Senegal‘s Cisse wary of ‘distressed’ Cote d’Ivoire

Cote d’Ivoire lost their last two Group A games, including being hammered 4-0 by Equatorial Guinea.

The hosts had to sneak into the Round of 16 as one of the third-best-placed teams after also losing 1-0 to Nigeria in their last Group A match.

With Senegal winning all of their group games and looking strong on paper,   but coach Aliou Cisse does not want to view his side as superior to Cote d’Ivoire .

“Our team is going through a good period after three matches, where we achieved good results in the group stage, and I am satisfied with it,” Cisse said as per beIN Sports. “We will play a very difficult match. If we win, we will continue the adventure, and if we lose, we will return home.

“We qualified with nine points and the opponent with three points, this does not matter. Now a new competition has begun. Cote d’Ivoire  remains a major team in Africa, they have good players,” he added.

“The defeat in their last two matches remain just an accident, they will show another performance in front of their fans.”

With Senegal having a 100 percent record in this AFCON, that is a statement of intent in their quest to defend the AFCON title.

Cisse’s remarks on Cote d’Ivoire might sound diplomatic but Senegal are in ruthless mode and have the capacity to spoil the hosts’ AFCON party.

The Elephants could, however, take their defeats as big lessons that will help them pick themselves up and upset the holders.

The two West African giants are now braced up to clash  today  in a match that could produce 2023 AFCON winners.

The winner between Cote d’Ivoire  and Senegal will meet the team that emerges triumphant in another Round of 16 clash between Cape Verde and Mauritania.

Eyes on Senegal, Nigeria as AFCON knockouts begin

The Africa Cup of Nations moves onto the knockout phase after a remarkable group stage packed with goals, drama, shock results and a huge scare for hosts Cote d’Ivoire , but holders Senegal remain the team to beat.

The tournament is on course to be far more prolific than either of the two previous editions to feature 24 teams, after 89 goals were scored in the group stage.

That average of 2.5 per game marks a huge increase after 68 were scored in the first round in Cameroon two years ago, and in the first expanded AFCON in Egypt in 2019.

Senegal got to the final of both of those tournaments, and won the title for the first time in 2022.

They have so far lived up to their billing in Cote d’Ivoire  with Aliou Cisse’s side alone in finishing the group stage with a 100 percent record.

Led by Sadio Mane, they swept aside Gambia, Cameroon and Guinea and can be confident going into a last-16 tie with the Ivorians in Yamoussoukro.

Meanwhile Morocco, the continent’s top-ranked team, eased through with seven points and the sense is there must be more to come from a side led by Paris Saint-Germain full-back Achraf Hakimi, as they face South Africa next.

Three-time champions Nigeria have looked remarkably sound defensively, with coach Jose Peseiro openly admitting keeping clean sheets is his number one priority.

That is despite the Super Eagles’ impressive array of attacking options around superstar Victor Osimhen, the African player of the year.

“My responsibility is to choose the best way to win this competition,” Peseiro said when asked about his decision to put the focus on the defence.

Nigeria boast the continent’s best player in striker Victor Osimhen, but their success so far has been built around a solid defence

“I chose another strategy, and the players believe in it – don’t concede goals because we will score at least one.”

He astutely pointed out that Senegal only scored one goal in their first three games at the last AFCON before going on to lift the trophy.

Nigeria’s meeting with Cameroon is a mouthwatering repeat of the 2000 final, when Rigobert Song’s Indomitable Lions won on penalties in Lagos – he is now the Cameroon coach.

Egypt have been the opposite of Nigeria – a team that conceded only six goals across the last three tournaments combined have let in six in three group games here.

“Obviously this is something that worries me,” said their coach Rui Vitoria, although the fitness of talisman Mohamed Salah is their biggest concern before facing the Democratic Republic of Congo.

He has returned to his club Liverpool for treatment on a hamstring injury amid suggestions he might not be fit to come back for Egypt unless they reach the February 11 final.

Not all the heavyweights survived the group stage, with Tunisia and Algeria the biggest names to be eliminated.

In contrast, Namibia and Mauritania have made it beyond the group stage for the first time, while Cape Verde and Angola’s impressive showings so far give them reason to believe they can win knockout ties for the first time.

“In our first team meeting I said to the players the objective was to get to the semi-finals,” declared Cape Verde coach Pedro ‘Bubista’ Brito.

Few in Cote d’Ivoire could have contemplated that their team, one of the traditional powerhouses of the African game and two-time continental champions, could be eliminated in the group stage.

Can hosts Cote d’Ivoire  pick themselves up for the last 16 after their shock 4-0 loss to Equatorial Guinea?

Yet they came within a whisker of becoming the first AFCON hosts to go out in the first round since Gabon in 2017, and just the second since Tunisia in 1994.

That was after a shocking 4-0 defeat by Equatorial Guinea, their heaviest ever home loss.

However, they squeezed through as the last of the four best third-placed sides and now face Senegal.

The Elephants became the second team to sack their coach during the tournament, following in the footsteps of Tanzania by dismissing Jean-Louis Gasset.

Emerse Fae is their new interim boss and he takes over a team that is not as strong as past Ivorian sides but still boasts quality, particularly in midfield.

It remains to be seen if they can compete with the defending champions, however.

Eyes on Yamoussoukro as Guinea size up Senegal

The Stade Charles Konan Banny de Yamoussoukro will reverberate with anticipation as Guinea lock horns with Senegal in a decisive Group C ‘s Africa Cup of Nations clash to be aired on StarTimes Sports Premium Channel 252 and 246 as well as StarTimes-On app.

The National Elephants need just one point to secure a top-two finish in the group and guarantee their qualification for the knockout stage, while the Teranga Lions, who have already sealed their place in the last 16, must avoid defeat to finish top of the group.

Senegal secured their place in the knockout stages of AFCON 2023 after a thrilling 3-1 victory over Cameroon in their second group game.

Ismaila Sarr’s deflected shot and Habib Diallo’s sweeping finish put the reigning African champions in a comfortable position. However, Jean-Charles Castelletto’s goal for the Indomitable Lions with seven minutes of injury time remaining put the Teranga Lions under immense pressure.

Just when it seemed Cameroon might snatch a point, Sadio Mane stepped up in the 95th minute to score his first goal of the tournament and seal the victory for Aliou Cisse’s men, taking them to six points from two matches and securing their qualification for the round of 16.

With top spot in the group up for grabs, Senegal will look to maintain their unbeaten run in their final group game on Tuesday. Avoiding defeat would guarantee them first place and potentially a more favourable tie in the next round.

The Teranga Lions are now unbeaten in their last six matches, including friendlies, winning the last three, while they have also not lost in their last nine AFCON matches, dating back to the 2022 tournament.

Cisse, who suffered a gastric infection and spent the night under observation in hospital after the Cameroon game, will be hoping his side can deliver another strong performance to extend their unbeaten run.

For Guinea, however, complacency is not an option heading into Tuesday’s crucial battle for qualification.

Their 1-0 victory over Gambia, secured by Aguibou Camara’s 69th -minute strike, has put Kaba Diawara’s side in the driving seat. With four points from two games, Guinea control their own destiny going into the final group match.

A single point will be enough for the Guineans to seal a top-two spot and book their place in the knockout stages. However, defeat would leave them reliant on Cameroon dropping points against Gambia or a superior goal difference should both teams finish on four points.

It is worth noting that Guinea and Senegal shared the same group at the previous AFCON, playing out a goalless draw. The National Elephants will undoubtedly hope to replicate that result against the reigning champions today.

Senegal vs. Gambia: Champions begin title defence against underdogs

Senegal will begin their defence of the Africa Cup of Nations title when they square off against Gambia at Stade Charles Konan Banny de Yamoussoukro  this evening.

Group C looks like it could be one of the most competitive in the competition, featuring five-time champions Cameroon and the up-and-coming Guinea, who face off at this venue directly after the conclusion of this match live on StarTimes Sports Premium Channel 252 and 246 as well as StarTimes-On app.

Since Egypt claimed their third consecutive title back in 2010, no team has managed to defend the AFCON trophy, but Senegal come into this year’s competition as the favourites to do just that, according to several bookmakers.

In the history of the competition, only three nations have managed to successfully retain the AFCON title: Egypt (1957, 1959; 2006, 2008, 2010), Ghana (1963, 1965) and Cameroon (2000, 2002).

Despite a slow start in the 2021 continental competition, which included scoring just one goal and playing out two goalless draws in the group stages, Senegal shed the tag of underachievers by winning the tournament at the expense of Egypt.

Since then, The Lions of Teranga have gone from strength to strength, boasting a star-studded team that features the likes of Nicolas Jackson, Serge Aurier, Kalidou Koulibaly and the two-time African Player of the Year, Sadio Mane.

Despite significant chopping and changing in recent months, Aliou Cisse’s side come into the tournament in excellent shape, winning six of their last 10 matches in all competitions and losing only once in that time.

These two last met in the African Nations Cup back in 2015, which Senegal won 1-0, and with that result, they maintained their unbeaten record against Gambia that dates back to 2008.

Gambia will get their tournament started as the biggest outsiders and the lowest-ranked team in Group C, currently in 29th   place among 53 African footballing nations according to FIFA World Rankings.

  • Eagles ambush Teranga Lions

Senegal’s Teranga Lions is Africa’s number one –ranked team, but the Super Eagles are determined to give a good account of themselves when both teams square up in Ismailia on Sunday night.

Feelers from the camp indicate only a very positive ambience with players and officials thinking of how to bring honour and glory to the nation, when the whistle goes for kick off at the 32nd Africa Cup of Nations finals in seven days.

The last time both Nigeria and Senegal clashed at senior level, was on 23rd March 2017, at The Hive (home of Barnet FC and London Bees) in London. Kelechi Iheanacho equalized from the spot after Moussa Sow had put Senegal ahead – both goals coming in the second half.

Three-time African champions Nigeria are on an eight-match unbeaten run since the elimination from the 2018 FIFA World Cup finals in Russia.

Sunday’s game has been scheduled to start at 7 pm Egypt time (6 pm Nigeria time) and both Federations have agreed that the match be played behind closed doors in order to enable both coaching crews to tinker with tactics and strategy during the encounter.

The Nigerian delegation will depart from Ismailia on Monday morning, for Alexandria – venue of their Group B attrition against Burundi, Guinea and Madagascar.

  • F/Eagles settle down in Lodz ahead win or exit clash against Senegal

After managing to qualify for the knock out stage of the ongoing FIFA U-20 World cup in Poland, Flying Eagles have settled down in Lodz ahead of the Monday decider against African brothers Senegal.

The Paul Aigbogun led side posted a disappointing outing against USA in the second group match and managed to hold group leaders Ukraine to a 1-1 draw on Thursday but moved on as one of the best third placed teams, thanks to an impressive run in the opener when the team won 4-0 against Qatar.

The Nigeria football Federation Saturday informed that the team vacated their Qubus Hotel Bielsko-Biala for a three hour ride to Lodz, where they have already settled down with a feel of the stadium and first training in Lodz or lined up as activities for the day.

Nigerians who have reacted to the performance of the team so far in Poland, say the technical crew and the boys should see their qualification to the round of 16 as a near miracle which must be consolidated upon.

They reminded the team not to expect a tea party against junior Taranga Lions who are ready to fight to the finish.

The Senegalese have had an impressive run in Poland so far winning two of their group matches and pulling a draw in the last one and ending up as Group A leaders.

The team will no doubt be hoping to continue their fine ride an indication that they will take the fight right to the door steps of Coach Aigbogun and his boys on Monday.

  • Senegal first to qualify for Poland 2019 beat Ghana 2-0

Young Teranga Lions of Senegal have become the first country at the ongoing African under 20 Nations cup in Niger to qualify for the World cup in Poland.

Les Lions de la Teranga on Wednesday defeated the Black Starlets of Ghana 2-0 in their second match of the tournament.

The young lions had in their opening match beaten Mali by the same margin and have now garnered six points in two matches. They lead Group B with 6 points with Ghana and Mali in the second and 3rd position respectively.

With one match left for all the competitors on Friday and Saturday respectively, Senegal already have a place in the semifinals and will finish with maximum nine points if they compound the woes of Burkina Faso who have no points in two matches.  Senegal takes on Burkina Faso on Saturday while Ghana and Mali battle to the finish for the second semifinalists of the group.

Flying Eagles who missed picking one of the tickets after a goalless draw with Amajita of South Africa will have to avoid a slip against hosts Niger on Friday.

In the second match of Friday, South Africa will equally fight to the finish against Burundi.  Both teams are on two points with Nigeria leading the group with four points. A draw could grant Nigeria the needed qualification but Coach of the side Paul Aigbogun has reported told his team to forget about seeking a draw but go for outright win against Niger. This would be the third time Senegal will be gracing the FIFA under 20 World cup.

In 2007 & 2009 they got to the 1st Qualifying round, but got knocked out by Ghana (2007) & Nigeria (2009).

In 2011 they got to the 2nd round, but got knocked out by Egypt.

In the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup they reached the semi-finals of the finals tournament, losing 5-0 to Brazil and then losing 3-1 in the third-place match against Mali.

  • President Sall presents new book to public

President of the Republic of Senegal, Macky Sall today presented his new book “Le Sénégal au Cœur” to the press at The Terrou Bi hotel in Dakar. The book presentation also coincides with his 57th birthday.

According to a statement, the book is based on his character defining experiences from childhood to being in the many positions of leadership that led to him being the fourth and youngest President of Senegal. It touches on his long march made possible, by holding on to his faith and principles of discipline and firmness, which led him to the helm of his treasured Senegal.

An opportunity he does not take lightly, as he pushes through his emergence blueprint that is fast seeing Senegal as a developed nation on the cusp of a transformational breakthrough. It is apt that as he concludes his first term in office in February 2019 and prepares for the battle of his second term, Senegalese gets to know more intimately the man they often reproach for being too rigid and nicknamed “Niangal” in Wolof. A nickname he somehow accepts as he himself accepts that he can come across as such from the outside. An image that is not helped by Sall being an expert in engineering and geology with a very pragmatic outlook on life.

“This book places Sall’s heart on the table for all to see the complexities that make up the man, Macky Sall. It is a story that connects the president’s past with the youth of today’s present. It is a story of sacrifice, hardship, personal growth and powerful dreams for the future, with many experiences and aspirations that most children of the developing world can relate to. In the book, we learn about the harsh realities faced by Sall, like many other rural children such as, walking many miles to get to school. An experience that led to his decisions to map out a greater life for himself and a trajectory of a bright destiny. He discusses his very sour relationship with his predecessor and then mentor, Abdoulaye Wade and all the political characters such as, the colorful character that is, Idrissa Seck who Sall have had clashes with,” the statement said.

From a child of Fouta of modest beginnings, to a man of the world, who refused to let “The nauseating remarks of [Abdoulaye] Wade” calling him a descendant of slaves and coming from a family of cannibals not define him; after Wade, the former President who mentored and guided Sall became furious at Sall for daring to run for the presidency. Sall refused to bow his head low in his pursuit of a brighter tomorrow.

Wade’s unformed statements were the last act of revenge meant to push in the blowing dagger into Sall’s heart for his supposed betrayal. Sall touches deeply about his family ancestry, stating that it is rooted in Toro and Ngénar. “They know that I come from a line of famous and prestigious warrior nobles,” he says.

Sall delivers a tone of perseverance despite adversity and failure in ‘Le Senegal au Coeur.’ His journey is akin to the theme of a hero’s journey “a broad category of tales that involve a hero who goes on an adventure, and in a decisive crisis wins a victory, and then comes home changed or transformed.” It teaches the future generation the importance of failure as something to learn from is important on the journey to success. But above all, it teaches us all the importance of a dignified life.

Sall dedicates his book to his parents, children and his adored wife, Marème Faye Sall. He pays many tributes to his beloved Marème and touches on her endless sacrifices made, in order for him to pursue his career. It speaks to the importance of choosing a partner that supports ones during the good and bad times.
