Feminism fuels gender conflicts, says Seun Kuti

Musician and activist Seun Kuti has voiced his concerns about the practice of feminism in Nigeria, arguing that it is often used to create divisions and escalate gender conflicts rather than drive meaningful social change.

Speaking during an Instagram livestream, Kuti referenced the ongoing lawsuit between Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan and Mrs. Unoma Akpabio, wife of Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

The lawsuit stems from allegations of sexual harassment made by Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan against the Senate President.

Kuti contended that if feminism were truly effective in Nigeria, women would have rallied in support of Akpoti-Uduaghan rather than staying silent on the issue.

He said: “When we talk about feminism in Nigeria, I feel like it’s just a means to divide us. Anything that can divide us, we just like to embrace it. We like gender wars in this country, tribal wars and other things that can divide us. Feminism is just an excuse for people to engage in gender wars. If Nigerian women were real feminists, they would come behind this senator woman and call out our senate president”.

Seun emphasised that Fela remained true to himself and didn’t change to impress the white women.

“My father had white women in his house. When I grew up, there were like two white women at least living with us. He always had white ones with the black ones.

“Instead of Fela to wear a suit and tie so that the white women would see him as fine, the women were the ones who started wearing shrine regalia and African hairstyles.

“Fela never changed because of them but they changed because of him because Fela already knew who he was and his love for Africa,” Seun Kuti shared.

Seun Kuti slams cryptocurrency market after sister allegedly loses N50m

Musician Seun Kuti has strongly condemned the cryptocurrency market, calling it a “scam” that preys on vulnerable individuals.

In a viral video, Kuti shared a personal account of his sister’s significant financial loss in a cryptocurrency investment scheme, revealing that she lost over N50 million.

Kuti criticised cryptocurrency promoters, labeling them “criminals” who exploit the poor and facilitate wealth transfer to the rich.

He described the cryptocurrency system as a “scheme” designed to benefit the wealthy at the expense of the less fortunate.

“Crypto is a lie. You people are criminals trying to steal from poor people. It’s nothing but a wealth transfer from the poorest to the richest, just like gambling.

“You all promote it, you push it, but it’s all about wealth transfer. You’re all part of this plan to shift wealth from the poor to the pockets of the rich.

“There’s no freedom in crypto. More Africans have lost money to this than those who have made a profit from it.

“You know how much my sister has lost to crypto. I’ve been warning her, but she didn’t listen. I can’t even tell you how much I’ve lost—over ₦50 million. My sister, my own blood sister—this is how many Nigerians have lost millions,” he said.

Seun Kuti condemns child battery, says it’s not part of African culture

Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has condemned child battery, stating that it is not part of African culture.

In a video posted on his Instagram page, Kuti shared his personal experience of how his father, the late Fela Kuti, protected him from corporal punishment in school.

Kuti recalled how his father would write letters to his school administrators, warning them not to physically discipline him.

He emphasized that African culture does not condone child battery and noted that the belief that African parents beat their children is a misconception.

He encouraged parents to adopt alternative disciplinary methods.

“As a product of the Nigerian educational system, I almost experienced being flogged at school.

“That’s the one thing I appreciate my father for. So when I was going to school, my father always gave me a letter on the first day of term.

“In primary school, the letter was addressed to my headmistress. In secondary school, it was to my principal.

“The letter always read, “Nobody should touch my child. If he has done anything wrong, report him at home. I will punish him myself.’

“One teacher tried it one day. I didn’t even like that teacher. The speed with which I reported him at home resulted in him facing a lot of trouble after that day.

“It’s ‘un-African’ to beat your child. I know that some of us have been indoctrinated to believe that African parents beat their children; no. African people were the ones being beaten; it’s not the other way around.”

“Don’t involve me in Burna Boy & Speed Darlington’s case; because I collected a diamond from him doesn’t mean I’m his close adviser. Diddy was even the one who made Speed Darlington popular.

“He reposted ‘Bangdadang’ which made the song popular. I have done a lot of songs, and Diddy never posted any of them, but he reposted Speed Darlington’s song,” he said.
