Nine corps members, who became physically-challenged during their service year, were given N23.5 million cash under the NYSC Hope Alive programme. They had varying degrees of permanent disabilities ranging from amputated arms to amputated legs and disfigured burns from accidents.

Ibeto Group donated N5 million to one of the nine injured corps members, who could not attend the event because of the injury.

Akwa Ibom State Governor Godswill Akpabio donated N5 million to the nine corps members and Heritage Bank donated N1.5 million to each of them.

Three best overall female corps members, one from each of the three batches, also received plaques and cash reward from the National Council of Women Society.

Jonathan said: “Once again, I congratulate all awardees on your well merited recognition and honour. The entire nation salutes the determination, courage, discipline, commitment and hard work, which you exhibited during the service year.

“In line with our policy of encouraging our youths  to always strive for excellence, including serving and prospective corps members, I hereby announce immediate employment of the award winners in the Federal Civil Service, as well as automatic scholarship up to doctorate level in any university of their choice across the globe.

“I urge you to always be good ambassadors of this great country, and we shall continue to look up to you for greater vision and accomplishments.”

He added: “On our part, we will continue to accord priority to youth development through policies and programmes that will empower them not only for economic survival, but also for future leadership roles in our nation.

“The Federal Government will continue to initiate policies and programmes that are focussed on our youths. So far, we have put in place the National Schools Agriculture Programme, the YouWin! Programme, the youth empowerment component of the Subsidy Reinvestment Programme (SURE-P) and in no distant time, we will establish a National Youth Development Fund to ensure that our vision for empowered youth is firmly irreversible.

“As part of our Transformation Agenda, government gave approval for the NYSC to establish a Department of Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development. It is encouraging, from all indications, that the corps members have eagerly embraced this programme.

“The NYSC Hope Alive Programme (NYSC-HAP), which seeks to identify and recognise Corps members, who had the misfortune of becoming physically-challenged as a result of injuries they sustained in the course of their National Service to our fatherland, is one programme that is very dear to me.

“The concern demonstrated by the NYSC in identifying and recommending some of them for appointment into the Federal Civil Service, while also assisting others financially to enable them cater for their needs, is highly commendable. We must take care of the needy without hesitation.”

He also said that the prompt response and pragmatism with which the scheme addressed issues of national emergencies had also been demonstrated in the way it  successfully keyed into the global campaign against the dreaded Ebola Virus Disease.

But he said the ceremony would be the last combined function for more than one batch that he would entertain as the scholarship being offered now might be belated to many of the awardees, who must have furthered their studies since they completed their NYSC two years ago.

He directed that awards for any particular batch should be given not too long after the end of the batch’s service.

Minister of Youth Boni Haruna hoped that the gesture would spur the awardees to continue to give greater service to the country.

“This is a challenge for you to strive towards excellence in all endeavours,” he said.

The Director General of the NYSC, Brig. Gen. Johnson Olawumi said the 164 winners included 55 corps members from the 2012 batch, 52 from 2013 batch and 57 from the 2014 batch.

He said they were selected by a committee made up of people of proven integrity and that the NYSC Hope Alive programme was aimed at sustaining corps members who sustained injuries during service.

Elections in Nigeria, he said, had become more credible since corps members started participating in their conduct.

Jonathan presented medals to the 164 corps members and took group photographs with each of the batches and the injured winners.

He also cut a cake baked for the awardees.

SENATOR SEKIBO I need a scholarship

I am a boy of 18 years, working as a houseboy in Ozuboko, Abuloma, River State.

I do not have a father. My mother managed to sponsor my secondary education. I am still interested in higher education, but my mother lacks financial strength to sponsor me.

I believe the only person who can make me realize my ambition of attending a university or polytechnic is Senator George Thompson Sekibo.

I want him to show mercy to me by giving me a scholarship. I will not disappoint him.

I am expecting to hear from my good senator

  • Corps member gives scholarship

A batch ‘A’ corps member, serving at St Brendan’s Secondary School, Iyamoyong, Obubra Local Government Area, Cross River State, Joshua Orege, has given scholarships to six orphans in the council.

The scholarship was presented to the secondary school pupils at the inauguration of a statue, also endowed by Orege near the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp.

At the event held at the Local Government Council Hall in Obubra, Orege said he gave the scholarship to reduce illiteracy among the less privileged and give them access to quality education.

Orege, who graduated from the Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti, as the best Chemistry student said: “After observing that for several weeks these children did not go to school because nobody could pay their school fees, I decided to place the burden on myself to the best of my ability.”

He urged wealthy Cross Riverians to initiate scholarship schemes for orphans and downtrodden children in Obubra.

The Cross River State NYSC Coordinator, Alhaji Habibu Kurawa praised Orege for supporting educational advancement in the state.

Represented by the HOD, Community Development Service (CDS), Mr Chuka Osuagwu, he advised the beneficiaries to utilize the opportunity well and stay focused.

  • Scholarship galore from Nigerian Turkish varsity

Scholarship galore from Nigerian Turkish varsity

The overall best SS3 graduate from a village secondary school can get into the Nigerian Turkish Nile University (NTNU), Abuja free of charge.

This is because the university has a scholarship scheme that accepts the top products from any secondary school in Nigeria (public or private).

Mr Kamil Kemanci who visited The Nation on Tuesday, added that candidates with Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) scores of over 230; four A1 in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE); a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.5-5.0 (for direct entry); participants in international Olmpiads, winners of professional competitions in sports, arts or other fields, are eligible for the scholarship which can be up to 100 per cent.

“Even if your school is in the village and you come out top best student, you will be given the scholarship. That is a good opportunity for everybody. You may say that JAMB is a difficult exam but if you are best in your school that is it.  Of course, you must meet all the requirements of the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC), including passing WAEC and JAMB at the required level,” he said.

Meanwhile, the seven-year old university has started accepting students into its new law faculty as well as the school of postgraduate studies.

The Faculty of Law has two departments: Private and Islamic Law, and Public and International Law; while the Postgraduate School runs programmes under the faculties of Management and social sciences, natural and applied sciences, and engineering.

Kemanci said NTNU began in 2009 because of pressure from parents whose wards have passed through the Nigerian Turkish International Colleges (NTIC).

“We built up the university according to the high demands of parents who said that we are grooming their children from nursery, primary and secondary schools so where is your university. So there was so much pressure on the management to start a university, so we started in 2009,” he said.

  • ABUAD’s N87m scholarship woos students

    ABUAD’s N87m scholarship woos students

Many students were all smiles as the news was broken – N87,658,176 was expended on scholarships to students of the Afe Babalola University Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD) at the university’s fifth Founder’s Day.

The figure ballooned from N28 million spent in the previous edition courtesy of endowments, grants and other private donations to the university.

Ten students who made Cumulate Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 5.00 were presented with N500,000 cheques each. Other students also received cheques ranging from N50,000-N300,000, depending on their performance.

The scholarships were split into categories, including: Hayford Alile scholarship for the College of Law; Chevron Star Deep Water Petroleum and Partners Award; Raymond Zard award for free tuition and accommodation; and the Ewi-In-Council award for five best graduating Ado-Ekiti indigenes, grants for educational advancement, compassionate grants and prizes by individuals.

The occasion was also used to usher in new students who took the oath of matriculation for the 2014/2015 session, which the founder, Aare Afe Babalola said gave them the opportunity to see what they can get if they work hard.

Aare Babalola said ABUAD spent N5 million on the 10 university scholars, another N16,605,000 on compassionate grounds; N15,108,176 and N1,100,000 went into  grants on educational advancement and merit award to workers.

Other donations, according to him, came from companies and organisation as well as individuals.

The celebrated lawyer said the award on compassionate ground was to help indigent students study at the university.

He said: “The reason we have the award on compassionate ground is because ABUAD is committed to ensuring that the dream of every students here is fulfilled. If in the course of study, any student loses his or her parents or that the parents loses their job, this university will take up the financial responsibility of the child in question till he or she graduates. Similarly, if we have a brilliant student from a poor home, we will take care of such student’s tuition until graduation.

“This is the only university established as a non-profit making nationwide. “Every kobo that is made by the university goes back into the university.  There is no shareholding here, and I am not entitled to a kobo as profit. In fact, if the university runs into a problem, it is my duty to rescue it financially.

Babalola also praised the dedication of ABUAD teachers.

“Here, our lectures begin by 8am everyday and our lecturers are already in class before the time. This is a university where lecturers make extra sacrifice to teach between 7pm and 10 pm.

“I have a crop of dedicated lecturers because I shopped for them myself. That is why our students graduate in record time. We have graduated two sets and some have completed their youth service while 12 of them are already teaching in the college,” he said.

Babalola, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), enjoined parents to visit the Engineering complex and the Talent Discovery Centre, which houses 28 types of sports and skill acquisition centre.

Acting Vice-Chancellor Prof Michael Ajisafe admonished the news students to get set for greater challenges.

“You will be challenged by the transition from a dependent child to an independent young adult. There may be no shoulders to lean on. Sometimes the environment may appear choking and unfriendly. You must constantly remind yourself that you are not the first person to attend a university. Remember that others before you faced same or even worse challenges; and yet they overcame, “he said.

A parent Mrs Stella Akintade told The Nation that the vision of the Founder motivated her to bring her ward.

“I was impressed by the vision and achievements of the founder” she said. “I am also impressed by the aesthetic outlay of ABUAD, its infrastructures and drive for morals. My daughter just came in, but I’m hopeful that with an academic-friendly environment like this, the sky is her limit,” she added.
