2017.

That fateful morning around 6:00 a.m, we (6 of us) got to Greener Line Park and chattered a 7 seater bus. At about 7:45 a.m we took off, got to Sapele express by 8:30 thereabout, we got stopped by SARS officials for stop and search. We all came down and were searched. They then proceeded to our bags where they found a laptop belonging to one of us. They asked for the receipt and the owner told them he’s had it for years and doesn’t have it on him after which they grabbed his phone from him.

Getting to me, I also had my laptop and they requested for the receipt as well, I said I don’t have it on me, then he (SARS guy) called one of his colleagues to take the laptop to their patrol pickup truck and told us to go stand by the truck.

TRENDING: Owoseni to DPOs: Leave Lagos if you like bribe

Another Greener Line bus was stopped and they alighted 4 other guys from it, told them to walk towards us and we all get into the back of the truck. We asked why and the SARS pilot shouted ‘obey before complain’. So they got in and drove us away. Bystanders quickly told the Greener Line drivers and the rest of my friends to go after us, because the so-called SARS people could take us to a bush and probably shoot us and go with our belongings.

Fortunately, my phone was silent and undetected, so my friends were able to reach me and I quietly told them we were still on the same express. The drivers sped up and caught up with us. After driving for about 15mins, we eventually got to a police station (OKUOVO).

The got us out of the truck, walked us into the station, pushed us forcefully behind the counter and told us to sit on the floor. While all these was happening we still didn’t know our offence. The next thing we saw was them bringing out statement forms and called one of the other 4 guys to the front, stripped him off his shirt and was told to sit on the floor. The officer started asking the guy questions and writing the statement for the guy, and at some point started whipping him with wire.

The guy’s back tore and started bleeding from the beating. Out of fear and pain, the guy was saying different stories. I was just sitting on the floor looking at my friend like “o boy I no go take this beating oh, we go die here today if e touch me with that wire.”

RELATED: DPO shoots man dead, injure others in Lagos

Next thing the guy was cuffed and brought back behind the counter. I quickly sent my mom a text message to send me the Commissioner of Police for Lagos state’s number. She called and asked why, I stylishly picked and told her what was up. She panicked and I had to cut the call, she eventually sent the number but unfortunately, myself and my friend were next.

My friend was told to sit on the floor I was told to stand, it was two different officers interrogating us, the statement form was brought out and the officer insisted on writing my friend’s statement. My friend refused but was threatened so he had no choice but to sit back on the floor because they were armed. So I quickly grabbed the pen from the other officer that I was going to write mine myself.

I was asked for my profession and all and I wrote it all down. I’m an Aqua-scaper (construction of aquariums and landscaping). They started asking who could identify my business and I should write the names of my clients, I’m like that has got nothing to do with what’s going on here… They asked for proof of my work I told them I have pictures on my phone showed them, even told them I just came back to Nigeria for this wedding that I’m undergoing a course in South Africa and I showed them proof and he was like they should cuff me, that I’m a cultist and my friend is a kidnapper.

Long story short, we got handcuffed until my friends (the bride’s) mum came to our rescue. The cuffs were later taken off but then they said we were in possession of stolen phones and laptops that they won’t be given back to us until we provide the receipts. I got angry and told him I will provide the receipt on the spot if he can provide that of his phone and he said I was very stupid to question an officer. My friend’s mum cried and begged but fell on deaf ears.

ALSO: Our Girls; VIO dead? Good. Now Police Corruption

I had sneaked the number my mum sent on a piece of paper and passed it to my friends outside. The “SARS” officials eventually drove off with the other cuffed boys still with our laptops and phones. I called the commissioner and he spoke to an officer of that police station (OKUOVO station) and the officer said he doesn’t know the officers that arrested us before he too ran away from the station on his okada, so it was just us left in an empty police station.

We waited till about 6:00 p.m and eventually had to leave cos it was getting dark in the middle of nowhere. We went back to Warri.

On 19/04/2017, at about 6:05 a.m we were back at the Greener Line park to get the bus to take us back to the OKUOVO police station, on getting there it was empty. We decided to head to the same spot we were stopped and eventually got to find them there looking for more preys.

I got out of the bus, called the Assistant Commissioner of Police and approached BISHOP (that’s the only info I could get of him), the leader of the “SARS gang”. He said he didn’t want to talk to anybody and I delivered the message to the Commissioner. He heard me say that, grabbed the phone from me and cut the call. He slammed the phone on my chest and started pushing and kicking me, that I should leave.

While walking away he came towards my back and hit me at the back of my head, as I turned to face him he began slapping me for no reason. At that point I had enough of it, I got angry and raised my hands in self-defense to block the hits then I remembered he had a gun and just walked away.

They eventually got some more innocent people to prey on and drove them to another police station (MOSOGAR) in Delta state. We drove behind them, on getting there I didn’t come down from the bus, my friends and the manager of Greener Line went in with them. They were asked to pay N80,000 before our phones and laptops were returned to us.

I do understand that in life, bad things happen sometimes. What I don’t understand, however, is why as a citizen of this country, I experienced this not at the hands of robbers or thugs, but at the hands of uniformed policemen who my tax cloth and buy arms for.

I am sad, and do hope that perhaps somebody reading this somewhere will recognise these guys and help identify them, not for revenge, but so other unsuspecting helpless citizens don’t get to experience such too at the hands of their supposed policemen “friends”.

Besides the above account, The Nation wishes to inform our esteemed readers that the Nigeria Police is trying hard to rid the Force of several bad eggs in the system. In this effort, the Police introduced the Complaint Unit which has been very active and helpful in the fight against corrupt practices in the Force.

  • SARS operative arrested for Tochukwu’s murder

The team leader of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Kano State Police Command, who shot and killed a patent medicine dealer, Tochukwu A. Iro, in Kano on Wednesday has been arrested and is currently being interrogated on the incident.

About 200 Igbo youths afterwards staged a protest over Tochukwu’s murder.

An eyewitness who would not be identified told reporters told reporters on Thursday in Kano that Tochukwu was allegedly killed at about 12 noon, Wednesday on France Road, opposite First Baptist Church in the Sabon Gari area of the state. “On Wednesday afternoon, at about 12 noon, we saw Tochukwu walking along the road. As he tried to negotiate Illaro Road, two armed police men walked up to him. They came in a car with tinted screen. They stopped the car close to First Baptist Church, crossed the road and ordered Tochukwu to stop.

“When he stopped, there was a mild argument between him and the two armed men; and one of them, who was wearing a Kaftan, brought out a branded police rifle and shot him. When traders around started shouting, the same man shot into the air and bundled the victim into a waiting tricycle, while his colleague crossed the road, dashed into the car and zoomed off.”

However, at an emergency press conference organised by the Igbo Traders Association (ITA) at the Abubakar Rimi Market, chairman of the traders, Emmanuel C. Amadi, who was visibly disturbed by the gruesome murder, insisted that justice must be done. He told reporters that Tochukwu, aged 40, who hailed from the Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State, died at Murtala Muhammad Specialist hospital on Thursday afternoon after a failed medical operation.

Chief Amadi said:  “On that Wednesday, I was attending a market Board meeting with General Manager of Abubakar Rimi Market, security chiefs and other stakeholders when I received a call that one of our members was shot by the police along France Road. I immediately told the market management and they asked me to get more details over the incident. We made arrangements to ensure that he was taken to hospital for treatment. Around 9:00 p.m. on that Wednesday, I put a call across to Murtala Muhammad Hospital and I was told that he was responding to treatment.

“On Thursday morning, I called the hospital and was told that he was taken to the theatre for operation; but it was so sad that this afternoon (Thursday), we got the news that he could not survive the gunshot. As I am speaking to you now, Tochukwu is dead. I have his file here and I can attest to the fact that he was a peace-loving man. We have never known him as a criminal and that is why we wondered why such an innocent man could be killed in such a gruesome manner.

  • Another judge kidnapped in Kogi, orderly killed

Another judge kidnapped in Kogi, orderly killed

His police orderly was reportedly killed during the incident which occurred along the Itakpe – Kuroko road Sunday evening while they were returning to Lokoja.

The judge was said to have travelled to his village over the weekend and was returning to Lokoja when the suspected gunmen stopped his car along the Okene – Itakpe bye pass in Okehi local government.

It was learnt that the suspected kidnappers mowed down the police orderly immediately while the driver of the judge received bullet wounds, before their victim was taken to unknown destination.

A source said that the late police orderly made to prevent the kidnappers from abducteding the judge when he was shot by one of the abductors, and his service pistol taken away.

The remains of late police orderly said the source, was deposited at the morgue in an undisclosed hospital, and the driver who was said to have received several gun shots is receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital in Lokoja.

Confirming the incident, the information officer, Kogi State Ministry Justice , Mr. Saqeeb Saeed, said that the Customary Court of Appeal judge was kidnapped along Okene – Kuroko bye pass on Sunday evening.

Efforts made to confirm the killing of the police orderly proved abortive as calls made to the Kogi Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Wllly Aya was not responded to.

Similarly, it was gathered that two yet-to-be identified women coming from Abuja were abducted along the Obajana – Okene road last friday

It would be recalled that a forthnight ago, the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Solomon Arase deployed a detachment of Special Anti-robbery Squad from Abuja, while apatrol helicopter was stationed in Lokoja to combat the menace of kidnappers in Kogi State.

However, barely one week after the federal SARS operatives returned to their base, activities of the abductors appeared to have spiked in Kogi State again.

SARS arrests council chair, others for ‘gunrunning’

The Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Ebonyi State Police Command yesterday arrested a local government chairman for alleged cultism, gunrunning and other criminal activities.

Though police spokesman George Okafor, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), said he was not aware of the arrest, a top police officer told our reporter in confidence that the council chief was arrested at his home, where arms were allegedly recovered early yesterday.

The council chairman, it was gathered, was arrested in company of some suspected criminals, especially thugs, said to be wielding dangerous weapons.

The arrest comes ahead of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ward congress, raising suspicions that the chairman was recruiting thugs to unleash mayhem during the congress.

The council chairman was reportedly arrested in connection with some allegations, ranging from his alleged involvement in cultism and other criminal activities, since he assumed office.

Some residents of the local government area were said to have died in curious circumstances.

The suspect was said to be in company of some men suspected to be members of a secret cult when he was arrested.

Two AK-47 rifles and one empty magazine were allegedly recovered from them.

Other items allegedly recovered from the suspects included one locally-made pistol, which uses AK-47 ammunition, two pump action rifles and one double-barrelled gun.

SARS Commander Daniel Peter declined comments on the matter, saying he was not permitted to speak on the incident.

He directed our reporter to the command’s spokesman.

“In a case like this, I am not permitted to give you any information. You can get any information you want from the PPRO; he is the right person to brief you as a journalist… But when you get to the PPRO, you will get all the information you want.”

Police Commissioner Peace Ibekwe Abdalah refused to confirm or deny the report when our reporter called her on phone.

She said: “I cannot confirm the story. But I know that the police are carrying out series of operations to rid the state of criminal elements. Those people may be helping the police in their investigations.”

The suspect’s mobile phone was switched off when our reporter attempted to contact him for comments.

Police unveil new uniform for SARS operatives

Following public outcry on the shabby dressing as well as impersonation of operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Sqaud (SARS), the Nigeria Police Friday unveiled a uniformed dress code for the unit.

The new uniform, which has unique numbers for the Federal SARS as well as the various state, was introduced in furtherance of efforts by the Inspector General of Police ( IGP ) Solomon Arase to emplace an accountable police.

While unveiling the new kit at the police headquarters in Lagos, the Commissioner Fatai Owoseni said the force has recorded negative image through the actions and conducts of personnel in SARS.

Aside professionalising SARS by splitting it into the Striking and Investigation departments to curb excesses of the operatives, Owoseni said the IGP introduced the set of uniforms so that SARS operatives can be identified.

“The IGP came up with the outfits in which the public can easily identify and recognise SARS operatives when in operation. He wants to give them decent identity by taking them out of the practice of just wearing anything, thereby checking impersonation.

“Henceforth, any police person displaying just black t-shirt and claim to be personnel of SARS is not. This uniform will also help check the excesses of illegal policemen. We are improving our policing method to be public friendly,” said Owoseni.

  • Lagosians are timid, says suspected robber

Lagosians are timid, says suspected robber

A suspected armed robber arrested by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) Thursday described Lagos residents as timid and fearful.

19-year-old Olaoluwa Saheed who is currently being detained at the Special Anti-Robbery Sqaud (SARS) headquarters in Ikeja, stated that he has been having a field day in traffic robbery because Lagos residents tremble at the sight of anything that looks like a gun.

Saheed was arrested with a locally made short gun at about 10pm on Tuesday by a decoy of RRS personnel who have been on his trail for about two weeks.

It was gathered that some policemen were deployed undercover to man the Surulere- Costain-Alaka axis following incessant attacks on motorists by in-traffic armed robbers.

Saheed, whose gang was said to have terrorised the area with motorcycle, was caught while trying to dispossess a woman of her handbag and mobile phone.

As he was about to rob the victim, the undercover policemen were said to have swooped on him, prompting him to run into a moving commercial bus.

The police, it was learnt chased the bus and eventually caught it, at which point he was arrested, searched and the gun found on him.

Narrating how they operate, Saheed said that they usually drive their motorcycle when there is traffic, monitoring motorists whose bags and valuables can be seen.

“We drive through when there is traffic and monitor our targets. We look out for bags, phones and jewelries and once we see anyone we think we will get something reasonable, we will go and turn and come back there.

“Then, my second will double cross the person or vehicle, while I jump down from the motorcycle and point a gun on the victim.

“We have been very successful before because Lagosians are timid. They flee at the sight of anything even if it is toy gun. We have not been having issues and we have been making money.

“But on Tuesday, while I was about to rob the woman who was driving a Toyota Camry, three people came and caught me. I was surprised because ordinarily everybody will escape and abandon the victim but those who caught me pursued me even when I entered a bus and they eventually stopped the bus and caught me.

“It was later I knew that they were policemen,” he said.

The suspect who claimed he used to be a bus conductor,  said that he abandoned the motorboy job because it was not paying well.

  • Another victim dies of gun wounds

Another victim dies of gun wounds

ANOTHER person reportedly shot by uniformed men at Majidun near Ikorodu, Lagos, last week, has died, bringing to three number of casualties.

Daniel was said to have died in hospital yesterday.

One person was shot dead at the scene last Wednesday; the second died in hospital last weekend.

Yesterday, the army began a probe of the incident, promising to get to the root of it.

Two soldiers in uniform and a man in mufti were at the General Hospital, Ikeja, Lagos to see Alhaji Aminu Salis, an engineer.

Salis and his wife were among those reportedly shot by the uniformed men.

His wife has since been discharged.

Salis told The Nation that the late Daniel lived beside Oando Filling Station on Isawo Road, Ikorodu.

“One of my neighbours called this morning (yesterday) to inform me about the death of another person that was shot. He gave his name as Daniel. The late Daniel and two others are the ones we know that have lost their lives in this crazy incident. You can imagine the number of people that may have lost their lives that we don’t know yet. Many people were carrying wounds to different places after the gun shots; some moved to the direction of Ijede, some to Odogunyan, another set to Ikorodu proper,” he said.

Salis, an engineer, told The Nation that policemen who checking his vehicle wondered how he survived the gun shots.

“After carefully looking through the car, the policemen told me to thank God for still being alive. They told me that the gunmen are professional shooters. Besides that, you remember they said the bullets in my car belonged to the military,” he said.

Told that the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 81 Division in Lagos, Maj. Gen. Tanmi Dibi, said the gunmen were not soldiers, Salis asked him to send his men to collect some of the bullets from the Owode-Onirin Police Station for verification.

“We are in a modern world whereby when you see a bullet, you know where to trace it to. Let the GOC do that; that will aid their investigation,” he said.

The GOC, he said, directed his men to get first hand information on the incident, adding: “I told them how it happened and they promised to get to the root of the matter. It is a good omen for the military to have sent their men here (hospital); they have once again proven that the military institution remains disciplined and would not allow any individual or group to denigrate it,” he said.

Lagos State police spokesman, Kenneth Nwosu, a Deputy Superintendent, yesterday said, no arrest had been made. He said the police would do all they could to unveil the gunmen.

The case, Nwosu said, has been transferred to the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS).
