    • Educated population key to national growth, says First Lady

The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has restated the vital role education plays in national development.

She said a well-educated population is the foundation for a prosperous and progressive society.

Mrs. Tinubu said this when she hosted the management team of a Germany-based philanthropic organisation, Merck Foundation, yesterday in Abuja.

The First Lady emphasised that no society can truly advance without prioritising education.

She reaffirmed her commitment to expanding scholarship opportunities for Nigerian youths, stressing that education remains a top priority for the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“I believe once you have an educated population, the country will grow in bounds. It would be a disaster to hand over the future to an uneducated generation,” she said.

During the courtesy visit, the foundation honoured Senator Tinubu with the title “More Than A Mother” Campaign Ambassador.

A statement by her Senior Special Assistant on Media, Busola Kukoyi, said the designation recognises the First Lady’s longstanding advocacy for women’s empowerment, education, and reproductive health across Nigeria and Africa.

Mrs. Tinubu highlighted key interventions of her pet project, the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), particularly in the education sector.

The First Lady noted that RHI had facilitated scholarship schemes and learning support for underprivileged students nationwide, with plans to broaden the reach and impact in the months ahead.

Commending Merck Foundation for its extensive support in the health and education sectors, Senator Tinubu lauded its provision of scholarships for Nigerian students to study medicine, with a focus on reproductive and fertility health.

“Infertility and the stigma surrounding it are still significant issues in Africa,” she said.

Merck Foundation Chai   rman, Prof. Frank Stangenberg-Haverkamp, who led the delegation, said the organisation was pleased to partner the First Lady and her Renewed Hope Initiative to further expand its work in Nigeria.

“Due to your efforts and dedication to the welfare of women, girls, and education, we are honoured to appoint you as the ‘More Than A Mother’ Campaign Ambassador,” he said.

Stangenberg-Haverkamp sought a deeper collaboration between the foundation and the Office of the First Lady, assuring his hostess that Nigeria remains a key focus of Merck’s work in Africa.

“It gives young girls the opportunity to have a better life and overcome the stigma of not having children,” he said.

The CEO of Merck Foundation, Dr. Rasha Kelej, explained that the organisation’s mission includes ending child marriage, promoting girls’ education, and empowering women at all levels.

She added: “In you, the foundation finds a worthy partner, willing and able to expand the frontiers of a shared cause.”

Through its ongoing partnership with African nations, Merck Foundation has provided hundreds of scholarships and training opportunities, particularly in the medical field, to underserved communities.

Its collaboration with the First Lady of Nigeria is expected to deepen impact in maternal health, gender equality, and youth education.

  • Senator Tinubu urges book stakeholders to embrace tech

Lawmaker representing Lagos Central Constituency in the Senate, Mrs Oluremi Tinubu, has urged Nigerians to embrace technological advancements in publishing so the country is not left behind.

Speaking at the International Conference of the 18th Nigerian International Book Fair (NIBF) at the Multipurpose Halls of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), which she chaired, Mrs Tinubu told stakeholders in the book industry that technological upgrade was necessary for international collaborations to be beneficial.

“Technology is taking over the world and every facet of our lives.  When we choose to ignore technological advancement in certain fields, we are in essence getting ready to be left behind by the rest of the world. With several other countries participating in this fair, it is apparent that to stay relevant and adequately collaborate with counterparts across the world, we need an upgrade of our publishing and distribution networks,” said Mrs Tinubu, who was represented by Mrs Abiodun Elegushi, a former sole administrator in Victoria Island Local Council Development Area (LCDA).

Mrs Tinubu also condemned piracy and promised to protect authors and the book industry.

“Being a published author myself, I understand the fears and challenges that come with the territory.  One of these is the issue of piracy and copyrights.  Unless and until our laws are implemented to protect creative work, it will continue to be a problem.

“In my role as senator, I will continue to support initiatives and legislations that protect Nigerian authors and every aspect of the value chain.  I am also open to ideas and suggestions on how we can better protect the interests of concerned parties,” she said.

In his keynote address titled: Optimising New Technology in Book Development and Distribution for the Promotion of Book Trade in Africa, Executive Director, Sidmach Technologiesa, Mr Mike Olajide, who was represented by Mr Lanre Basamta, said fighting piracy had become even more important in the technology-driven era as a result of digital piracy.

Nevertheless, he said various effective software now exist to fight piracy.

“Facing the obvious truth that if we do not kill piracy, it will kill the publishing industry – it is time for authors and publishers to take a stand and fight the monster called piracy.

“Technology will continue to transform our lives, not leaving out fundamental things like books. We can expect that more technology will emerge in the coming years to promote publishing, distribution and trade of books.

“We must be willing to accept and deploy technology, not only to optimise how we publish and distribute books, but also how we promote book trade by combating piracy,” he said.

In his speech, Chairman Nigerian Book Fair Trust (NBFT), Gbadega Adedapo, appealed to the government to provide a level-playing ground for book industry to thrive.

“We desire and would appreciate if the government could look into the following: special low-tariffs on educational and printing materials; revival of our moribund paper manufacturing industries; grants to encourage authors, publishers and book distributors to keep doing the creative work,” he said.

“As Christians, we must eliminate everything that stands between us and eternity. Beyond this, we must also conduct an assessment of our lives to ensure that we are walking in God’s plan of salvation and redemption for mankind.

“I must also use this opportunity to commend the largely peaceful conduct of the elections and to urge us all to commit to ensuring that we play our various parts and make the necessary sacrifice to take Nigeria to the Next Level as exemplified by the life of Jesus Christ. In spite of the challenges we face as a Nation, there is a need to be resolute in our support for the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR to enable us consolidate on the gains of the last four (4) years.

  • Ambode hails Senator Tinubu for her ‘life changing projects’

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode yesterday hailed Senator Oluremi Tinubu for devoting constituency funds to life changing projects.

Inaugurating the Drug Rehabilitation and Skill Acquisition Centre built by the senator in Ajah, he described it as a centre built in honour of an All Progressives Congress (APC) leader in Lagos Central, Prince Tajudeen Olusi.

The governor described the senator as a dogged, committed, consistent and determined woman, noting that despite the challenges she faced in the course of the project, which she began in 2012, she ensured its completion.

“So much has been said by everyone on what she stands for. However, if I call her a dogged fighter, I will not be wrong. She has spent two terms in the Senate and has embarked on more constituency projects than any other senator. It’s a confirmation of how she fights for her community.

“This is a project that began in 2012. She is relating the story of how the 22 community leaders (baales) put her on her toes and because she fought back, this is why we are here this morning.

“If I say she is a very consistent person and a determined woman, I am not wrong. She has told you how she put us on our toes. We are happy that the resources she has committed to this project did not go down the drain. I thank her for putting us on our toes,” Ambode said.

He added: “We all know what taking care of the needy entails, especially for a drug rehabilitation centre of this magnitude that has been put in place to take care of those ones who are on the streets without help.

“In addition to this drug rehab centre, there is a skill acquisition centre to complement the need of whoever we are able to rehabilitate and empower them to become relevant in the community.”

The governor directed the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation and the Ministry of Youth and Social Development to ensure that the facility becomes operational before May 29.

In her welcome address, Senetor Tinubu said the project was facilitated through her 2012 constituency intervention project to address the menace and devastating consequence of drug abuse to youths.

She hoped that the centre would help reverse the statistics that 40 per cent of youths indulged in the use of drugs, including marijuana, codeine, among others.

Prince Olusi thanked the senator for her gesture, saying it was a special honour for him to be recognised.

“I am very grateful that this project is dedicated to me. It’s a thing of joy. I thank Senator Oluremi Tinubu, she has shown that she has the requisite qualification and suitability to undertake this job because some are educated, but are not suitable,” he said.

  • Senator Tinubu to Lagos women: vote for APC candidates

    •My govt won’t neglect women, says Sanwo-Olu

All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, yesterday urged women in Lagos State to vote for the party’s candidates in February 16 and March 2 elections.

She chided the main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and other “mushroom parties” as being nowhere to be found in the Centre of Excellence.

Waving the broom, the symbol of the ruling party, and bursting into partisan songs, the Yeye Asiwaju of Lagos, also charged elected officers and politicians to always reward the contributions of women to their victory at the polls.

She said: “When you get there, please, remember the women.”

The senator representing Lagos Central spoke at a rally organised by the Lagos State APC Women Leader, Princess Jumoke Okoya-Thomas, at the Campus Square Stadium, Lagos.

APC women and other supporters from 57 local government areas stormed the venue as from sunrise, dancing and rejoicing. On the stage was the ace musician, Queen Salawatu Abeni, who thrilled the crowd to partisan songs.

The rally was attended by APC governorship candidate Babajide Sanwo-Olu; his wife, Dr. Ibijoke; his running mate, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat; his wife, Oluremi; party chairman Alhaji Tunde Balogun; Southwest APC Women Leader Chief Kemi Nelson; former Deputy Governors Sarah Sosan and Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire; former Deputy Speakers Adio-Badmus and Toun Adediran; Women Affairs Commissioner Mrs. Akinbule Yusuf; former Sports Commissioner Segun Dawodu; Mrs. Fausat Gbadebo; Mrs. Kafilat Ogbara, many market women and students.

Sanwo-Olu, who doffed his cap for the women, requested for their bloc blessings for the Sanwo-Olu/Hamzat ticket.

He assured them that he would not let them down, if elected.

Thanking the women, who he described as good mothers of the state, the APC flag bearer promised that they would always have the last say in the initiation and implementation of government policies.

Sanwo-Olu, who spoke in Yoruba and English, said: “You are very important as mothers, wives and backbone of families. This election is your election. It is for you. All the plans we are making are for you. When you plan for women, you plan for the whole town. Women will be included in government and governance. We will promote a culture of inclusion. You will not be marginalised.”

Urging the women to vote and defend their votes, he added: “Vote for President Muhammadu Buhari, Yeye Asiwaju Tinubu, Bayo ‘Pepperito’ Osinowo, Senator Yayi Adeola and other House of Representatives candidates on February 16.

“Vote for us and House of Assembly members on March 2. Wake up early and mobilise for the polls. Vote and wait until the votes are counted. We will cater for your interest. We will not forget you. The election is for the security of your future.”

Sanwo-Olu regretted that the PDP government failed Nigerians for 16 years, advising Lagosians to reject the party at the polls.

He disputed the PDP’s claim that Lagos was in bondage, saying the party was peddling falsehood.

Urging the women to gird their loins, the flag bearer said APC would achieve victory and the fruits of the victory would be for all Lagosians.

Mrs Orelope Adefulire said: “We want progress across the sectors. We want a government of continuity at the centre and Lagos State and all the dividends of democracy will follow. Let each one of you go and mobilise one hundred people to vote for APC candidates: the President, National Assembly candidates, our governorship candidate and House of Assembly candidates.”

Mrs Akinbule-Yusuf said: “Get your permanent voter’s cards (PVCs) ready and remember to use your index finger to vote during the elections.”

“Realising the weight of this responsibility, we must approach the general elections determined to exercise our civic within the ambits of law and devoid of selfish interest and gain. You must embrace peaceful elections, not letting your conscience or votes be bought.

“The start of the year determines largely, the rest of it. Thus, we must go into the New Year determined to be better and to do better. 2019 should not be the year of unrealised goals and visions. Start well, start early, and keep at it.”

  • Senator Tinubu hails Ambode’s wife for youth fiesta’s success

Wife of Lagos State governor, Mrs Bolanle Ambode, yesterday got encomiums for her contribution to the sustenance of Musical Youth Fiesta Initiative (MYFI) in the last three years.

Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the founder of the initiative and lawmaker representing Lagos Central, specially praised Mrs Ambode before a large audience at the eighth edition of the musical fiesta.

She prayed for the governor’s wife for her “relentless effort” to keep the fiesta stronger since she got involved in 2015.

This year’s event with the theme: I Am, was held at Expo Centre of the Eko Hotels and Suites on Victoria Island in Lagos.

The audience comprised clergymen, top government officials, young choristers, pupils, teachers and Very Important Personalities (VIPs), including the state’s All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu; his running mate, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat; former governor’s wife of Osun State, Alhaja Sherifat Aregbesola; Lagos APC Woman Leader, Jumoke Okoya-Thomas and Hajia Abba Folawiyo, among others.

For Mrs Ambode’s commitment to the ideal of the fiesta and the happiness of children for whom it was conceived, Mrs Tinubu noted that the yearly event continued to grow stronger.

The senator said she was proud of Mrs Ambode while beneficiaries of the fiesta would not forget her impacts in their lives.

She said: “I want to celebrate the mother of our children in the state, Mrs Ambode. She has been very helpful for the sustenance of this musical fiesta. Since the day she bought into the vision of the initiative, she has never disappointed us. She makes resources available for the event to be hosted.

“I specially appreciate you for investing your time, energy and resources on this ideal of raising a responsible generation of youths. God will honour you wherever you go. Your children will see their children’s children walk the land of honour. God will bless you and your husband (Governor Akinwunmi Ambode) because you have supported a cause that is dedicated to God.

“I also thank the First Lady for what she has done to me personally. If I didn’t see helpers when I had this vision, I couldn’t have got it done alone. All of these things put together here today are not done by me only; a lot of people, including Mr and Mrs Rauf Aregbesola, contributed to this in no small measures. God will honour you all.”

Mrs Ambode said she bought into the vision of the fiesta because she discovered it was conceived for soul-searching and spiritual development.

The governor’s wife noted that the event had been mentoring children towards realising their God-given talents.

She said she was happy to join Senator Tinubu in her effort to instil the fear of God in the hearts of young people and inculcate positive values that would make children to become responsible to their families and the society.

Mrs Ambode said: “I commend our distinguished Senator Oluremi Tinubu, our mother and the convener of this musical initiative, for being steadfast in sustaining the fiesta since the maiden edition was held in 2011.

“We appreciate our distinguished senator and mummy for all the successes recorded since the fiesta started. It has continued to make positive impacts on our youths.

“I enjoin our young people to look beyond the excitement and enjoyment that normally come with the event, but focus on the objective of the fiesta, which is to help steer your musical talents in the honour of God and personal success. As youths, you must embrace good character and attitude that should be worthy of emulation among your peers.”

In his exhortation, Pastor Lekan Adesina, who spoke on the theme: What’s in a name? urged youths to portray good names.

The cleric said God usually identifies with people who project good names through their actions.

Taking a reading from Isaiah 40:10, Adesina said the purpose of the fiesta’s theme was for believers to understand the purpose of God’s presence in their lives.

He urged the beneficiaries to choose names that would make God defeat forces of destabilisation in the lives.

At the event, the 20 participants of MYFI Leadership Academy for Girls were graduated and presented with their certificates.

Ten of them were specially rewarded for displaying high leadership qualities during the course of the programme.

Margret Moyosore Solola, a pupil of Federal Government College (Technical) Secondary School in Akoka, was named the Best Participant in the 2018 Class at the leadership academy.

Senator Tinubu said punctuality and eagerness to participate in sessions were part of the qualities used to pick the best in the class. The initiator said the MYFI Academy had produced 80 leaders since it was established four years ago.

She said: “The leaders are going to be lights in the world. Wherever they go, they shine to their brightest intensity and stand out among their peers.”

The event also featured musical renditions by choirs of various denominations and special prayer session for Nigerian youths.

Borno State Governor Alhaji Kashim Shettima, who appeared briefly at the event, had a short conversation with Senator Tinubu and other political leaders at the event.

MYFI is a private initiative of Senator Tinubu mentoring young people in music, dance and drama, with objectives to improve their talents and raise generations of responsible youths.

  • Senator Tinubu opens capacity centre

The Senator Oluremi Tinubu Capacity Development Centre for Skill Acquisition has been inaugurated in Lagos Mainland Local Government area of Lagos.

Amid fanfare, the centre was opened by Senator Oluremi Tinubu, who is representing Lagos Central Senatorial District in the Upper Chamber.

Some party leaders in the district also witnessed the event.

According to the Lagos Mainland Local Government Chairman, Mrs Omolola Essien, Senator Tinubu has distinguished herself in personality, character, and above all, in the competent manner with which she discharge her primary assignment as a senator.

“You have spoken for the voiceless, you have touched the lives of the common people within your senatorial district, the aged have caused to smile, the youth are not left out in the discharge of your responsibility as a senator. It is in the light of these and several others I could not mention due to exigency of time that we have decided to name our capacity development centre after you as a way of identifying with all that you have done for the electorate, particularly in your quest at reducing unemployment among the youth,” she said.

The centre, she said, is also targeted at exposing the primary school pupils to the use computer at early stage.

She said: “As a responsible government, it behoves on us to deliver dividends of democracy to the masses in line with the dictates and manifestoes of our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC). The idea of constructing a capacity development centre was actualised three years ago during my tenure as the Executive Secretary out of the desire to eliminate the stress our pupils go through to access computer education. Until now, our pupils in Lagos Mainland Local Government have to go to computer centre in Makoko for their weekly computer training. The construction of the first Capacity Development Centre in Ansar-Ud-Deen Primary School, Odunfa in Ebute-Meta East, ensured the training of over 250 pupils after its completion.

“The impressive success achieved in the effective utilisation of the centre, coupled with the need to take care of the West axis of the council,  motivated us to come up with another capacity development centre but in a more magnificent, versatile and computerised manner.

“The completion of the Senator Oluremi Tinubu Capacity Development Centre was right on time as it coincides with the end of the year’s public primary school academic session. We, therefore, partnered with TechQuest to deliver training to 1,000 pupils doing the 2018 summer holiday free of charge. This helped in no small measure to engage the pupils during the long holiday period. It is also worth mentioning that in October, the Senator Oluremi Tinubu Capacity Development Centre was designated as the first Local Government enabled centre in Lagos State under the “CODE LAGOS” programme.

“I am delighted to note that the Global Google Africa Code Week was celebrated at the Ansar-Ud-Deen Primary School, Odunfa and the newly built Senator Oluremi Tinubu Capacity Development Centre.”

The centre, the council boss said, will be judiciously used to bring the best out of the pupils.

Senator Tinubu thanked the council for naming the centre in her name.

She said it is not only an honour for her and her family but also to all APC members in this council and great number of our citizens.

“I have no doubt about the ability and capability of the leadership of this administration in giving and delivering the dividends of democracy to the people. Honourable chairman, I commend you for this project and others you have delivered to your people and I believe that more is coming for the benefits of the people as well. I also commend your team for the unalloyed cooperation and team work. I say well done,” she said.
