  • Scholarship for Anambra youths

Many keep their pile of cash to themselves. Not Mr. Barth Nwibe, an engineer. Over 70 students in Anambra State are said to have studied and graduated from several tertiary institutions at the instance of his organisation, Ugo Ukwu Foundation. That is not all. Primary and secondary school pupils are also said to have been drawing from his scholarship scheme for 11 years.

Neither is his philanthropy limited to his Igbo Ukwu community in Aguata Local Government Area of the state.

TheNation gathered that about 250 primary school students and over 200 others in secondary schools across the state are studying under his scholarship scheme.

Last weekend at the Ekwulobia township stadium in Aguata council area, the foundation awarded more scholarships to 40 students from primary to tertiary levels.

Besides, the foundation presented over 10 laptops to some of the students to help them in their academics.

The state governor Willie Obiano  was represented at the event by the Commissioner for Education, Prof Kate Omenugha.

Obiano described the likes of Nwibe, the financier of the foundation, as success stories.

He noted that the scholarship grants was one way of supporting the gain made by his administration in the education sector.

For Prof. Uchenna Nwosu, who was the chairman of the event, Barth Nwibe is a rare breed, who attained success through hard work.

He told the students and their parents that the key to success is  education, which, according to him, is also the basis of progress in any society.

Apart from the laptops to the students and the scholarship to the new 40 students, textbooks, exercise books in cartons were presented to the students.

Speaking with the Nation, Nwibe, a strong believer in APC and major financier of the party to some of the contestants in different positions in the party, said it was his own way of giving back to the society.

He said the 40 students emerged through a careful, meritorious selection process, adding that the process had been ongoing for the past eleven years which had become a yearly ritual.

Nwibe, therefore, commended the foundation for the progress made so far, adding that it was just the beginning, nothing that there are more to come.

For Nwoye Valentine of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU), Awka, and Okafor Kosi of Holy Child Secondary School Isuofia in Aguata council Area, two of the beneficiaries, it was a dream come true.

The duo thanked the foundation for giving them opportunity of being like other students, adding that they would put up their best in making sure they come out in flying colours in their different disciplines.

Scholarship changed my life, says KC’s best

At the twilight of his primary school education, Abraham Awamba, lost his father – eclipsing hopes of furthering his education.

His mother toiled day and night to fund his education and that of four other siblings.

Fast forward to today.  Awamba has been guaranteed of sponsorship up to Ph.D level.  He was one of the three best graduating students honoured during the valedictory service/speech and prize-giving day of King’s College,  Lagos, last Saturday.

The 16-year-old could not hide his excitement as he shared his dreams of studying medicine with The Nation, thanking the Daniel Ogechi Akujobi Memorial Foundation (DOAMF) for making it possible through a sponsor.

“I am happy, excited and above all thankful to DOAMF (Daniel Ogechi Akujobi Memorial Foundation) for the opportunity they gave me. I never knew I would go to secondary school. Ours was a hopeless case because I can still remember how my mum would suffer to raise my primary school fees.

“But today, I didn’t just attend any school, I was sponsored and sent to one of the best schools, they have always provided my needs and ensured I lacked nothing.

“Today, I am a step closer to my dream of becoming a medical doctor. I want to thank the foundation and also my sponsor for drying our tears. I also want to tell other children who think all hope is lost that they should not give up.

Aside being one of the three best graduating students, Awamba won the Maria Ezenkwe Prize for the best graduating student in Biology; MTN prize for the best in English Language; Mrs. Owumi prize for the best in English  and Otunba Dele Olapeju prize for best in English.

    His journey to greatness

His mother, Mrs. Bridget Awamba, said fortune smiled on her son after one of his primary school teachers discovered him.

“I was  working at the primary school where my son attended. I assisted them with computer work.  One of his teachers discovered that he was a very intelligent boy. She knew I did not have money so she brought a form for scholarship one day for us to fill.

“After filling the form, my soon attended the interview by the  DOAMF and he did well.  That was how they started sponsoring.

“He was first sent to Saint Finbarrs  Secondary School; he performed excellently there and was later transferred to King’s College where he completed his secondary educaqtion.

“I am grateful to DOAMF and to my son’s sponsor for giving him a life I could never have been able to afford. They gave him education and have promised to sponsor him to any level he wants to attend; I would not have been able to give him that.

A DOAMF board of trustee member, Mrs. Sotonye Akujobi, said Awamba is one of 74 poor but brilliant children the foundation  has offered scholarships across the country.  The children are sponsored by various members of the society to assist them achieve their dreams in life.

Mrs. Akujobi said that Awamba’s sponsor, who does not want to be named, was proud of him.

“Awamba is an intelligent child and so, it is a source of motivation for his sponsor. Aside being intelligent, he is well behaved,” she said.

Speaking at the programme, Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, Dr MacJohn Nwaobiala said that the Federal Government had invested in educational facilities, and teacher-training in the 104 unity colleges.

He also said that new teachers are being employed and posted to the schools.

“New teaching staff have also been recruited to address the shortage of teachers in the Federal Unity Colleges. ICT and Trade subjects for entrepreneurship as compulsory cross-cutting core subjects have been introduced,” he said.

Earlier in his address, Principal of the college, Mr Oladele Olapeju, expressed concern over government’s policies on education which he said tend to lay undue emphasis on examinations to the detriment of knowledge acquisition.

“While agreeing that examination is essential in measuring learning achievement, the situation is very disturbing as our graduating students spend almost five months criss-crossing one examination hall to the other with barely little time to study. The experience is too harrowing and on the long run costly to knowledge acquisition.

“The Joined Admissions and Matriculation Board must strive to adjust its examination date to July  ending every year in order to allow the final year students concentrate on their studies,’’ he said.

“There are not many adults who can do what this boy did. He is a good boy, and should be encouraged,” he added.

  • 12-year-old gets football scholarship

    12-year-old gets football scholarship

    •’I worked hard for it’

Twelve-year-old Similoluwa Gbenle was the star of the fourth Greensprings-Kanu Football camp that ended last Saturday.

He emerged the best player at the camp and would complete his secondary education at the Greensprings Spring School, Lekki, Lagos as his reward.

The scholarship worth millions each year, would afford him to study at the elite school while nurturing his football talents.

He would get the opportunity to participate in national and international age-grade football competition, which the school normally enters its football team for.

Gbenle is the fifth beneficiary of the scholarship that is announced  yearly at the end of the camp meant for school-aged children of between five and 17.

Though grateful to God, the former  pupil of Somolu High School, Bariga, in Lagos State, said he worked for it.

“I am very happy and thank God for making it possible for me to get the scholarship. I am grateful to Greensprings and I prayed that God will continue to support and strengthen school. I worked very hard this week and I put in my best. I followed the coaches’ instructions and took my training very serious,” he said.

The camp was handled by British Coaches from English Premier League side, West Bromwich Albion, who described some of the participants as future football stars.

One of them, Richard Holmes, said the talent displayed by the students was exceptional.  He however added that efforts must continue to nurture them to stardom.

“The footballers are great and they are very keen. Even when we finish coaching them, they still carry on playing all day. We train them four hours a day; so for them to carry on is brilliant. They are very good players, the equipment and facilities is great and everybody here is fantastic and it has been really good,” Holmes said.

Adrian Dove praised the Greensprings for its facilities, which he said helped to bring out the best in the pupils.

He said: “The facility is great and it is incredible. The grass pitches is great for the purpose they are used for. The goal posts are very good and I think everything is fantastic even the halls we are staying in are just what we need so it is really good and the school is great. I think it is the passion for the game. The children are willing to learn which I think it is a good thing because if you got children who don’t want to be here, it will be hard for us.

“We’ve got children who are really passionate about what they want to do and they are going to do well with football.”

On his part, Ashley Hodgkins, who was facilitating the camp for a second time, also said the facilities had improved.  He praised the tenacity of the participants.

“This week the children have had 18 hours of coaching time. Back home in England, the professional players wouldn’t get 18 hours a week of coaching so I think they had a lot of good coaching.

They camp is good for the youth teams, the national teams and if we see players like we’ve got in the older groups, they can go to England have opportunity to play in the Premier League. When we get back home we can speak to the academy at West Bromwich Albiom and see what they can do for players to give them choices,” he said.

Over 100 participants drawn from Lagos, Ogun, Rivers states, Abuja and others participated in the camp.

  • Ige’s children seek two pupils for N24m scholarship

Ige’s children seek two pupils for N24m scholarship

Children of the late Chief Bola Ige are seeking two indigent pupils from Oyo and Osun states to benefit from a N24 million scholarship they endowed to immortalise their father.

The catchment area covers the old Oyo State, where the late Ige was governor between 1979 and 1983.

The scholarship competition is scheduled to hold on Saturday at the Salvation Army Middle School, in Osogbo, Osun State.

The contest will be in two stages – written examination and oral.

Each winner would get N12 million worth of scholarship for their secondary education at The Vale College in Iyaganku GRA, Ibadan.

In a statement, the late Ige’s son and former Commissioner for Lands, Physical Planning and Urban Development in Osun State, Muyiwa, noted that the scholarship, valued at N2 million per session, covers their tuition, feeding, boarding, uniforms, sports/house wears, textbooks and registration for external examinations.

Last year, the maiden edition of the Chief Bola Ige Memorial Scholarship for primary six pupils attracted applications from about 100 pupils from various schools in Ibadan.

Master Folajuwon Ganiyu of Ayekale Community Primary School IV and Titi Josephine Friday of Command Primary School, Osogbo, emerged the overall winners.

Mrs Funso Adegbola, Director of The Vale College and daughter of the late Ige, said the scholarship is a continuation of her parents’ legacy.

She said: “I am fully persuaded that they will do exceedingly well and I promised them that if they get a Distinction A Grade, in all their subjects, I will solicit for funding to send them to any Nigerian university of their choice. We instituted this scholarship because our parents were benefactors to many Nigerian students.

“It is in continuation of these high ideals bequeathed to us by our parents that the Board of The Vale College decided to institute the Bola Ige Memorial Scholarship at The Vale College.

“Those eligible for the scholarships must be highly gifted primary six pupils in public primary schools, in Oyo and Osun States (the states which constitute the old Oyo State, where he was the first Governor from 1979-83).”

Muyiwa said the scheme espouses the father’s legacy of free education.

“This is the modest way by which the family of the late Chief James Ajibola Ige can touch the lives of the helpless Nigerians and show the world that Bola Ige lives on!” he said.
