Police kill two armed robbers, arrest three

Operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Ogun State Police Command, have killed two suspected armed robbers in Epe area of Lagos State.

The operatives engaged the gang in a fierce gun duel early  yesterday. Three of the suspected robbers who were eventually arrested, sustained bullet wounds.

It came barely a day after anti-robbery operatives attached to Mowe Division killed one robber during a gun battle with members of his gang near the Redemption Youth Camp along the Lagos/Ibadan Expressway. A snatched vehicle was said to have been recovered from them.

Police said one of the gang members, Ahmed Yusuff, was arrested on April 25 at Dalemo-Otta in Ogun State after snatching a Mercedes Benz ML Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) from the owner.

It was gathered that Yusuff, in the course of police investigation, agreed to lead the SARS operatives to their hideout at Epe in Lagos State. However, when operatives arrived the hideout, there was resistance from his gang members, leading to a shoot out.

Ogun Police Command’s spokesman Muyiwa Adejobi, a Deputy Superintendent (DSP), gave the names of the arrested suspects as Adeyinka Olajuwon, Isiaka Salawu, and Jumoke Odukoya.

He said that others escaped with bullet wounds, adding that efforts were in top gear to apprehend them. Adejobi said one assault 06 rifle marked 07003808, two magazines loaded with 18 rounds of ammunition, three cut-to-size single-barrel pistols, two cut-to-size double barrel guns, 10 live cartridges, one axe and some assorted charms were recovered from the suspects.

Commissioner of Police, Ikemefuna Okoye praised the teams for a good job done, particularly the follow-up on the case.

He also urged the public, particularly medical practitioners, to be on the alert for the fleeing injured robbers who may come to them for treatment.

Okoye also directed the officer-in-charge of SARS, Ogun State, Mohammed Tijani, a Superintendent, to ensure the arrest of fleeing suspects  with their arms recovered.

The police chief assured Ogun people of adequate protection of their lives and property in every  nook and cranny of the state.

  • ‘My wife told me to stop armed robbery‘

‘My wife told me to stop armed robbery‘

A two-man armed robbery gang who claimed that they specialize in vandalizing cars, Ifeanyi Nwaigwu aka Akunesi Obike, 32, and one Vincent Emeguem, 34, have been arrested by operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) Lagos State Police Command.

Narrating his involvement in the armed robbery and vandalisation that brought about his arrest the leader of the gang Ifeanyi said, “I am a holder of Ordinary National Diploma (OND) in Business Administration from Nakede Polytechnic 2000-2001 session.

“After my OND my uncle (name withheld) took me to Aspanda Market in Trade Fair Complex Lagos, to start business. I later got married to one Angela and was doing well in business. To show that I was doing well my people, the Community Association of my town in Lagos gave me a title Akunesiobike.

“I owned a big shop in Aspanda and was selling motor gaskets, and other motor spare parts. I used to get N3,000 every day and with it I used to take good care of my wife.

“My trouble started when one Prince Martins became my friend at Aspanda. The way Martins get bundles of money and the way he spent money as if he was printing money or working in Mint of the Central Bank made me to beg him to teach me the way to get rich. He taught me how to vandalise cars but I never participated in any armed robbery because I swore not to use guns to fend for myself to avoid spilling blood accidentally.”

On how the gang vandalise cars he said, “we normally carry out vandalization operation at midnight when residents are deep asleep. We sneak into the compounds and go straight to where the car is parked. We use screw driver to open the door through the window glass. When we get enough motor parts from say three to four cars we package them and send to Ladipo Spare Parts market as fairly used motor parts (tokunbo parts).

“When I had problem in Aspand because my gang was wanted by police for an offence which I did not participate in (vandalization and armed robbery) I ran away into hiding. The police later locked up my shop in Aspanda. When I solved that problem and the police stopped looking for me I vowed not to join the gang or any gang again, my wife also begged me not to continue as she ashamed as people look at her as the wife of a criminal. I respected my wife’s wish but I lost control when I had no money to continue the gasket business in Aspanda.

“Even people who used to give me goods on credit started avoiding me fearing that I may not be able to give them their money after selling the gaskets I collected on credit. In that frustrated position I relocated to Ladipo market and started hustling (Ozo afia). It was this hustling that made me to know Vincent. I used to get enough money from the hustling like N4,000, N3,000 daily.

“Some of the hustlers who get more money were involved in one crime or the other. Some were into vandalization of cars while some steal goods from the owner when he brings out the goods for sale. For instance, when a container is opened they (hustlers) will follow traders who have money to go and buy spare parts. As they are pricing and buying we will be pricing and stealing some parts. Where the owner has many boys who check traders who steal parts, we avoid such places because we don’t want to be caught and sent out of the market by the market union who would not like to see a thief in the market.

“After the close of market I normally go to Vincent’s beer parlour to relax. It was in his beer parlour that he saw how I was spending money and he invited me to join to form a two man vandalization gang.

“We don’t use gun. We use taped pipe and it looks like gun. We use it to scare away intruders or intimidate whoever dared to confront us when we are in operation. We also use jack to create sound that look like gun shot by hitting the jark on the ground anytime we see intruder.

“In a week we operated once or twice at Bariga side along the road and Oju-Elega area. If there is alarm in the vehicle we leave it and run before the owner comes out. Where we decide to stay we use the taped pipe as gun to low the owner of the car and keep him quiet till we finish operation.

The second suspect Vincent said “I am from Ezinifite, Mbaise Imo State as Ifeanyi. Though I am a business man, I trade on anything that can give me daily bread. I am married with three children and my wife is presently heavy with pregnancy.

“I also operate a beer parlour at Iba junction in Lagos. I bought my private car Mercedes V-Boot N150,000. I used to get money from the selling of drinks, cigarette, pepper soup and hot drinks.

“It was Ifeanyi that lured me into car vandalization. Two of us used to go in the midnight to operate. We don’t use gun. We used only taped pipe and hammer, screw driver. It is because of the taped pipe we used as gun that police said we use arms. I am not an armed robber. I am car vandalizer. My wife also asked me to stop vandalization of cars but hardship and greed did not allow me. I was financially down that I could not afford N50,000 to take care of my family. Most of the drinks and food items are bought on credit. Both of us are from the same community, Mbaise in Imo State.

“If I am released I will go back to my beer parlour and will never do car vandalization again. I will also cut off all my friends that are criminals and declare openly that I want to be left alone to chart a new course for my life void of criminality.”

A source said the vehicle somersaulted four times, leading to the death of two policemen.

Evbouan Aighakhai, an Inspector with AP No. 100445 from Edo State, and Sergeant Nuru Aliyu Sanni, with Force No. 210849 from Katsina State, died at University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan, where they were rushed to.

    Three robbery suspects killed

The police in Delta State have shot three robbery suspects, following a dawn raid on their hideout.

Police spokesperson Tina Kalu identified the “robbers” as Fulani herdsmen.

Kalu said the hoodlums were part of a gang terrorising motorists at the Isele-Azagba axis of the Onitsha-Benin Expressway.

According to her, operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) working with local hunters received information of unusual movement in the forest linking Isele-Azagba/Ibusa and Ogwashi-Uku.

She said while the police team was searching the forest, the hoodlums opened fire on the team.

“The police engaged the criminals in a gunbattle, which resulted in the death of three suspects.

Kalu said one of the robbers escaped with bullet wounds.

One AK47 with rusty breach number, two live AK47 live ammunition, one locally made single barrel gun, one dagger, and one cutlass were recovered.

  • Obiano cracks down on criminals

    Obiano cracks down on criminals

Since Anambra State Governor Chief Willie Obiano announced his resolve to fight armed robbers and other criminals such as drug addicts, everybody has been waiting for him to walk the talk. But he has been matching his talk with his walk. For instance, he set up a joint military task force comprising all the security agencies in the state.

And the result? Criminals have started fleeing the state.

But just before their flight, there was a large haul of felons picked up by the task force. Residents are also coming up with information.

Last week, over 25 armed robbery and kidnap suspects were arrested and paraded, even as not less than four were shot dead in exchange of gunfire.

Obiano has demonstrated uncommon resolve to stamp out violent crimes in the state, launching an all-out offensive against kidnappers and armed robbers.

For one week, the joint military task force ransacked the three senatorial zones of the state making arrests. The state police command on its own despite being members of the joint military task force, went on its own through Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) making arrests.

The police at the weekend paraded 20 suspected kidnappers and armed robbers at the headquarters of the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS), Awkuzu.

Commissioner of Police Gwary Usman who paraded the suspects said five AK 47 rifles, one Barrette Pistol; six pump action guns, 9,000 live cartridges; eight magazines; 1 locally made pistol and two and a half bags of Indian hemp were recovered from them.

Gwary commended the efforts of the SARS leader, James Nwafor for leading the his men in apprehending the kidnappers of former Federal Director of Finance, Chief Robinson Ezeife and Chief Felix Obiefuna from Agulu.

He assured the state citizens that with their collaboration and volunteering of information to the police, they would send packing all armed robbers and kidnappers as well as other criminal elements in the state. He thanked Governor Obiano for his support to the police and other security agencies in fighting crime especially with the formation of Joint Military Task Force.

The Commissioner for Police regretted that many people are providing information to kidnappers and armed robbers on who to kidnap and rob, describing those people as worse than the robbers and kidnapers.

Usman said further: “These men were arrested this week with all these arsenals. By special grace of God and the support we are getting from the Governor of Anambra State Chief Willie Obiano, we have the courage and zeal to fight crime and we are going to achieve the desired results. Anybody who is a criminal or a kidnapper should surrender his or her arms now unless he wants to be arrested. We are not relenting until we get rid of all criminal elements in the state’’.

On the   joint task force constituted by Governor Obiano , Gwary said: ‘’ the formation is marvelous. We are still working on Onitsha by the time we finish with Onitsha , we would move to other senatorial zones. The Governor said he wants the state to be cleaned of all bad elements and we in security decided to come together and fight crime collectively because we have realized that one arm of the security agency could not reach everywhere it supposed to get to.

‘’But these operation is by the police led by OC SARS James Nwafor, we arrested some in Lagos, others in Asaba , others in Imo and anywhere a kidnapper runs to we would be there to arrest the kidnapper or armed robber……..’’ .

But in a swift reaction some of the 20 suspects paraded admitted the allegations leveled against them and appealed for public forgiveness as they were led into the crime by frustration.

A kidnap suspect, Ogochukwu Ngwuche from Eziagu, Enugu state admitted he is a kidnapper this way: ‘’I am a kidnapper. I kidnapped PC Emerah brother. My gang is here and the person that gave us information is here. He paid ransom of N5 Million’’. He said he was arrested in Asaba.

On how he got the guns he used, Ogochukwu said: ‘’We bought one AK47 for N450,000 and the man I bought the gun from is here.

For another suspect Philip Amia from Nkanu Enugu state :’’ I am a kidnapper . I don’t know the man we kidnapped but the person who gave us information is here. The police arrested me in Asaba. Look at the information manager here. ……..This is the third time I am kidnapping since I came back from Malaysia. I  was in Malaysia for 8 years , doing very well and had so many property until I ran into problem. I lost everything in my house …. And I was looking for money or what to do to survive until I was lured into this.

He admitted that he had raised N2 Million since he started the kidnapping business and he used it to send somebody to Malaysia to get goods for him but the person ran into problem too and has not returned. He said he regretted all his actions now.

Again, Echezona Akpulu from Nkitaku village Agulu admitted giving information the kidnappers used to kidnap his kinsman Felix Obiefuna and his proceeds from the crime was N300,000  which he used to send some money to his brother at South Africa and used the remainder to buy drinks for the memorial service of his late father.

On Monday, the joint military patrol team arrested four suspected criminals, recovering some bags and wraps of  substance suspected to be Cannabis Sativa (Indian Hemp) estimated to weigh 100 kilograms.

The team comprising the Army, Navy, Police, Department of Security Services, DSS and National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA among others.

On a tip-off, they stormed a hideout near the Old Motor Car Spare Parts (Mgbuka) Market, Obosi, near Onitsha at about 12 noon but the suspects sighted the team, took to their heels but in a concerted effort, five of them were tracked down.

Many others escaped into a nearby bush even as all efforts to arrest more suspects proved abortive as the team left the area after thorough combing and firing tear gas canisters into the area to smoke them out.

The team took off from the 302 Military cantonment, Onitsha,  and when they returned with the suspects and their Indian hemp, they interrogated them briefly and discovered that one of them was just a passerby and released him unconditionally with apology.

A principal suspect who identified himself as Chibuzor Echendu, a native of Imo State, confessed to newsmen that he was a major distributor of Indian hemp in the area, adding that Samuel Nonso who was also among the four suspects in the team’s net, was once his apprentice in the hemp business.

Some of the residents of Mgbuka Obosi market who witnessed the joint operation, including   Pastor Kingsley Ezeoke of the Jesus Transformation Ministry, Diaku Ifesinachi, Mrs, Uche Okeke, Victor Ezechi and Chibuzor Nnabuchi, commended Governor Obiano for setting up the joint team and urged him to sustain the tempo until all the criminal elements are flushed out and adequate security maintained in the state.

They regretted that some hoodlums had attacked unsuspecting residents of the area within that same spot by way of snatching their motorcycles and dispossessing them of their valuables but urged the joint team not to harass and intimidate law-abiding citizens while carrying out their duties.

The grand commander of the joint team and state deputy commissioner of police, Agyole Abeh told newsmen shortly after the exercise that the operation started about 10 days ago, adding that a considerable arrests and recoveries have been recorded by the team since its inception.

The leader of Army team, Captain Tukuru and his NDLEA counterpart, Ameh Inalegwu who is also the Assistant State Commander in charge of Operations/Intelligence, said the operation would continue until all the criminals in the state are flushed out of existence.

On Tuesday there was tension in Onitsha yesterday following the killing of two suspected armed robbers by policemen attached to one new generation banks at Limca road, in the commercial city of Onitsha.

Eye witnesses said the two suspected robbers operating in Okada met their waterloo when they had successfully robbed a lady who had gone to the bank to withdraw an undisclosed sum of money and wanted to zoom off before policemen attached to the bank opened fire.

The witness said the robbers were killed in the ensuing gunfire adding that residents of the commercial city and passersby stopped to catch a glimpse of the lifeless bodies of the shot armed robbers as they were kept in front of the bank shortly after they were shot.

The items recovered from them included brand new Motorcycle with which they operated, English and locally made pistols and undisclosed sum of money as well as number of mobile phones.

The Nation was told that the suspected armed robbers were members of the gang of armed robbers specialized in robbing unsuspecting members of the public after bank transactions.

Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, (PPRO), DSP Emeka Chukwuemeka confirmed the robbery incident but said there was no casualty on the side of the police and innocent passersby.

Chukwuemeka admitted people scampered for safety when the men of the underworld attacked the lady. He said the robbers were members of the gang of armed robbers specialized in terrorizing the residents of the area on motorcycles, popularly known as Okada. He added that the incident had further reduced the menace of the men of the underworld

He appealed to the people of the community to continue to volunteer information that could lead to the hideout of the armed robbers on the ground that the Police command, under CP Usaman Gwary is committed to fighting crime and criminality in the state.

Anambra state joint Military security operation team yesterday set ablaze the camps of the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) Nnewi, Nnewi North .

At Nnewi the Joint Taskforce raided some criminal hideouts in Nnewi North Local Government Area arresting five suspected criminals and Indian hemp dealers including a woman.

Leader of the team ,Anambra State DCP Operations, Agyole Abeh who was represented  said the exercise was in line with Governor Willie Obiano’s resolve to rid the major cities in Anambra State of criminals and all forms of anti-social activities .

Some of the flashpoints raided included Mbuze (an erosion site) which is said to be the den of men of the underworld in Uruagu quarter, Oduda Nnewichi and Obiofia.

At Oduda Nnewichi, the MASSOB’s camp was raided and allegedly set ablaze and items said to be recovered there were Biafran flags, attendance register, military wears, caps and items suspected to be charms even as a suspect was arrested there.

The team also recovered seven polythene bags of Indian hemp at Obiofia and other incriminating items.

MASSOB National Deputy Director of Information, Mazi Chris Mocha said it was unfortunate and saw no reason or justification for the raid. He said that the military wears allegedly recovered from the MASSOB’s camp were the properties of the organization.

“It is very unfortunate that our camp was raided and there was no reason for that even though we support the effort of the security Joint Task Force to rid state but particularly Onitsha of criminals, which should not be extended to us because we are not criminals.

“There is no reason for that raid. Those uniforms they said they recovered from us were not Nigerian army or any of the force’s uniforms. They are Biafran security uniforms. They are neither arms nor ammunition. So nothing justifies that military action against us. We have committed no offense,” Mocha explained.

The team equally arrested an Onitsha based park agent, Chukwudi Ogah.

The suspect was arrested along upper Iweka axis while molesting a driver for not paying his daily revenue even as an undisclosed sum and charms were discovered from the suspect.

The joint team later launched operation traffic flow and chased the touts loading along the roads inside the Onitsha central park even as most of the touts and pick pockets went into hiding.

The team mounted surveillance along Upper Iweka to bridge head and Aba park to electrical market, attracting commendation from traders and passers-by who hailed the exercise.

Some of them, Osondu Igbokwe, Agatha Nwanne and Ambrose Eze commended the leadership of Governor Willie Obiano in his avowed resolve to rid the state off criminalities but urged that the tempo be sustained so that traders can heave a sigh of relieve.

Addressing journalists, the leader of the team and Anambra State DCP Operations, Agyole Abeh said the exercise is to sanitize the state and to ensure that there is free flow of traffic in the commercial nerve centre of the state. He added that armed robbers and kidnappers will not have peace until they leave the state.

The suspect fingered one Chijioke Onwe from Imo State as their boss and disclosed that they make more than N10, 000 daily but were being paid N1, 000 on daily basis adding that the charm is for protection against driver’s curses.

But, Chijioke Onwe when contacted denied that his name is not Chijioke Onwe but Nnamdi Anaekwe. He disclosed that he is a certified pack agent managing Onitsha-Asaba Township buses motor park saying that he was duly commissioned by the State Government as a park agent.

When this reporter insisted on evidence as an agent, the said agent flanked an appointment letter duly signed by the Anambra State Commissioners for Transport and Finance, Dr. Chike Ohamobi and Ngozika Okoye respectively as well as that of S.A. on Internally Generated Revenue, Lady V.A. Obinwa.

The letter reads in part, “Approval has been given to you (Anambra Solid Cooperative Society Ltd) as park agent for the management of Onitsha-Asaba Township Buses Motor Parks…”

When contacted, the State Commissioner for Transport, Dr. Chike Ohamobi denied knowing any such name as Chukwudi Oga, Chijioke Onwe and Nnamdi Anakwe but admitted signing an appointment letter of Anambra Solid Cooperative Society Ltd, which is being managed by one Mr. Nelson.

His words: “Anambra Solid Cooperative  Society is a legal agent of the State Government. We empowered the agent and we group them as Asaba Township Bus, an urban bus that stops at various bus stops. It is a genuine revenue window and they pay close to N1 million in government coffers every month.

“So, it could be that those names you are calling are the people helping the man in collecting the revenue and if he is a genuine agent and was arrested, then, it will amount to disruption of the chain of revenue collection in the state”.

Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar and the world famous Israeli security expert, Moshe Keinan lauded Obiano’s ingenuity for the security summit and pledged their support.

Moshe Keinan is the founder and owner of MKGroup Consultancy, Security & Instruction LTD, a Tel-Aviv based company that teems with experts on diverse fields of security with specialization in intelligence, police, prisons, ports and airports security among others.

Moshe Kienan , an academic director in National Security Studies at Galilee College, has his main interests mostly in the areas of security knowledge, planning and execution, operations and intelligence, national defence, strategy and human simulations and instruction.

There was tension at the Onitsha Main Market yesterday when the Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) invaded the market to arrest a notorious arms dealer, Alphonsus Ngwu.

Ngwu’s men tried to prevent his arrest. But he was shot while trying to escape during a commotion.

The shots created tension, as traders scampered for safety.

The SARS team recovered over 8,000 rounds of live ammunition from his shop.

Others are: six pump action, one revolver, 6,390 live cartridges, 62 rounds of 5.65mm live ammunition, 74 rounds of 9mm live ammunition, 100 rounds of air rifle ammunition, 12 magazines for AK 47, 2 magazines for k-2 rifle, dismantled parts of AK-47, GPMG ammunition and one smoke cartridge.

Commissioner of Police Gwary Usman described Ngwu as special arms dealer and smuggler.

He hailed the SARS team, led by James Nwafor.

Ngwu, from Ugwuoba in Oji River Local Government Area of Enugu State, told the reporters the items were recovered from his shop and promised to lead Nwafor to his warehouse.

But he said he was not involved in robbery or kidnapping.

He said he had been in the business for 15 years, adding that he gets his arms from abroad.

The suspect alleged that a man from the North was his contact man.

The police alleged that he was behind communal clashes in the country, as he supplies arms to warring communities and dealers, who sell to robbers.

From a record of his sales, it was learnt that he sells two pieces of AK 47 for N620,000.

From the addresses in the log book, the police alleged that he sponsored the Ezza/Ezilo war, among others.

Policemen attached to the Ogun State Police Command on Friday arrested two ladies-Kubura Salami, Kafaya Poopola, and three men-Tantolorun Abimbola, Wahid Ibrahim and Adamu Rafiu, for allegedly being in possession of human heads and some pieces of human flesh.

The five suspects were apprehended in Joju area of Ota in Ado Odo Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State in a joint operation conducted by the A team from Ota Divisional Police Headquarters led by Mr. Gabriel Dibie and the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) from the Lagos State Command.

It was gathered that the police team from Ota assisted the SARS operatives who got the information of the activities of the suspects at the Joju area, where they were arrested following a tip- off.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ogun State Command, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the “exhibits recovered from the suspects include one complete human head and pieces of human flesh in a container stained with liquid substance suspected to be human blood.”

‘I smuggled guns stacked in yam flour’

An alleged international gun smuggler, Abdulazeez Amao, has been arrested by men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Lagos State Police Command.

The suspect, who had been on the “wanted list” of the police, was held by the command, following intelligence reports on his exploits at the nation’s border with Seme.

Amao and his “middle-man,” Olatunji Tubosun, were paraded yesterday at the Parade Ground of the Police Command Headquarters in GRA, Ikeja, Lagos. Items recovered from them included 10 new AK47 rifles and 19 AK7 magazines, all loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition.

Amao told reporters that he imported the weapons from Burkina Faso, adding: “I was introduced into the business by a man, Gbenga. I am a serious smuggler, but I do any other business that comes my way. When Gbenga promised to sponsor me to Burkina Faso, I grabbed the idea because I believe that if there is no venture, there won’t be success. One of my wives is from Ouagadougou, the Burkina Faso capital; so, I was able to mix up and got connected to Zakari Watara, who was bringing arms and ammunition from Mali to Burkina Faso. I would buy from him and import to Nigeria.”

On how he was able to beat security operatives in Mali, Amao said: “It is by packaging my consignment into cartons of milk. Whenever I arrived Paraku Town in Benin Republic, I would repackage the arms and ammunition into bags containing yam flour (Elubo) and then transport them to Ibadan, Oyo State capital, through the border.

“Gbenga who introduced me into the deal also introduced Tubosun who was bringing buyers to me. I was not investigating whoever he brought as what mattered to me was my money. I used to buy one AK47 for 600,0000 CFA (N200, 000) and resold for N320, 000. Tubosun is a good man because he used to pay me cash. However, I was shocked that he was bringing armed robbers to buy arms and ammunition from me.”

Tubosun, who claimed that he only brought hunters to his master, said: “I am a farmer and hunter. We were being attacked in the bush by some land grabbers; so, we used the rifles to defend ourselves.”

Commissioner of Police Umar Manko, who paraded the suspects, said following the information he received, he engaged the Officer in Charge of SARS, Abba Kyari.

“We were informed that one suspected armed robber, Olatunji, was arrested in Ikorodu area of Lagos, with an Ak47 rifle and after he was quizzed by Kyari, he confessed that he bought it from Amao, a notorious arms dealer in Ibadan,” said Manko.

Saying that a ‘Decoy’ police team deployed to Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, by Kyari arrested Amao, Manko added:  “He confessed that he had sold several other AK47 rifles and English pistols to many buyers in Oyo, Lagos and Anambra states.”

The police chief said efforts were being made to recover the arms from the armed robbers who bought them and also arrest the Burkina Faso dealer through the assistance of the International Police (Interpol).

  • … And this teenager

    … And this teenager

The killing last Thursday of a teenager by men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) in Ado-Ekiti has added to allegations of extra-judicial killings by the police in Ekiti State, writes SULAIMAN SALAWUDEEN

When four armed policemen besieged a building Ilaja, Ojumose in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, at about 12noon last Thursday, the residents knew there was trouble and before long, they got it in full.

Wielding guns and looking menacing, the policemen from the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) of the State Police Command barged into the house shouting: “Where is he? Where is he?” They moved from one room to another, forcing doors open to see if anyone occupied any of the rooms, a task they were said to have found easy as the doors were made of weak wooden planks.

The armed men were close-ly followed by a man popularly known in the area as Baba White. Fortunately for them, they found a boy, Oluwaseun Awoyemi, reclining on a mat in one of the rooms. Without asking further questions and caring little if he was the one they were seeking, they went for him, held him by his trousers, dragged him out of the room and dealt him blows perhaps, as he had never received in his entire 18-year of existence.

The band of four armed men and one unarmed man were not alone. Now, with them were two elderly women, one in her late seventies; the other in her early sixties, and one heavily pregnant young woman who were all pleading with them. But their pleas counted for nothing.

Eye witness accounts maintained that they insisted Seun must follow them to the ‘station’ for a reason they refused to disclose.

According to the accounts, the boy was able to wrest himself free from their grips after a while and ran into another room but was followed by one of the two elderly women who, following the refusal of the policemen to listen to their pleas, now turned to him appealing that he should follow them (police) with assurance that they would meet him at the police station.

But, before Seun consented to the appeal, guns rang from two sources: one from the entrance to the room and another from the window. The boy, now riddled with bullets, fell, soaked in his own blood; the other woman who was with him was shot in her two hands. She came out shouting ‘they have shot us.’ Where she was coming from now laid the corpse of the boy that would not need to go to the station again: Seun was dead.

    How it all started

At about 9am earlier that day, according to Seun’s grandmother, Mrs. Abigael Awoyemi, the man called Baba White had come to their house, seeking to know who had beaten his son and after some threats, a boy called Taiye confessed to have done it. “Although, we appealed to him, he still gave that boy some slaps to satisfy himself,” Mrs. Awoyemi said.

She spoke further: “We all thought it had ended there. Surprisingly, about two hours later, he appeared with the police who looked fearful, pointing guns everywhere and forcing doors open. My son just finished eating and lying down in his room there. They went in, held him by his trousers and dragged him out.

“We even asked Baba White whether Seun was the one that beat his son, he did not reply me till now. He was watching the whole scene. And I appealed to the boy to follow them (the police). My son refused. Suddenly, he freed himself and ran into another room. I followed him inside the room, begging that he should follow them. Surprisingly, they followed him. My sister was the one who had gone inside with my son into the room earlier, saying he should follow them.

“Not long after they were inside, and while my sister was still beg-ging Seun, we heard the gunshots. My sister ran out, showing her hands where they shot her. I rushed inside and met my son, lying in the pool of his blood. I started crying: ‘they have killed my son, they have killed my son.’

“Immediately they shot him, they left. Four of them and just a few minutes later, they came back, this time around, they numbered about six. I was still with him, crying. This was a boy I have been nursing since he was one and a half years. He never hurt anyone. His father is my first son.  When they came back, they carried him away and we later learned he was taken to the State Police Command.”

A statement by the police later confirmed that Seun’s corpse had been deposited at the mortuary of the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital. The Police Public Relations Officer, Victor Babayemi said investigation was ongoing and no arrest has been made.

    Why was

    Seun killed?

Residents of the area, especially neighbours could not adduce any reason why anyone let alone the police would kill Seun. According to some of them, the boy was apparently killed by the police for “no just cause.”

One neighbour told The Nation that: “Seun was a model child in this area. He was humble, obedient and hardworking. When he did not want to school again, he stopped and started learning bricklaying.

“Apart from that, there is no job he was not doing. See all the Igbo people selling on the road, Seun would go there and help them offload their goods. Call him any time he was there, easy going.  Tell him to borrow you some money, he would always give you. He would go for bricklaying in the morning and in the evening when you expect him to rest, he would join other boys to offload trucks out there. That was his life.

    Other victims of

    the development

There were other victims of the attack according to one Mr. Peter Olaseinde. He said a 15-year-old boy popularly called Small, who also lived in the area was equally beaten and brutalised, after which they arrested him.

“Small was also arrested too. They hit him on the head with the butt of their gun. Blood was coming out of his head. Yet, they arrested him. He is now in police station. They took him to the police headquarters.

Another victim was the heavily pregnant Fatima, who was among those who pleaded for mercies from the invading band. The incident left her traumatised leading to her having a miscarriage and lying critically ill at the hospital.

She managed to speak with The Nation: “Soon after the ordeal, around 2pm that day, the children started struggling inside and I was rushed to the hospital. When the doctor and the nurses saw that I was dying they forced me to have the children. But one was already dead.

Supporting Fatima, a nurse at the hospital confirmed, “If the delivery was not induced, the second child and Fatima would have died as well.  Fatima said one of the attackers pushed her.”

    Seun’s wife just got pregnant

The Nation learnt that Seun, whose wife Oyewole Opeyemi is pregnant had been preparing for the arrival of the baby who he had boasted would be a male. Unfortunately, he would never see the baby. Opeyemi said her husband had suggested that the two of them relocate to Lagos, promising to take care of her. “I saw him last in the night of Wednesday. He said we should be going to Ekon in Kwara State or Lagos. He was from Ekon. I said I won’t go with him as I don’t have any one there. He gave me N170 being the only money on him. I am pregnant for him now. Where is the father, in the mortuary,” Opeye-mi said.

Tales of similar brutalities by the police

Azeez Alese, who claimed to have been brutalised alongside his wife and a friend said “even those alive don’t get justice let alone the dead. Alese, who lives in the same area recalled that eight mobile police officers came to arrest him with his wife and a friend on October 15, 2013, while he was eating in his room on Sallah Day last year.

“I was not around when some boys fought. I came round to eat in the afternoon. They (the police) came numbering eight. They were all mobile police officers. They fired tear gas into our house and arrested me and my friend, Gbenga Alese. They never took me to court. They also arrested my wife, Busayo. We spent 36 days in the cell. When they liked, they released me.

    The interventions in the case

The Nation learnt that the state government has ordered investigation into the incident, insisting that the culprits must be brought to justice. Also, the Legal Aid Council had also reportedly intervened to ensure adequate legal support was given to the family should the case be taken to court.

But the father of the slain teenager, Dele Adebayo Awoyemi, had lost all hope of getting justice for his son, saying, “What did they say my son did. Was he caught robbing on the highway? Just last month, I wanted to take him to my farm. But, I thought my mother would need him. He was not even up to two years when she (the mother) took charge of his upkeep. Mama’s efforts have gone to waste.

Any possibility that the culprits, in the latest extra-judicial killing, will be caught and made to face justice? Azeez Alese said, “such things do not happen in Nigeria. You will hear that the police have done this, they have done that, but that will be all.  Remember, they shot and killed a girl in Orin, in 2011 and in 2012, they killed another boy in Ilupeju. Have you heard of developments in respect of those cases again, impossible?”
