SERVICOM decried lack of operational vehicles in NAFDAC

SERVICOM National Coordinator, Mrs Nnenna Akajemeli has decried the lack of operational vehicles for field works at the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

This is as SERVICOM also advised NAFDAC to do away with consultants, so as to guide against sharp practices.

Akajemeli spoke on Friday while presenting the report of SERVICOM assessment of NAFDAC to it’s  new Acting Director General, Mr Ademola Mogbojuri.

NAFDAC in the assessment was scored average, with two stars after carrying out an assessment on the eight offices across the country.

SERVICOM used a set of business-relevant key performance Indicators that provide a standardized method for measuring and comparing performance against service standards defined by Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs). It measures the key influences on service delivery and customer satisfaction as well as the need for feedback and future development.

Identifying some of the weaknesses of NAFDAC, Akajemeli said at the time of evaluation, the were inconsistencies on whether or not the agency deploys the use of consultants to facilitate the procurement of the agency’s service to customers.

Also, the dearth of operational vehicles for the agency’s field activities and this had hampered the efficacy of investigation activities, like enforcement directorate.

SERVICOM also noticed that NAFDAC was not in regular consultations with customers amongst other.

Akajemeli, therefore, urged NAFDAC to ensure continuous improvement on quality of service, while at the same time recommended requisite training for all categories of staff.

On consultancy, she advised that the management need to stop the individuals parading themselves as consultants of the agency so that members of the public are not taken undue advantage of.

SERVICOM, she said is in collaboration with NAFDAC as critical partners in actualizing the proposed service improvement plan.

In his reaction, the Acting Director-General, Magbojuri said the weaknesses identified would be working upon as the agency aims at becoming a leading government agency in service delivery.

He also urged staff of the agency to rise up to the challenge of turning around the fortune of the agency to an agency of excellence.

The Federal Government on Tuesday in Abuja decried the negative attitude of Nigerians toward citizens living with disabilities, alleging that  they are being neglected.

Dr Samuel Ankeli, Senior Special Adviser to the President on Disability Matters, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the sideline of the ongoing SERVICOM Dialogue.

The 1st National Policy Dialogue on Strategies for Improving Service Delivery in Government MDAs was organised by SERVICOM and tagged Efficient and Effective Service Delivery: Imperative for Driving the Change Agenda.

Ankeli defined disability as an impairment, saying that over 25 million Nigerians are living with various disabilities and are being denied their rights.

“Over 25 million Nigerians are living with disabilities and if as a government you neglect 25 million of your citizens you have broken your constitutional mandate.

“The attitude of Nigerians toward people living with disabilities is very wrong and this span through all works of life from government to ordinary citizens.

“We are not included in employment plan and all other forms of basic amenities in the country and we are not employed in most organisation then there is a gap that must be filled,” he said.

He added that public offices are not accessible for people on wheel chairs, saying that the public transport system is also not user friendly for them.

Ankeli also complained that the housing estates being built by government and private developers do not cater for the need of the people living with disabilities.

He stated that the country’s civil service system needs to be professional and technical on their service delivery.

The presidential aide noted that some of the officers holding high positions are not qualified for the positions they occupy, describing the situation as “square pegs in round holes.”

Ankeli called on SERVICOM to take their campaigns to Churches and Mosques to adequately drive home the message of effective and efficient service delivery in public service.

  • FG to revamp SERVICOM for efficient service delivery – SGF

FG to revamp SERVICOM for efficient service delivery – SGF

The Federal Government on Monday expressed its commitment to revamp the Service Compact (SERVICOM) agency to ensure effective and efficient public service delivery in the country.

Mr Babachir Lawal, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) made this known in Abuja at the National Policy Dialogue on Strategies for Improving Service Delivery in Government Ministries, Departments, Agencies and Commissions.

The event which was tagged: “Efficient and Effective Service Delivery: Imperative for Driving the Change Agenda’’ was organised by SERVICOM to brainstorm on ways to boost citizen focused service delivery.

SERVICOM is an acronym derived from the words SERVICE COMPACT, an initiative of the Federal Government developed out of the consensus emerging from a Special Presidential Retreat on Service Delivery.

It is an agreement between the Federal Government and the citizens to guide and sustain the drive for improved service delivery by ensuring that MDAs are more citizen-focused in their operations.

According to Lawal, the revamping of the agency will mark a significant step in government’s effort to enhance and sustain the culture of effective service delivery in all government establishments, to serve the people better.

He said that the dialogue was timely as the existence of SERVICOM initiative would be appraised and frameworks developed to improve public service delivery.

“The importance of our gathering today is to reflect on Nigeria’s public service delivery journey in the past 12 years of the SERVICOM Initiative, appraise the gains and setbacks.

“Also to develop a framework that will translate governments’ efforts into to tangible improvements in public service delivery.

“Therefore, I urge you to kindly embrace Government’s reaffirmation of the ideals of SERVICOM, by developing a holistic framework to facilitate the anticipated improvements in performance by MDAs as a precursor for better service delivery,’’he said.

He noted that improving service delivery was part of the change agenda of the present administration, adding that it would enhance government’s connection with the citizenry.

The SGF said there was need to sensitise citizens on their rights to demand high quality services; and articulate new pathways for gaining more efficiency in service delivery.

He noted that this could be done through a review of Global best practices in governance and periodic evaluation of the quality of services delivered to citizens.

Earlier, Mrs Nnenna Akajemeli, Acting National Coordinator, SERVICOM said that a citizen centred approach in service delivery would be adopted in reviving the agency.

She added that the redesigning the internal processes of government agencies was imperative to achieving the set goal.

Akajemeli also said that to ensure the change agenda of the present administration public servants should see themselves as servants of the citizenry and not masters.

“Public Service in this democratic dispensation comes with legitimate expectations of the populace and the meeting of such needs and expectations is the fundamental objective of this administration.

“ In order to achieve this there must be re-orientation of government institutions to optimise access to their sectors by all citizens.

“There must be shift in public service culture orientating public servants to view themselves as servants of citizenry rather than masters as government recognises the need to deliver high quality efficient service delivery at reduced cost’’, she said.

Mrs Winifred Oyo-Ita, Head Civil Service of the Federation, said that before the establishment of SERVICOM Nigerians were surcharged in the service delivered to them.

She added that Nigerians deserve better service delivery, saying that the present administration is committed to revamping of SERVICOM.

She noted that the dialogue was timely, when focus was on enhancing effective and efficient service delivery to all Nigerians which was critical to the change agenda.
