  • Clark offers scholarships to 100 undergraduates

The alleged killing of the chairman of Oghara Vigilante Group, Mr. Benson Ogedegbe, by men of the 19 Battalion of the Nigeria Army, has continued to generate more controversy across the state.

Chairman of Oghara Community Youth Association, Mr. Efe Tobor, yesterday said eyewitnesses’ accounts claimed that Ogedegbe was killed while attempting to wrestle a rifle from one of the soldiers.

Mr. Tobor, who spoke through his counsel, Barr. Jane Ovierere, in Benin City, said late Ogedegbe was earlier arrested in 2013 by a joint task force of the 19 Battalion Army in Koko in line with illegal bunkery/pipeline vandalization in Oghara.

Barr. Ovierere said a notorious criminal nabbed by soldiers in May 2015 named late Ogedegbe as the source of their arms and ammunition.

Ovierere stated that the confession of the suspect placed late Ogedegbe on the wanted list of the Army after he failed to honour the invitation of the JTF.

She countered claims by Ogedegbe’s wife that her husband was assassinated by the soldiers because she was at the scene of the crime, and could have been killed by the soldiers ‘knowing full well that she can identify and testify against them.’

According to her, “He never returned until the suspect Mr. Austine Adede was released to the Nigeria Police for proper prosecution and the Oghara Youth election which was fast approaching.

“On the day of his death, late Benson Ogedegbe was seen by a roundabout and was chased by the Army until he got to a no alternative road/route. He jumped off his car and started running until a soldier caught up with him and held him from behind.

“My friend Uforma, who was watching from her room window, saw late Benson Ogedegbe dragging a riffle with the soldier who held him. All she heard next was a gunshot and Benson Ogedegbe falling to the ground.”

  • Scholarships for 135 students on Widows Day

As part of activities  marking the 2015 International Widows Day,  the Rock of Ages Empowerment Foundation (RAEF)  has given scholarship to 85 primary school pupils and 50 secondary schools students in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The gesture, according to the Founder and Executive Director of the RAEF, Ignatius Newman Ezeigbo, is aimed at providing succour to the mothers of the 135 students who are widows.

Speaking at an event marking the 2015 International Widows Day in Abuja, Ezeigbo  said his foundation have also trained 95 widows for bakery, 105 for soap making while a sum of N4, 800,000 have  also been set aside to equip the women with all the materials needed for the initial take off in their businesses.

“The Foundation have so far spent N70 million on about 3000 widows since 2012, about ten elderly ones here will get grinding machine value at about N40,000 while 1200 bags of rice and also wrappers will also be shared to the widows today”

Speaking on the future plans of the foundation that have been assisting widows in the last five years, Ezeigbo said it has concluded arrangements to embark on a programme tagged, “Vegetable for life” where lands have been procured in various locations in its branches to be leased to beneficiaries and crops supplied to them for planting.

“Additionally, boreholes are to be provided in various locations to make for an all year round farming since somevegetables are grown all seasons”he said

Ezeigbo called on Nigerians to seize the opportunity of the International Widows Day to start helping widows around them no matter how little, saying they need assistance.

The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs, Ezekiel Oyemomi in his goodwill message at the session said the Federal Government has launched a widows empowerment scheme in collaboration with the MTN Foundation with a strong commitment to address the plight of widows in Nigeria and to ensure their integration into the National transformation processes.

“In addition, the Ministry in continuation of its drive to promote the economic empowerment of women is proposing to train about 100 widows in basic skills and also give them start off grants and tools

“I wish to call on all stakeholders to support these empowerment schemes as a sure way to ensure that widows vulnerability issues and concerns are positively addressed and be encuraged to participate in economic and other activities geared towards improving their status and ensurinh full integration into National Development”he said

Some widows, who spoke at the event, like Sisister Faith Owoicho from Benue State and Rosemary Joseph from Cross River State, said they encountered hardship after the death of their husbands but with the help of the foundation, they now adequately feed their children, pay their school fees and started a trade of their own.

They urged people to extend helping hands to widows.

Other activities that formed part of the celebration includes free medical screening as well as distribution of drugs to the sick persons.

  • MOCPED Provost celebrates birthday with scholarships

MOCPED Provost celebrates birthday with scholarships

It was not only an atmosphere for merry making; rather, it was a moment for redeeming a vow made many years back. Though it was his 53rd birthday, the Provost, Michael Otedola College of Primary Education (MOCPED), Noforija-Epe, Prof Olu Akeusola, was more interested in handing out cheques to the less privileged than taking part in the sumptuous food he had prepared for guests that came to felicitate with him.

Akeusola’s address to his friends and colleagues was brief but emotional, going down memory lane on his rags-to-riches story and how the Olu Akeusola Foundation was born.

“Today is my birthday but it is not a platform for me to flaunt my ego. I just wanted my friends to know why I decided to make this world better than I met it,” Akeusola began.

“I would not say I’m from a poor home. I’m from a modest but prominent family in Epe here. I was as comfortable as I could be while growing up.

“In 1983, I secured admission into College of Education, but in December of the same year, my father died and so everything died with him. That was the beginning of my travails.’’

He continued: “I could hardly afford three basic meals daily. I did all sorts of menial jobs to survive. At a point, I had to cut my mother’s wrapper and sew cloths to wear.

“But all the while, I kept praying to God to save me from this situation and promised that I would use my resources to save humanity if He did. I told God to prosper me so I can also help the less-privileged.

“I don’t know if God has answered my prayers, but I believe I am a lot better than what I was 30 year ago. So, I have decided to dedicate my birthday not only for fun but giving the poor a cause to smile.”

Decked in a pair of black jeans, multi-colour shirt, and a pair of canvas to match, Akeusola stood, as his intimidating profile was reeled out to excited guests that punctuated the reading with applause.

“The purpose is to encourage academic excellence and assist the less- privileged,” said Chairman Olu Akeusola Foundation, Dr Yetunde Folashade. According to her, about N1 million was deployed in this year’s awards with beneficiaries taking N600,000, while the outstanding went on logistics.

The foundation, she explained, awarded 15 beneficiaries cutting across tertiary, secondary and basic levels.

A total of seven beneficiaries in tertiary institutions received N40,000 each, three others in secondary got N30,000 while another three in basic collected N20,000 each respectively,” Folashade added.

She said the foundation was previously conducting an essay competition to arrive at winners, but had to change gear, basing its criteria on selecting the best brains from schools.

On criteria for selection, she said: “The criteria are simple. We just get in touch with HoDs or head teachers of the would-be beneficiary and request for his or her result at the end of each session. The report is sent to us duly stamped by either the HoD or Dean, or the principal of the beneficiary school.

“This is our fourth edition but we want to increase the pool of beneficiaries and also increase the amount that we give them.

“Imagine what can N40,000 do for an undergraduate. I don’t think N40,000 can pay school fees in some public institutions today. So, we are using this opportunity to reach out to partners and individuals. Our doors are opened to whoever wants  to support us,” she said.

One of the beneficiaries Adejumo Funmilola Rebecca was happy she was receiving the award for the second time.

Rebecca 25, and a 300-Level Computer Science Education undergraduate of MOCPED described the award as a result of hardwork.

“I’m happy for winning it the second time; this is just to show that hard work pays,” she said.

  • Okrika violence: Peterside promises scholarships for slain policeman’s children

Okrika violence: Peterside promises scholarships for slain policeman’s children

Rivers State All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Dr. Dakuku Adol Peterside has assured that the four children of 33-year-old police corporal, Ifeanyi Okorie, who was shot dead in Okrika last Tuesday, will benefit from the government’s scholarships till they complete their education.

The children, aged six, four, three and two and their 30-year-old mother, Gift, a police corporal, would not be allowed to suffer, Peterside said.

The APC candidate spoke at the weekend in Port Harcourt, the state capital, at the home of the Okories, behind the Kala Police Station, off Ikwerre Road, when he and other party chieftains visited the widow.

Peterside, who was represented by his running mate, Okorie Honourable Asita, was accompanied by the state APC Chairman Davies Ibiamu Ikanya; the Director-General of Peterside’s Greater Together Campaign Organisation, Chief Victor Tombari Giadom; Commissioner for Agriculture, Emma Chindah and APC leader in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Chief Tony Okocha, among other eminent personalities.

Ifeanyi was shot dead last Tuesday at the playground of the National School, Okrika, venue of Peterside’s rally.

The peaceful ceremony was disrupted with explosions and gunshots by suspected thugs allegedly working for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Over 50 persons were injured and several property destroyed.

The body of the slain policeman is still at the morgue of the government-owned Braithwaite Memorial Specialist Hospital (BMSH) in Port Harcourt. Arrangements are being made for his burial.

Peterside said: “Your (Gift’s) husband laid down his life for the sake of Nigeria and democracy. We did not expect what happened in Okrika. We went to campaign but some criminals killed your husband in the presence of all of us. Even though you are mourning and crying, we owe him a debt of gratitude for the role he played in Okrika.

“We will stand by you and your children. We will not forget you. We are all parents and we feel the weight of what happened. We feel the pressure that his death will expose you to. We know what you are going through. God will comfort you.

“We are pleading with you to take the responsibility with courage and boldness, thereby moving forward. You need to brace yourself to the challenge. We will support you.

“Your children will go to school and be trained properly. We are very proud of your husband.

“APC leaders and members do not want violence. Serving the people should not be by force but through elections. Let the people freely decide the persons they want to serve them, not through violence, shooting, killing people, bombing, burning vehicles and houses.”

Ikanya described the Okrika attack as unprovoked and condemnable.

The APC chairman said four people were being treated at the hospital in Port Harcourt while 20 injured persons had been discharged.

Mrs Okorie expressed gratitude to APC leaders for the visit and assistance.

The widow described her husband as a fighter, who was always  wanted peace to reign in Rivers State and Nigeria.

Mrs Okorie, an indigene of Cross River State, who married her late husband in 2008, said his death was painful.

The policewoman was optimistic that God would bring peace to Rivers State and other parts of Nigeria.

She said: “I knew him as a fighter. He always stood on the good side. He fought for peace to reign.”

Peterside, a member of the House of Representatives, his allies and supporters narrowly escaped death at the Okrika rally.

Okrika, the headquarters of Okrika Local Government Area, is the hometown of the wife of President Goodluck Jonathan, Dame Patience, and the leader of the Niger Delta Vigilance Movement, “General” Ateke Tom.

  • Chukwumerije wants scholarships for athletes

    Chukwumerije wants scholarships for athletes

    • Clamours for taekwondo support

BEIJING Olympics bronze medalist, Chika Chukwumerije has called on the National Sports Commission (NSC) to consider awarding scholarships to athletes across all sports.

The Mechanical Engineering graduate of the Federal University of Owerri (FUTO)  believes these athletes must be empowered through scholarships so that some of them willing to further their education will proceed.

“I want people to know that after quitting sports some day, they (athletes) will go into other endeavours and they will become professionals in other fields. So the confidence from here is what they will take into other sectors and build the Nigeria we both are looking for. The only thing I am going to ask for is that most of them are in school, I personally ask if they can be given some form of sponsorship because those are the most important things. Sport is very important as well as winning the Olympics but for long term, when they leave here where do they sleep; do they have food?

“The ones that have businesses, is it working? Are we going to move from the street to the podium and back to the street? I say it is not a very good way to run things. We can give them the sponsorship and this is not much because how they feel outside the sport will determine the quality of medals they will give to us as a nation,” the All Africa Games medalist said.

“So do they eat three times  a day? Is their school fees paid? Do they have clothes to wear? Sometimes, do they have a little motorcycle to run around with? It might not cost much but the kick back from such initiatives will give us the Olympic medals we need and the feel-good feeling that every Nigerian craves from every sport that goes to represent the country.”

Chukwumerije, who is excited about the prospect of taekwondo said: “I am very happy about the awareness with regards to the electronic system in taekwondo. Last year during the same event, they (athletes) were struggling with equipment but this year I see a lot of confidence on the mat and I think that is a very good thing. Now the second thing I have seen is that there are some teams here that did not win medals but they have athletes that are very tall, physically I think that is very good and as the technical assistant, I have noted it down.  I have noted their names so that we will bring them into the national camps and test them. You know next year is a very important year for us. Next year is the World Championships and All Africa Games and we want to deliver, we want to do well. So this is just the start to discovering those athletes.”

He, however, admitted that tactically a lot still needs to be done.

“But I  still think there is a long way tactically, maybe not a long way but there is a lot of work to be done for them to compete at par with the likes of South Korea, United States, Mexico, Cote d’Ivoire and Egypt our main opposition and I am happy that we have done this. Next year we are going to need much more support in terms of a national training centre, going out for more tournaments, we want to have more partnerships and training with other teams. And we hope we can continue to count on the support of the National Sports Commission(NSC) and private industries that can look at taekwondo as the next best sport because we are the ones producing all the medals in Nigeria now.”

  • Mind Builders School awards six scholarships

Six Junior Secondary School (JSS) 1 pupils who excelled in the 2013/2014 entrance examination of Mind Builders High School, Ikeja, have been awarded a six-year scholarship by the school.

Three of them, Ailuelohia Oseghale, Dawodu Moyosore oluwa, and Adigun Bolu Anjola graduated from Mind Builders Nursery and Primary School; while the other three were from other primary schools.  They are: Olawore Mercy, of  Children Companion, Ogba, Ikeja Akinsola Oluwa Damilola of Sunnydale School, Ikeja; and 10 year-old Quadri Feranmi of Trinity Primary School, Mowe, Ogun State.

Explaining how they emerged during the school’s 2013/2014 Prize giving day last week, Chairman Board of Governors, Mr Bosun Falore said the school selected the best pupils in the entrance examination for a scholarship examination in which the six winners scored above 80 per cent.  He added that the scholarship is part of the school’s contributions to human development.

“We believe that as long as the foundation is good they can become super stars and we need to recognise it at this primary level so that in future when they are tracing their background, it would be traced to Mind Builders High School,” he said.

He said since introducing the scholarship scheme about three years ago, the school used to give the award to indigents students but decided this year to base it on merit.

He said to ensure that the students don’t play away their time and drop in their academic performance, a clause has been added that if they should drop below 75 per cent in their academics, the scholarship would be withdrawn.

Addressing the pupils, the Education Director, Mrs Bola Falore, said they must be positive and display a right attitude in all they do.

“They are very important because you are a life-long learner. You will always be on top when you have those two. You can have As in all your subject but you won’t go far without morals,” she said.

  • 98 indigent students get scholarships

A royal father and philanthropist, Odunwo of Ondo Kingdom, Chief Olabanji Akingbule, said he has awarded 1,700 bursaries to indigent students of Ondo State in the last 17 years.

Akingbule said this during the annual public lecture and award to celebrate his 89th birthday in Ondo Town.

According to him, no fewer than 100 brilliant students of Ondo State extraction  are offered bursary award worth over N3 million every year.

He said: “To whom much is given, much is expected. I thank God for giving me the grace to pay back Ondo Kingdom in several folds. Since I was a student in the United Kingdom (UK), I and my colleagues founded the Ondo Division Students and we sent money home for our schools to buy books in 1962. I started the scholarship at All Saints Anglican Church Ogbonkowo, Ondo before I formally instituted a foundation about 17 years ago.

“Each year through the foundation I give an average of N3.6 million to 100 brilliant, but indigent students across Ondo State. I have built lecture theatres at Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo and Wesley University of Technology, Ondo and my alma mater, Ondo Boys High School. This is apart from numerous charitable donations to the needy in the society.”

On what informed the scholarship, Akingbule said he was one of the awardees of Ondo Native Authority scholarship in the 1940s, adding that he started the foundation is to reciprocate the gesture.

Even after he may have passed on, Akinkugbe assured the initiative would be sustained with the income from his estate and the five million shares he owns at the Nigeria Breweries.

Akingbule, therefore, appealed to all to empower the youth and employ them in order to retain their knowledge.

This year’s scholarships include 32 beneficiaries from tertiary institutions, four concessionary awardees, and 62 secondary school awardees.

The 32 university undergraduates got N50,000 each, while N40,000 was given to three NCE students. Four concessionary awards of N30,000 each was made available to handicapped students, while 62 of awards were given to each  successful secondary school students.

Commenting on the award, Afenifere leader in Nigeria and the Diapora, Chief Reuben Fasoranti, said: “Although I am not surprised because he (Akingbule) is a product of scholarship. This is a noble idea that has grown wide and so many poor students have benefited.

Indeed, you are a blessing to Ondo State and Nigeria at large” Fasoranti said.
