    • Lawmaker empowers 650 widows with N16m

Since 2011 when she was elected senator representing Lagos Central Senatorial District, Senator Oluremi Tinubu has raised the bar of legislative duties through quarterly meetings with members of her constituents. She has kept faith with regular town hall meetings rotated among the local governments in her constituency. The objective of the meeting is to explain the activities of the senate generally as they affect the Lagos Central, to inform the people on projects she was able to facilitate and interact with stakeholders to know their needs. Through this initiative, Mrs Tinubu has consistently upheld the principle of accountability, feedback and discourse.

The September 23, town hall meeting held at Banilux Event Centre, Sabo –Yaba, Lagos was the 19th of its type. Like those before it, Senator Tinubu assisted some less privileged through her economic empowerment scheme.

She announced a donation of N16, 250,000 to 650 widows who are residents of the district.

Mrs Tinubu said that the beneficiaries would receive N25,000 each under the  Widow’s Economic Empowerment Scheme (WESS). The theme of the meeting was “Redefining Democracy through Service”.

She said the amount would boost their businesses and assist thier push for self- reliance and provide for the families. The disbursement of the grant took place in 13 LG/LCDAs on September 27. Beneficiaries went to the council secretariat where they applied with a photo identity.

The senate chairperson on Environment said: “We have been able to execute some of our constituency initiatives”. One of such she said “was the disbursement of scholarships to all the 26 beneficiaries of the Post-Secondary Scholarship Scheme (PSSS) in our senatorial district took place on Wednesday August 201. The accounts of all beneficiaries were credited with N100,000 each for the next academic year.

“On 1st September 2016, our Women Leaders in the senatorial district were not left out. In order to boost their businesses, each of our women leaders was presented with grinding machines and 2.5 KVA generator; while 14 of our youth nominated by them, that are into fashion designing, were presented with sewing machines and generators for the Youth Empowerment and Skill Acquisitio scheme (YESAS) programme”.

On the economy, the senator said the current situation called for sober reflection. She noted that the issue at the front burner of political debate today was the diversification and restructuring of Nigeria.

According to her, what Nigeria needed is diversification. “For instance, if Nigeria can successfully diversify into agriculture, tourism, technology, manufacturing and sports, we will be on our way to economic recovery and agitation for geographical restructuring will fizzle out.

Tears as Senator Tinubu lifts 1,500 widows

Some widows were moved to tears yesterday as they received financial assistance from a senator representing Lagos Central Senatorial District, Mrs Oluremi Tinubu.

Across the 13 Local Government and Local Council Development Areas in the district, 50 widows were selected from each council for the gesture.

    Each of them received N25,000.

At Itire-Ikate LCDA, one of the beneficiaries, Alhaja Morenike Adekunle while responding on behalf of others bursted into tears.

Her tears evoked another tears from the host council’s Sole Administrator Sameeat Raji and few other beneficiaries.

Alhaja Adekunle, who lost her husband 14 years ago, told The Nation that she engage in petty trading to sponsor her three children.

“It has not been easy catering for the children alone. I have spent almost all I have on them for their school resumption. But with this money, I can re-stock my shop. I cannot thank Senator Tinubu enough,” she said.

Mrs Anthonia Akaenyi, who is into catering and selling of fairly used material, told The Nation that she lost her husband 19 years ago.

“To lose an husband is not an easy thing. I really appreciate the senator for remembering us and giving us hope. I could not re-marry because I love my children,” Mrs Akaenyi said.

Representative of Senator Tinubu, Alhaja Ashabi Bamgbola said the lawmaker is always preoccupied with how to better the society.

“Even if she is sleeping, she always thinks of what to do to assist fellow mankind especially the less-priviledged. We are not surprised with this gesture. She is a kind-hearted person and cheerful giver,” Alhaja Bamgbola said.

The wife of All Progressives Congress (APC) Lagos State Acting Secretary urged the beneficiaries to make good use of the fund.

The council boss said she felt pity for the widows.

“I was a bit emotional when the woman lamented the sufferings widows face. God will continue to bless Senator Tinubu for this wonderful gesture,” she said.

Mrs Raji urged the widows to wisely invest the money received.

In Ikoyi-Obalende LCDA, the council’s Sole Administrator, Felix Goke Ona-Olawale described Senator Tinubu’s gesture as clear demonstration of her dedications and commitments to women empowerment.

“I thank our dear senator for this gracious philanthropic deed, directed at impacting positively on the lives of our people.”

Senator Tinubu’s representative, Mrs Doyin Adewale, said: “the gesture was to assist the widows to start up small scale retail businesses in their respective neigbourhoods, with the overall aim of enhancing their standard of living.

“We try to understand what widows and the aged are passing through in this recession period, so the amount is to boost their existing businesses or to commence a trade on goods that is most needed in their neighbourhood.”

Osinbajo, Senator Tinubu rally support for made-in Nigeria goods

VICE President Yemi Osinbajo has said the government will provide the enabling environment to drive exports of locally manufactured goods through robust polices that allow the private sector to drive the economy.

He urged the Organised Private Sector (OPS) to unleash its creative ingenuity and enterprise to pull the economy out of recession.

Osinbajo spoke at the maiden edition of Made-in Nigeria Festival at the Eko Atlantic City, Lagos, yesterday.

He said measures taken by the administration improved the country’s ranking in the index of ‘ease of doing business’, which inched from 170 to 168 of 189 countries.

The Vice President decried corruption and lack of coordination occasioned by poor political will from past administrations.

He said the government would  increase production across all sectors of the economy by instituting transparency in governance, competitive infrastructure and encouraging access to finance to Small, Medium Enterprises (SMEs).

Osinbajo explained that government will work with the World Bank, governments and publishers of ‘Ease of Doing Business’ to intimate them of reforms, processes and other derivable taking place in the Federal Inland Service (FIRS), Customs, Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), and in states that have embarked on land reforms to liberalise access to land.

He said: “Our priority is to ensure that businesses are conducted according to best global practice. Other priority areas for this administration is transparency, digitalisation, tax and land reforms, port operation reforms, including single window portal and 24 hours service. We also want to engage in targeted engagement with the private sector by insisting on policy consistency where the private sector will not see government as adverse regulator or competitor”.

Earlier, Summit Chairman Senator Oluremi Tinubu hailed the summit as timely. She said the nation has potential waiting to be harnessed, and asked that government provides the enabling environment to drive commerce.

She said: “I want to see a situation where businesses will be exported from Nigeria unlike what we have where we only export raw materials. Government should ensure that locally manufactured goods meet quality standards. We have potential in the fashion and film industry, and l am glad that we are doing well in those subsectors.”

A panelist and partner KPMG, Mr. Joseph Tegbe, said: “We have not done certain things well as far as the ease of doing business is concerned.”

He called on the need to liberalise the cost of land acquisition and access to finance for businesses, adding that the country failed woefully on the 10 indicators listed by World Bank in ease of doing business.

Tegbe called for rigourous engagement of relevant setakeholders, including transparency and technology in land administration, to move up the ladder like countries such as Botswana, Uganda, Rwanda and Kenya.

The Managing Director/CEO, Konga, an e-commerce platform, Mr. Sola Adekoya, regretted that Nigeria has been left behind by other nations as far as e-commerce is concerned.

He condemned tax officials who he accused of being more interested in collecting spurious taxes than understanding his line of business. He also called for an enabling environment for businesses to thrive.

For the Acting Managing Director, Nigeria Investment promotion Council (NIPC), Mrs. Ladi Katagun, the challenges for the indigenous manufacturer to do business with others is that of perception of would-be–investors.

He canvassed the need for Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) to improve on its processes by enabling online permit and electronic payment as obtainable in other climes.

Acting British High Commissioner Ahmed Bashir spoke of the need for the government to market Nigeria and give confidence to investors as a result of the bad perception.

“Nigeria is not doing enough to sell the benefits here,” he added.

The senator representing the Lagos Central, Mrs Oluremi  Tinubu, has announced a donation of N16, 250,000 to 650 widows who are residents of the district.

Tinubu, who disclosed this at the 19th town hall meeting with members of her senatorial district yesterday, said that the beneficiaries would receive N25,000 each on Tuesday  under the  Widow’s Economic Empowerment Scheme (WESS), her constituency initiative. The meeting with the theme: “Redefining Democracy through Service” was held at Banilux Event Centre, Sabo, Yaba.

She said the amount is to boost the existing business or start business in order to be self-reliant and provide for the families. According to her, the disbursement of the grant will take place at our 13 LCDAs on Tuesday , September 27, at 9.00 am prompt. Beneficiaries should go to the council secretariats where they applied with identity cards.

Prior to yesterday’s meeting, the senate chairperson on Environment said: “We have been able to execute some of our constituency initiatives”.  One of such, she said “was the disbursement of scholarships to all the 26 beneficiaries of the Post-Secondary Scholarship Scheme (PSSS) in our senatorial district which took place on Wednesday, 31 August ,2016. Th e accounts of all beneficiaries were credited with N100,000 each for the next academic year.

She also reported that the 6th edition of under 12 and 15 boys and girls Muniru  Muse Cup sponsored by her office  took place on 21st August, 2016 at the Campos Mini Stadium, Ajele, Lagos.

Tinubu told her audience that “the theme for today’s meeting is apt, especially at a time when Nigeria is faced with imminent threat of recession. We as good citizens are called to a common cause of patriotism, sacrifice and understanding.

She used the platform to explain the difference between constituency projects and programmes initiated by legislators. According to her, it was true she facilitated some projects to her senatorial district  in the 7th Senate, saying if the projects were not completed, it was due to impropriety of the Goodluck Jonathan administration. “ I should not be held responsible, I did not collect money for the execution of constituency projects, I don’t even know the contractors”, she said.

On the economy, the senator said the current situation in Nigeria calls for sober reflection. She noted that the issue at the front burner of political debate in Nigeria today is diversification and restructuring of Nigeria.

According to her, what Nigeria needs is diversification. “For instance, if Nigeria can successfully diversify into agriculture, tourism, technology, manufacturing and sports, we will be on our way to economic recovery and agitation for geographical restructuring will fizzle out.

“Meaningful and well-funded diversification is a sure foundation for fiscal restructuring, as sharing anticipated resources will always bring deficit, anxiety, agitation, political suspicion and under development. Diversification plus fiscal restructuring will lead Nigeria to become a developed nation”, she said.

The Deputy Speaker, Lagos House of Assembly, Hon Wasiu Sani-Eshinlokun, commended Senator Tinubu for her generosity towards members of her senatorial district and quality representation.

Senator Tinubu makes case for counsellors

Representative of the Lagos Central Senatorial District, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has pushed for strict adherence to the implementation of the national policy on education.

The policy recommends that “counsellors shall be attached to all post primary institutions in Nigeria”.

She spoke while delivering the keynote address on the theme: ‘Counselling, women’s health, education/empowerment and sustainable development,’ during the opening of the 41st international conference of the Counselling Association of Nigeria (CASSON), at the Multi-purpose Hall, University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, yesterday.

Senator Tinubu said lack of counsellors was the cause for increased criminality, misdirection and other factors that have left Nigeria in its underdeveloped state.

She said: “In order to address problems ranging from cultism, academic failure, examination malpractices, vocational choices, sexuality issues to health challenges in schools, the role of the guidance and counselling services is indeed essential… Government should enforce the implementation of the aspect of the national policy on education, which says that “counsellors shall be attached to all post primary institutions in Nigeria.” Highly populated schools should have enough counsellors to meet challenges of the youth.”

Sen Tinubu also proposed that professional counsellors should be attached to all women development centres, primary health centres and local government councils to foster good governance.

She said: “The Bill recognising the Counselling Association of Nigeria as a professional body should be passed and approved without any delay.”

Also speaking, wife of Ogun State governor, and a grand patron of CASSON, Mrs Olufunso Amosun, urged women not to settle for less, as they can achieve as much as the men.

She noted that: “Women face numerous challenges, such as poverty, illiteracy, violence against women, human rights issues, marginalisation, political apathy, facing consequences from traditional practices, such as female genital mutilation, early marriages, widowhood, sexual violence, emotional and psychological violence, physical violence, to mention a few. These impact negatively on women’s development.”

CASSON’s National President Prof Alfred Adegoke stressed the need for women to be strengthened emotionally and psychologically to achieve sustainable development.

“We thought it important for us to bring women issues to the fore once more, because we found out that women are marginalised all over the world.,” he said.

Meanwhile, the lead papers  were presented by Director, Fredrickson Centre for School Counselling Outcome Research, University of Massachusettes, United States of America, Prof John Carey; and Emeritus Professor of Education, University of Ibadan, Pai Obanya.

Senator Tinubu, Mrs Amosun, Prof Obanya, among others, were presented awards for their contributions to humanity and the association.

  • Adebule, Senator Tinubu lament women’s discrimination

Advocates of women emancipation got at the weekend allies in Lagos State Deputy Governor  Dr Idiat Adebule and the Senator representing Lagos Central Mrs Oluremi Tinubu. The duo called for collaboration among African countries for the emancipation of women.

They made the call at the South Africa’s National Women’s Day Celebration organised by the South African High Commission in collaboration with the Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA).

Mrs Adebule said there was the need to achieve effective synergy to accomplish the Sustainable Development Goal Five which promote gender equality and empowerment of women in Africa.

Women, she said, must be treated with honour and dignity.

Her words: “Women are still being discriminated against in many countries. They are still not well represented in the political and most decision-making processes. Domestic violence is on the increase, the girl-child is exposed to all forms of abuse such as rape, prostitution, child labour and early marriages.

“We still need a collective will to address and remove all barriers to the full emancipation of women in our society.” she said.

Mrs Adebule said the state government would continue to accord women their right of place and encourage equal access to opportunities in areas of endeavour.

Senator Tinubu said there was the need for African women to support, uplift, encourage and celebrate one another.

She urged women to work together to achieve a collective empowerment in the face of a male-dominated society.

She said: “We need increased participation that represents our population in politics to enable us to feel more relevant as productive members of the society.

“If we want to make the 21 century the woman’s century, we cannot wait to be called ‘leaders’, we must naturally embrace that role.”

South African Consulate-General Mr Darkey Africa, stressed the importance of women in any given society being nurturers of great nations.

The envoy said women contributed and fought for the emancipation of women in South Africa and created an enabling society for generations unborn.

He urged Nigerian women to stand up, support and encourage one another to promote more participation in the socio-economic and political spheres.

The Women Affairs Commissioner, Mrs Lola Akande, identified  women and children as the most vulnerable in any depressed economy.

She urged women to become more socio-economically prominent.

  • ‘Melaye’s attack on Senator Tinubu indecent’

‘Melaye’s attack on Senator Tinubu indecent’

An All Progressives Congress (APC) female chairmanship aspirant in Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos State, Adeshola Openibo, has vehemently condemned Senator Dino Melaye for attacking the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Women Affairs, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.                Openibo, an engineer, expressed shock that Melaye reduced the Senate to a platform of abuse, physical and verbal assault as well as sexual harassment of a distinguished woman, a respected wife, a loving mother and a distinguished colleague.

She said the Kogi senator’s action was clearly an unprovoked attack.

Openibo said she expected Melaye to protect and give Senator Tinubu due respect, instead of his condemnable action.

“Senator Melaye’s verbal attack and threat on Senator Tinubu were uncouth, indecent, demeaning, humiliating, sexist and criminal,” she said.

The aspirant noted that though the direct victim of the “primitive attack” was Senator Tinubu, but she considered Melaye’s action a collective attack on the womenfolk.

The engineer urged Melaye to publicly withdraw his tantrums and apologise not only to Senator Tinubu but also to the women folk.

Besides, Openibi said strict actions should be enforced against a future repeat of such attack at all legislative levels in the country.

It’s high time we realised that the Upper and the Lower legislative chambers are meant for distinguished men and women of value, she said.

•Kogi lawmaker gets seven days to apologise

Aggrieved women yesterday turned out in large numbers in Ondo and Lagos states in protest against Senator Dino Melaye for “threatening Senator Oluremi Tinubu” at the Senate last Tuesday.

This came on a day the House of Assembly, at plenary, urged the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to discipline any erring member who has brought insult and dishonour to its fold.

In Abuja, the Coalition for Women Advancement in Africa (CoWAA) issued a directive to the Kogi West senator to tender an unreserved apology to Senator Tinubu.

At the Akure protest, women, on the aegis of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Women for Women (WFW) marched on the streets of the state capital, chanting solidarity songs in support of Senator Tinubu.

The women carried placards with anti-Melaye inscriptions.

They were from the 18 local governments.

The protesters gave the lawmaker seven days to apologise to women for insulting Senator Tinubu, who chairs the Senate Committee on Women Affairs.

Addressing reporters after the rally, the Ondo State Coordinator of WFW, Mrs. Fola Olaseinde-Vincente, a former lawmaker representing Ose, described the attack on Mrs.  Tinubu as “too many” on women.

The lawyer said: “Never are we going to accept this kind of assault on women to go with impunity. We are calling on women across the world to rise up against assault on fellow women because an attack on any woman is an attack on all women.”

The APC state chairman, Isaac Kekemeke, hailed the women for their solidarity with Senator Tinubu, urging them to work together in mobilising the citizenry against discrimination against them.

In Lagos, scores of women under the aegis of the Concerned Group yesterday stormed the Office of Lagos State Governor Akinwumi Ambode to protest the verbal attack on the Senator representing Lagos Central.

The women, drawn from the three senatorial districts, paraded with placards, saying: “Melaye, Senate is not your father’s house”; “Dino, leave Tinubu alone”; “We say no to violence against women”; “Womenfolk, stand up against Dino” and others.

The leader of the group, Mrs. Anike Adekanye, delivered a protest letter to Governor Akinwunmi Ambode at the Lagos House in Alausa for transmission to President Muhammadu Buhari.

She said Melaye’s actions brought shame to himself, Kogi West, the Senate and the country.

According to her, Melaye exhibited convincingly that he lacked the “poise, panache, fitness and minimum character to occupy a seat among sane, revered and distinguished men and women in the Senate”.

The group urged Buhari to direct relevant security agencies to institute criminal action against Melaye should he fail to apologise within an acceptable time-frame, to serve as a deterrent to others as well as send a signal to young people, who might have erroneously viewed Melaye’s “disgraceful action” as an ideal conduct in a sane and civilised society.

Receiving the protesters on behalf of Ambode, Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation Lola Akande assured the women the letter would be delivered to the President and that action would be taken.

The House of Assembly, as part of its resolutions yesterday while reacting to a protest to the Assembly by the Concerned Group, resolved to write and attach its letter to the petition submitted by the protesters.

It promised to send same letters to the Senate and the APC for investigation and disciplinary action.

Deputy Speaker, Eshilokun Sanni, who received the protesters, raised the issue at plenary under matters of urgent public importance, calling on his colleagues to take action to call Melaye to order.

Hailing the protesters for the way and manner they conducted themselves, Speaker Mudashiru Obasa said the protest showed that Lagosians were “sophisticated, advanced and concerned about the mandate given to their representatives”.

“The protesters are sending a message in strong terms through that protest that we have not abandoned our representative, that we are behind her and that Melaye must not molest or assault her and to warn him to desist from such action,” Obasa said.

The Coalition for Women Advancement in Africa (CoWAA), in Abuja, called on the senator representing Kogi West to tender an unreserved apology to Senator Tinubu.

It said Melaye and his like posed great threats to women advancement in Africa.

In a statement, the coalition said Melaye “is symptomatic of an emerging undesirable breed of men that objectify and belittle women contrary to the global trend of promoting equality”.

It demanded that Melaye should apologise for his offence.

The statement, signed by the CoWAA’s Executive Vice President, Jummai Samuel, berated a columnist, Sonala Olumhense, for his alleged assault on the wives of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen. Tukur Buratai.

Olumhense, allegedly in his article, ridiculed the wives of Buratai, by suggesting that they were not independent enough to own property or contribute to their family’s investment.

CoWAA demanded apologies from both men with the explanation that it was necessary to discourage other menfolk from following in their footsteps.

    •Rep slams Kogi senator

The All Progressives Congress (APC) women and other groups in Ondo State will today protest against Senator Dino Melaye in Akure, the state capital,  for “threatened Senator Oluremi Tinubu”at the Senate last Tuesday.

Their coordinator and former member of the state House of Assembly, Mrs. Fola Olasehinde-Vincente, described the attack on Tinubu as “too harsh on the Nigerian women”.

In a statement, the former lawmaker representing Ose Constituency said Melaye had records of assaults and physical attacks on women, especially with his first wife, Tokunbo.

The statement noted that the action of the Kogi senator was “indecent and shameful”.

“Melaye could flex his muscles if he so will, but not by being a bully in the Senate as evident in the way he sprang up from his seat and charged towards Senator Tinubu and threatened to physically assault her,” Olasehinde-Vincente said.

The statement said the attack was the height of legislative rascality ever perpetrated by any lawmaker in the country.

It added the lawmaker has misrepresented the people of Kogi West, who elected him.

The group called on every woman across the globe to rise up against any assault on fellow women, saying “an attack on one woman is an attack on all women”.

She urged women to join the procession slated for today in Akure.

A member of House of Representatives, representing Ibadan North Federal Constituency, Abiodun Awoleye-Dada, said yesterday that the attack on  Senator Tinubu by Melaye showed that he has no respect for women.

The two-term member of House of Representatives described Melaye’s statement as unfortunate and uncultured.

The lawmaker, who spoke in Ibadan, criticised the way the senator conducts himself   in the Senate.

According to him, the attack on Senator Tinubu was a show of shame and disgrace to men who perform their duties in their homes.
