  • Osun election peaceful – NSCDC

Mr Aboluwoye Akinwande, the State Commandant, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Osun State Command, on Saturday says the ongoing election in the state is so far peaceful.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Osun gubernatorial election got underway in the early hours of Saturday morning with a large turnout of voters who came out for the accreditation exercise.

Akinwande told NAN in an interview that the election was so far peaceful, adding that NSCDC officers were also on ground in all the polling units across the state to maintain peace.

“All the officers have been deployed to their various polling units, divisions and the state in general.

“They are already on ground and the election has started. While I was on patrol this morning, I saw a lot of people going to their various polling units and the polling units I passed through were very peaceful.

“There is no disturbance,’’ he said.

He, however, noted that there were certain pockets of challenges that had to do with the political status of most of the contestants.

“Let me start with APC; the APC candidate, who happens to be the former Chief of Staff of the state.

“The PDP candidate also happens to be a federal senator. The SDP contestant happens to be a former senator and a former deputy governor and he is still very active in politics.

“Also the ADP candidate happens to be a former Secretary to State Government of Osun State before he decamped to ADP.

“He has also been a grassroots politician from ACN to AD to even APC and now to ADP. So he is a grassroots man.

“So we have all these people contesting and when they are contesting, you will find out that there might be some pockets of challenges, ‘’he said.

Akinwande also noted that due to some of these challenges, some thugs had been arrested, while some have been charged to court.

According to him, these are some of the challenges we are having but thank God the challenges have been solved.

Akinwande, however, said that a huge number of NSCDC officers had been deployed to Osun to ensure peaceful conduct of the election.

“Aside from Osun, we have officers and men from Ogun, Lagos, Ondo, Kwara and Kogi, who are actively involved in this gubernatorial election; so you could imagine the type of deployment.

“There are also deployments from the National headquarters. We have from the Directorate of Rescue Management, Peace and Conflict and Kennel.

“We have officers from Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Squad, Chemical Biological Radioactive and Nuclear Explosives, among others.

“All these are just to tell you about the deployment and how active the NSCDC has been in ensuring a peaceful election in the state,’’ he said. (NAN)

  • Gemade may dump PDP for SDP

INDICATIONS have emerged former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chief Barnabas Gemade, who recently defected from the All Progressive Party (APC) and joined PDP may jump ship again.

Gemade is the senator representing Benue – North east senatorial zone otherwise known as zone A.

He defeated former Governor Gabriel Suswam in the 2015 PDP senatorial primary election.

Before his defection, Gemade had declared intention to seek re-election to the senate for the third time.

He and Suswam have purchased and returned their nomination forms on PDP platform.

Efforts by the Uche secondus- led PDP leadership to broker a peace deal between Gemade and Suswam failed, leaving both of them to go into the contest.

Our correspondent gathered Gemade may lose out of the power equation as Governor Samuel Ortom began his re-election campaign tour around the three senatorial zones and political blocs.

Ortom was in Jechira federal constituency comprising Vandeikya and Konshisha Local Government areas where elders of the zone unanimously endorsed him for second term.

Gemade, who hails from Konshisha, was conspicuously absent alongside his supporters.

The absence of Gemade, who defected alongside Ortom, is seen as a signal the PDP primary may not favour him.

But from all indications, Suswam is favoured to beat Gemade in the PDP race.

This is because before Gemade returned, PDP had already put in place a new EXCO of the party in Benue and the senatorial zone.

Even though the party was able to accommodate Ortom’s interest by partially dissolving the state EXCO to allow his men take some positions, Gemade met a brick wall.

There are indications the former PDP chairman has already secured the ticket for zone A in Social Democratic Party (SDP) in anticipation Suswam may pick the PDP ticket.

  • Kogi: I will work for revival of Ajaokuta complex, says SDP Senate aspirant

An aspirant for the Kogi Central Senatorial district in the forthcoming general election, Natasha Hadiza Akpoti, has said that her major policy trust if elected, would be the revitalization of the Ajaokuta Steel complex and all other ailing steel plants across Nigeria.
In a statement made available on Saturday in Lokoja after obtaining the Social Democratic Party (SDP) nomination form, Akpoti noted that a functioning Ajaokuta Steel complex holds the potential of generating huge employment opportunities, high revenue generation and technology transfer among other benefits.
She added that more needed to be achieved in the areas of steel laws, establishment of steel authority and ensuring that the necessary political will is engendered.
She stated: “When I stood against the privatisation of the Ajaokuta Steel Company, I did so because of my firm belief  that the company holds the future of our country. When I become a senator, I will not only work for the resuscitation of Ajaokuta Steel complex, but all other steel companies in Nigeria, that will use the product of Ajaokuta Steel as raw materials, and the country would be better for it.”
She added that she decided to venture into politics, because her constituents have been marginalized from the necessities of government in terms of social justice and economic development.
She said that the people have been neglected in the scheme of things in the country.
She however said that the people have now realized that government and governance is far away from them and there is the need for someone who is committed to their well-being to bridge the gap.
“I am stepping into politics of the central senatorial district of Kogi State to bridge this gap, so that I can make the difference, be the voice of the voiceless, provide support for the weakest in the society and the most marginalized people of Nigeria,” she said.
  • SDP: Court strikes out case against Omisore

An Osun State High Court in Osogbo on Monday struck out a suit challenging Senator Iyiola Omisore as the governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the September 22 state guber poll.

It would be recalled that two state officers of the SDP, Alhaji Rasheed Mayowa and Chief Azeez Alakinde-Ismaila, had approached the court to compel the party’s national body not to allow a fresh congress but to stand by the congress which produced the executives of SDP in the state in 2016 and which their tenure would expire by 2020.

The applicants also told the court that the congress which produced Senator Omisore as the party’s candidate was illegal having being conducted contrary to two respective court orders.

At the yesterday’s hearing, the applicants’ counsel, Barr. Olayinka Sokoya, argued that the matter was beyond the internal running of the party but was premised on the constitution of the party.

He further argued that the defendants’ disposition against his applications before the court be discountenance, noting that disobeying court orders had rendered everything done by Omisore’s group null and void.

Sokoya prayed the court to sack all the executives elected by the factional SDP congress led by Dr Bayo Faforiji and declare all actions taken so far as unconstitutional including, the primary it conducted which produced Senator Omisore.

He also asked to court to fully restore all powers back to the Chief Ademola Ishola led executive which produced an Iwo indigene, Barr. Kehinde Atanda, as the governorship candidate.

  • Go for political offices, SDP urges youths

The leadership of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Ondo State has urged youths to actively participate in politics in order to be part of the decision-making that will shape the future of the country.

Its chairman, Korede Duyile, spoke at the official declaration of Tajudeen Adefisoye, a youth contesting the seat of Idanre/Ifedore Federal Constituency.

Duyile said the masses were tired of voting the same set of people with the same ideology.

Also speaking, Tajudeen Adefisoye, said he decided to run on the platform of SDP because it had plans to allow youths to vie for positions.

Adefisoye said he decided to be part of the real change and liberate the people of Idanre and Ifedore by bringing meaningful development to the constituency.

At the event, Adefisoye was presented with the flag of the party officially, and was charged to continue to promote the party in and outside the state.

  • 2019: Fight for political offices, Youths urged

Youths in Ondo state have been charged to actively participate in politics and be part of stakeholders in the decision-making to overhaul the future of the country.

The state chairman of the Social Democratic Party(SDP), Korede Duyile, gave the charge at the official declaration of a youth leader, Tajudeen Adefisoye for the seat of Idanre/Ifedore Federal Constituency in the 2019 election.

Duyile said the masses were tired of voting the old set of people with the same ideology.

The chairman said SDP was on ground and most people that had shown interest in various positions were from notable and credible families that were well known to him as an indigene of Idanre himself.

He said “Our membership is already increasing in Idanre and in the state, more people are seeing our party as a credible platform, especially the youths, to fulfil their dreams”.

Adefisoye, who is in his mid-thirties, said he decided to run on the platform of SDP, because it had plans to allow youths to seek political positions.

Adefisoye said he decided to be part of the real change and liberate the people of Idanre and Ifedore by bringing meaningful development to the constituency.

According to him,” I am already assured of victory, there is no development in this town, we can’t be sending same old men to be representing us always.”

The Aspirant was later presented with the flag of the party and urged to continue promoting the party within and outside the state.

  • Abia SDP elects 36-member state EXCO

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Abia on Saturday elected a 36-member state executive committee, amidst complaints from Abia South Zone.

The exercise which took place in Umuahia  went on smoothly until the moderator and Chairman of the Congress Committee, Mr Effiong Unah, announced one Chukwudi Abangowe, as the Organising Secretary.

Thenationonline.net learnt that the zone had nominated one Chukwuemeka Akomas, reputed to be a founding member and chief financier of the party in the area, for the position.

In a spontaneous reaction, leaders and other members of the party from the zone staged a walk out from the venue of the congress to protest against the non-inclusion of Akomas.

The Zonal Woman Leader, Mrs Mary Linus, and other stakeholders in the zone, including Mr Dickson Asonye and Mr Frederick Okoh, alleged in an interview with Our Reporter that the zone was short-changed.

They said that the choice of Abangowe instead of  Akomas, “who nurtured the party from inception” was unacceptable to them.

“This is the end of SDP in Aba North and Aba South and Abia South Zone as a whole if they fail to reverse the decision.

“We conceded some positions to other zones as part of the party’s resolution in favour of harmonise.

“This decision is unacceptable to us because we do not know of any petition against Akomas before now,” said Asonye and Okoh.

Reacting to the complaint, the Congress Committee Chairman said that there was a petition against Akomas that was still pending before the party’s National Working Committee.

“We got a directive from the national headquarters of the party that there is a petition against Akomas, hence his nomination was dropped,” Unah said.

He described the congress as peaceful, saying that the protest was “a normal situation in a party congress.

“The Congress is peaceful. In some other parties, you experience worse things, including fighting, so the protest is like a drop of water in the ocean.”

NAN reports that all the positions were filled by consensus, subject to affirmation by the party members.

The list of the new executive, include Chief Chidi Nwosu (chairman), who was the Steering Committee Chairman, Mrs Juliet Nwabuike (Deputy Chairman) and Mr Okereke Ogbonna (Secretary).

In an acceptance speech, Nwosu expressed thanks to the delegates for the confidence the members reposed in him and promised to run an all-inclusive and open-door administration.

He said that the party would continue to intensify its membership drive ahead of the 2019 general elections.

  • Osun APC, PDP, SDP set for primaries

With the deadline set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the submission of the list of candidates and their running mates, political parties in Osun State are set for their shadow contests. ADESOJI ADENIYI reports that the race is more intense within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), with 29 contenders and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which has 20 aspirants.

THE race to succeed Governor Rauf Aregbesola, who will be stepping down in November after two terms as the Osun State helmsman, has gathered momentum. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has set a July 22 deadline for conclusion of primary election for all political parties which intend to participate in the September 22 governorship election.

By next week, all political parties are expected to have elected their candidates and sorted out all complaints and petitions against successful candidates. In line with the INEC deadline, the All Progressives Congress (APC), which had shifted its primary thrice, is set for the exercise today. The leading opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and the Social Democratic Party (SDP) have both picked July 20 (Saturday) to elect their flag bearers.

In all, no fewer than 50 aspirants from about six political parties wish to contest. In the APC, 29 aspirants are vying for the exalted position. In the PDP, 20 aspirants are in the race. The SDP has four aspirants. Six are using the Accord Party (AP) platform to realise their ambition.

    APC

Though there are 29 contenders in the race, only five of them have been campaigning to get the party’s nod for the race. They are the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Mr. Gboyega Oyetola; a retired Permanent Secretary, Engr. Adelere Oriolowo; House of Assembly Speaker Hon. Najeem Salaam; the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Moshood Adeoti; and business man, Ayoade Lawal.

The contest for the APC ticket has witnessed a lot of intrigues. This makes today’s primary very highly competitive. One of the most dominant factors in the contest is zoning. Stakeholders from Osun West senatorial district are insisting that it is their turn to produce the next governor after the expiration of Governor Aregbesola’s tenure. The other dominant factor is continuity agenda.

Those insisting that it is the turn of Osun West have continued to appeal to emotions of the people, arguing that only the West is yet to occupy the seat of the governor. They say the zone has not had the opportunity to govern the state, except for a period of two years during the aborted Third Republic, when the first elected governor of the state, the late Senator Isiaka Adeleke, occupied the seat briefly. They say Osun Central has spent 11 and a half years on the seat during the tenures of Chief Bisi Akande and Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola and that contestants from the zone should not be allowed to participate in the primary.

Aregbesola, from Osun East, is on the verge of completing his two four-year terms in November. These, they added, makes Osun West the only zone that is yet to govern the state for a considerable period of time. Therefore, they believe it would amount to injustice, if the governorship is not zoned to Osun West.

However, those rooting for a continuity of “the laudable projects, policies and programmes” of the Aregbesola administration argue that in the interest of democracy the race must be open to all aspirants.

In the wisdom of the party leadership, there is nothing like zoning in the APC constitution and, therefore, it should not be a decisive factor in choosing its flag bearer. Osun APC Chairman, Gboyega Famodun has been reminding aspirants rooting for zoning that “the contest is open to aspirants from three senatorial districts”. Going by the chairman’s declaration, all aspirants are eligible to participate in the process.

In bid to make the contest more open and transparent, the party leadership has decided to adopt a direct primary approach; rather than the use of delegates to elect the party’s standard bearer. Since the announcement was made, some stakeholders have mounted pressure on the party leaders to shift position on the matter.

Not surprisingly, the largest number of aspirants within the APC is from Osun West. They are 19 in all. The aspirants are: Alao Olabisi (Iwo Local Government), Oyebisi Alamu (Iwo) Dr. Isiaka Owoade (Irewole) Tunde Adediji (Aiyedaade), Hon. Akintayo Amere (Iwo) Alhaji Adeyemo Fatai (Aiyedaade), Babatunde Taiwo (Isokan), Ayoade Lawal (Iwo), Dr. Taofeek Olayinka (Iwo) and Mr. Oludayo Oyebanji (Irewole). Others are: Dr. Salam Folasayo (Ejigbo), Dr. Ezekiel Oyemomi (Ayedade), Benedict Olugboyega (Irewole), Mr. Adelere Oriolowo (Iwo), Mr. Peter Babalola (Irewole), Alhaji Moshood Adeoti (Iwo), Dr. Ismail Layonu (Ede North) and Mr. Mumini Raifu (Iwo). Mr. Bola Oyebamiji (Irewole) has already withdrawn from the race.

From Osun Central: Jolayemi Kamoru (Ila), Sunday Akere (Boluwaduro), Hon. Sulaimon Lasun Yusuff (Irepodun), Alhaji Adegboyega Oyetola (Boripe), Hon. Yinka Ajayi (Boripe) and Mr. Kunle Adegoke (Olorunda).

The contestants from Osun East are: Dr. Samuel Ibiyemi (Ife West), and Senator Jide Omoworare (Ife Central).

Of the above aspirants, only four or five  have contacts with the grassroots. Leading the pack is Oyetola. He ran a well-structured and organised campaign to sell himself to the people in the three senatorial districts. His campaign tours were thorough and his message was direct. He was stressing the need for continuity of good policies and programmes of the present administration. This, he said, would further position the state for greater tasks and prospects, if left in the hands of someone with competence and capacity.

Oyetola has described himself as the best man for the job, because he has been actively involved in formulation and implementation of policies and programmes of the government in the last eight years as Chief of Staff. He also flaunts his over 30 years experience and accomplishment in the “highly competitive private sector”. He promises an all-inclusive government for all strata of the society, including artisans, civil servants and pensioners, children, youths, women and the aged.

In his words: “As part of this government (the Aregbesola administration) for almost eight years as Chief of Staff, I will hit the ground running on assumption of office as governor. I need no briefing about where the work is and where we are going. Everything is in my brain. So, I am Mr. Continuity. I have a successful career in the very competitive private sector for over 30 years’ experience.

“So, I have the competence. I have integrity and more importantly I have a very cordial relationship with my Creator, whose fear of Him motivates and drives me to work conscientiously to impact positively on people’s lives, irrespective of their religion, ethnicity, economic and social status. As someone born, brought up and who attended schools in Osun up till my adult age, before venturing outside the state for exposure and further education, I will use my God-given talents to provide ample opportunities for all residents to exhibit their potential so that they can flourish in an atmosphere of love and peace. I know the importance of interconnection and interdependence of all sectors on one another.

“Therefore, I will not leave any sector unattended to, so that wealth can spread to the advantage of everyone and our state. My administration will consolidate on our present gains and do a lot more through an unprecedented sense of mission and visionary leadership devoid of narrow and sectional considerations that has no place in modern day democracy.”

Adeoti’s campaign tours have taken him all parts of the state. As former chairman of Iwo Local Government, chairman of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), on which Aregbesola rode to power in the face of a hostile administration at the centre, he is a familiar face and a household name in the politics of Osun State. No doubt, Adeoti has paid his dues politically and, therefore, he believes that he should succeed Aregbesola as governor. He promises to touch education, agriculture, tourism, health sectors, among other areas, if he becomes the governor.

Similarly, Salam is banking on his legislative experience as Speaker for two terms. He has gone round parts of the state, canvassing for support. He also wants to leverage on leading the 26-member parliament to work harmoniously with the executive, if he gets the chance to govern the state. He has been calling on the party leadership to provide  a level-playing field for all aspirants.

Oriolowo is another aspirant that has been campaigning vigorously. The Coordinator of the Osun State Rural Access Mobility Projects (RAMP) believes he is the right candidate party. He said: “I am a retired civil servant, as former Permanent Secretary, a pensioner and someone, who had handled many projects in rural and urban communities across the state.” As one of the aspirants from Osun West, like Adeoti, Oriolowo believes that the clamour for zoning will boost his chances.

Also, Yussuf, who is the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, has been campaigning. He promised to provide intervention in education, health, agricultural sectors, if he gets the chance to become governor. During his campaign tours around the state, he assured the people that he would engage the youths in the development of the state. He also promised to industrialise the state, saying his contacts around the globe will help him attract investments to the state.

    PDP

The PDP has also provided a platform for many aspirants to seek opportunities to actualise their aspirations. What makes it easy for many of the aspirants to come on board is because the governorship slot has been zoned to Osun West. Its Chairman, Hon. Soji Adagunodo, said what was important was giving all zones equal participation. Like the APC, the PDP also has a large number of aspirants in the race. It originally stood at 20. They include: Hon. Adejare Bello, Senator Felix Ogunwale, Senator Olasunkanmi Akinlabi, Senator Bamgbetan, Senator Ademola Adeleke, Dr. Lere Oyewumi, Mr. Nathaniel Oke, Mr. Kayode Oduoye, Alhaji Fatai Akinbade, Dr. Ayoade Adewopo, Alhaji Waliyu Adebayo Oladosu, and Prof. Adeolu Durotoye.

Others are: Chief Gbenga Owolabi, Hon. Albert Adeogun, Dr. Akin Ogunbiyi, Mr. Jide Adeniji, Mr. Tunde Adewinbi, Prof. Remi Aworemi, Mr. Tunde Esho, Mr. Samuel Jeje, Mr. Rasheed  Olawale, Dr. Amidu Tadese and Mr. Lere Akande. But recently the screening committee for the party’s primary, headed by Austin Opara, pruned down the number to eleven. Aspirants that have cleared to contest are: Senator Olasunkanmi Akinlabi (Ayedaade Local Government in Osun West), Dr. Olalere Oyewumi from (Irewole in Osun West), Mr. Nathaniel Oke (Ayedaade, Osun West), Senator Felix Ogunwale (Boripe, Osun Central), Alhaji Fatai Akinbade (Ola-Oluwa, Osun West), Mr. Jide Adeniji (Ila, Osun Central), Dr. Akin Ogunbiyi (Ayedire, Osun West), Dr. Ayoade Adewepo (Ife Central, Osun East), Hon. Rafiu Bello (Ede, Osun West), Senator Ademola Adeleke (Ede North, Osun West), and Prof. Adeolu Durotoye (Osogbo, Osun Central).

The PDP is seriously making efforts to stage a comeback to the political scene in Osun State, after shaking off its many challenges, particularly factionalisation that had bedeviled the party. But the exit of Senator Iyiola Omisore from the fold was a relief to many chieftains of the party.

However, political analysts believe the party will face another round of crisis in picking a candidate to fly its flag at the governorship election. Nevertheless, in the thinking of some party chieftains, including Hon. Adejare Bello, who was former Speaker of the state House of Assembly, the PDP in Osun State may pick its governorship candidate through a consensus arrangement. To avoid massive defection of members likely to be aggrieved after the primary poll, if their choice was not picked, it was gathered that the opposition party may consider a consensus candidate with inputs from all sections of the party. Though to get a consensus might be difficult because many of the aspirants hold the strong views that they are better qualified than the rest. So, harmonising diverse interests within the party, no doubt will be an herculean task for the party leadership.

    SDP

Senator Iyiola Omisore and Otunba Oluyemisi Oladeji are the two leading governorship aspirants of the SDP. Since Omisore defected to the party, from the PDP, it has been one crisis or the other. It started with the statement credited to the party chairman, Ademola Isola, that Omisore was not recognised yet as member of the SDP, let alone to be addressed as an aspirant on the party’s platform. His declaration caused a stir among party loyalists. This led to a counter claim by a faction of the party that Omisore is a member. Few weeks after, the Omisore group held ward and state congresses, where his ally, Dr. Bayo Faforiji, emerged the chairman, despite a court injunction against it.

For the Accord Party, there are no fewer than three aspirants: Bunmi Ibiloye, Babatunde Olaniyiloye and Pade Okunola. The aspirants have been busy mobilising supporters for their aspirations. For the Alliance for Democracy (AD) and Kowa Party, an architect Olugbenga Akintola and a university don, Prof. Oluseyi Fabiyi, have been picked as candidates.

For most of the parties, the real race for the September 222 governorship race would start after their primaries on July 22.

  • PDP, APC overheating Ekiti ahead of poll, says SDP

The candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Ekiti State, Mr Akinloye Ayegbusi, has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of overheating the state ahead of the July 14 governorship election.

The SDP candidate alleged that the two parties have been locked in a war of attrition and raising false accusations and counter-accusations instead of telling the electorate what they have in stock for them.

Ayegbusi urged the APC and the PDP to stop dragging the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) into their messy war, and face their campaigns.

Ayegbusi who spoke this as the ward-to-ward campaign of the SDP moved to communities in Ekiti East Local Government Area, said he is seeking the mandate to serve the people.

He said he threw his hat into the  ring to help to liberate the people from poverty and untold hardship occasioned by the misrule of the APC and the PDP administrations.

Some of the communities the campaign team of SDP visited included Omuo, Isinbode and Ilasa.

The first point of call was Isinbode where the SDP candidate paid homage to the monarch, the Onisin, Oba Emmanuel Adeyemi. He appealed to the royal father to support the SDP for the much desired dividend of democracy to reach the community.

He charged the people of the area to think of their future before casting  their votes, noting that their future lies in the SDP government which will bring back prosperity to Ekiti State. The Onisin later prayed for Ayegbusi success at the coming poll. He urged his followers to embrace peace before and during the election.

  • Osun 2018: SDP clears Omisore

The leadership of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Osun State, has declared the former deputy governor of the state, Senator Iyiola Omisore, a bonafide member of the party. The state chairman of the party, Hon. Demola Ishola, at the inauguration oF the steering committee of the party in Osogbo, disclosed that many notable politicians are coming to join the party before the September 22 governorship election.

He described the SDP as the party of the masses, saying plans are underway for national leaders of the party, including Dr. Yemi Farounbi, to come down to Osun for a and  welcome new members into the party. He charged members of the party to start house to house mobilisation of people into the party. Dignitaries at the event include former member of the House of  Representatives, Hon. Bade Falade,  former Commissioner for Works in the state, Dr. Bayo Faforiji, and former legal adviser of the Peoples Democratic Party in the South West, Barr. Ojo Williams.
