  • Senator Tinubu seeks unity ahead of 2019

SENATOR representing Lagos Central Oluremi Tinubu yesterday urged All Progressives Congress (APC) members to unite ahead of the 2019 general elections.

She spoke at Eti-Osa Ward E, located at Oyinkan Abayomi Drive in Ikoyi area of Lagos, where she participated in the Senatorial and House of Representatives primaries.

Mrs. Tinubu, who represented the district two times at the Senate, was being returned for a third term.

The senator hailed the people of her constituency for returning her unopposed.

She promised she would not disappoint her supporters and urged them to unite ahead of the 2019 elections.

“As we embark on the imminent elections, our politics should epitomise patriotic labour and selfless service to the community.

“Our vote is our right. Hence, we must exercise this right within the ambit of law by refusing to be a party to vote-buying or selling, and ensuring a peaceful election devoid of violence, chaos and upheavals.

“Together, we must ensure that our democratic process is sustained and that we embrace government efforts to transform our economy and make Nigeria a better place for all,” she said.

As at 1:09 p.m., when Senator Tinubu arrived, there were no electoral officers on ground for accreditation and to conduct the election by affirmation.

  • Community policing will end security challenges, says Senator Tinubu

Senator Oluremi Tinubu yesterday reiterated the need for the establishment of community policing to augment the Police’s crime control tactics.

The senator, who spoke at an interactive session on community policing, organised by the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Agency  (LNSA), said the country was under policed, stressing the need for collaboration with security groups to provide information and reduce the fear of crime in neighbourhoods.

With the theme: “Community policing and stakeholders, Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC) as pathway,” the seminar was part of activities to commemorate the agency’s two-year anniversary.

Senator Tinubu said the need to ensure that the average Nigerian felt safe outweighed fears of possible abuse of state police by governors, adding that checks and balances could be emplaced to forestall such occurrences.

Represented by the Director of Organisation, Lagos Central Senatorial District, Wahab Alawiye-King, Tinubu said the topic was apt in the light of current security challenges across the country and ongoing discussions on state police.

She said: “Recent occurrences indicate an increase in crime and other social vices such as cultism, kidnapping, armed robbery, oil pipeline vandalism, which have posed security challenges to us as a nation, while sabotaging economic growth and development.

“The dire state of our security situation has been attributed to increase in unemployment rates, insufficient equipment for the police formations and insufficient police personnel, which have led to ineffective policing and the collapse of our internal security system.

“Let it be reiterated that Nigeria is grossly under policed. With a population close to 200 million policed by less than 400,000 cops, we have low ration of a policeman to 500 people. This figure also includes the number of policemen attached to government officials, notable and influential personalities.

“You can imagine how many policemen in actual fact, are devoted to policing the populace. Therefore, crime control tactics must be augmented with community policing in conjunction with various local security groups to provide timely information and reduce the fear of crime in our neighbourhoods.

“The government needs to restrategise and take giant steps to confront the situation. In doing this, discussions on amendment of the constitution to accommodate the establishment of state police have begun.

“I must state clearly that the divergent views on the merit or otherwise of state policing are not without their bases. It is my opinion, however, that the need to ensure that the average Nigerian feels safe outweighs the fear of abuse by governors. What we can do to prevent abuse is ensure checks and balances that will ensure that they fulfil their mandate only.”

Senator Tinubu advised the LNSC to continue to rise to their responsibilities by providing timely reports of commission or intent to commit crime in their localities.

“You must not compromise the confidence reposed in you by the government and the good people of Lagos. I urge you to be diligent, committed and honest in your assignment,” she said.

The Chairman, LNSA, Israel Ajao, a retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG), had urged the operatives to do more of intelligence-gathering in their localities so that crimes could be prevented.

Calling for the establishment of community policing across the country, he said rivalry, friction between the police and such agencies could be avoided if they understood that their roles were complementary.

LNSC Lagos Division Commander Bashiru Giwa-Bioku said the division recorded 1048 incidents between April last year and June 2018, adding that 63 were resolved domestically and 134 transferred to the police for further action.

Also at the event were the Executive Secretary, Lagos State Security Trust Fund (LSTF), Dr. Abdulrasak Balogun; Executive Director, Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), Adetokunbo Mumuni; Ishola Laguda and Area ‘A’ Commander, Danladi Umar, an Assistant Commissioner of Police  (ACP), among others.

“This is why I have stayed committed to empowering as many of our constituents as possible, bearing in mind that every job is honourable and there is dignity in labour. We cannot continue to wait for perfect conditions or hand-me-downs. We must start to look inwards to see what we can offer.”

Tinubu was not happy that whenever there were job opportunities, “we were unable to field candidates to take advantage of them because our youths have failed to meet the pre-requisite requirements”.

She cited a case where her constituency was requested to nominate three youths for enlistment in the Nigeria Police. According to her, “we were able to find only one nominee who had completed the online application form before the deadline”.

The Chairman, Senate Committee on Environment, said the time we live in require that we embrace technological advancements because most modern jobs require online application. “I must urge us all to be prepared, stay informed and move with the times. Check for the many opportunities that abound online  as this will prevent waste of similar opportunities.”

In pursuance of her commitment to ensuring that the youth are gainfully employed, the senator stated that under her Youth Empowerment and Skills Acquisition Scheme (YESAS), “31 youths selected from the 13 local government and local council development areas (LCDAs) that make up the Lagos Central Senatorial District were presented with tricycles and the cash gift of N50,000 each.

She told the audience that names of 300 youths were forwarded to the National Directorate of Employment (NDE) through the slot given to Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. The beneficiaries, she said, have started acquiring skills, ranging from cosmetology to mobile phone repairs.

Tinubu also reported that the construction of drainage at Jebara Close, off  Ijora Causeway, which was facilitated by her through the Ministry of Environment had been completed. She said the completion of the project would prevent water accumulation, particularly in the rainy season and promote healthy living of people in that environment.

The high point of the event was the presentation of 255 GCE forms to LGs and LCDAs chairmen for distribution in their areas and the distribution of power generators and N50,000 cash to each of 19 youths.

The leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC ), Lagos Central, Prince Tajudeen Olusi, commended the senator for her penchant in lifting the people in her constituency through various empowerment programmes. He implored the beneficiaries not to sell the equipment, but to make use of them to earn a living.

Lagos APC Chairman, Alhaji Tunde Balogun, said he was not surprised with what Senator Tinubu was doing to alleviate poverty in her constituency because when she was the First Lady of Lagos State, she brought succour to many families that had lost hope through her New Era Foundation.

Prominent people that attended the meeting were the Lagos monarch, Oba Rilwan Akiolu; Oba of Igbobi-Sabe, Oba Owolabi Adeniyi; Deputy Speaker, Lagos House of Assembly, Hon. Wasiu Esinlokun; former APC Chairman, Chief Henry Ajomale;  Lagos APC Woman Leader, Hon. Jumoke Okoya-Thomas;  APC  Vice Chairman (Lagos Central), Hon. • Senator Tinubu lauds ‘Bonga oil spill’ judgment

Chairman, Senate Committee on the Environment, Senator Oluremi Tinubu,  has lauded the judgment of the Federal High Court upholding the $3.6bn fine levied against Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) in respect of the 2011 Bonga Oil Spill.

In December 2011, during Shell’s exploratory activities within OML 118, the Company’s vessel at the Bonga Deep Offshore spilled about 40,000 barrels equivalent to six million four hundred thousand (6,400,000) litres of crude oil into the sea.

Following this, the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) gave a fine of $1.8b as compensation for damages done to the environment and affected communities, and another $1.8b as punitive damages.

However, Shell instituted an action alleging that the agency’s exercise of its enforcement function was in contravention of the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).

‘‘The decision of the court dismissing the suit and upholding the fine is a victory for our environment and the affected communities. Beyond ensuring the remediation of these areas, it will also serve as deterrent to other players in the oil sector,” Senator Tinubu said.

She said the judgment would set the trend for punitive measures to International Oil Companies who operate in contravention of the law and evade liability.

While calling for strengthening of Institutions, the Senator said the on-going amendment to the NOSDRA Act, if eventually passed, would better position the agency to defend the integrity of our environment as it affects the Oil Sector.

She urged women to speak up and dialogue.

She said: “The inability of women to access loans and credit facilities is widespread. In spite of data showing women to be better managers and entrepreneurs, the deterrence on women seeking to own land and property is obvious in the constitution.

“Women are prone to trafficking, sexual exploitation and gender based violence. There is the inaccessibility of education for women, owing to gender stereotype. And where they are educated, they don’t have equal opportunity due to discrimination.

“This is why I am particularly saddened by the statement attributed to some of the girls who escaped the Boko Haram attack, who have given up on education and have stated that they will not be going back to school.

“If we must canvass for accessibility and affordable education for the girl-child, we must ensure that these places of learning are safe and secured.
