    Tinubu my political mentor fought for democracy – Seun Kuti

    Afrobeat singer Seun Kuti has opened up on his relationship with President Bola Tinubu, stating that he had known him for many years.

    He revealed that President Tinubu was his political mentor while growing up.

    The son of late afrobeats legend, Fela Kuti disclosed this while speaking on his relationship with the President in a recent interview with a media personality, Chude Jideonwo.

    He recalled that Tinubu was a leading member of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) that fought for democracy after the military annulled the June 12, 1993 presidential election assumingly won by Chief MKO Abiola.

    Kuti said: “My relationship with President Tinubu on a personal level is very robust. I grew up knowing him as an uncle. He was a very good friend of uncle Beko (Kuti). He was a political mentor to me growing up as a child.

    “Many of the ideas that I understand today, it was these men that taught me as a child growing up. Knowing them fighting for democracy in this country with NADECO, even when Tinubu went on exile… Wole Soyinka, uncle Beko, Asiwaju, these were the men who fought for our democracy.

    “During Tinubu’s first term as Governor of Lagos State, I performed at all his rallies. I’ve always been close to him personally. But I don’t have any political relationship with him. And even at that, I don’t think it’s anybody’s business. I’ve not been to his house in years except when I need to see him for national issues.

    “So, these things that people say are just to tarnish your image. They make it seem like everybody must be paid for what they’re saying. No, no, no. What’s the truth is the truth. And I say it regardless of fear or favour of anybody”.

    Afro beats singer Seun Kuti has claimed he renovated his prison cell while in Police detention in Panti, Yaba.

    The Nation recalls big bird was detained in Panti earlier this year after he was captured slapping a police officer in a viral video.

    In a recent Instagram live session with fans, he claimed he sent money to renovate the cell, showers and tiles after regaining freedom.

    He added embattled singer Naira Marley recently remanded over the death of his former signee, MohBad, will benefit from his charity while in detention.

    Kuti said: “The day I got home from Panti cell, I sent money for the renovation of the cell, toilet, showers and tiles.

    “If you think I’m lying, go to Panti and verify. I renovated the cell I stayed in because I can go back there tomorrow.

    “At least Naira Marley can enjoy my charity there.”

    Popular Afrobeats singer Seun Kuti has accused Nigerians of neglecting him during his trials and tribulation period.

    He said Nigerians almost destroyed his career following his altercation with a police officer.

    Seun was arraigned before the Lagos State magistrate’s court and detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, in Panti, Yaba, for allegedly assaulting a police officer on Third Mainland Bridge in May 2023.

    The singer was captured in a viral video on the internet slapping a police officer after an argument got out of hand.

    Discussing the extent of the crisis he faced during this period, Seun Kuti in an Instagram live video, stated that he came dangerously close to losing his entire career as a result of the incident.

    “I’m tired of seeing my name everywhere attached to Sam Larry, Naira Marley, arrest or no arrest, police or no police. I’m really tired and I don’t want you guys to join me in your issues.

    “That was how una used una mouth nearly spoil my life, nearly destroying my career with una yeye keypad and computer. I missed five or six big shows this summer just because I defended my life and the life of my family. For that reason Nigerians wanted my life to be ended, for me to be destroyed and no body cared.

    “Nigeria Police suddenly became an innocent and peaceful force on earth. And Seun became the mad person that left his house looking for police to quarrel with. That was the picture you people painted about me then,” he said.

    Afrobeats singer Seun Kuti has stated the criticisms and backlash MohBad’s father is receiving for hastily burying him is because he is not financially strong.

    MohBad, who passed away on September 12 in an unclear manner, was buried the following day.

    Several fans of the musician criticised the singer’s father for burying him without making the appropriate preparations and conducting thorough investigations.

    In a recent interview with media personality Nedu’s The Honest Bunch podcast, Seun Kuti responded to the criticism surrounding MohBad’s funeral by saying that the deceased father is only being criticized because he is impoverished.

    “Poverty is playing a big role in this whole Mohbad issue. People are saying Mohbad’s father killed him because he buried him early. Who will be looking at his son’s dead body for two to three days?” He queried.

    Speaking in Pidgin, Kuti asked: “If na Otedola pikin die and he bury am overnight, wetin anybody go talk here? No be sey una go dey give am condolences visit for a house?

    “Instead of us to be consoling the man, we are making him evil that can kill his son. Somebody that just lost his child. You like the boy pass am na hin dem dey bully the boy all these days and you no talk anything.”

    Afrobeats musician, Seun Kuti, stated that a significant portion of those who criticize President Bola Tinubu would hold him in high regard if they had the opportunity to meet him.

    Seun explained that the dislike some people have for Tinubu is largely due to their limited access to him.

    The singer made the comment during his appearance as a guest on the latest episode of The Honest Bunch Podcast.

    The singer reminisced how, as a child, he wondered why, despite being a ‘cool guy,’ many people ‘hated’ his father, the late afrobeat pioneer, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.

    Seun said: “Being Fela’s son, growing up in Nigeria, I no even fit enter my girlfriend papa’s house. I go dey wonder say, ‘Wettin my papa sef dey do like dis wey nobody like am?’

    “But I know my father; he’s a cool guy. So, what’s it about this guy that nobody likes? If I go anywhere, people would be like, ‘Oh! He’s Fela’s son…’ I know that pain. But I looked at all politicians’ children; the same people who criticise Tinubu today will praise his children tomorrow because of money.

    “So, I understand that if you had access to Tinubu, you would love him. Your only hatred of him is your lack of access.”

    Superstar Afrobeats singer Seun Kuti has argued the Big Brother Naija reality show should have been designed as youths development in proffering solutions to national problems.

    Kuti stated this on Monday, during an interview with Gbenga Aborowa on Spade TV Africa.

    Sharing his thoughts, he said the popularity garnered for the show could have been channeled into a better course by improving the country’s downsides rather than pure entertainment.

    “BBNaija is the way it is because It was designed by certain people to be that way.

    “The people that designed it could have decided that it would be a show where young people discuss issues of the country and come up with solutions and viewers can vote on the best solution.

    Appearing on the latest episode of ‘The Honest Bunch’ Podcast, Kuti said many  of the criticisms directed at the President is from those who do not know him well enough.

    Seun said he is always bewildered whenever he sees the hatred some people have for his father, the late Afrobeats pioneer, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.

    He said most of the people who criticise politicians often turn around to praise the children of politicians because of money.

    Alleged assault: Court fixes Seun Kuti’s arraignment for September 27

    The arraignment of the afrobeat musician, Seun Kuti, who allegedly assaulted a police officer, has been fixed for September 27, before a Yaba Chief Magistrate’s Court in Lagos.

    Seun was to be arraigned on Monday, September 4 but the scheduled arraignment was stalled due to the ill-health of the presiding Chief Magistrate, Mrs. Adeola Olatunbosun.

    Following the absence of the Chief Magistrate, the court fixed September 27, for the musician’s arraignment.

    The afrobeat musician, Seun Kuti, was arrested by the officers of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCIID) after he allegedly assaulted an Inspector of Police, Mohammed Aminu attached to the Police Training College, Ikeja, while on official movement and in police uniform, on third mainland bridge, Lagos, on May 13, 2023.

    The police, through his lawyers who include: Morufu Animashaun, Samsideedn Adebeain, and Cyril O, approached the court on May 16, 2023, for his remand, pending the conclusion of the further investigation.

    At the end of the police investigation, the defendant was dragged before the court for arraignment, which was stalled following arguments of his counsel, who told the court that the police could not be the complainant and also the prosecutor at the same time on the matter.

    Consequently, the presiding Chief Magistrate conceded to the defence team’s submissions and ordered that the police to forward the case’s duplicate file to the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice.

    One of the police lawyers, Mr. Cyril, who was in court for the musician’s arraignment, said that the DPP had advised that the afrobeat musician be prosecuted for assault. However, neither Seun nor any of his lawyers was in court.

    Consequently, the court Registrars fixed September 27, for the musician’s arraignment.
